A friendly reminder to everyone (& Glamour, you really should have included this in the video), that the feather bans were also 100% used to criminalize Indigenous peoples who used feathers in their clothing/etc. Many of these communities would only use found feathers, which was part of their significance, & would also pass feathers down. That didnt matter, though, Indigenous folks would be fined &/or incarcerated for their use of feathers under these laws despite the fact that these communities were absolutely not contributing to declining bird populations & the fact that some of the feathers / clothing using feathers were spiritually significant or essential to performing certain ceremonies, etc.
I agree, it’s more about the production of clothes that are being banned and it’s not meant to control what people want to wear (as there are faux alternatives)

Yeah, but there has to be a line. You should be able to do whatever you want to do as long as it doesn't effect others. If a man or woman wears a indecent outfit it makes the people around them uncomfortable. Also how come this is restricted to women? This video also states that men were oppressed by the authorities as well.
Samson I know but the video only expressly showed women, I 100% believe the same should be true for men. And obviously I don’t think people should run around nude, but I do believe that most more than that I’d fone
Just Boosterz The cross dressing thing only effected men. The hat and fur jackets effected men. The American flag thing effected men, the slap wrist thing effected men. The reason it seems like it only effects woman is because they only used female actresses, except for the 1950s for obvious reasons.
To add to Samson's list: The shorts ban affected men, and the bathing suit rule also affected men (there are even old photos of men getting their suits measured at the beach).
You dont live in the "times", you live in the right place. A lot of people here seem to forget how many countries are still perpetuating those backwards things, and oddly enough feminists wont talk about the women who are obliged and even beaten and threatened to dress a certain way in islamic countries.
Cross dressing bans are still an issue we continue to fight for. Anti-drag and anti-trans laws are on the rise. But remember they police what everyone can wear. These laws will affect many cisgender heterosexual people too
Faux fur is NOT a good alternative. Neither is faux leather /pleather. This is something I've only recently learned after years of buying faux leather jackets. Fake fur and fake leather is all just plastic, and is harmful to the environment, namely the ocean. Especially faux fur, since the individual hairs are all just strands of super dangerous microplastic. I've decided that if for some reason I really need fur or leather for something, I will buy the real deal secondhand, like at a Goodwill. That way I'm not giving money to either harmful industry. Try that too
@@funtimenotalongtime6122 Nah I don't agree with this. I feel weird about wearing real animal products on my skin seeing as I don't eat them either, and thus would not want to buy them secondhand. However for those who do, it's not funding the industry that produces it or increasing the demand in any way, so I don't see an issue with it.
Leather and fur are so heavily treated (to a point where it's detrimental to the third world countries they are processed in) they do not decompose naturally.
@@funtimenotalongtime6122 It's marginally better than supporting the industry directly, since your money is going to Goodwill and not the manufacturers who support killing animals for textiles. So, yes, it is still better.
Um, Annette Kellerman was arrested for wearing a man's racing swimsuit as she was smashing swim records all over the UK, and was the first woman to attempt swimming across the English channel. Racing suits for women didn't exist, and she was arrested multiple times even when she wore full length wool stockings with her mens suit. PLEASE!!! Don't reduce her historical contributions for women in sports to "arrested for too short of bathing suit".
I kind of assumed that tbh, but it definitely would have been nice if they mentioned that. I know it's because these videos are short, but they could have reworded it while keeping the video the same length.
the bathing suit incident in the video is entirely different. I doubt the person knew about this sportswoman. They were instead commenting on the general law that swimsuits had to be no more than 6 inches above the knee; that law has nothing to do with the sportswoman you’re talking about. It was just general sexism at the time.

They had beach patrollers for quite some time. My grandma was only telling me a few weeks ago about how she and my grandfather got kicked off an almost empty beach for simply kissing lmao, this was in the 60s in Australia.
what she meant is that since dresses and skirts are flowier, it was easier for men to look at what was beneath it. But with simple pants, it is harder to see someone's bare skin under it since it won't flow up (unless it's see-through or something idk). The irony is that something that had less of a chance to expose skin (pants) was banned, though something that had multiple chances to expose skin (skirts) were implied.
I never THREW mine at anybody, but I did sometimes do a trick where I'd say "Hold out your wrist." "Why?" "Just do it. I promise it'll only take a second." (WHAP!) "AAAA! wait I'm now wearing a thing." And then THEY'D turn right around and try it on the next unsuspecting kid. XD
Lol, what? I went to a high school not to long ago to pick up my friend's daughter, and they had girls wearing leggings so stretched out that they were practically stockings; you could see the girls' bright colored thongs. To make things worse, all the girls dressed like that had crop tops

I knew there was a catch to that law. That a sensible law would end up being used against a minority.

It really makes me boil with hatred to see people telling woman what they can and can’t wear. I’m glad I live in the times that I do.
Try that too
I don't like real fur either
Then dont buy it at all.....including "goodwill" technically that's not any better
A2Z83 yes it did, were you not watching? The cops came and it said it sparked lgbt rights movement.
the bathing suit incident in the video is entirely different. I doubt the person knew about this sportswoman. They were instead commenting on the general law that swimsuits had to be no more than 6 inches above the knee; that law has nothing to do with the sportswoman you’re talking about. It was just general sexism at the time.

ur both wrong; they meant that in old fashioned or old ads, they showed men looking up the skirt of a woman and yet men forced them to wear pants
what she meant is that since dresses and skirts are flowier, it was easier for men to look at what was beneath it.
But with simple pants, it is harder to see someone's bare skin under it since it won't flow up (unless it's see-through or something idk). The irony is that something that had less of a chance to expose skin (pants) was banned, though something that had multiple chances to expose skin (skirts) were implied.

Considering the petroleum products and pollution concerns, faux fur is not a good alternative

Exactly! At least fur is biodegradable
🤷🏻♀️ So better we kill animals?
adhdmagpie leather is just as bad
@@joshuabartlett5575 there are several different tanning methods. Some are quite natural and old fashioned. That said, it is more sustainable to use stuff like wool, rather than a piece of skin with the fur still attached
Measuring the length had to be brought on by some pervy official. It makes my skin crawl.
Tickety Blue Yeah. Heck, if that still happened I would’ve whacked them.
1970s girl looks like a legit supermodel, better looking then some that are considered supermodels nowadays. Such a natural beauty.
True, I wish I had her body shape oof.
That outfit tho... yikes!
She looked incredibly ill. Not as in too skinny, but seriously sick.
Stunning
@Muammar Al Gaddafi Rothschild Rockefeller Eagle What does being black have to do with being a supermodel? One of the greatest supermodels of all time (if not the best) is black🤦🏻♀️
I can't believe I've been watching these since maybe 2018 or 17 and were adding the 2010's now. Time really flies
Love it! My mom has an American flag skirt of hers signed by Abbie Hoffman! In true Abbie tradition, he spelled it "Amerika".
That's the way we spell it in The Netherlands!
@@ashdendekker6038 and Germany!
@@ls200076 Considering how the English "c" is pronounced differently in other languages not surprising. Think you would be hard pressed to find it spelt exactly the way it is in English.

Oh yah.. i remember when i was little, slightly after 2007, girls were displaying their thongs and underwear often... for fashion looks and displaying of brands
Kinda glad the trend died
Lol
and thongs were really meant for the opposite to not show your underwear
Kinda glad?
Too bad the trend of guys wearing their pants low is still going strong.
@@Cerinaya *ghetto dudes
Well they're on display again when these girls wear see through leggings. I remember when I was 17 and this girl came to school with leggings and you could literally see her hot pink thong through her black leggings. And she got suspended.
Ok but the lady at 2:19 has such beautiful eyes 😍
Star Dust I’m fairly certain that those are not natural. But they are beautiful nonetheless.
Nadah Valadanzouj While it’s most likely that they’re fake there are African Americans who have blue eyes. If she’s mixed it could be natural. But it is very rare, so I can see why you think that.
Star Dust dude. Those are brown eyes. Look in the right eye and up to the top. It’s darker and doesn’t show any blue.
Lee Art ... are you looking at the same person as me? She has grey blue eyes.
Star Dust she is beautiful overall 🤩
*me who thought there would be a section for 2020 but then remembered this was posted in 2018*
Too early for 20s anyways
To be fair, the underwear thing was an issue for men, too. There was a trend in the 2000s of guys wearing baggy pants that exposed their boxers. I remember it being an issue because it was often associated with gang/prison culture. Schools would ban baggy pants, and there were even some towns that passed laws banning baggy pants.
Oh yeah. I can't imagine being exposed to such shame and restrictions. Poooor men.
too be fair, it was gross to my classmates walkin around with baggy pants like that back in elementary...
@@camilajimenez9575 No need to be so cruel. What an awful person.
I thought the bans would be cool and rebellious and something I could adopt to my own wardrobe but it’s literally clothing items we wear everyday I never would have thought these articles of clothing were banned in the past
Men: *"Hey! Your not aloud to show that much nudity while swimming!"*
Me: *Shows up in a jumper*
Can we all agree the girl for the 70’s is ✨GORGEOUS✨
She was rocking that American flag shirt!
I can’t believe that no pants in the business community for women weren’t allowed. Especially the ridiculous rule of no shorts. How things have changed
This whole women needing to wear skirts thing just feels like men wanting easy access to women
@@Evyy_draws Trousers seem more modest to me. Even today women have to wear heels, makeup, "right" undergarments, to look professional. They don't care about modesty, only what looks "Scandalous" .
