      Women didn't really have a say in what their potential husbands looked like for many many many years, so there was no real "male beauty standard". A woman simply married whoever could take care of her, even if he was old and/or unattractive to her. This was a worldwide phenomenon, from the east to the west, women had no say- they just got married off to whomever her family chose.
      It was like this until women were finally free to choose to marry- which is post 1800s.
      "Male fashion through history" could be interesting, but there was no real beauty standard.
      I'd say the western beauty standard in modern times for men nowadays is either "buff, tall, tan, and wealthy" or "buff, tall, pale and wealthy"- and for some, they like the scruffy bear dad bod type. Lol.

      , ideal body type doesn’t mean sexual or what the other sex liked throughout history necessarily, but how the men’s body type evolved for men and how the ideals changed like hairstyle or looks body type, it doesn’t always mean what the opposing sex thinks in the matter because they aren’t the only reason why the social constructs change

      @@adenm8963 Yes! Also, women with extra body fat, especially around their hips and thighs, are more likely to be fertile. Ever wonder why women have a naturally higher body fat than men? Or why female athletes, who have a low body fat percentage, tend to loose their periods? Well, fat is essential for the production and regulation of estrogen. In a time period when a lot of people lived in famine, men evolved to view larger women as more beautiful, as these women were more likely to be hormonally healthy and thus able to bear children. Moreover, without excess calories, women tend to loose a lot of weight when breastfeeding, so they needed extra fat to burn in order to feed their infants.
      TLR: excess body fat, in times of history plagued by famine, was seen as an evolutionary advantage.

    • @phoebejanemiller1671
      @phoebejanemiller1671 3 года назад +20

      @@adenm8963 I’d also say that most women who were thought of as attractive were probably just what we’d call curvy- not overweight or obese. Think of Marilyn Monroe. She wasn’t overweight at all, but she still had curves that made her look healthy and sexy. A lot of what people think is sexually attractive has to do with what is healthy. Things like healthy hair, clear skin, and a healthy (not over or underweight) body. While beauty standards change, human beings will always be drawn to people who look healthy. But beauty is only skin deep- so honestly- and I’m not just saying this- I’m more attracted to people’s personalities. I’d be happy to date a guy who is short and overweight if he’s nice and treats me right. However, when it comes to how I make myself (as a woman) feel attractive, I just try to focus on what makes me look healthy. Skincare, healthy diet, light exercise, and so on. A lot of people get low self esteem from trying to look that the latest Instagram model. But it’s much easier to just focus on taking care of the body and face that I do have and making the most of them. People who are internally healthy have a glow to them that can’t be attained through heavy makeup and plastic surgery. I love this quote from the golden age of Hollywood: “to be beautiful and natural is the birthright of every woman.” In other words, all women have a natural beauty to them. All we need to do is care for it by keeping healthy and happy.

      That's false, the model tries to look like Botticelli's Venus, but she's clearly fatter. This is a misrepresentation of reality in order to comfort curvy women. It's not accurate. The same goes for 1930-1950.

  • @tessalow8539

    I don't like how women feel so pressurized into getting the perfect body that they resort to plastic surgery. Seriously. How do you expect us to have Nicki minaj boobs and Kim kardashian hips and butt, but expect us to have a thigh gap as well? I think it's completely fine if a particular body type is desired or on trend, but not so much so where women get stared at in public if they're legs aren't stick thin or if they don't have a cleavage. And definitely not so much so that some get silicone injected into their butts and breasts. Everyone is beautiful. Some people have high metabolism, small bones etc, some people don't. Why can't we just accept that?

    • @hukubis
      @hukubis 9 лет назад +62

      You think men nowadays have it any differnt?
      Both men and women have an intelligent choice of, with what to atract the opposit sex.
      Be it fit body, sex skills, wealth, intelligence, or high social skills, at least some are must have to atract mates. That's just basic logic.
      Now, the fact that usually women preffer to aquire first, second, or the last, forcing men to compinsate with harder choices is actually more unfair towards us, if we trully talking true gender equality, and not femmenazism.
      There is no country where men live longer than women, while biological potential of both sexes are equal, just sayng.

    • @SirThopas3
      @SirThopas3 9 лет назад +19

      hukubis I am incredibly confused by what you are trying to say. Are you claiming that men die earlier than women because men feel the need to overcompensate in order to attract women? I'm not sure that is scientifically sound. Women do live longer than men on average, but the number 1 cause of death for men is cardiovascular diseases and there is evidence that part of the reason why is because men go to the doctor less often than women. I would say that it is a society that encourages men to be "tough" and "muscle through the pain" attributes to early male death than women who like to date good-looking or wealthy men. Also, I find it odd that you felt the need to contribute this to tessa low's comment. Her comment was a very general "embrace your body" type of comment. She literally says "everyone is beautiful", which would include men. Your comment does not pertain to the conversation at hand and I feel that you only read up to "I don't like how women feel so pressurized", assumed this person was a "femmenazism", and typed up a rebuttal for an argument that does not exist.

      SirThopas3 Hi, I would not say that the health aspect has to do with the pressure on masculinity or toughness as much as the fact that men are often irresponsible with their health when they are young (and then it haunts them when they hit the 40s or so). Us women.... we have to know a lot about health.... even though our pain tolerance is higher than that of men, we usually do not ignore it when we are in a strange kind of pain (we learn to differentiate between dangerous pain or just normal level pain that we experience often).
      You would not believe how many arguments I have with my boyfriend over the fact that he should wear a scarf when it is freezing outside.... or that he should buy winter shoes when we live in a country where it snows a lot (and yes, he can afford it, so that is not the issue here).... having an immunity disorder myself, I understand perfectly how fragile your health is.... and how much precaution it takes to stay healthy.... him being more or less healthy makes it very difficult to understand how these decisions can come to haunt him later on when he won't be able to rely on the fact that young organisms heal fast. It also has to do with obesity - as men often eat very unhealthy diets when single.... I hope all men will grow to understand more about their own health.

      Yeah, I don't see anything offensive. It is just surprising that beauty has changed so much over the hundreds of years of civilizations. It proves that these modern day images of beauty and that you have to be thin to be "pretty" isn't always how it was, or how it will be. It proves that all of this propaganda that being skinny=beauty, and curvy=fat, is just stupid, and won't last forever, and soon another body trend will come along.
      Overall, I just think that this video opens your eyes to how the "ideal" body type has changed, and that they are all beautiful.

    • @loverrlee
      @loverrlee 9 лет назад +310

      I think you mean big boobs AND flat *stomach*? But yeah I know what you mean! It is so sad because I used to look pretty close to this but I didn't have THAT big of boobs, and I also only had half-thigh gap. So I DID just GIVE UP and now I'm worse because I couldn't just love myself for who I was and be proud that I was HEALTHY, not a supermodel that spends thousands on plastic surgery. lol Since realizing this I'm trying to just focus on my health, not my looks, because luckily I don't want the whole world to think I'm pretty, because I know my fiance loves me and thinks I'm beautiful no matter what. :)

      TheRonster9319 What's wrong with the word negroid? It's the human phenotype that is native to Sub-Saharan Africa.
      Also, the 'Victorian woman' was also extremely off. Just type 'Victorian paintings' on Google images and you will see that the ideal woman was definitely not an unhealthy fat monster.

      @Matryoshkarina 9 лет назад +12

      AmauryPenseur i think the word 'negroid' is viewed as offensive (if you haven't noticed already lol). but yeah, i think BuzzFeed's point with that model was just to show someone who /does/ have brown skin rather than someone darker or paler.

    • @FeeOJLee
      @FeeOJLee 9 лет назад +35

      ***** You're very right negroid is very offensive and also you should see what kind of person AmauryPenseur is due to the fact that they just called the woman who was used for Victorian times an unhealthy fat monster... Just because its not your standard beautiful doesn't make the person a monster or unhealthy. I know many women who are shaped like that who can still out run and out exercise me, a 120 pound female, soooo idk where they're coming from.

      That's not even a little bit true. Especially in modern society, ideal body types are perpetuated by women. Videos like these just keep that myth going. I've never once heard a man claim that a thigh gap made any difference in the appearance of a women, yet in this video, it is claimed that that is one of the main factors of "beauty".
      Are we never going to talk about the ideal body types for men? It's actually much more difficult for a man to fit into his ideal body type than it is for a woman to fit into her's.
      Unnaturally large muscles, perfect facial aesthetics, nearly unhealthy bodyfat percentages, tall, above average penis size, etc etc.

    So basically up until the late 60s the ideal body type swung to a slimmer build? So after hundreds of years, the body type favoured fuller figures and bigger builds it switched probably less than 50 years to a slimmer build? Wow! And the backlash smaller people get ...? I wish there was no ideal body or a standard and that people would just promote healthy living and eating regardless of body type. I also hate the double standards too in terms of size. I'm all for health. Being big doesn't necessarily mean the person is overweight and also being small doesn't mean the person is unhealthy. Please love your body type but if you're overweight/underweight, honestly please seek help and do something it isn't healthy and can cause health complications. Don't live in denial, do something for yourself, you deserve it!

      In the Roman Empire, they even made fat-looking statues of some emperors - even if they were probably not fat, e.g. Emperor Titus - as a sign of the wealth of the whole country.
      But nowadays, it's no longer difficult to be a fat, unhealthy pig with diabetes and damaged joints.

    • @hearmymotoredheart
      @hearmymotoredheart 9 лет назад +46

      flayuhat I think you're exaggerating just a wee bit on the "completely" part just to get your whine on, but it is entirely possible to achieve health at any size. If you're eating a clean, balanced diet, moving regularly, and your blood work checks out, is that not healthy? I've worked with plenty of thin people who are severely malnourished, eat shitty food because of their "fast metabolism", and their blood work indicates an early grave. But because they're skinny, you'd assume they're healthy. Now, take someone who's a size 10 US (14 Australia, 12 UK, 40 Europe) - their weight distribution may be different, but they could be much more active and pay more attention to what they eat than this smaller person. They've got a much better chance of living a full and complication-free life. Ergo, appearances can be deceiving. There is a difference between someone who's curvy and someone who's fat, but fat does not necessarily mean lazy, loser, or anything else that tends to be attached to it. Fat's just a word, like curvy or skinny. If health is what it boils down to, then there is no one single model for health. As i've explained, it comes in many forms.

    • @flayuhat
      @flayuhat 9 лет назад +22

      liepinshtein After reading this one short comment of mine, I think you're assuming just a wee bit much about me and my thoughts/opinions/beliefs just to get your preachy-preach on ^__^
      I am already well aware of everything you wrote about in your comment. I know that slightly overweight people can be healthy. I don't assume that skinny people are healthy. I don't think a size 10 US is big.
      Sure I exaggerated a little to describe this whole "fat-positive" and "I'm not fat I'm just CURVY" bs that is so popular right now. So what.
      Oh and as for the whole "it is entirely possible to achieve health *at any size*" claim, I don't think that's true for the majority of people. Healthy people with clean, balanced diets and regular exercise aren't particularly fat, and they shouldn't be underweight (in regards to their body type) either. (this is just in general; there may be special cases/circumstances which go against the norm).

    • @hearmymotoredheart
      @hearmymotoredheart 9 лет назад +12

      flayuhat I don't think many people take into account that autoimmune diseases, CNS disorders, medications etc. can (annoyingly) impair someone's best efforts at being within their recommend weight range. A person with fibromyalgia, for example, is lacking the digestive enzymes required to absorb the nutrients from their food and process fats and proteins, thus why it's even harder for people with this condition to get their weight down. Someone with IBS can't eat the same foods. All i'm saying is that there are more reasons than you might think.
      Health at any size, if we want to speak broadly, is definitely achievable, and is about attitude and lifestyle more than measurements and stats. The number on a scale and the BMI are not entirely accurate measures of health, so much as defining health for the individual regardless of what the cultural image might be. Basically, if you're eating a toxin-free diet, getting regular exercise, and your blood work is A+, and you're still plus-size, then that's the best picture of health for you. It's how you feel first, and how you look second.

    It'd be nice to watch one video with an overweight person without the whole RUclips community overlooking the point to a video and focuses on the un-related fat person.
    You have to remember some people genuinely can't help being overweight.. Imagine yourself being overweight, because you just are, can't help it and you read offensive comments like some of these.
    It's the same with being underweight which doesn't receive nearly as much attention, some people like me genuinely can't put on weight, no matter what we eat. I'm 23 and weigh 10 stone and have done since i was like 16, i eat plenty but just have the best metabolism a human can have. Of course the ignorant sons of bitches our fellow humans are i get told lots that's i need to put weight on, "get some meat on those bones" and asked if i'm anorexic.
    I often think what it is people think gives them the right to ask me shit like that, because obviously i'm self-conscience about it. And it's simple really, its just the affects from all the media attention overweight people have had over the decades compared with being skinny. You're much less likely to make fun of a fat person for being fat to their face then you are a skinny person for being skinny, because in societies mind being skinny and not being able to put on weight is seen as some sort of luxury? So how could you offend me? Oh you weak minded ignorant fools.

      TheKeikoIsALie - Bethany Symons
      Indeed, though i'm surprised people haven't learnt yet that commenting on someones weight is offensive, whatever size or shape you are. Because it's of those things all Humans feel self-consciense about. Even those toned up gym people, you could say they're the most self-conscience of all because a lot of people like that are after an image society and media deem desirable. Lets be honest, going to the gym is rarely for your health.

    • @BananononJakuzure
      @BananononJakuzure 9 лет назад +6

      TheKeikoIsALie - Bethany Symons eeeh, that's for some. Some. A lot of overwieght people say they have slow metabolisms and thus cannot lose weight, when in reality, their metabolism may be much faster than that of someone half their size. It's much more rare that medication or a condition would disallow someone to lose weight, and even in many of those cases, it's treatable. Same way around for someone who's very skinny and can't seem to gain weight. They don't eat enough. Anectodal evidence here, but I've multiple friends who are as skinny poles and people claim they have fast metabolisms when in reality, neither of them eat breakfast, barely eat lunch, and have small dinners. It's hard to blame something the majority is suffering from on something that only affects a small minority, and especially when that change of weight has been most common within the past 20-50 years.

      They should've mentioned that fatter bodies were admired around the 1900s, because more body fat was a sign that your family was wealthy enough to afford large and caloric meals. And in the 1950s, curvy women were the ideal woman to marry because wider thighs and bigger breasts usually mean a wider pelvic bone and better lactation, so with the "american dream" of the time being of families with many children, those traits were very much desired in those times.

    As a Greek girl who loves philosophy, let me enlighten you. In contrast to Plato, who believed that women should be educated and could reach any high within society, Aristotle, his student, had, as it seems, a different opinion. He infamously stated that women are unfinished men. But, that certainly does not mean that women were considered "disfigured" versions of men in ancient Greece.

    You can tell what the ideal was just by looking at older paintings of those times. A lot of desirable women during earlier, famine ages WERE chubby simply because they could afford to eat; and even now a lot of places in the world values such women. It's a status symbol(even for men). In first world countries where we can afford to throw away food, being bigger doesn't emphasis any status or anything else.
    Heck even fairly recently you have people like Twiggy who changed the way modeling looked, taking it from pinups like Marilyn to thinner women like Twiggy herself. So obviously there was a different standard for different places. People need to stop projecting their butthurt because some cultures find fat people attractive. It DOES NOT affect you at ALL.

    • @TGxNihilum
      @TGxNihilum 9 лет назад +7

      Desirable =/= attraction. Attraction isn't taught. If weight is a sign of status, and that is desirable, you're arguably attracted to the status, not the person. Like a young girl dating an older wealthier man... She may find the money or power attractive, but not his nasty wrinkly scrotum. The same is said for these disgustingly sickly looking current models in size 0's that look like they could break into a million pieces from a small fall. No one would find that attractive unless taught to. Extremes either way are bad.. and it's even worse to teach both are okay.

    • @jasminea2274
      @jasminea2274 9 лет назад +3

      TGxNihilum
      Yes of course, you're right in that regard. I was saying that regardless of why it was desirable, that was the ideal for that time. If not starving during that time was a less attractive outcome than marrying someone that they didn't physically like, then that's why it was desirable. But then again, death and sickness usually are on the lower end of things, so maybe they had more important things to concentrate on than procreation lol.

    Looking at the comment section of BuzzFeed videos makes me feel really nauseous, because people are so full of hate, so sexist, so racist, so superficial.. yes, the video has its flaws when it comes to accuracy, and it's okay to mention that. But some people go over-board SO extremely, they just spread their shitty attitude everywhere, it makes me sick.
