Can you do how to tell the difference in fashion by the decades for the 18th century?
Bridgerton is totally a fanfic. They literally have the fake-relationship-trope in it
@Ruoshui Liu pardon?
Yes, I loved it. The pop song instrumental covers actually kinda worked. Like they took inspiration from the period and just made their own little world with it and it was never meant to be accurate, it was just a very trope-y show to enjoy and I think they made it work.
"Gross" is by far not strong enough in this case.
Anyway, has any of you read the books and can, thus tell me if this is how the books are written? Or were they written like real Regency and the tv series changed that?! Thanks in advance for the answer!
@@andis7187 I personally hated the music. Like they couldn't come up with something more creative, and just took modern pop songs and covered them in string quartet. There were even some shots of someone playing an instrument that was nowhere to be heard in the actual music. I don't know. It kind of infuriated me 😅. Glad others enjoyed it I guess.
@@yoyoheads same. The covers were awful.

Yep😂
Thats exactly it. Bridgerton is taking history as inspiration but has heavy fantasy. If it were accurate, most of the individuals who are not pale in complexion would never be in fancy dress or at any fancy event during that time.
Fr great
It is an alternate universe but that doesn't mean the costume design is beyond criticism. Karolina makes some very good points here. Specially because the whole vibe of the show is that it looks like a Jane Austen's fanfic, like regency era from a modern pov, so if you're whole aesthetic is going to be a fantasy, romanticized version of a particular historical period, it is to be at least expected that you're familiar with it enough at least

"it's not a historical romance, it's a historical fantasy" nail. on. head.
Netflix caters to a teenage audiences in terms of storytelling and romance, costumes and drama (which is not necessarily bad but I do find the dumbing down disingenuous to the teenage audience). Enola Holmes and now Bridgeton it seems a direct reflection of the influencers and tik tokers of today. Elite rich children living their lives unperturbed by the cares and worries of the world outside their class bubble and in Enolas case talking directly to us as RUclips influencers do in videos etc. Its actually smart marketing choice as a direct /familiar connection to today, back in the day these were the 'influencers' and kardashians of their times. Because I came to watch this show with this view in mind and I was not expecting masterful storytelling or accurate costumes, I was able to watch it all the way through like a soap opera with many a cringe moments 😬😅 I'm watching it for Nicola Coughlan who is in the amazing shoe Derry Girls! (Which is a period peice in itself-set in the 1990s). Look forward to see more interactions with Nicola and Claudia Jessie's character.
@@valeskacanas9187 Teenagers? Julia Quinn has a primarily older female audience. This show is not catered to teenagers, especially the fact there are so many very prolonged sex scenes. It's more like the Outlander demographic.

@@LittleHouseofGeeky opps merged two topics/ideas in one, was speaking more of netflix shows in general that cater to that audience or have character that are teenagers. I have not read Quinns works but have found out many have, from what I've seen of the Bridgeton netflix show I may have to disagree it being like Outlander in terms of narrative at least first few books of outlander (but maybe that's me being a snob or impolite, I'll take that on the chin, if that's the case), probably similar more in regards to the intimate scenes and prolonged takes. Yeah. Masterbation in general was a huge nono at that time. But female masterbation?? Absolutely not. If they could talk about female masterbation in that explicit detail in the show... The overboob thing drove me crazy too, but I wasn't sure how to fix it until you pointed it out here. I thought maybe the actresses all had small boobs or something, but now I realize it's because their dresses simply didn't fit. You know that scene where Daphne arrives at a ball and she's supposed to be all goddess-like to both ensnare the prince and make Simon jealous? I get that that was the aim, but I feel like it failed to deliver because I honestly felt like her mother looked better than her because her mother was wearing a gown that actually made her boobs look good while Daphne's chest was just... confused. There's a picture at 17:10 that sort of shows what I'm talking about.
I was thinking that maybe they did the overboob on purpose to make the actresses look younger. I feel like Marina for instance did not have one, and she’s depicted as a « woman » (having known Love, and the other obvious thing that I won’t spoil just in case) whereas Eloise, Penelope and Daphne are just « girls »
Were big boobs in trend at the time though?
@@roxy8456 Body types being in trend is a very modern thing. Back then it was your clothes, not your body, that made you fashionable. So it wasn't big boobs that were in fashion, it was a particular type of neckline where the boobs would be half exposed that was in trend. You can see it in the timestamp MeyaRose left - Daphne's boobs are fully covered (not in fashion), but her mom's in the background are half exposed (in fashion)
Right!! That dress is so.. Bleh... Looks like my first communion dress but with glitter 😅
Confused chest - I love that term XD
I believe from the story line and where they are taking her character at least Penelope's exclusively "overboob" bodices are made that way on purpose so that in the next series she will look older and more confident. I think it is most probably a set up to give her a cinderella moment later in the story. The designer clearly knows how to dress a curvier figure, look at her mother's dresses, she always looks amazing even through she does not have a slim, almost flat silhouette. Because we know they are using the colors to make a point why wouldn't they use the dress fit and shape also?
I think you are right! I like that idea
Yup.
In the books, Penelope's mother has zero understanding of Fashion and dresses her in yellow because it's a happy color, even though it is decidedly NOT a good color for her. She also pushed Penelope into society early in hopes that she'd make a good match quickly. So I think that's what the designer was going for with Mrs Featherington's weird too-slim gowns and Penelope's technicolor overboob dresses. Still doesn't explain Daphne's problem, though.
This series was the weirdest mix of 'pride and prejudice' and 'Gossip Girl' and i love it.
This is EXACTLY how I described it, word for word
Lol it was So historically inaccurate, but if you ignore the fact it was supposed to be a historical show and see it from a tv point of view it was nice to see a actors employed for their talents not colour.
Yes honest! Although it's not *really* fantasy there was totally a fantasy vibe throughout, I mean it's not trying to be historically accurate but more like a modern reimagining of the era, which is why I think the overall production design works even if it is inaccurate. That being said I love picking apart the historical inaccuracies for lols.
Well s**t, now you've sold me.
I loved Gossip Girl just for the clothes. Story lines? Who cares?
This is exactly how I described it to my cousins 🤣🤣
I loved how the show was already historically inacurate as hell so they just went all the way with it and had fun with the outfits. It definitely worked for this show
Me too
I mean it’s just a show
Well, I think "historical fantasy" is a good way to describe it 🤔
Reminds me of Asian “historical” shows. It’s mainly fantasy and exaggerated. I liked it. I hope it gets better in the next season though. Netflix gives bigger budgets to popular shows.
@Emmanuel Goldstein Bridgerton is based on adult romance novels, it was never meant for children, and no one is re-writing history for it.
I’m happy that people in that era didn’t actually have glitter or we’d still be finding it everywhere nowadays 😂
I love the Bridgerton style lol the only thing that throws me off is Lady Featherington's clothes. But, she's supposed to a fashion disaster and they designed her in a way that 21st century people can tell she isn't dressing properly lol
There was something about her silhouette that screamed at me, but I couldn't tell what it was! Of course, Penelope regularly commented on colours and later on, Madame Delacroix pointed out that she accomplished her dresses order because no one else would choose the fabric. 🤣

When I saw that corset scene I immediately thought "oh no, karolina isn't going to like this!"
Historical fantasy: BINGO. It's a stylized historical fantasy. Bridgerton was never pretending to be accurate, despite what people think
It’s like the Great but even more silly
I saw two videos talking about the disaster in the costumes, but it is supposed to be historically inaccurate.
I love the 3 book (and was the only that I read). But is clearly fantasy and if they adapt the 3 book, social class and rules goes down the drain.
Yes the stylist was even told “make the featheringtons as Gaudy as possible” as the costumes I think are a dramatized version of the character they belong to, which I LOVE (cause I like underlying meaning)
it's kind of funny when you go to videos like the Bridgerton trailer and how many people are complaining about how little historical accuracy there is in the show when it's abundantly clear that they never aimed for historical accuracy. Some people seem to think the producers didn't notice it wasn't accurate lol (not Karolina of course, just many of the commenters online)
I feel like the whole show is exaggerated to almost a parody so I see the extravagant costumes follow along the same lines. So it's kind of works for me??
Yeah like that is the whole point! There is NO historical accuracy and its kinda sad to see people not getting into it, the show obviously is having fun and vibing, there was even ariana grande playing at one of the balls, like c'on. We should treat this show like we treat medieval stories with a bunch of dragons! Just embrace the wacko concept and enjoy the ride, it's not a documentary.
I watched a costuber who is actually kinda positive about the costumes, she understands the fantasy/creative/storytelling element of the costumes plus her opinion bout the court costume is different from this vid, her vid says the royal court actually didn't like/follow the fashion trend at that time
Edit: the costuber i meant is Eternal Goddess go check her out 👍
Yes this!! Everything about the show is So Much that the ridiculous costumes support the absolute wild ride you're thrown on from the beginning. Apart from the "1813 London" at the beginning, the show barely makes any claim for actual historical accuracy, and things like Lady Featherington's wack dresses support Lady Featherington's wack personality
As someone who has read Julia Quinn and other Regency romances I put this show in almost an Alternate Universe of the Regency London that exists in Romance novels where they never wear bonnets, corsets get ripped off of bodices and class is never as important as love. Its a suspended disbelief thing but there were a few issues I still had even given that mindset with the costumes, in particular Lady Featherington and Pen Featherington
Its very similar to the idea of Reign, where the outfits are era adjacent, to try to make things more approachable to younger audiences!
Fun fact - in the books Mrs. Featherington’s character is supposed to be really bad at fashion trends. Dressing her youngest daughter in colours and shapes that didn’t flatter her. She forces her daughter to dress in yellow because it’s a “happy colour”.
i think the overboob part specifically on Pen was because she needed to look younger and more "innocent". apparently she's 34 in real life 😳

I don’t see why sooo many costume designers feel that period costumes need a ‘modern, contemporary twist’. It implies that modern audiences lack the insight to relate to and enjoy historical aesthetics as they were without them being made more ‘cool’ and ‘sexy’. Also if I wanted to see modern clothing I would just watch a modern movie. The reason many people watch historical dramas is to be transported to a different time/place.

@@zinmomo7192 I read the books, then I heard Shonda Rimes was going to produce the series. That was enough for me. Besides, I'm older and I'll leave historical romance fantasies to young women who still indulge in those.
"Respect the drip Karen" caught me off guard XD lmao
Spoiler: So for Queen Charlotte, the king has dementia, and when he is lucid, he still thinks hes several year back. We are given the impression that the queen and king dont get along, until the dr says that the king is lucid, and she rushes to him. Could the queen be wearing older styles to try to comfort the king when hes lucid and she never knows when that's going to be? I'm not sure how far behind the times the queens dresses are.
See the Haute LeMode channel for his review. He explains why the queen dresses one way and everyone else wears more modern dresses and silhouettes
This was my interpretation as well. The obviously 18th styles bothered me until I saw that scene.
In real life the queen actually stayed in the same fashion all the way through and that's why she is in a earlier fashion in the show as well (from an interview with the designer on Insta).
Love this view!
@I for in private and in portraits she did wear the modern style. But the dress protocol for public/court appearances was based on the older styles and even mandated panniers.
I was watching this and was so confused by the tiaras, feathers and silhouettes. Regency? Rococo? Edwardian? MAKE UP YOUR MIND COSTUMERS!!
Surprisingly, in the court scenes they got the feathers right! That's how they would have been put when creating a court/gala outfit.
Costumers: YES
I think it was very intentionally done to reflect different people because the silhouettes remain consistent as far as who wears what shape throughout
@@waterissogood It was! I see so many people saying that they were bothered by the inaccurate stuff but honestly it was just a light very fun show to watch. And as someone who has no knowledge about the accurate costumes stuff, I loved every part of the show.
LavenderWisteria
Regcocodian? Reedcoco? Rocoregened?
Can we also mention how after a death, I won't say who, THEY DIDN'T WEAR BLACK!!!!
It would be white, correct?
@@cremetangerine82 no, before the 19th century to signal mourning women wore black. It’s almost a rule.
@@theblackdaria_
Do you know when the tradition of wearing black for mourning started?
@@cremetangerine82 it was strictly a 19th century thing. It began during Queen Victoria’s reign after she mourned her husband Prince Albert
@@theblackdaria_ Black mourning clothes existed in Europe way before that, during the 16th century (around the 1500s), there was a French queen who also dressed all black to mourn her husband's death. She was Catherine de Medicis.
Wow!😃 She really knows her stuff. Whenever someone wants to make a show that includes historical clothing, they need to come to her. 👍🏾😺
While watching Bridgerton I literally googled "when were sequins invented" because I was distracted by the glitter lol
Bridgerton is to the Regency Period as A Knights Tale is to Medieval Period. A recreation of spirit, not of accuracy.
10000% agree
YESS!!!
This is the best comment so far.❤️
Such a good movie, I wish his smile didn’t make me sad now. It’s just too beautiful
Yes, I used exact comparison to explain Bridgerton to my friend who was out of the loop.
For me this was this kinda regency fantasy romance, so I didn't expect it to be acurate nor care that it wasn't.
"it's like mixing a magic potion"
Okay you cannot tell me that Karolina isn't an immortal witch who's lived through all the eras, seeing how fashion changes
Mother gothel who? I only know meme mom
My coworker suggested this to me as a "Historical Romance." Little did I know when I got home it was NOT what I expected. I agree on SOOOO many points and I wish everyone could watch this video OMG.
"Jane Austen fanfic"
as a wattpad and ao3 writer , it is actually very similar to the plot lines lmao
Srsly the best description. It was honestly so impressive to watch them fit in so many different popular tropes.
I mean, she was the first regency romance writer. Some even credit her with the creation of the genre.
The Colors were honestly my favorite part. We see those neutrals and creams and faded colors too much and I was so pleased that the designer for Bridgerton used color!! I know it wasn’t accurate and my ribs and boobs definitely hurt when I saw those stays being worn without Chemises (the chafing *shudder*) but I thoroughly enjoyed the fun aspect of it all. Not too mention from a pure construction point Queen Charlottes wigs are fantastic. They’re their own characters 😂
I LOVED her wigs lol. Sure, they’re not historically accurate but I think the SPIRIT is accurate. “Rich aristocracy utterly bored by social norms, does ridiculous shit to try and have some fun and no one is allowed to call her on it”. It all checks out.
My biggest issue of color was with the actors.
@@brofistingfister2747 are you actually fucking serious right now
Brofisting Fister bruh. They literally had an in universe explanation for that. The only reason you have a problem is because you’re racist.
@@brofistingfister2747 begone Troll, you have no power here.
I learned a lot while watching this video- thank you! The costumes were driving me bonkers while watching this show, and I am glad to see I was not alone in that. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise!
I love that you get into all of the details of historically accurate clothing. I love historical fashion so these videos are awesome!
The “I should have you whipped tho” part had me crying 😭
Haha me too!
I definitely gasped at the ridiculous corset scene at the beginning and thought immediately that Karolina would have.. words
My husband had to calm me down from ranting at the television
I think they wanted a Scarlet O'Hara corset moment.
I really enjoyed watching this! Your tone and delivery is perfect - especially the unimpressed “thanks for watching” at the end 🤣
This is one of the most interesting channels I've found in recent memory. You make such good videos. Your depth of knowledge on the subject matter blows my mind every time. And on top of that, the videos are funny. Thank you so much for your work. What an amazing time to be alive
To me it was more fantasy than historically accurate. I couldn't imagine such wealth (even though they had so much money) being feasible at the time.
Most of the wealth came from the slave trade.
@@Italiana911 yes but they weren’t that wealthy at the time. To me it was a modern era theme taken to the past so the theme made more sense. The sister of the main character had a horrible posture not acceptable for the era. I get she’s tomboyish but the posture was a no no.
I'm pretty sure it was a historical fantasy or smthing
@@debra1663 even if it was u atleast gotta get two key concepts right. Mannerisms and clothings right. The clothing was way off from original. Remember they did it based on one time period.
@@carmencapa6945 yeah true , sorry
I was under the impression that it wasn’t supposed to be historically accurate.
Yeah I’m pretty sure you can figure that out within five minutes given the costuming, casting, dialogue... it was fun anyway though
@Charisma Girl She knows that it's a real time period, she just doesn't care. All she wants to do is to create a fantasist show.
@Charisma Girl Yeah, exactly, she's open that it's a fantasist show. She doesn't lie, she's honest.
@Charisma Girl Bridgerton is set in an alternate reality. It's not trying to be real history, it is a fantasy story.
And no, it is not cultural appropriation. Anyone can wear dresses from different time periods in history.
@Charisma Girl chill
I just wanted to say that your style is so gorgeous!!! your hair is amazing. Love it!
I've been calling it Gossip Girl meets Jane Austen (and I haven't even seen it)
Even though the costumes weren’t historically accurate, I do give the designers credit. I think they did a really great job reflecting each character through their wardrobe.
I think the dresses r beautiful too but it’s not historically accurate. Some of characters has mannerism that weren’t acceptable of the time period. Wat personally bugged me was the POSTURE of some characters. If ur gonna do a old age move u better be accurate about the dress and mannerisms (Posture) of problem of the time period. Or atleast not deviate too much from the dresses of the time period which failed to do
I agree. I knew they weren't too accurate but I feel like they wanted to have fun with the costumes and I believe they did and it showed. I quite enjoyed the costumes.
@@carmencapa6945 You really gonna complain about historical accuracy in a series that literally features people of color as nobility? It's not meant to be historically accurate. If they were going for that, they wouldn't have been playing Ariana Grande's song at balls. I don't understand why people want historical accuracy in fictional works. If you wanted historical accuracy, go watch a documentary or something.
@@333pinkelephant333 the dresses and postures r a must even in historic fiction. Or else don’t claim it’s from a time period but just say it is a fantasy movie inspired by historic dresses. The black people, They r people. I couldn’t care less that that part about history is not accurate wat I do care is the costumes and posture (mannerisms). IT’S NOT ABOUT WHO PLAYS WHO. It’s about the accuracy or attempt of such in dresses and mannerism these characters portray. The way they portray “oh racism is this easy to rid” is for another complain I have but nonetheless I think they shouldn’t have mentioned their color and went with “it’s the way it is”.
except featherington. yeah, it was really obviously not attempting historical accuracy, it was playful. and i really loved some of the queens hairdos, because they played with the texture of african hair in a regency era, it was wild and fun!
i just wish it hadn't gone full porn, cause i was watching it with my mom...
Found my husband, who usually watches only action/bollywood movies, watching Bridgerton alone in the living room. He looked confused.
Lol
Probably wondering why they made White characters black... despite it meaning unnecessary and ahistorical.
@@brofistingfister2747 It's a historical FANTASY, bro. EVERYTHING is ahistorical in it!
And it is absolutely not unnecessary, because people of colour want to see themselves in Regency pieces too, and not just as servants and slaves.
I love the mental image this gave me.
@Warned Storm plus, it opens up more casting choices. Simon and Lady Danbury were well cast.
Please do one of those for the series "Dark". They have a lot of different decades and even centuries going on, so it would be an interesting analysis.
I just watched the first episode, and literally was in shock at the messy costuming! I was saying almost the same thing as you in regards to the fabric and jewelry looking like a High School play production and the concept being from a 12th grade fanfic.
So I watched the entire series and it seems the costumes got much better and I ended up liking the series! The production and sets were really beautiful. I enjoyed the story and the duke has now replaced Jamie Frasier as sexiest fictional male character in a period drama!( I never thought that could happen but it did)
I thought that the Featheringtons were supposed to be horribly out-of-fashion, so I took the corset, bright colors, wrong silhouettes, etc. as a purposeful (albeit fantasy-esque) reflection of that
yeah if I remember correctly in the book for Pen and Colin she has a glow up and doesn't follow her mom's fashion. she stopped wearing yellow because it clashed with her hair
Yeah it was entirely the point. They (especially mama f) are a very gauche family, who don't really get it. Pen comes into her own as she ages and leaves the tacky behind.
I also thought the corset scene was about the mum being cruel and meant to be unfashionable and atypical
Yes, if you are viewing the show as pure fantasy, the Feathertons' clothing does reinforce the plot point that they are are a garish family. However for me it was still very off-putting because in 1813 they literally didn't have the technology to create the colors and patterns that are worn by the Featheringtons. And while I understand that the show is set in an alternate timeline fantasy version of 1813 London that is socially more advanced than it actually was, they give no indication that their setting is technologically more advanced.
@@jenniferskinner2843 I agree with that, some of the more plastic-looking pieces pulled me out of it. But I don’t mind the idea of what the costumer was going for
I think it's not "our timeline". The same that Game of Thrones isn't our medieval period, but has a very medieval feeling.
That’s how I look at fictional fantasy things like this. Has touchstones in our reality but it’s a parallel dimension haha.
yes but if it comes to Game of Thrones it is obvious it takes place in other world and timeline and in Bridgertons it is said that it takes place in London in 1814(?) so well... it is nothing to compare. It would be okay if Bridgertons was in another universe but it is in our world. That makes it disappointing.
@@leucantheum8682 It has black queen. Did we have black queen in our timeline? We did not. It's obviously not our timeline. It is closer to us than Game of Thrones but it's not us.
Yes exactly. It is not our timeline then why they insinuated the year at the beginning of the show? It is just pointless. I know it is a completely fantasy series then I dont like they want to pretend it happens in 1813.
I just wanted to show my point, Game of Thrones does not have this issue because there no one tries to tell us that this is our world.
@@leucantheum8682 But they're very clearly telling that this is not our world. But it is close to our world. And the year is mentioned like once.

Ohh wow thank you for sharing your knowledge and also including reference images!! Bridgerton fashion really did look weird since the beginning of the series... But you summed it up pretty well: historical fantasy 🙌🏻
Omg please do a whole video on Reign costumes!! I used to love it and seeing that picture just opened my eyes
It does read/feel like fanfic, specially for the "enemies to lovers/fake pretend realtionship trope"
It definitely feels like a fanfiction but in a good way
It was based on a series of romance novels! So basically
Most romances Netflix has presented on the last 2 years or so look like fanfic! Think of the kissing booth and to all the boys i've loved before 😅
But I can't deny my love for Bridgerton
I find this line of critique rather myopic, these types of storylines originated in romance novels not fanfic culture. But modern young women are significantly more likely to have read reams of free fanfic instead of having read romance novels (which you’d either need to spend money for or visit the library for, much less convenient), so they are more likely to interpret romance entertainment through the lens of fanfic.
but the thing is enemies to lovers or fake dating trope didn't originate in fanfiction... they originated in romance novels
