I was originally planning to make a video with my own versions of historically accurate Disney princesses, but I feel like - because my focus is on European fashion - I need to make more research on the Eastern princesses. but it's still coming one day, stay tuned. also sending lot's of love to all the video creators whose videos I discussed! no hard feelings and I'm looking forward to your future work!

I think someone should make a movie based in the 20th and 21st centuries and purposely get everything as historically inaccurate as possible. Imagine: teenage girl comes in wearing bellbottoms and playing flappybird, argues with mother about feminist movement while it is unclear which wave of feminism is being portrayed (are they after the vote, labor equality or what?) Mother is churning butter by hand, and worried about her husband fighting in war. It is unclear whether he is in Vietnam or World War One because technologies, strategies and places from both are mentioned. The movie would be a hot mess and it would be glorious!

The only mention of Georgia in her original post is to say that the TIME period is hard to pin down in the movie because: "Grimsby's wearing a Georgian getup, Ariel's pink dress with the slashed sleeves subscribes to several eras from the Renaissance to the 1840s, and Eric is... Eric."
As you can see, that was a reference to the Georgian PERIOD, and neither of the two locations called Georgia. But that's Buzzfeed for ya. XD

Myb sister just pointed that out to me yesterday so we looked it up on a map, but while it's close to the Caspian sea, it doesn't border it. It's only coastline is the black Sea. Still close enough to be touched by the winds of the Caspian though I suppose.

How could they not know where the little mermaid is set? It's a Hans Christian Andersen story, not a Disney story. (All the Disney movies are adaptations, not original stories. Many are Grimms Brothers fairy tales.) Hans Christian Andersen is a Danish writer. There is a famous statue of the little mermaid in Copenhagen. This is not hard to research!

I'm glad you spoke about Claire Hummel's work and people not crediting her. The point of her "historically accurate Disney princesses" series was to take the princesses and ground them in a specific time/place/era, while still keeping the colours and major design elements of the characters, so obviously some liberties are taken with accuracy but the result is still a gorgeous image and an improvement (in terms of accuracy and detail) on the original designs. I feel like a lot of these videos haven't even looked at the descriptions she posted with her original art explaining her design choices.
Makes me sad to see people taking her work out of context and using it without credit for their own videos :|

oh my god literally. That was made by a random person using Azalea's maker, not by Azalea herself. I just can't get how it's so difficult to look up the artists they're using images from to check that they're crediting properly. Had they done so, they would have found her website and not wrongly credited her for an inaccurate drawing, making her look bad for not researching! But naturally googling historically accurate disney princesses is far quicker and easier than looking for ACTUAL REAL LIFE FASHION DOCUMENTATION. But I digress. After all, it's buzzfeed. 😂😂

That style of house would have only been built during the 1870s/1880s/1890s.
They need to go back to the Federal, Classical, and Greek Revival styles to get an accurate 1840s house from Georgia.

She talks about the silhouette of the wedding dress and how that's what she used to design the dress in the image, going for a 1980s style because giant poofy sleeves.

Actually, I don't think it is that interesting to talk about whether Disney princesses are historically accurate (everybody knows Disney people didn't know anything about anything, and especially about anything outside of US), but I would love some fashion historian's insight in how the princesses match the era the movie was made. For instance, Snow-white has that distinct 30-s noir thing going on, and Cinderella is a Grace Kelly. Could you please please please make a video about that?

@@LDrosophila Of more modern princesses mirroring modern fashion, I think Elsa is the best example - her dresses scream Ellie Saab and her braid! That sort of braid was (still sort of is) a dime a dozen in the years leading up to frozen

Interesting because in Polish, we have a very similar myth to the Little Mermaid called Rusalka, but a mermaid translates to Syrena/Syrenka (very close to Sirene). I decided to double check after that excerpt because, while Claire Hummel did state her costumes were supposed to be 'closer' to reality, not perfectly accurate, her placing Little Mermaid in 1840's Georgia was a "huh???" moment. It is simply not what she says in the description of the picture. She says the inspiration for the movie looks is scattered: there's a minor character with a Georgian set up, the slashed sleeves are present in many eras /including/ the 1840's. She simply made a choice to go with 1890's because of the leg-o-mutton sleeves. She doesn't even give a guess of when the movie is set. It irks me because they sourced her art but didn't even bother to read one tiny paragraph properly before they put words in her mouth, making her sound like a fool. What a shoddy work.
Some of these historically accurate videos are obviously not well researched but have then high production values (hiring models, lights, the shots) that it feels so frustrating. Talking about historical accuracy, have you watched Gentleman Jack? It features some solid 1830's fashion and it shows they were trying to be as true to the fashion as possible. (It's also a very good show). The intro theme shows the main character getting dressed and you can see her putting on a corset (over a shift!) and adding the busk to the front. Really recommend it!
I love the costumes and the costumimg featurettes on Outlander. they work so hard at being historically accurate and it's lovely!
Did you know that Gentleman Jack was a real person and that the story is based on her diaries, which she wrote in code? She wrote very explicitly about her sexual encounters and relationships with other women and was quite open about her homosexuality. She even got married to a woman (in church!) and they lived together as sort of husband and wife. Not sure if she was really a transgender male, but she was nicknamed "Gentleman Jack" because she wore male clothes and acted quite like a man. Very fascinating person either way and I'm glad their story is getting told! ^^

The same video that thought that The Little Mermaid was taking place I Georgia also discusses Frozen and tried to seem knowledgeable and mention some “special” clothing item names in Norwegian. They mention words like “strumpor” and “skjorta” and make them seem like they’re particular clothing items but turns out they’re literally just saying socks and shirt. Very researched lmao

It's especially hard to figure out what 'commoners' were wearing at the time, because usually only the rich or royal could afford to have paintings made. And even then it was such an occasion that they'd dress up up even fancier so they'd look as impressive as possible for future generations to see. And so these are the most commonly accessible reference pics. Highly staged and only showing the 1%.
It's like guessing an entire generation's fashion zeitgeist by one billionaire, instagrammer's pics.

Disney obviously take a lot of liberties and are influenced by the times that the films were actually made. Do they even attempt to get their films historically accurate? But the RUclips videos are another matter. "Let's explain inaccuracies with more inaccuracies..." 🤦♀️
One thing I think is cool about the history of animation is to see how the characters, regardless of setting, will always show some influence of the fashions of the time and place of their creation. Like how 80s anime characters have big 80s hair. Or how Cinderella clearly looks like she's going to a prom int he 1950s more than to a royal ball in the (unspecified time period) middle ages.

Disney cares more about designing a character that the audience will find pleasing. Which is a better route to go then trying to be historically accurate. Elsa's coronation dress isn't very accurate to what a real queen getting coronated would wear. The dress is far too simple. but its design is clearly symbolic in nature. It looks constricting and stiff because that's how Elsa feels. And that symbolism is more powerful than making something super historically accurate.

I'm pretty sure the photo drawn by Azalea's Dolls is actually something made on dollsdivine (a website that hosts dress up games). Azalea's Dolls is the artist and creator of the game used, but the picture shown is a creation by someone using the game. And yes, some people have made some insanely talented things with dollsdivine games (especially if there's a drag and drop section, you'd be amazed at the level of creativity and straight up artistry these people use) but that's still someone working within the parameters of a dress up game. It's a beautiful and well designed game, but it's not someone who set out to create a perfectly historically accurate version of the princess from scratch. WHAT I'M SAYING IS YOU'RE RIGHT and I'll be checking out Rachel Boyd's video asap

The only mention of Georgia in her original post is to say that the TIME period is hard to pin down in the movie because: "Grimsby's wearing a Georgian getup, Ariel's pink dress with the slashed sleeves subscribes to several eras from the Renaissance to the 1840s, and Eric is... Eric."
It was a reference to the Georgian PERIOD as evidenced by Grimsby's costume, and neither of the two locations called Georgia. Don't worry, she's well aware that it takes place in Denmark. That's just Buzzfeed for ya! XD

OMG I related so much when you were talking about how centuries are like, a lot of years, and a lot of stuff changes, and you can’t mash it all together. I’m currently working on a fashion timeline for the 17th and 18th century, and it’s crazy because styles change way faster than people think. Would you unironically wear 1990s clothing today? No, just like how a lady at the end of the 19th century wouldn’t dream of wearing a crinoline and as a mid-19th century lady would be very embarrassed by the thought of that sheer, 1820s nightgown look that their parents used to don.
The " dumbing it down for a wide audience" drives me inssaaaane. You can be accurate without talking for hours. It also reminds me of travesties like" Memoirs of a Geisha" that first off was totally fine with mashing every Asian nationality together as if they were the same, but also thought traditional Maiko and Geisha makeup was " too out there" for general audiences...despite it being one of the most iconic and easily recognized cultural looks since forever.
I don’t think the traditional geiko and maiko makeup and hair were too out there for the filmmakers, I think the just didn’t find the traditional look appealing enough. I vaguely recall them saying something about how the traditional hairstyles didn’t look good to them from certain angles and stuff like that. But I agree, the inaccuracies in that movie drove me insane too.
Especially since the "photo drawn by Azalea's Dolls" is probably what someone else made with the doll maker.
scarylion.roar Yeah, that's definitely an online doll maker. My little sister was obsessed with that particular one for a while. It's not even a Disney themed one, it's supposed to be modelled after the Tudor period.
I remember seeing Claire Hummel's art a few years ago. It's so good! It's actually well researched and pretty accurate, but apparently those videos couldn't even accurately describe them. 1840's? ... wow.

Omg thank you so much for actually crediting the artist amd also criticizing those who don't!! So many people don't just not ask for permission but then don't even mention the actual creator, which is especially horrible when they are professionals who make actual money off of it (they are literally making money from stolen artwork!) This is exactly the reason why I don't post my art online anymore.

I'm cracking up a little because Claire Hummel definitely didn't set her Ariel drawing in Georgia. She mentions that film version of The Little Mermaid is hard to place in terms of a timeline because everyone is wearing different styles. The inspiration for the look is 1890s Europe. I can't speak for the accuracy of the illustration, but idk how the video you sourced messed up that bad.
