Great video analysis! I only have one gripe, all of these tracks are really old. (8-10 years or so?) In the time we came up everything was very new so we had really no examples, the only way to figure things out was to experiment. I agree the levels look crazy on these old tracks, you should always try to aim for a much fuller mix! I've learned everything I know from failing first, through an extensive process of elimination. You have to live and learn, most importantly just keep at it! Keep up the good work!
Yessirrr no amount of research replaces the grind, trial and error, failing and learning of it all. But with that being said, yeah this was a GREAT breakdown and extremely helpful for people who are learning. So much knowledge here.
Came back to this for inspiration. Vybe stated in a recent interview that Johnny gave him kick and 808 mixer templates back in 07 that he still uses to this day. When you gonna bless us Johnny? Lol
Woke up from an afternoon nap to your video MG. I agree, Juliano’s mixing techniques are pure wizardry, some may say borderline sorcery. IMHO, he’s the original Harry Potter. One of the best from the SoundClick era to ever do it. Thank you so much for your effort and insight MG. Greatly appreciated as always bro. @JohnnyJuliano, please return to RUclips!!!
Yeah I keep it simple myself my basic starting point kick/Sub at -8 then everything else gets mixed under that about -10/-12. Then everything gets boosted on my master with softubes Drawmer and Ableton effects
This is one of the best breakdowns that I have seen in a long time. I have always wondered how Johnny Juliano got his mixes to be so crisp. Thank you for breaking this down it’s going to help out a lot with my approach to my mixes
Dope tutorial. I like that this highlights that mixing is very much so a part of the art form and there are many many ways to mix and not 1 correct way.
Agreed! The trick is knowing what tools to use and how to use them to achieve the sound you want. Kinda like how an artist knows what type of materials to use, or a photographer knows what lenses and filters to use. There's corrective engineering and creative engineering too.
Revisiting this again. But another thing that struck me is they may have been doing limiting separately on a instrument bus. The transients dont seem to be rounding off or look like a limiter is hitting them at all on some of these, kind of like a stem mastering approach/template. Dam a part 2 on the soundclick era mixing would be cool. I miss that sound.
This was a really good breakdown! In general, when you do a modest (loose) mix, you can freak the mastering chain, i.e. a nice clean compression with a ratio between 2:1 and 4:1 (soft knee, slow attack), then an eq for extra shaping or a multiband comp depending on how aggressive or creative you want to be, then limit til your kick is where you want it. That's for people who don't have Klevgrand lol
Imo from watching his old tutorials(along with superstarO), what I noticed was in FL they just turned on the metronome and listened for the interference with the kick. They also slam the kick and snare with an SSL compressor. The 808, it's just lower harmonics to cloud a lower frequency and the "sample" is just highs being used as a track "guideline". But if you slam the snare and kick it's gonna pop but it sounds muddy so you shorten it to give you the pop like us shorten rappers like a lot. Just from what I've analysed. Great video tho bro.
Brent Carter if he using cytomix or ssl...his kick has to be even louder pre comp, for the snare to be so low, also it wouldn’t touch his brick wall on instruments. Very interesting. His gate might be the ssl channel strip tho...that’s a very sharp gate. Interesting 🤔 Rbass are those harmonics you speak of, and of course ozone if he used it
MG The Future yea from what I've seen and learned from pensado on the outboard was he turned the attack ALL THE WAY UP lmao so it thumps hard af and the snare slaps. I use dbx160 for that same use and hipass my samples or instruments to clear the low-end so only my bass holds that position. Its wrong but as a southern rapper and producer I love that thump
MG The Future I'll try that. What I learned from this video so it's appreciated. Just wanted to explain what I'd remembered from watching them. I still haven't tried Klevgrnd yet tho. I need to.
To set them all to 32 steps just click where it says steps (to the right of where it says variation) and change it to 32 this will set them all to 32 steps. You can also do this for resolution if you want them all to be something other than the default 1/16.
Dope Breakdown.the levels on his mix seems super "squashed" by wavform but the knoc is clean and loud. even in the intro. whatever he has on his efx chain is golden. Respect Da Process #KeepBangin
Found this really interesting, cheers man. I haven't really studied mixing this style of music etc, so it was very nice to see and learn a bit more of the mixing theory behind this type of genre. Will test it out in my own stuff. Thanks bro :)
Johnny was compressing his drums pretty heavily here to get that kind of attack.. slow attack fast release on both the kick and snare...I think that's what gave it that gate/punchy sound...Atleast in the first beat it looks that way judging by the waveform
this is mad dope you should do a series of mix breakdowns of different producers... if so please do DECAP next his drums are crazy dope ive been trying to figure out how he makes his stuff knock so damm hard..
damn MG the part when you talked about his kick snare and bass relationship in his mixes is spot on. I never noticed it until you pointed it out smh... you a beast with that magnifying glass, much props !
MG your good mayne!!! Yo, in your mixdown process, do you normal print your mix then master? I have gotten away from that. I'm mixing and mastering all in one session nowadays.
I respect you bro, but dunno if I can respect that "I ain't got time to do this how I wanna do"... you go hard when you get to play. So for you not to is .. well a smack in the face. Been with you through the rabbit hole when you make 3 beats outta one using that Halftone .. Just playing, in the moment. I say maaaaannnn... take the time to play. Shrug (in a rut right now fam, stay woke) RegaEnjoyed the breakdown, made sense as I have been trying to mix for a long time and I did the opposite where my beats came out soulless cause I squashed them with the limiter incorrectly. Thanks
But then, what is a non stuggle beat. Real talk, I'd set my beats up like that a while ago (I didn't do trap or whatever, just created) and had fun. Looked over them tho and man they got those characteristics. What in your opinion then makes a beat .. non struggle. Is it time or effort? Groove, basis or method? Could it be Intent? (FYI copped 3 of those books man.. good lookin out!) #norubberbandwaving
Every video I do is under 30 minutes, so the beats are like 10...15 tops. Those are struggle beats. No pre meditation, no finding the right sample, just right off the top. Granted I’m very good at that, but I’m not impressed with myself as such. Non struggle = thought and execution. OST of the time I’m just talking about practice
I do got a question would you be up for review a few of my tracks and give me some critique? I know you busy but i think it may be helpful to the community to analyze someone trying to comeup etc. Do this one if you do soundcloud.com/jnyce283/slow-and-easy
man i remember beating my head agaisnt the wall trying to figure out what he was doing... but i actually this out by going to big studios and learning from engineers... i wish u woulda dropped this months ago lol.... my question to you is can you PLEASE reverse engineer Rapsody - A Rollercoaster Jam Called Love in FL.. i cant get the drum swing to save my life lmao... big fan bro!
Great video analysis! I only have one gripe, all of these tracks are really old. (8-10 years or so?)

They worked tho...thats all that matters
with mumble rap now days no one would be interested or intelligent enough to rap on one of johnnys old style. But i i love his old beats for sure..
Yessirrr no amount of research replaces the grind, trial and error, failing and learning of it all. But with that being said, yeah this was a GREAT breakdown and extremely helpful for people who are learning. So much knowledge here.
Yo mg u the goat for this..and jhonny julliano u are a amazing producer and we need that template brother lol

Stay woke...MG DA GOAT!! Great video breakdown; now I’m hooked and about to watch more.
Appreciate it 💯

Good info, KLEVGrand ain’t that bad 🤑🤑
MG The Future I actually like how Grande Finale sounds and it made it to my shopping list, since I had to resubscribe... 😏

Brent Carter yeah man, that bass is everything. Only difference is, I stopped using high pass in favor of shelves
MG The Future I'll try that. What I learned from this video so it's appreciated. Just wanted to explain what I'd remembered from watching them. I still haven't tried Klevgrnd yet tho. I need to.
Brent Carter Imma put ssl gates in rotation soon as it’s on sale again...that bus comp nearly never is
To set them all to 32 steps just click where it says steps (to the right of where it says variation) and change it to 32 this will set them all to 32 steps. You can also do this for resolution if you want them all to be something other than the default 1/16.

So intent, pulling samples with intent, and planning/focus.. not quick pulling low hanging fruit and throw a drum kit on it? Am I decoding that?
Intro change? Smoothhh 👌🏾
I be alternating 😂🙏
Instead of L2 or L1 gice fabfilter stuff a try. I find i like them way better then alot of waves stuff.
Dem prices doe 😭💀🙏

DJ GeorgiePorgie 🙏
MG The Future brother I’m rolling with you until the wheels fall off👊🏿👍🖖🏽
This is innacurate because once the vocals come in the overall track might be compressed or turned down for the vocals can be mixed clearly
Adjust accordingly
