"Sometimes I want to shake you girls when you worry too much about being pretty, or not being pretty as though prettiness were a woman's only attraction." This is something that still applies today! Great advice Miss Stuyvesant!
Sure, but then she immediately changes the girls appearance to be “prettier” instead of asserting it’s more worthwhile to happy and healthy. It does an awful job of hiding how much everything in this time WAS about making women pretty and ready for marriage. It’s ghastly just how much people are watching this and not picking up on that.
@@e.tominsteadand how she literally explained at the beginning how it is the most important thing. very contradictory. but i do understand the premise
@@e.tominstead I wouldn't necessarily agree. It was to show what happens when you do all the things mentioned. Being active and eating healthy makes you slimmer and looking more radiant, wearing the right clothes for your body type and shape can elevate your style and sometimes visually even posture. Often self care and beauty get too mixed up. Someone taking care of themselves and looking well doesn't always mean that they're vain and beauty focused. Simple self care naturally makes you look better.
How interesting that the same treatments for “how to be pretty” are the same remedies for depression . Taking daily showers , getting enough sleep , eating nutritious foods , exercising/being playful outdoors where you get sunshine , getting your tasks done vigorously / being productive . Basically doing things to improve yourself as a whole make you prettier without even trying . Love this video . Girls today should watch it
Okay but the idea they’re providing is that you should do these things to improve your looks. Everything, especially then, for a young lady is centered around her looks so she’ll someday be marriable. These things should be promoted because they can make you happier and stronger. Writing letters is nothing like texting. 🙄 The time gap between replies means people didn't spend all their time doing it. And listening to swing music is the same as listening to any music, nothing like watching brainwashed nutters on tik tok all day. The whole video is her trying to get girls to conform to the beauty standards of the time in order for them to be “pretty” so i dont think that one statement is worth much
@@psychoPilgrim36 maybe it's because we viewed it differently. For me, I think this statement meant that a girl has many more beautiful qualities than just being pretty and that it's ok even if she doesn't consider herself pretty because she still has other qualities that can be considered beautiful and attractive. Maybe I didn't analyze the whole video that well or maybe it's because I only scratched through the surface. But anyway, this was actually a positive view on my side. I really like how this is more about being beautiful by treating yourself right because self-care is so important. A happy mind and body is what makes someone beautiful in my opinion. Not cosmetics, fashionable clothes, etc., but how you feel. Of course, if makeup and fashionable clothes can make you feel good great, but it's very important to feel good even without those embellishments. This applies to everyone regardless on personal beliefs, gender, whether you dress more masculine or feminine, etc..

I think this video is so sad. We DO worry too much about how we look. We have all been told (like in this video, approximately 70 years ago) that being beautiful is something that we should strive for. We think that being pretty makes us confident and feel good, and especially that it will make people like us more. In reality we get anxious about our looks and our confidence is shattered to peaces. We start to think that we are not pretty enough, like she says in the video: you can always be prettier. That is so sad. If we just abandoned the idea that being beautiful is important in any way, we would be so much happier. We would see that there is so much more to us and our personalities than the way we look.
@@TheMocao well you tell me can you really love someone based on their looks? Is it really a healthy relationship if it is based on falling in love at first sight? Your personality is much more important.
@@noone3188 Personality is indeed important, but I've never met a person yet that didn't LOOK at the person first - unless they were physically blind. Usually it's our attraction to a person that allows us to get to know that person's personality. That's all I'm saying. If looks are not important to you then that's great - but if they are important to someone else then that's fine too. It's called individuality.
@@noone3188 Perfectionism is an issue all on its own, it applies to everything. Why try to be highly academically achieving? You can always do better. You'll never get 100% will you? So don't bother at all eh? Applying your logic sounds preposterous. Many people bother with looks because we're social animals. And it truly does give great confidence. To know that you aren't a stinky, rag wearing pathetic little thing, is good. Of course I'm not saying that the obsession with plastering on makeup, or fast fashion, or most things caused by social media are any good. But generally to be well kempt, proffessional when need be, beautiful or handsome when need be, and so on, is incredibly important to healthy self image and social standing, relationships with others be try romantic, work, friendly etc. As for physical appearance for intimate relationships. Without sexual attraction it doesn't quite work does it? Sexual attraction is really about the body and its presentation. The other side of intimate attraction, to a person, also requires physical appearance to be well kept not because society culture mumbo jumbo. But because we naturally seek out those that have it together. If one looks shabby, unkempt etc, they obviously don't have it together. Physical appearances aren't just some useless social construct, they can tell you about a person. What I'm saying is the physical is an extension of the psychological. You're evidently utterly in love with the idea of personality, well the way someone looks tells you a lot about them
I like the idea that you can do daily tasks like cleaning, dusting, walking up stairs but with proper form instead of slouching. I do a lot of housework and don't get the chance to leave the house so this genuinely seems helpful.
I actually really like this video. She understands that everyone wants to look good, and gives actual advice. Nowadays, if you tell someone you have appearance issues, they'll tell you "appearance isn't everything" or something along those lines. While that is true, saying isn't going to stop me from being insecure. I love how she had both those aspects here. I wish we could take the good things from the past, we really need them sometimes.
i think it depends on the person. but body neutrality does work if you do it properly. and based on this comment you were not doing it properly. do not criticise things you know nothing about.
I love how mobile phones weren’t a thing so no social media and endless scrolling but they would still stay up really late and listen to music until early hours. Teenagers will be teenagers😂 Some things don’t change.
So true! We used to have book-mobiles. They were Utility vans converted into a traveling library during summer break. I've never seen a comment section with so many people having so many preconceptions being so pleasantly surprised. Don't assume something is "outdated" because society has "progressed." There is such a thing as timeless wisdom and advice, after all!
We didn't have that misconception out of thin air. What we thought was widely accepted. But to hear this specifically wasn't the case was indeed surprising.

And the woman rebuked her for that, emphasizing that beauty isn't simply a pretty face. And actually, she way very much AGAINST the beauty standards when saying that what really matters is self care (healthy food, exercise, sleep, washing routine). As for the other comment. In our school PE teachers did health class in 8th grade back when I was in (which admittedly was a while ago, but no, I'm no boomer). @@psychoPilgrim36 it's still pretty much the beauty standard now

*When you've learnt more about beauty and health in a video from the 1940s compared to your whole life*
I think this video is so sad.
@@noone3188 tell me when was the last time you fell in love with someone's personality at first sight. Lol! Just sayin'

@@noone3188
Perfectionism is an issue all on its own, it applies to everything.

I’ve been struggling with depression since June of this year and I’ve completely neglected myself. I’ve gained 50lbs, I stopped grooming well, I stopped wearing my pretty clothes, and I stopped wearing makeup completely which were things that helped me feel confident and beautiful. This video was a reminder that self-love is very important and it motivated me to start taking better care of myself.
I'm rooting for you!! Try yoga with Adrienne free on you tube ❤️ it changed my life
Same Girl. I gained 40 pounds since covid and my clothes don't fit anymore including my bras. It's so depressing, I have to prioritize really caring for myself.
I had the opposite problem of losing weight during Covid, and that's no good either. I had no working refrigerator for 3 mos.(thanks, American Home Shield), and had to have all my upper teeth removed, entirely due to a case of horrible malpractice on the part of a sociopathic dentist. My clothes don't fit, either, and I look awful. I moved to a really stupid state, and everyone assumes I'm on meth, and the whole place is weird, racially segregated and much chillier in the way of friendliness among neighbors.
I miss so much my old home, and there were vending machines in my building and a familiar pizza place. I hadn't realized how much I had depended on these. I don't like even going to stores around here, but going back isn't an option now.
I WISH I had gained my weight back and was still chubby so much more than becoming malnourished (and emaciated at one point, which was only sad and scary). For one thing, some of my clothes would still fit. I started getting strange symptoms because my health had been badly compromised. This is just as bad, just in a different way.
Can we trade?
@@erinthesystem9608 I'm so sorry you're going through all this, that sounds awful. It's my opinion that I'd rather be overweight than underweight so I'm very sorry for what's happening to you and I hope that you can find a way to restore your health. 💗
Don't give up girls! It's never late start love and care for yourself. I wish you strenght and courage.
I was crying by the end of this. That woman was such a gem. Her points in this video are something that her time and our current world are neglecting so much. What I wouldn’t have given to have someone say this to me when I was 15.

Wow, from the title I assumed this would be something that aged poorly, but it actually is better then a lot of modern stuff.
Odd how modern feminism is more toxic than the "patriarchal" 1940's...
i love how she talked about makeup and hair being like icing on a cake and saying how it’s nice and all, but if the cake isn’t good you loose interest! i feel as if that’s really true like it’s great if you do your makeup and hair nicely but if you are rude or disrespectful it doesn’t matter anymore if you did your hair and makeup because no one would want to be your friend.
If you're rude, no matter how physically attractive and fit you are, almost nobody will like you. So, make - up and such are truly just the icing on the cake.
I like you and I like that you like cats
That's not what she said. She's saying that if you eat unhealthy foods, don't get enough sleep and exercise, it won't matter how well your makeup and clothes look. Being healthy and clean should be the priority. I don't recall anything about rudeness.
delor b that is true that she never mentioned that stuff but i interpret it that way along with what you said. 🙂
@@delorbb2298 I agree w Cat Lover. She's talking about inner beauty. I don't care what a person looks like, if they are kind, warm, loving, have a great sense of humor, a great personality. It's character that matters far more than looks.
Pretty or handsome models are ugly when they are vapid and empty inside. Plain people are beautiful when they are beautiful inside.
And Trump is ugly b/c he is cruel and has no conscience, look how he's sending innocent Kurds to their death today, I've never seen such an atrocity in my life in America.

"sometimes i could shake you girls when you worry so much about being pretty or not being pretty as if it's a girls-only attraction" this also works in 2021
No, it wasn't an affirmation. She said the girl could be pretty if she did all these things that made her more attractive to men. The lady had already said she wasn't attractive because of her "round face" and "the way she wore her hair." We don't exist to live up to someone else's standards of beauty.
@@christineegan465 no she didn't... First of all she never once said "attractive to men". She never made it about men, she made it about the girl's own self esteem. I feel that it's more of a modern thing to equate beauty to how many men want to fk a girl.
It's the girl who said she had a round face, wears her hair wrong and doesn't look pretty. And the woman rebuked her for that, emphasizing that beauty isn't simply a pretty face. And actually, she way very much AGAINST the beauty standards when saying that what really matters is self care (healthy food, exercise, sleep, washing routine).
The girls who attented were there because they wanted to feel prettier and better about themselves. The woman used that energy and guided it into a healthy path. She didn't tell her lies, didn't give an unobtainable goal, didn't play down her insecurities but rather showed her her own beauty.
Its true that we do not have to live up to other's expectations. Its also true that if a girl seeks guidance she should get a good one. And, to be honest, we girls DO care a lot about how others perceive us.

Weirdly enough the advice here isn't bad or out of date, it is extremely topical even today, she encourage everyone to exercise, take care of yourself have proper daily baths, have proper sleep, spend time outdoor and eat healthy, rather than worrying about your face or hair, or about the fact that you are pretty enough or not
And what weird? Simple advices. What do you expect? People don't change as much.
