- This video is about how I built my dream guitar. I'm painting a 3 tone sunburst with spray cans. It's not without problems and some fails but the result ends up being pretty amazing - in my humble opinion.
I'm a guitar building beginner and this video is the 7th in a 9 part series on how to build your dream guitar with from scratch with no guitar building experience.

Pro tip: If you're gonna use spray cans or even an air gun to do a sunburst type paint job, DO NOT use a stencil/screen when introducing new colors. Instead start from the inside and paint outward with the new colors/coats, holding the spray nozzle at about a 45 degree angle going outwards across the edge.
Using a stencil creates a very obvious and distinct line between the colors and looks really unnatural unless you really know what you're doing. Freehanding will blend much much better. You also want to spray the guitar on a flat plane. Solid colors will be ok if you want to hang it, but be careful not to overspray. A flat plane greatly decreases the chances of globbing up.

It still turned out nice even with the little mishaps. One thing you can do next time is after the amber layer.. spray some more coats of clear on top of it to Lock in the amber. I would then do the black layers next. And if you should get any problems with the black you have to sand out.. you can safely sand it out and the clear you put on the amber will protect it from any of the black layer issues. After you lay down your black fade, clear that over as well to lock it in. And then do the red fade last. I find doing clear between each transition can help if there's any issues. Also has someone else has stated yes using the templates can leave hard edges or weird patterns to the layers. It's best to try and do it more freehand with the spray cans. I do my sunbursts with an airbrush and I tried recently using templates and it still leaves a edge compared to freehanding. Still though for the concept you had with it originally.. I think it turned out perfectly for it! Awesome work!

As far as my experiences are:
use pit filler. Dont use epoxy, its not worth the amount of sanding afterwards. Simple wood filler will do the thing.
Secondly, use an transparent spray as a first layer to create contact between the wood and the spray material. Furthermore, to avoid a sloppy surface, start with the edges first and then cover the rest of the body

@Michael Lagerstedt. Hi Michael, before I get into my comment, thanks for posting this video because it is an extremely helpful one. Especially when determining if I should attempt doing a re-finish, or contact the local Luthier & pay him to do it. With all that said, let me continue...
I have 3 1970's Stratocaster bodies. 1- 1977 in Black, *1- 1979 that is in Natural & *1- 1972-75 which is also Natural.
I'll start with my 72-75, or just 1975. Going by the Neck-Well, it has traces of white (primer), then Black, then there's slight traces of a Fender Red that goes over the Black. That's an easy call, it'll be re-finished in Black, simply because that was the factory finish & I'll leave the Neck-Well alone so if it's ever sold, the buyer would know I brought it back to it's factory color finish. The 2nd Strat in my 1979. At first I assumed that it was a Factory-Natural finish but then I noticed inside the control cavity, there is a trace of what would make it a Tobacco Sunburst. Now I can get the correct colors from a couple online sources, so that's not a problem. I wondered if it was 2-tome, or 3-tone.. Probably 3-tone which I like anyway...
My big concern is the ''Clear-Coat Finish''.
I've refinished Necks before so I know that I have to apply so many coats, then lightly sand them smooth but I've watched guys put 2-coats on that seemed to be enough. What is the best way to do the clear-coats? I'll be using Lacquer base finish, so the clear-coat would be of the same. Since we're talking about a guitar that is just over 40 years old, I'm wondering if it would look better in a gloss, or if satin is the best way to go. The Black Strat (72-75) would probably be a satin finish since the 1977 Strat which is Black, doesn't stand out with a shiny gloss, it's more of a satin finish. I'm sorta stumped because if I screw up the clear-coating, it'll require a ton of work to do it over again.... Thanks, Monty............

Hi Monty, thank’s so much for your comment. As you probably understand l’m a total amateur so You can’t really go by my advice.
My experience with the clear coat is very limited. I just used 2 or 3 layers and I just let it dry for an hour or so between the layers. I also went over it with 1200 grid sandpaper between the coats.
But how a fresh coat of nitro will react with an old finish I don’t know. Maybe ask Chris at Highline guitars or maybe Brad Angove.
Sorry I can’t give you a more definitive answer.

@@MichaelLagerstedt Thanks for that. Yep I am waiting on Highline. I might just get the spray grain filler, pick my finishes and go for everything myself... I refinished a 2002 Strat that a guy sanded off the red so I went with Fender 59 Tan. I only made one mistake, I accidentally put 3 coats of tinted lacquer clear coat on it & it ended up more like a hot mustard color, lol but it looks okay to me...

No I didn’t really use sanding sealer that much... as I understand it sanding sealer is put on top of the nitro paint. It’s better to sand on sanding sealer than to sand directly on the nitro. nevertheless I actually sanded the nitro on my second guitar. But please remember I’m just an amateur. Maybe check out Higline guitars or Brad Angroves channel for research on sanding sealer.👍🏼
You also could have gone for a staining and a clear coat on top, i think the transistion is a simpler job with waterbased stains

Before painting, you can paint the body with a primer and nitrocellulose capon varnish ?
That’s true, but I wanted that thin coat of Nitro because that’s what Novo guitars does, so I just tried to do what I thought they did.

@@MichaelLagerstedt tror jeg har set denne video 100 gange, da jeg gerne vil male min guitar i sunburst. Men er lidt nervøs for om jeg kan få et godt resultat som total begynder. Men dette var også din første gang med hensyn til at male en guitar?
Jep ... det var første gang... og sunburst er ikke den letteste at begynde med men det gik ok for mig. Husk at varme sprayfåserne i varmt vand og når du bevæger den hen over guitar kroppen så pas på du ikke slipper dyssen før du helt væk fra guitar kroppen.
Det er der gjorde det lettere for mig var at jeg ikke gik efter en spejlblank overflade for det kræver meget mere arbejde.

Have looked at Colour (channel) 3 tone burst ? It's Fender custom shop showing their method. Red goes on last allieviating the black line problem. Maybe not possible with rattle cans. Nice job btw

As soon as the weather warms up I'm going to do a 3 color tobacco burst. First time painting a guitar so I'm kind of nervous. I don't have a paint booth, just a garage and it's too big to try to warm up with a space heater. Does the temp have to be above 70 degrees Fahrenheit to paint with nitrocellulose lacquer?
The thing that’s really important is the humidity in the air not so much the temperature as far as I know. Really warm weather can even be a problem if it’s not a dry heat... 😅
@@MichaelLagerstedt Good to know. So I will need to do it in the Spring because Tennessee summers can get pretty humid. Oh, and this year will be the 17 year, or whichever cycle, cicada breakout here. We've been through one and for 5 weeks we'd go outside and the air and trees were full of them and it was terribly loud. I'll end up having some get in my garage and get stuck to the paint job. Literally millions if not billions of cicadas hatch. I wonder if I can hit a big bunch of them with my shotgun?
