In this video we show you how we spray a Fender style 2 color sunburst on a P-bass we built for our buddy Bart from The Crash Pad Studio.
Sunburst finishes are easy with a few simple tools and each one is different so you can let your artistic vision be your guide.
Texas Toast Guitars is an independent guitar shop and this channel is a place for people with common interests to come together and discuss their mutual hobbies, toys, and opinions. All are welcome.

You follow those edges with evil robot precision
Ha... I need some evil robots
I GREATLY appreciate your vids! As a fledgling luthier, you have made the learning a whole lot easier!
Thanks for watching my friend, glad to hear yo are enjoying the videos
@@TexasToastGuitars I would really like to pick your brain one day..... but I'm sure that you are too busy building badass instruments.... and I'm in Atlanta, so it's not like I can swing by with a six pack and Chat 😂
Turned out nice! I like how you took your time to make the dark a nice even pattern. I've seen a bunch of videos where guys rush the job and don't get an even pattern. Looks so much better when you take your time and do it right!
Thanks for watching my friend. Sunbursts can be tricky that's for sure... I always seem to go a little wider than I really want to... Maybe it's my signature style :)
Hey, I had a 75 Dart
Texas Toast Guitars I think the burst looked great! The old cars are great too! The Darts are cool cars. My stepson is working on rebuilding a '68...gonna be awesome! That's my two passions...music and old cars! Love em both! Have a great day!!!☺
Thank you, thank you for explaining the paint product's you used. There are so many video's on youtube of people just spraying a guitar's, no commentary no nothing, it is so frustrating. This is great.
Glad it was helpful!
Looks Great Bro.... Keep Makin them.
Man that is sweet! I love the vintage 2 tone tobacco burst! It's awesome!☺
Thanks amigo, that bass turned out pretty sweet
Texas Toast Guitars I bet it did!👍😎
Thank you very much for this !
Slightly easier than thought to build up a sunburst finish. Cool. Might have to have a go.
Give it a shot Paul
Great job! Tnx 4 the video👌
Thanks for watching Marko
Thanks for making good videos next to build beautiful guitars!
That Deltron is some nice stuff. Had some of the cheaper stuff mixed up for my bumper and they didn't have the correct color. Found that out after painting the bumper.
So I went back and they tried a few other paint chips but couldn't match it with the cheaper stuff. So they ended up giving me Deltron for free to make up for the other stuff not being the right color. I was pretty surprised because there was a decent price difference.
Right on, the Deltron is great paint for sure
Lovely
Can you add a link to both spray guns you used? Also the brand of the sealer and top coat brands. Thanks
Nice work
Thanks for sharing this video with us.
Can you tell us more about the touch-up gun you're using:
- is it an HVLP gun?
- what needle/nozzle combination are you running?
- what wall pressure and gun pressure are you using?
Finally, just wondering why you're calling this a 2-color sunburst, as there's only one color being laid over the base coat.
Again, thanks for sharing your skills with us.
Hi Marty, all our guns and HVLP these days. I think the psi to the gun is 40 lbs but, remember, these are conversion guns so it will vary from spray gun to spray gun and you really should find the combination that works for y'all. If you perfectly replicate all of our set up here in Colorado and take it to a different place it might not work. We are always adjusting things too and so should you based on the conditions, paints etc.
The base color is one color and the burst is another. Oddly enough as you burst the two there are lots of other colors that appear.
Thanks for watching brotherman
thanks good looking job.
Thanks for watching my friend
Good lookin' burst, Matt!
Thanks homes
This is getting an anodized aluminum pick-guard, should look pretty slick.
Agreed!
Yeah, not too shabby. Looks better than many big named bursts. Goes to show you what having quality control adds to a guitar.
that was awesome
Thanks my friend
Real nice Matt
Thanks man, there was some RUclips thing that prompted me to do something with this video. I still don't really know how all the settings and analytics work
Killer burst
Thanks for watching cfmachado
That clear coat came out nice
Thanks for watching Luis
hello, what are those colors called? where do I buy them? they are special? I want to paint my 1966 fender guitar in sunburst, but I have struggled because the painting seems to brisar. thank you!
Good tune to paint by! Helps the rhythm when spraying. Looks great!
We are really lucky to have some great friends who also make great music
looks great. I wanted to do a solid color sunburst on a guitar im making. im thinking to:
1. apply grain filler
2. apply primer
3. apply bright orange paint
4. "sunburst" with black
does that make sense?
Sounds right to me PiZZ4 PiZZ4.
We use a few different products here so we would use the Simtec sealer in place of grain filler and primer... that's just us.
Let me know how it turns out.
Really beautiful artwork. How do you achieve that gradient effect, do you close regulator of the flow of paint?
We are always adjusting the paint guns during the process
Im building a "billy Bo" too out of a very old Mahogany mantle pc..the neck is a Danelectro (tele scale) style with the head stock modified to the Gretsch shape.
That sounds pretty neat
@@TexasToastGuitars i posted some pics on your facebook page
I know this is a late comment, but I'm thinking about getting a kit for a Gibson ES style guitar and I was just looking for ways to paint it. Trying to just get inspired you know, anyway what I wanted to say is that looks sick good job.
Thanks for watching my friend, glad you dig the videos. Let us know how your finish turns out. We love sunbursts
Thx @@TexasToastGuitars I will.
What do you apply to the guitar before you start staining
can you show a tutorial on using rattle cans to do a sunburst... that would be really good as most folks don't have a proper spray booth, compressor and gun. Great video by the way :-)
Buy a preval. It’s like $3, maybe $4.
Beautiful work. Your video is the closest to what I am looking for. I want to simulate a 70's era antigua strat paint job.
Thanks,
Dr. G
Thanks for watching Dr. G
I have to admit an affinity for the Antigua burst. We might have to do one some day.
Great video, I’ve been using spray cans of lacquer but need to get a better set up.
Can you tell me is the a compressor your using or airbrush? Thanks
Hi Mike, the only advice I can give you is to get the biggest compressor you possibly can for any kind of paint work
Rocking version of 'Ain't No Grave'
Check out my home boys in Tokyo Rodeo for more cool tunes facebook.com/tokyorodeoband/
What size nozzles do you use on your spray guns? Mainly the nozzle used for the dark/black border! My spray gun tends to leave large droplets on the tapering off part, yours are nice and smooth.
Edit: I just discovered a similar question asked and Texas Toast replied that it’s a 1.4 nozzle at 40lbs on HVLP.
There are lots of sizes that come with lots of guns. You will need to do some testing on the various materials you will be spraying
Great job! looks killer! can you tell me the sanding grids you used and if you let the sunburst dry and how much after you put the clear coats? Thanks!!!!
A god rule of thumb is to sand your sealer coats to at least 220. NEVER EVER sand your color coats and spray your clear as directed. If you are using lacquer you can wait as long as you want but if you are using modern paints I think you can wait up to 24 hours in-between color and clear
@@TexasToastGuitars Thank you! Nice paint job again!
What clear coat do you use?
I like the guitar holder you have. Did you make it or buy it? What holds the pipe in place while still being able to rotate it?
Never mind.. haha found the video of u talking about it. Cool stuff!
Cool man, yeah we made that one. We copied the idea from Doug Kauer and reverse engineered from pictures we found. I don't know how much like his ours wound up being but it works really well
Is the tobacco brown mixed with a pigment or is it simply used as a toner like the vintage amber?? thanks! :)
Yeah use the tobacco brown the same way you use the amber
I was wondering how many ounce of each paint do you usually mix to spray a bass
That is the tricky bit. Ideally you will mix up just enough to finish and have no waste. You will get good at figuring it out the more you do it.
What are you using as a hanger/holder that fits in the humbucker rout?
That is a custom made hanger made from a 45 degree EMT bend and some aluminium
Hey there! I'm not sure i understand, basically you spray the color mixed with some type of solvent right ? So that means that you don't mix the color in a varnish when spraying , it's just like when you do it hand rubbbed except you spray it and let it dry then you are able to put varnish on top ?
after some research , i found out that the dbc500 is actually some type of clear coat only to be used as an intercoat before the top coat :D !
That's right. now you can do a burst with color and solvent and then spray clear over that as well we did a video about that process as well
Great video , thank you ! Will a nitro spray sanding sealer would be enough to fill grain over an ash body before a sunburst ?
Thanks for watching Lou.
Yes it will, however it will take more and will shrink back at a different rate.
It is much easier to use the Simtec on an ash body.
Good luck brotherman
@@TexasToastGuitars Thank you so much for guiding me , appreciation from Quebec !
Did you apply a sealer coating before the amber lacquer coating?
Yes
I would like to see you do that with a rattle can. Would be interesting.
Ugh, totally different techniques maybe I'll do a video on it one day?
Looks good but how long did you wait to put the Clear on?
HI Larry, I don't know how long we waited on this one, but I know it was the same day... probably however long it took us to ready the clear gun and spray. According to the directions on the paint you have up to 24 hours to apply clear.
Thanks for watching amigo
Do you need a clear primer after you put on a sealer or is the primer unnecessary?
Simtec, color coats, clear coat
is a sealer coat just like wood conditioner? does anybody know?
No Simtec is not a conditioner, it is a coating
Hi There. I believe you guys use 2K Poly Finishes. The DBC 500 is the only thing that will dilute the dye and be compatible with the Polyurethane finish? Thanks! Gabriel.
Yeah man, anytime you would have used lacquer in the past... you can use DBC or any color blender or intercoat clear in it's place
@@TexasToastGuitars Impossible to find a color blender in my country. I tried after this video so I'll have to stay with lacquer for a while now. Thanks! very informative videos.
Hey man! Looks great! Can you do a “rig rundown” on your spray setup? Thx in advance!
Zach
Good video idea Zach, we will get on that
Texas Toast Guitars awesome!!!
I just started building this year!! Thank you for your videos, they are helpful!
I know it's the same technique, but if you do a cherry lemon burst on a challenger, make a vid of that!
I do love that finish, next time we do one I'll make sure to have the camera rolling my friend
Hey guys have you done a vid on the finishing products you use your hvlp ,sanding and buffing that product? Could be interesting.
I'm pretty sure we have done some... I wouldn't be opposed to doing more. I'm pretty sure there are old vids that some people just joining us have not seen yet.
man i wish i had a workshop
You can rent shop space from us
Well maybe some similar deal exists in Belgium :D
You weren't kidding about that gun you use for clear. It looks like it's spraying glass!
Thanks for watching Lloyd, that clear gun is a game changer.
Texas Toast Guitars Yea definitely laying down beautifully.
I know it's not a "proper" authentic-looking color but I really liked the overall look with only the slightest bit of brown sprayed on the edge. Like at 2:52
Thanks for watching amigo. I like it too
Define "proper", isn't it art and can be however you like it?
@@ethanbattermann7123 Certainly it can be whatever you like, but it's not a style of paint job that Fender ever offered. So, while you or I might like the look of it, we could not call it "authentic" in the sense of mimicing a vintage style. Indeed, we would know instantly that it WASN'T a vintage style. Likewise, in Google images if you look up "fender sienna burst" you'll see a cherry sunburst color style that sometimes looks nice and sometimes does not; but Fender never offered it until at least the 80's. That's all I'm saying about it, no judgement implied.
Looked very much like a ‘proper’ 1954 - 1958 Fender 2 tone sunburst to me.
Hi, whats the jet needle size of that first gun you are using?
I think that is a 1.4
Awesome, just the information I’m after. Thanks Texas Toast Guitars and Lay Chester for the question we all want to ask and need answered. Awesome!
do you guys thin down the DBC 500 at all? or is it good to just mix with trans tint to the desired color and spray
I think the midcoat or DBC is good to go but it has been a while since we used that after switching to the TAMCO paints. Just follow the directions on the lable and you should be cool
@@TexasToastGuitars Thank You! I might just look into TAMCO paints instead. DBC500 is looking like a pain in the ass to find
Do you have any specific tips for doing a sunburst finish?
Yes... spray towards the body from the edge not away from the body toward the edge. That way you won't get those hard lines
@@TexasToastGuitars ok thanks, great video by the way
What clear did you use
Hi Joe, thanks for watching. We use the PPG Production Clear
Could you do a 2 color burst with rattle cans?
Hi Bad Gamer47, I'm sure it could be done and even done pretty well. The tricky bit is going to be using a paint delivery system that isn't really adjustable. Sure they make different caps/tips or spray nozzles for the cans but it isn't as easy as simply adjusting the gun.
Good luck on your project, let me know how it turns out. My one word of advice is to aim the paint at the body rather than away from it (it's going to take a little practice) that way you won't get that hard line which isn't really a burst but a ring of darker paint.
Texas Toast Guitars thanks, I'm planing on doing a silverburst on a squire ( re-building the whole thing) will be sure to let you know how it turns out
Wow. Seriously
Thanks for watching Hosoi
hello working pro currently l work on a FENDER tone TOBACCO BROWN 4 Layerspray l have a problemcause humidity 20 degree currently we have a drop in heat it was necessary l heat the for workshop to guide me l use a cover l remove with cover airbrush christophe france
Humidity is a real bear sometimes
@@TexasToastGuitars merci
As you spray the tobacco brown I see that you make several passes. How long between coats do you wait. The video makes it look like it is all done at the same time. Or do you wait for it to flash dry in between coats?…
You are right David let things flash off a bit I don't know exactly how long each time but 5 or 10 minutes I guess
What clear did you use?
I don't remember but these days we use Tamco Euro Clear
Hey can I shoot poly instead of clear coat if I use the same dye you used?
I don't see why not Kevin. I'm not sure what you mean when you say "poly" , like what brand you are using?
The clear coat we use is a urethane, I'm assuming poly is short for polyurethane. You should always test the coatings that you use... no mater what they are.
Let me know how it goes
Oh I thought you were using automotive clear coat
We are...
We use PPG Omni Production Clear
I ran into a problem, I am making the drawings for a Fender Showmaster that I had. Fender sent me an email with the specs, color etc, it’s says that’s a 25.5 scale. I have two HSH bodies, one resembles a Jackson soloist and the other is a strat body. I am using both bodies for reference purpose, now here is the thing, when I measure from the nut to the bridge it measures 26.5 on both guitars!. Now when I tried to move up the pick up cavities to make it 25.5, There is no room to fit all 3 of them in a 6” space to keep the 25.5 scale length... are the bodies wrong or is it me?
Hi Kevin,
The Fender Showmaster had a 24 fret neck... I wonder if the bodies you are using are the problem?
Could it be that the standard neck pocket for a 21 fret neck (or 22 fret neck with that little fretboard overhang) e the problem? I don't think you should have any problem fitting in 2 humbuckers into a 25.5" scale guitar with 24 frets.
Maybe start with the scale on a big sheet of paper, layout the frets and then draw the body using one of the frets as an index. Looks like the lower horn joins the neck at the 21st fret.
Good luck man
Water base color or what??
We do not use water base anything... but one certainly could.
We have done lots of videos about finishing, most of them are called something like "Why Are You Using Lacquer... It Sucks!"
In this video we used DBC-500 from PPG and Trans-Tint dyes
Dear Matt, if I could call you so close! I have two questions about your excellent work: the second color you have used, you apply over and over and over the first one, as I could see, without delays, how could you seams the thickness of the second apply due to avoid dripping? and, what all about the regulation of you spraying gun? pressure, noozle diameter, coating viscosity, and so one? Many thanks for sharing......
Hi Jorge, you will need to do some testing and see what works for you. I will say that the second coat should be really dark so you don't have to spray so much.
Thanks, I'll try 😩
It is a nitrolacquer?
We no longer spray nitrocellulose or acrylic lacquer
@@TexasToastGuitars Polyurethane?
Great, but can you show the result next time?
Sorry you are disappointed by the videos
