      +Madelyn Isabella Anna & Elsa come from 1840's Norway. Ariel most likely comes from somewhere in the Caribbean maybe closer to Greece. And although Alice isn't officially a princess she is often included in the set-up, but I guess Merida could also take her spot.
      But the only princesses who really have a place stated are Pocahontas and Mulan. The others life in fictional places (named or not named) that take place somewhere in a specific area.

    • @crispycol4904
      @crispycol4904 8 лет назад +10

      +Madelyn Isabella None of the Disney princesses come from a real place. The only two who have been closely pinpointed are Pocahontas, Tiana and Mulan. Jasmine lives in Agrabah which also isn't a real place. Note, Arendelle is based on Arendel a place in Norway.
      And ofc mermaids don't exist but her time period does. Because there are scenes where Ariel is human.Snow and Aurora's country is actually pretty unknown and they kinda just took assumptions in this video.

  • @gamerofedge8111
    @gamerofedge8111 3 года назад +211

    The cinematography is beautiful in this video, however considering that title is "Historically Accurate Disney Princesses" I would like to point out a few things:
    1: While overall Snow White's costume isn't glaringly inaccurate, you can tell that she's not wearing any sort of skirt support, which she definitely should be for 1500s dress, more specifically a farthingale, even something simple underneath the skirt would've given it a better silhouette, which is one of the easiest ways to match a dress to it's time-period.
    2: I'll admit I don't know much about fashion in the arabian peninsula, so I'll leave the historical accuracy of that up to someone who knows more than me.
    3: The headpiece on Tiana's looks a bit more 1950s than 20s, and the dress' fabric looks see-through, you can tell she's not wearing a dress slip, which women would usually wear in the 20s.
    4: For one thing, Sleeping Beauty takes place in Germany, not England, however at least the time period is fairly accurate, with most sources stating sleeping beauty takes place more broadly in the Medieval Era. The dress is a little bit over-layered, as dresses in this time period were usually quite simple, with one or two visible layers. That hot pink colour would most likely not exist in the 1300s, as that is 500 years before the invention of Analine dyes in the 1850s, so it would more likely be either a very dark plum colour, or a baby pink-ish colour.
    5: The hair is personally the biggest error with Belle, as women didn't wear wigs to make their hair so large, instead using a sort of cushion, and then arranging the hair around it. The reason their hair is so pale in pictures is because they powdered their hair with white powder. Another note is that the dress should be a bit wider at the hips, and less so in the front and back, this was historically achieved with a Panniers.
    I'm not trying to be rude, or overly critical, but considering the title is "Historically Accurate Disney Princesses", I think they should've taken a bit more care and consideration when designing the costumes, and in certain cases, the hair and makeup. I did gloss over Pocahontas, for the same reason I didn't make any statements on Jasmine's, and that is because I simply don't know enough about what Indigenous American's wore during the 1600's.

    • @princessjuliana7309

      Jasmine's era is... debatable. If we're gonna go by the architecture and population in the movies, there is no way Aladdin is set in pre-Islamic era. I think that Aladdin is more reminiscent of the Ottoman empire, and although the logic of the clothing still stands, she would have definitely worn something more extravagant yet concealing.

      The native american looks seems accurate, most native peoples in USA and northern Mexico used to dress very similar, the colors and patterns of their "tattoos" would be different in every tribe, as well as their ornaments, in Pocahontas case, the hair could have been lose or braided, the garments could have been like the ones in the video or bone collars, conch collars, even some feather hanging from the hair or as earrings, the tattos could have been white, bright blue or red and black like in the video but in different patterns and designs (i ignore what colors were used by Powhatan people tho), but the general idea seems very accurate.

    Alice - Victorian England (1870s-1890s)
    Wendy - Regency Era (1800-1830)
    Mulan - Wei Dynasty (400s)

    Part 3:
    Anna/Elsa: Norway, 1780-1820
    Cinderella - England, 1720
    Anastacia - Russian Civil War, 1880-1910
    Eilonwy - Wales/Ireland 1400s
    Dorothy - Dustbowl, Kansas, USA 1930s
    Merida - Scotland, 1200-1300s
    Rapunzel - Germany, 1200s
    Edit: thanks for all the clarifications, guys. And I know a few of these aren’t princesses OR Disney. But they’re either bought by Disney (Oz books/Anastasia) or add some sort of interesting historical fact. Just thought maybe having Meg or Alice would add more content in terms of history. "Pre- Islamic Arabia was a modest society. So women wore loose shapeless clothing." Yet Jasmine is one of the sassiest and fiery Disney princess who wears a crop top with straps hanging off the shoulders and distracted Jafar by seducing him 😂 Gotta love Disney!! Lol That cracked me up XD

      What I think is really gross is Ariel. She's a teenager like 16 I think, marries an older guy (isn't he 21 in the film?), plus she doesn't even know the guy cos she doesn't speak to him, they like each other based on looks, and she has the TINIEST waist line ever. I can't watch the Little Mermaid anymore. I feel too grossed out by Ariel's waist.

      Claire Marie no they aren’t cuz jasmine has Iraqi and Indian roots so she’s only half Arab and the Arab part is from Iraq not the Arabian Peninsula, which would be modern-day Saudi Arabia. Also women back then wore very revealing clothing such as what’s worn during belly dancing etc, the richer u were the more u would cover tho. Women sometimes wore a Long cover to go out in gulf Arab countries to protect their clothes and body from the heat and sand storms. Anyway I agree the outfit looked comfy as hell but just thought I would shed some light to that

      Madison stevens In a way Tiana was historically accurate for the time period she was in. Yes the green leaf dress and the costume that Charlotte gave her are a bit more late 20th century in looks for the time period but everything else she wore is reflective of the period. Not every last person dressed in flapper dress back then, especially women who had to work or could not afford the flapper look. Women in Tiana's situation before she married Naveen were lucky to own more than just a cotton house dress and low heeled shoes. Her clothes for the two jobs she worked were pretty accurate if you ask me especially what she wears to work at Buford's Diner. But she does wear a more Swinger styled dress when Facilier tries to tempt her. Out of all of the princess movies so far I'd say Princess and the Frog was the most historically accurate one of the lot.

      I do like her outfit the best out of the bunch. They should have given her a hickory-wood or locust-wood Cherokee-style or Delaware-style longbow and a quiver woven from dried honeysuckle for her bamboo arrows, tipped with bone and fletched with turkey feathers. Her hair was the only thing that they needed to redo. Women of the tribes that lived in her area wore trimmed bangs in the front and their hair in a bun in the back which was held in place with a little fan made of bamboo or a comb made of a clam-shell. You can look up old paintings and drawings of the Powhatan tribe as well as the Creek and Seminole people from that period. It's really neat. :)

      The Powhatan were never a tribe but a confederacy made up of 30 plus tribes. I am Pamunkey which is what her father or chief Powhatan was. Most of the tribes assimilated with other Virginia and North Carolina tribes. There are only 8 tribes remaining that were part of the Powhatan Confederacy and they are the Pamunkey, Mattaponi, Upper Mattaponi, Chickahominy, Eastern Chickahominy, Rappahannock, Nansemond, and Patawomack.

France (if the original author was Perrault),Germany (if the original authors were the Grimms), Italy (if the original author was Basile). According to a few sources anyways.

The original story was actually called the Sun, Moon, and Talia. The movie itself never actually says where it takes place, so I guess they just picked England.

      Arendale isnt a real place, so there wouldnt be any "historically accurate" video with anna and elsa since they live in a fictional world that never existed. Also anna and elsa have modern american accents and live in a castle/kingdom (there arent any castles or palaces or any kingdom here in america as we live in democracy) so there isnt any real time or place OR HISTORY to them
      also ariel was a mermaid who came from the ocean, mermaids are just legend and the cartoon depicts what a mermaid looked like so technically it already is "historically accurate". Plus mermaids didnt have and EXACT style then so that couldnt happen.
