Hello mother, also thank you but I prefer sewing

Wasn't that what they did in the last Little Women film? 🥲

If you've watched reign, you already have seen costumes from wish in a period drama.
@@vayaavramova that's the one I was trying to think of! Full blown Ali express fantasy!
The big problem with Wish and other similar retailers like Shein is that they steal images and creations from real creators and designers then make them as cheaply as possible, trying to mimic the design, for a fraction of the price - that's why some of the items don't look like the pictures.
With wish, sure, but with Shein you do actually get what's on the picture. Low quality? Yes. Needs ironing before it looks like the photo? Sure. But at least they really are the actual clothes, which is probably why Shein is so damn popular. 🤷
that's exactly what happened to Bernadette's dress right
@SingenStatt Atmen
Shein steals designs tho. There have been a whole lot of cases where small designers found their items sold on there and couldn’t do anything. They didn’t even get money, just coupons when they contacted Shein.
I learned that almost every time when a "model's" face has only the top part cut out it usually is the case. Because if they tried to cut the head entirely the picture would look weird and not pleasing at all (it usually falls into the uncanny valley for some reason, when you feel that something is off with that picture).
So what I tell people that buy clothes online, specially historical, is never buy from sellers that have pictures with just the top of the head of the person on the photo cut out. And also, if you can, try to find the person whose photo it is and let them know, because maybe they'll want to take action against that.
@@unhappyoption5910 Ah yes I can absolutely see that happening and it sucks (one of the many things that suck about fast fashion). All I meant to say is, at least they're not a complete scam: They do actually make (or rather mass-produce) the clothes, have models wear them and take their pics and then sell them. So they don't straight out lie to their buyers like many others.
Doesn't free them from doing a whole lot of shady shit, of course, and stealing other people's designs is surely just the tip of the iceberg.
So many of the product photos just screamed "stolen etsy product photo" recreated as cheaply as possible. I'm reminded of Bernadette Banner's classic "buying my own dress" or whatever it was called
I remember that one. She really nailed it
Yeah...if they have the face cropped out of the picture, it's probably stolen
That's what most stuff on wish is, especially the clothing. Don't ever order from wish expecting anything other than cheaply made junk that looks absolutely nothing like the photos.
Me too!
Every single thing on wish basically takes an existing product photo from another listing, and then they make the knock-off based off the photo.
As a little "Tip" for people, who don't have enough money: When we were in University and utterly poor , we went to flea markets and got everything in fabric we possibly could found. Like old lace tablecloth and used this for sewing or gave it to friends who could sew. That works quite fine :-)
There's a big Methodist church near me that has a huge rummage sale every summer. When I was doing a lot of costuming I'd go to their dollar-a-bag day and load up on linens. I remember once I dressed the whole female chorus of a production of Ruddigore for $5.00 that way. I called hem "The Bad Bedsheet Bridesmaids of Ruddigore."
Bless my friends who keep showing up with donation bags at churches and cheap at flea markets, they keep me going ❤

one of the first things I read about cosplay online was when the LOTR movies came out and I wanted to be an elf and the page I was looking at said something that applies to so many things in life-- you can have it cheap, you can have it good, or you can have it quick-- pick two, but you can't have all three. If you want to make costumes that are good and cheap, you're going to have to dedicate a lot of time to trying to source fabrics secondhand, do a lot of hunting, experimenting with your own patterns if you can't afford to buy them, doing a lot of research before you buy things. It's possible! But like they elf cosplay page said, you cant have all three.
This is definitely accurate
I love this quote. I have a poster in my atelier wall with a triangle with "Cheap", "Fast" and "Good" in its points and the phrase: "Pick two" on top. Because you will not believe the amount of costuming clients that believe they can get all 3. Usually the less experienced ones.
Thrift stores & rummage sales are your friends for cheap decent material
Karolina trying the items on…the ripping of the dress…the priest vibe…I die😂😂😂😂
I love that website!
Professor Snape's will was to give Karolina his only wizarding robes, which was so conveniently sold on wish exactly the one time Karolina was shopping on there. Magic!
A thing I learned from that Bernadette Banner's video is that a lot of times when this listings show "models" with the top half of their face cut out it is usually because that photo is stolen from the social media of someone that is actually a reenactmentor or a recreator (aka someone that actually has our hobby and did that dress just for themselves only to have their creation stolen by this companies). They cut their faces in weird ways because of they tried cutting their heads entirely the picture would be weird.
So beware of any page that has pictures like that. And if you find one, maybe try finder the person that had their photo stolen to let them know, because only they can contact the platform on which the sale is being made to remove their photo so the company stops this false advertisement .
Yep, I was just thinking how that robe a la francaise looked like it was ripped right out of some cosplayers instagram.
Im surprised there hasn't been any laws put into place to prevent straight up scammers like Wish from false advertisers
This is good to remember with basically any fast fashion site--a lot of modern clothes advertised with the model's head missing are cheap recreations approximating the photo stolen from other stores...
I loved how Bernadette Banner went to explaining everything so perfectly.
Yep. I caught someone on Pinterest using stolen Morgan Donner footage to sell their darning loom. I let her know via Facebook and she said there was nothing she could do about it. It sucks when you share things and someone tries to make money off your work.
“ It’s an expensive hobby “ I can relate to that as an equestrian, horses are just expensive, domesticated lawn mowers.
My MIL is an equestrian and I'm shocked how fragile horses are. Huge delicate fragile vet bills. Idk how they survive in the wild
@@tristantries9211 it’s definitely because horses in stables are domesticated and aren’t used to living in the wild or defending themselves ( of course domesticated horses have their fight or flight and can protect themselves it’s just now they don’t have to because they aren’t in the wild ). The red "Victorian Set" is the pattern Simplicity 2207, and is part of their old Steampunk line. I made one of my very favorite skirts out of it years ago (giving it pockets of course). So like, at least kudos to them for it being a good version of that pattern?? Except idk why they would make it so short, I'm 5'10" and mine is floor length without adding too much too it???
A lot of this has to do with the fit of the “average joe” measurements. Bcs such a large percentage of the products are fast fashion made for and by the Chinese market, this ends up affecting the length of skirts and trousers the most.
She’s 6.3
I'd love to see what Steampunk costumes were like if they were more historically accurate.
it's so sad to think about all the fashion and textile related waste that's happening because companies like this are underworking and overworking people to produce absolute crap that's meant to be thrown away as soon as it's out of the packet. imagine if we dedicated all that energy to making good things to last that could be reused and recycled.
but i am feeling you about the colour of the final dress, it was very pretty.
Exactly. But these companies will continue to exist as long as there's people willing to buy.
@@eloschk And people are going to buy more and more when they see people monetizing off of videos where they review them. It's strange to me how as a fashion historian this woman would jump on such a lame trend that promotes fashion waste.
@@sophiaboli8517 i thought she was truly hoping to find a hidden gem because she gets so many "where to purchase on a budget" questions. but alas.
@@eloschk Hopefully the more people we educate, the less people will buy this stuff! Even though there is more awareness around the waste produced and the exploitation of workers within the fashion industry, there are still so many folks who don't realize just how bad it is. If enough of us say "no, we aren't supporting this anymore", we (our money) have the power to change things.
Except at this point you are buying trash. What if I told you every company does this. From cooking pots to waching machine and boots. I bought pair of sneakers and they already have a torn heel and the insole soleside ( one against foot ) material is peeling off with some kind of slimy glue. And price was high enough I could porbably comission leather ones from someone, or at very least I could now if I have to buy new pair. And I didn't use them for a year yet.

Honestly, buying clothes on wish is SUCH a big gamble. Apart from the questionable fabrics, probably toxic materials, and the fact that they use images that they stole from other people (Like what happened with Bernadette Banner's medieval dress) Sometimes the clothes don't even arrive, and it turns out to be one big scam.
Thought you were going to say slave labor
@@jessleighton3795 YIKES. Had no idea that was on their list, too. Just when you think wish couldn't get worse, it does.
Basically ANYTHING from China is made using slave labor. Look how most of them live over there. Now look at all the labels of the stuff around your house. Then throw everything out with made in China on it. What do you have left and what do you replace it with? 🍀
Yeah, also if you have to get anything on wish,(because of price or whatever) ONLY buy stuff with pictures in THE REVIEWS!!! The review sample size and the pictures of the ACTUAL product, are the only safe metric.
The fabrics ALL remind me of this crap bridesmaid dress I had to wear once. The fact that it was neon purple aside, the fabric was SO SHINY, like cling wrap. ("And the best part is you can wear it again!") I couldn't believe how her pink dress RIPPED IMMEDIATELY though!!!
This video actually made me feel sad. I just kept wondering about who was sewing those dresses, what conditions they were working under and how much -- or should I say little -- they were being paid. Anyone who sews knows what hard work it is to sew anything -- even the stuff that doesn't turn out exactly as we hoped it would. I'm sure whoever worked on these clothes was just doing their best with the materials given and the time allowed.

Or was it machine manufacturing? What do u think?
@@WhisperingEcho33 there’s no such thing as machine manufacturing as you’re thinking of it. It has to be sewn together by people.
@@jiggly-puffy I know people are involved in it, obviously it's not only solo machines but I highly doubt wish has people hand sowing this stuff... or maybe I'm wrong? Idk. I just didn't know if it was b/c u see online how China mass produces like 100s of shirts in one sitting by a guy cutting a bunch stacked up. Ya kno?
I think they are too busy starving and suffering from health conditions to care what people think about the products of their slave labor.
I actually have the green Victorian dress but in red, and honestly it's not that bad once it's pressed and if it's the right size. It needed a bit of tinkering - I darted the bodice, took off the weird floppy shoulder bows and took up the underlayer of the skirt as it was too long, but with a crinoline and corset under it worked reasonably well - I wore it to a gothic event and got loads of compliments on it. For the ~£30 I spent on it, it was worth it.
I once had to call a neighbor to help me out of a dress I had made years earlier. Thought I'd see if it still fit. It didn't. I was stuck half in and half out.
That happened to me backstage once when I had to change out of a big heavy gown between acts - I had three men behind me working at the zipper with pliers and 3-in-1 oil.
I would love to see a video where she fixes one of the dresses. Anyone else?
Definitely ! The red and green ones could potentially be recut into something half-decent.
Yes
Besides people making fun of the dresses, who on earth would pay for that? Wrapping yourself in a plastic bag would have the same results but at a lower price 😂
I recall Debbie Harry going on Top of the Pops to sing Blondies latest single in the late 70s. Literally black bin liners and safety pins. She also made it look good on her. That kind of historic dressing we can all afford.
Well, every modern clothing that is NOT made of natural fibers is the very same plastic bag. It was just treated with more chemicals and longer, to soften them up more, before they sell it at fast fashion stores.
Ngl, i got my fair share of that garbage back in the days, and then i developed several contact allergies and now if any of this even touches my skin for longer than 30 seconds and i have to get another cortisone treatment.

Wish operation as follows:
- Find a single beautiful photo from a real creator (who probably spent hundreds of hours and lots of money of said project).
- Steal it.
- Wait for an order.
- Hurriedly throw together a rough lookalike with no understanding/underpinnings/time/fabric/money and send it on.
- Profit.
I just feel sorry for the poor workers who are made to construct clothing (based on as little as one picture), with no time and are probably paid nearly nothing for it.

@Victoria West I'm not sure, I've not attempted to purchase anything from Wish (or equivalent website) so I have yet to be in a personal situation where I have had a moral obligation to track down the original creator to inform them: I have simply seen several creators talk about this issue. I guess I would search for descriptive details of the item on social media and see if I get lucky?
@Victoria West Reverse image search would be my starting point.
@Victoria West I would probably look on instagram for costumers of the style era in question, a lot of these scam sellers steal photos from there day in day out. Same goes for etsy, where I would search for the same keywords + filter for handmade

the best thing i found for starting out is getting thrifted clothes that sort of fit the style of ones you want, and use them to get the vibe of whatever the inspiration is, i did that with a grey skirt and a puff sleeve white top with a lace detail for a sort of edwardian looking outfit. not perfect or accurate by any means but its great for when you're just starting. you can also alter clothes or add some little things to make them work better for whatever you're going for
Yes! White lace blouse with ruffles, next week you find a white skirt, put it underneath a layer made from satin, add a thrifted brooch that you glue onto a necklace etc. And done.
Living Anachronism has some suggestions for LARP/historically inspired/ren fair outfits for almost no money, based on existing clothes or simple alterations.
using thrifty sheets and curtains for basic shapes that don't require a pattern allows you to develop your sewing skills too. Medieaval peasant or Viking are pretty straightforward. 17th and 18th century Court gowns not so much.
Of course, ancient Greek and Roman clothes were as simple as the sari plus pins and knots. Some of those we still see on the beach.
@@michellebyrom6551 True, viking dresses and tunics are rectangles and triangles, nothing simpler than that. Early medieval vikings though, that one 12th century dress recreation is a monster. And well, then there are other things like embroidery, tablet woven treams and belts and holders, brooches, necklaces, etc (those can be cheap too, if you don't care for anything even resembling historical accuracy. Depends on where and when you wanna wear it, i guess).
What I've done for about every Halloween costume I've ever worn
I actually have a dress like this that i bought from China. I didn't have high hopes but it was cheap, but when it arrived it was beautiful! Obviously there's better dresses out there but I'm really happy with my dress and it's perfect for me since I'm a beginner at historic dresses.
There's a large playhouse near me that sells some of their old costumes. They usually have some cool inexpensive pieces. I think most people in town don't know about it. If people on here are looking, you should check larger playhouses. I also got an extremely nice corset for cheap once. It was a while ago, but I want to say it was around $100. Maybe $75. I think the person who ordered it never paid for it or picked it up. They also had a few other items in their "clearance" section.

10:05: Karolina Żebrowska's attempt to ripping4fun :)
Say it with me people, if it is cheap, someone didn't get paid!
Yes the material is cheap but also the people making it didn't get a proper pay or were not payed at all (look up the wage theft in the fashion industry that happened during the pandemic years). Fast fashion companies cut corners everywhere they possibly can to make things as cheaply as possible and that includes safe work environment for the workers and a decent, liviving pay.
Make informed decisions when you shop. Nothing is disposable. Not everyone can afford to buy fairtrade all the time (myself included) but be mindful when you're browsing sites like Shein and Zaful, Zara, H&M ect and ask yourself, do I really need it? is this really worth it?
i was really expecting this to be addressed at some point in the video but nope just "this is really poorly done" and no exploration into the reasons WHY. really didn't sit right with me tbh.
Totally agree with you. as I wrote in an other comment : Yes, I feel this video completly missed the ethical factor of the phenomenon. @16:25 : "why am I complaining about my own sewing skills when this is so badly done". --- Well, because the person who made this is not a pro seamstress. they are a poor exploited factory worker...
Okay but can 128$ actually be considered cheap?
@@bialynia for what it was advertising itself to be? absolutely. and honestly for the amount of labor that went into what was actually delivered? still cheap tbh.
@@victoriaz14 Yes, for what it was advertising itself to be it would be very cheap. But for what it was? Do you really feel that it's understandable for 128$ dress to rip open just because someone stretched in it? Not the seam opening but actually ripping?
I'd love to see how they look after you alter them! It would also be cool if you did a video about how to upgrade the accuracy of cheap costumes in 2 ways- for someone who has good sewing skills and for someone who does not.
I would like to see you review Historical Emporium. Their stuff is higher priced, and natural fabrics are used for some. But other items look off, and some are made of synthetics that would not have been used at the period the clothes are supposed to be for.
Rule 1 on wish: Items never look like in the pictures.
Rule 2 on wish: It's a guess yes or no if your items will even deliver.
Same is true regarding Wish kitchen gadgets, right down to the stolen images.
Proof that Karolina looks great in anything, even a literal plastic bag ✨
thank for an unexpected fit of laughter i got when you walked out with that 18th century gown!
cinderella, girl, you need to get yourself another fairy godmother.
forget being a princess, girl you’re the incredible hulk.
in pink.
You have me in tears! I'm glad you had fun with this!
“Because this thing is supposed to be filled with boobs, but it’s not”
Why is no one talking about that stellar line
padded push up ?
Because it's not good form to zing people about own goals.
I love her being mad that the dress is ripping so she kept ripping it more, respect
Waitttt The red dress with the cape look is literally stunning 😍
I would loooove to see a reworking video of these dresses, partly so they don't go completely to waste but also I liked the ideas you had with the last one!
would you consider making a video where you attempt to alter these cheap dresses? I'd be interested to see what could be done to them (probably have to change the era for all of them haha)
Maybe add deep lace to the skirt bottoms?
OMG I saw you walking in with the black "victorian gown" and I thought "this is what the priest of my church looked like last Sunday" and one second later you said "I look like a catholic priest" and I'm literally dying now
Edit: oh and yeah this is totally a look for AVPM Snape.
This video is pure gold
This video is amazing ! Literally laughing out loud. Your the best Karolina thank you for all the great content 💜
OMG!! Literally LOL. You’re a comedic genius. Love your videos. You’re simply amazing.
Karolina: hits a pile of clothes on the bed
Me: lord, if the cat is still there?
Karolina: hits another time
Me: hope, it’s not
Me, too!
Yep!!
I can't believe, that she didn't show us her cat. Just saying it's there 😻😢
This was my immediate thought!
I stopped the video right after that to look for a comment related to it bc 😟😂
I swear these wish descriptions is me trying to reach the word count on every essay I had to make
😂😂
karolina being surprised when she starts ripping the pink dress, then continuing to be surprised as she tears it apart is exactly what the doctor ordered
The fact that the "18th century gown" was so big on her and STILL ripped? What the heck?
You can use cheaper fabric, but you must have great skills. Micarah Tewers does amazing things from cheap materials, but she's amazing seamstress and crafter
I totally LOVED the red dress - and the green and black could be a fun dress - BUT the pink dress that ripped NEEDS to be either sent back or made a formal complaint about. Its "not fit for purpose" - ie - its not possible to wear it and move about it it. Very cool idea for a video and really fun! Thankyou!
Thats never going to happen. Its wish lol.
It all needs to be sent back. Cause she ordered dresses. She received plastic garbage, and it's not unlikely that they wouldn't have had passed the custom service contamination test, if they'd have tried it. I know at least that german customs would have had destroyed it, for several reasons.
@@olgahein4384 its not a problem for customs. Dont you know what wish is?! Ofc they were going to be plastic crap.
@@raquelnunes9793 I live in Germany, where everyone knows what Wish is. We have memes about Wish. We use 'ordered from Wish' in our everyday speech to describe something that is an atrocious joke of a cheap imitation beyond ridiculous. I just added my personal experience with customs in my country when it comes to things ordered from Wish, there's always a high risk that you won't be able to receive it from them, for fabric stuff it's often enough cause they have too many damaging chemicals in them.
The red looked amazing from a distance. Especially with the “cape”. I’m also thinking Karolina is a bit taller than they make clothes for, but someone shorter would be pretty ok. On the other hand it was expensive for the quality of work and for the fabric. Might be better off making something like it myself in a better quality fabric.
"this one looks atrocious, so of course I'm going to get it" well that's the biggest mood ever
3:05 me when i go in my search history
My favourite "dress" was the talar aka Snape`s coat, that was supposed to be an Edwardian gown. By the way: Has anybody said wish, that the Edwardian era was not in the middle ages?
And I love your description of the red one as an victorian lobster. This is hilarious.
at first when she slapped the clothes on the bed and and went "ooOOOOHH!" i thought she realized her cat was still somewhere underneath it lmao
I'm not going to lie, I am slightly suspicious that the black "victorian dress" is just dropshipped from a cheap religous clothing supplier.
Acabo de encontrar tu canal, me gustó mucho la forma tan natural y divertida en que hablabas de los diferentes atuendos, nueva suscriptora ♡
Next theme party I'm organizing will be: terrible historical costuming. Seems like fun.
I'll keep all candles and open flame far away from the party though... 0_0
Natural fibers are more dangerous to get around fire. Polyester will just melt, it's not likely to take on the fire, unlike cotton for example.
@@boreum789 Have you ever held a piece of polyester next to a flame? Because once it catches it goes up in seconds and will indeed melt. And in melting it will almost fuse with your skin creating some of the worst burns that are very hard to clean. (And cleaning burns is essential because the are notoriously quick to get infected.)
Cotton (or cellulose in general) will indeed go up in flame fairly quickly, that is true, and it will burn more like a candle. But it doesn't melt to skin, making it a tad more safe. Wool is even harder to set on fire, often creating a smolder that's easy to end.
Look, it's generally best not to set you clothes on fire as you wear them, no matter what they are made from. That's just uncomfortable. But if I had to chose I'd put synthetics last always.
Thank you, this was very interesting.
My mother considered sewing some of our clothes a few years back. It turned out that it cost far more than actually buying. Not even counting her unpaid work-hours. Pity, she liked it as a hobby but it was simply not cost effective.
I do a lot of sewing because I'm oddly-proportioned and have a terrible time finding off-the-rack clothes that fit. And yes, it can be horribly expensive, especially if you like nice fabrics in natural fibers. But I can afford the occasional new "luxury" fabric by buying about 90% of my fabric secondhand, be it in the form of unused yardage, curtains, tablecloths, bedsheets, blankets, duvet covers, or even existing garments. I buy thread, sewing machine needles, notions, and other sewing supplies the same way. It does take time, however, to find all of this stuff cheaply, which is another resource I know is in short supply for a lot of people.
It depends. Making things like men's boxers, denim jeans are NOT worth it. High skill set, complicated sewing, yardage cost, time consuming, etc.
But if you find the right site to get fabric, or buy second hand/discounted it can be VERY worth it. I just made myself a linen wrap skirt for what amounted to $15 in yardage (I bought on sale + a discount lol), which would go for around $60 handmade on etsy, for 1.5 hrs of labor. I used to make undergarments and that was very worth it as well for me.
When I was first started sewing is a WHOLE other story though, I bought nice fabrics and completely, unsalvageabley ruined everything I made... haha....
It was less expensive to sew, knit and crochet own clothes, some decades ago. Can't even find fabric shops in English now.
I saw because I like it and it gives me chance to get something which is according to my taste.
As @Harmless Weirdo wrote - second hand shops are your best friend.
Finnish recycling center (place where people bring things which still could be useful) often has coupons of brand new fabrics for 5€/kg
True but with the ugly clothes in shops these days, you might as well sew even if it's more expensive. At least one can make something to one's own taste.
loved the video!! by the way your outfit in the beginning of the video is so so cute
I am having so much fun watching this! Thanks for making my day karolina! 😁😁😁
Lessons learned - don't buy from wish, also, the bed belongs to Filemon
It's an expensive hobby but thank God for shitty 80s curtains and table clothes so many things I've made from those 😂
omg a video with you remaking these items to be more period-accurate would be SO fun
This was amazing content. Thank you so much for your sacrifices.
I laughed so hard at all of Karolina’s swishing sounds in those synthetic materials - meaning you could literally hear how cheap those clothes were…
1:48 these dresses look EXACTLY like they would be worn by the evil stepmother in a 2000s Barbie movie
I think the best way to make wearing historical clothing slightly less expensive is learning to sew it (& other garment-making methods). But that will take a massive amount of time if you want to make it look right, it's not like sewing a jersey dress from a pattern. It's the usual "cheap, fast & good quality - pick 2!" deal except even if you pay a lot for good quality it's going to take some time, and even if you take all the time you need to make a good quality item yourself it's not going to be cheap because you need wool or silk or linen, not polyester, and if you buy something cheap-ish that you at least hope will show up in the mail soon, it might be literally unwearable
1. Hands down the best vid of yours I've seen.
2. I thought thr maid outfit gave off Snape vibes. Then you said it and that was satisfaction.
