Thanks for this video... answered quite a few questions for me! You guys know HOW to get incredible results... and the knowledge sharing is soooo helpful
Great video, Matt. Chis is definitely the maestro of masking. I use your older instructional videos for tips and tricks. The multipart series on fabric tops is like a master class.
Hey There Matt and Chris...Sweet looking guitar and fantastic video. Always love seeing what goes into making a guitar. Great content! Thanks....jimmy.
Looking great, can't wait for the next installment!! I share about all TTG vids on Facebook, Twitter, Gab, Minds & Parler to spread the good TTG news!! Keep it up guys!!
Looks fantastic, guys. Phillip is going to be over the moon! Can't wait to see what hardware you outfit it with! I hope its DAFs! Johnny Switchblade would say "ayeee! Dat's somtin' nice!"
Good call on remasking after each coat. I just came back from a neck I initially started a couple of years ago and getting tape off from that long ago was a bit of a bugger! BTW I liked the background music.
I felt a little bad when I bought the platinum Challenger because you said it was originally going to Phil. Now looking at this guitar it looks like we both came out winners. Beautiful guitar.
Holy crap, that burst look stunning! And the Challenger is a great model too. It makes me really want to come to a Set Neck Class, but since I’m living in Norway, the trip would cost more than the course.
Great vid. Thanks! Sorry if you mentioned it and I missed it but is the wide tape used on the fretboard and body sides just 3M painters tape or something else?
The big stuff is just standard painters tape. They also sell some thats less tacky than the blue but it works fine for large areas like fretboard. That fine line tape is the shizzzzz, though. It made jobs sooooo much easier in the automotive refinishing industry. Especially when you've got extremely detailed stuff to mask off.
Great video haven't heard Chris talk that much... he certainly has much more patience than I do to mask that off. I would be ok with the little blip on the neck if it was smooth and could still get a nice satin finish.
Have you guys ever tried the dyed shellac? Now I'm intrigued. Awesome vid and perfect timing. I'm trying to step up my finishing technique for this guitar building contest in Colorado next year.
Your local automotive paint supply house sells it. You local Sherwin-Williams or whatever you've got locally should keep it in stock so you can go in and get a roll today. Just ask for 3M fine line tape. Looking on Google, it says Advance Auto Parts carries 3M Fine Line tape so if you're in the US and have a parts store close, you can check there, too. Obviously it'll be with the refinishing supplies.
Great video, Thank You Maybe less background music when explaining (10:44). The music is great and all however I'm here to learn. Also, my hearing isn't what it used to be, I purchased a Twin Reverb back in 1976 and my hearing has been the same since!
I'm right in the middle of the video the paint section my question is how can you mask off for staining a flat surface so there's no bleeding from one stain color to the next on a custom stain and crazy shouldn't be doing tots pain but curious anyway
So I've been putting together and reshaping some kit guitars...yes cheap china hardware and bass wood to work with...lol I found a company that offers nicer wood types, but cheap hardware again...still under $300.00 there's alot of different finishes that can be applied as you already know. ..lol I'll figure out the stain question.!!! ..the idea was a guitar with tha classiness of a Stratovarius🎻😇 but born to raise hell likea shredder😈🎸.....so many variations for tha perfect guitar body .....💙💚💙🎸 Where can i check out kit guitars offered from Texas Toast with prices...i would like to see what you've got. ...?!
Sweet info, you guys ever hand stain your guitars? Recently refinish a les Paul with hand stain and poly clear, sorry to piss of the Gibson guys but it was super fun and controllable.
I watched a video the Brad Angove did where he scraped all of his binding. And I thought wouldn't that have been easier to mask it off instead of scrape? 😁😅🤣 oh well. Sorry Brad.
Hi Texas Toast Guitars, thanks for all of the excellent guitar building tips and info that I've been able to enjoy over the years. I recently completed a guitar build (more or a rebuild), and wish I'd taken this approach to dealing with the binding, instead of scraping. In my case scraping proved to be a major headache (as documented in the build in my youtube vid: ruclips.net/video/HQa436SQYuk/видео.html ), and I'll definitely be trying it your way in my next build - probably an Explorer with binding all round. Not sure if I'm ready to try wood binding yet though. My dream is to one day make my way over to the US and do a full build in one of your classes/workshops. Thanks.
Yea, some guys do like those "beauty marks" and will leave them for identification purposes while the next guy would think it's a flaw that they just can't look past on their $1200 guitar and it's now ruined. I don't get the latter, personally. I do have a sort of beauty mark on my Goldtop. It's got a tiny, rounded depression in the paint, right next to the 20th fret. It doesn't bother me and the guitar is exceptional otherwise so I just figured it'd make it easier to identify if it was ever stolen. 👍 I won't ever get rid of it, anyway, so it really doesn't matter if it's there or not.
Quite a pleasant job
I would have happily watched longer.....
More coming soon
WOW… thats a fantastic looking top !!! Phillip is going to be blown away...
I think so too
Thanks for this video... answered quite a few questions for me! You guys know HOW to get incredible results... and the knowledge sharing is soooo helpful
This is cool.
the coolest
Great video, Matt. Chis is definitely the maestro of masking. I use your older instructional videos for tips and tricks. The multipart series on fabric tops is like a master class.
Oh yeah man, Chris is the man
I’ll watch this tomorrow while on an 8 hour bus trip, then make a clever remark that no one gets (myself included).. can’t wait!
Looking forward to it
Super slick paint. Very nice. Also, Great Q and A between you two.
Glad you enjoyed it brougham
Great video series!!! Thanks Matt and Chris.
Our pleasure Rod

Oh, a cliffhanger... how exciting!!! It looks gorgeous!
HAHAHA cliffhanger
Looking great, can't wait for the next installment!! I share about all TTG vids on Facebook, Twitter, Gab, Minds & Parler to spread the good TTG news!! Keep it up guys!!
Thanks Karl
Love these type of videos !! Thank so much guys !! That burst is looking amazing !!
Glad you enjoy them Mike
Looks Gorgeous
Thanks man
Well, this was just like watching a guitar being masked!
(Phillip Mcknight is lucky to have friends like you, I know I am)
Thanks brotherman
Looks fantastic, guys. Phillip is going to be over the moon! Can't wait to see what hardware you outfit it with! I hope its DAFs! Johnny Switchblade would say "ayeee! Dat's somtin' nice!"
Ayeee you could have sumthin nice baby
I knew it. You snap your finger.... LOL Prep like that takes time so you end up with a quality final product.
That's the way it works brotherman
Good call on remasking after each coat. I just came back from a neck I initially started a couple of years ago and getting tape off from that long ago was a bit of a bugger!
BTW I liked the background music.
Thanks Peter
Fine line tape! Nice! I recommended that on your faux binding vid. Nice to see yall using it! 🙏👍
If only we would have watched the Discovery Channel 20 years ago we would have seen it then and learned about it... oh wait
So cool guitar guys!
Thanks my friend
Oh this is exciting. Cool shape for the guitar. For water and rubbing alchohol what is the percentage rate?
That's their own design, called the Challenger. I'd love to have one. They're phenomenal instruments!
I felt a little bad when I bought the platinum Challenger because you said it was originally going to Phil. Now looking at this guitar it looks like we both came out winners. Beautiful guitar.
Nah, it was supposed to work that way
Nice fretboard! Reminds me of all the Blues cats from back in the day that had their names on their guitars just like that.
You have a custom guitar, you need your name on there
Holy crap, that burst look stunning!
And the Challenger is a great model too. It makes me really want to come to a Set Neck Class, but since I’m living in Norway, the trip would cost more than the course.
I hear ya
the 3M fineline is vinyl. used it for years for custom paint on cars and other vehicles.
and it's good too
I wouldn't paint that neck just because of that spot. I love those little imperfections. I bet Phil will love that guitar.
I think so too
Great vid. Thanks! Sorry if you mentioned it and I missed it but is the wide tape used on the fretboard and body sides just 3M painters tape or something else?

Just regular tape
Not only does Chris paint he's a tape master!
And then some
Great video haven't heard Chris talk that much... he certainly has much more patience than I do to mask that off. I would be ok with the little blip on the neck if it was smooth and could still get a nice satin finish.
I think we are going to go with a satin finish on the neck
I love it 👍🤘
Thanks Gil
Have you guys ever tried the dyed shellac? Now I'm intrigued. Awesome vid and perfect timing. I'm trying to step up my finishing technique for this guitar building contest in Colorado next year.
Nah, we switched paints and are only using the modern stuff these days
Quick question, you sprayed sealer over the binding or did it go on after sealer?
The guitar is all sealed up before we started
@@TexasToastGuitars I should have been more clear sorry.i was wondering I'd you bound pre or post sealer
Looking good. What color are you going to paint the frets?
Not sure yet
Where do you get that 1/4" masking tape?
Your local automotive paint supply house sells it. You local Sherwin-Williams or whatever you've got locally should keep it in stock so you can go in and get a roll today. Just ask for 3M fine line tape.

The best is FBS tapes, if you can get it it is the best.

Noted, I think we have had this exact same conversation before
hey Matt, one advice, dont do recordings with live sound on "empty" rooms ;) it makes a lot of echo.
Nice tips ;) love your vids
Thanks for the tip!

I guess I don't understand... we don't stain guitars?
@@TexasToastGuitars but the knowledge between you and Chris...i thought maybe you could explain tha stain...lol

No, we do not stain woods, I know people do it but we choose not to
Do you seal over the binding or tape it off?
We seal over the binding and then tape it off
Where can I go to get my own simtec sealer?
simteccoatings.com/
Tell em' you want the stuff Texas Toast uses, they will know what you want
Best way -- let you do it lol
That is good too
so.... instead of a painting video we get a taping video? :)
Relax, I'm editing the painting one now :)
@@TexasToastGuitars not a problem just had to give you some grief :)
I watched a video the Brad Angove did where he scraped all of his binding. And I thought wouldn't that have been easier to mask it off instead of scrape? 😁😅🤣 oh well. Sorry Brad.
One day Brad will come down here and learn how to do it
90% preparation, 9% perspiration, 1% actual spraying.
You know that's right
🤘😀🤘
Keep on rocking me baby!

Most 1200 dollar guitars are pretty booger free these days, you have to pay double or triple to get back to having flaws
