Here’s the thing: I’ve gotten my legs waxed for about two years and recently switched to shaving and I can say for a fact that the hair does not grow as nice with shaving and grows quicker. When I got waxed, the hair started getting prickly after two weeks and with shaving, it gets prickly after day 2
I love that we've been told since the 1940's that we need 8-9 hours of sleep a night and shaving your legs doesn't cause the hair to grow back thicker or darker but women still don't listen ahah
Mine grow darker and thicker when I shave them. My hair is naturally light brown so I can see a noticeable difference. However when I wax and the hair is removed from the follicles, it grows back light brown and smooth.
I believe their soaps were super strong and stripped their hair of all oils. If they washed it as often as we do today, they would probably have scraggly, thin hair!

@@seeleygirl6178 And we do that because people who sell products claim it is necessary to abuse ourselves in this way; they appeal to insecurity to sell products.
They probably suggested two weeks because shampoo in the 40s was not always PH balanced. Washing your hair too much with highly acidic shampoo isn't good for the scalp.
Ahhhh, what a nice and wholesome video... In 1948 my mom was 19, she has since past away at the age of 87 but I still yearn to experience her life when she was young and beautiful and single. Thank you for uploading this video and helping me to see my mom as an eternal beauty.
@Adam Buentello if you look hard enough you will find those kind of people in any age and time of history. ...but this video isn't about that so don't try and ruin it by posting your stinky vomit reply.
I was born in 1948. The woman in this film looks very much like my mother. I suppose it is because of the styles then. My mother wore her hair like that. Sometimes she would put my hair in pin curls as well. I am happy that your mom lived a long life, I lost mine when she was 44 (I was 18), so I appreciate seeing these old films more than most.
The moment when she washes her hair in the bathroom sink omg!...we have been so accustomed to our comfort that this is a great reminder to appreciate the comfort we have today. And as for cosmetics and fancy products....Less is more! Thank you!
@@MssBeccaSpain Bless her soul :) My grandmother in Tunisia, North Africa, didnt' have a separate bathroom in her house, but the shower was made up of a hoze in the open roof patio, and we'd hang a sheet for privacy....As babies we'd just bathe in plastic buckets....It has helped me appreciate my comfort growing up in France in relative "luxury"! ;)
It can be so relaxing to wash your hair the ‘old way’! In the countryside i would wash my hair in the sauna: the firewoods heated up some water in a metal basin, which would then be mixed in a bucket with cold water from the well. Even though it took way more time, it felt quite rewarding at the end :-)
I love how they say to wash your hair every 2 weeks. We wash our hair far too often, especially for someone like me with curly hair. Shampoo companies want us to think we need to wash hair daily. They’re wrong.
Heidi Hudgins yep! I wash my hair once every two ...sometimes once every two and a half weeks. And that’s how I think my hair has always been so thick all of these years!
Oily hair does require more washing, but I agree with you as I have dry hair. Try to leave the natural oils alone and let them build up a bit. The shampoo companies used to say lather, rinse, and repeat (i.e., use more product!). That would only be necessary if your hair is truly quite dirty. Daily washing, except if you really need it, will ensure that your scalp will stay too dry. It's an individual thing. I easily go four days or more.
For some reason just watching this brought me back to Jr. High and Seventeen Magazine and I can just smell the Noxema and the Prell shampoo (out of the tube) or either BODY ON TAP! ha
When they say the 40s/50s had unrealistic beauty standards, this is honestly great advice and a very informative presentation about daily personal hygiene, most of which I had NO IDEA ABOUT! Not to mention a lovely message of making the most of what nature has given you. Love it!
Very few people had showers then. They only had bathtubs. I grew up that way. We washed our hair in the basement, using the utility laundry sink.. Big, deep sink. That's all we knew. Everyone did their hair like that. I am 71. We had Home Ecconomic classes that taught many of these things. I got a big laugh out of some of these comments. This video brought back many memories. I still use the routines I learned decades ago. If it isn't broken, don't fix it! 😅😅
Pin curls. Just as the video shows, curl your hair while wet. Sleep on it and if it is dry in the morning, unpin it and it will poof out when you brush it.
I guess this is why I always admire women's beauty from the 40s and the 50s... They looked so clean and fresh back then, probably because they weren't using tons of different products, plus they weren't using products with perfume and chemicals things in it (unlike a lot of people do today). I don't know but this is so inspiring, it doesn't sound old or obsolete at all, this routine looks very accurate. I'm going to get my inspiration from this kind of videos, people were just so much more glamorous at that time. Thank you for posting this anyway, very interesting and surprisingly helpful !

It’s actually really easy to use and super safe as well. It’s also better on your skin than those plastic disposable razors, as the sharpness of the blade makes it glide on smoothly without scraping your skin (the disposable ones do. They also pull the hair). I never pay too much attention when I shave but never have a single nick.
OMG, I had forgotten about those razors. I used to nick the hell out of my legs, especially my shins, and many times I'd come out of the bathroom with little wads of toilet paper stuck to my legs to control the bleeding.
I’m 38 and I hardly ever see a woman as attractive as the main woman in this video. The women who were in their 20s during the 1940s were truly queens of beauty.
This is true, simple washing with a gentle soap on face and body will do the trick and a little face cream plus body cream. I'm only 64 and just now seeing a few fine lines. God do I remember those old razors, and by shaving will not make your hair grow back thicker.
my dad is also 89 .. he raised us to use soap on our bodies, but only hot water on our faces. Ive never had an acne problem, and dont look too bad for my age either! The older generations actually do know some pretty cool stuff, lol! Happy Holidays from Las Vegas!
Also the fact that today a person can have an identical diet and workout and be on average 30 lbs heavier than a person in the 1970s... environmental pollutants and the general effects of capitalism are far more intense now than they were in the 50s also.

Washing the hair every two weeks sounds really gross. Daily washing isn't necessary, but I have to wash mine at least every 3-4 days or it gets very greasy.
Don’t know, I cringed a lil when he said wash hair “once every two weeks” lol. longest I can last is maybe 3-4 days before feeling very yucky. But I agree, I’ve heard that excessive washing hair is not good, n better to let some natural hair oil build up sometimes, instead of washing hair every day. Not sure what’s true or not, I’ll still be washing my hair regularly.
My Mom was born in 1932. She got up every morning, washed her face with water, soap, washcloth. And at the end of her grooming routine, always put a very thin layer of vasiline . Well into her 60’s people asked about her skin routine. She had gorgeous skin, buttery soft. In her 80’s at the end of her life , nurses would tell her how pretty she was! I strongly feel that the 1940’s was a time that epitomizes when our hygiene, style and beauty tips were at its peak! They had much more sound advice in the 1940’s than SO many beauty tutorials now..I would have LOVED to grow up in this time.
I love how they say "expensive creams aren't necessary." It is complete BS how the beauty industry makes u believe you need a 10-step beauty product routine with products costing as much as several hundred dollars. I'm 26 now and not that I'm old, but I have been staying out of the sun since I was 20 and washing my face with soap daily and only using a plain cheap moisturizer on dry spots when necessary. People always rave about my smooth and clear and bright skin. I am under the firm belief that in skin care, less is more. Cleanser, sunscreen and spot treating with moisturizer is really all u need.
I'm always shocked by these older videos I see, because you expect them to be bad and full of disinformation, but instead they are non-invasive and give good advice
Beauty School Dropout, yes thank u for saying so. Different hair/scalp, different care. I get tired of people saying that washing my hair daily or every other day is too much. I have a VERY oily scalp. I’ve tried MANY times to go without for an extended period and it is jus nasty gross. It didn’t “retrain” anything. Not only do I wash it every or every other day, but I blow it dry that much as well. I have very healthy hair. My hair dresser is actually amazed how healthy it is from how much I wash & dry it. It’s just THAT oily that it moisturizes it plenty even tho I wash it so much. I wish I didn’t have to wash it all the time, it’s actually a pain. My sister has gorgeous spiral curly hair and it’s a bit more coarse. She can go a lot longer witout washin her hair and it doesn’t become smelly oil slick like mine
I thought the same thing! Wet towels & wash clothes were hung in the open to air dry. She wouldn't have done that in the hot Texas Gulf Coast area. We had to air everything that got damp. I had a pair of damp shoes that I put in my closet once, and in 2 days they started turning green!
It also annoys me that she doesn't properly smooth out every fold when hanging the towels. The left side of the small towel is still folded back. That destroys all of her tidiness and carefulness. Such a shame to go unnoticed in a guide for how to be clean and tidy. I'm ready disappointed by the makers. They should have been that attentive. I don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight, all the time thinking of that poor folded towel. On the morrow it will be all sore from that unnatural position and exhausted from not being able to rest because of that uncomfortable folding😖
Dermatologist told me that all of what the cosmetics industry sells is just fake packaging and fragrance and women are desperate enough or vulnerable enough to fall for it. #1 your skin can NOT absorb anything anyway so who cares how much "botanical" this or that is slathered onto it! Important to use a neutral and mild cleanser like cetaphil. No use to spend a fortune nor to expect a miracle out of any jar or bottle...

@Adam Buentello .. you are full of hate, go see a psychiatrist.
The moment when she washes her hair in the bathroom sink omg!...we have been so accustomed to our comfort that this is a great reminder to appreciate the comfort we have today. And as for cosmetics and fancy products....Less is more! Thank you!
My grandma, who died a year ago, was still washing her hair in the sink.
Even though it took way more time, it felt quite rewarding at the end :-)
sink works better
I don’t get it, how so people wash their hair if not in the sink??
I love how they say to wash your hair every 2 weeks. We wash our hair far too often, especially for someone like me with curly hair. Shampoo companies want us to think we need to wash hair daily. They’re wrong.
Heidi Hudgins yep! I wash my hair once every two ...sometimes once every two and a half weeks. And that’s how I think my hair has always been so thick all of these years!
That is because you do not have oily hair
Oily hair does require more washing, but I agree with you as I have dry hair. Try to leave the natural oils alone and let them build up a bit. The shampoo companies used to say lather, rinse, and repeat (i.e., use more product!). That would only be necessary if your hair is truly quite dirty. Daily washing, except if you really need it, will ensure that your scalp will stay too dry. It's an individual thing. I easily go four days or more.

Everyone did their hair like that. I am 71. We had Home Ecconomic classes that taught many of these things. I got a big laugh out of some of these comments. This video brought back many memories. My husband uses that kind. I tried it once and it was scary. It's not light either and I was so afraid as the blade was super sharp.

Important to use a neutral and mild cleanser like cetaphil. No use to spend a fortune nor to expect a miracle out of any jar or bottle...
@@valfletcher9285 I disagree I definitely see a difference if I use different products. Some work greatly some won't. Also skin can absorb stuff it even goes into the bloodstream. So be careful what you choose.
Dove soap and water is all I use.
@@valfletcher9285 actually, your skin absorbs 60 percent of what you put on top of it
I wash my face with dove body wash. Sometimes with a washcloth for exfoliation
“Skin scales” I knew I was a dragon.

Haha 😂
Me, too when I was a big child and often neglected what my mum told : rub your skin with (DIY) coconut oil😁
It was about 40 years ago.
These videos are the only way I can satisfy my desperate need to go back in time. Thank you so much.
