I'm still surprised you can even play Fallout 2 on this thing. I got it as an improved PSP, and to play XCOM EU, later modded it to play Tactics Ogre One Vision, but seeing the incredible MGS2-3 ports, San Andreas, and even friggin DOS games playing on this thing always blows my mind. It's so dang good, my Switch ends up warming the bench most of the time.

The one thing Vita isn't that good for is playing PSP games, unfortunately. Both models have much better screens (not to mention higher res) that PSP, with faster reaction time and wider colour range. It makes PSP titles looking worse than on original hardware, where all models have slight softness and kind of frame blend effect due to how quickly matrix responds. So yeah, you can enjoy PSP games on Vita, but they look more rough than on PSP - 2D titles do hold up when you turn off bilinear filtering, but 3D games are losing a lot of appeal. This is why I keep my old PSP around in addition to Vita. If I were to keep just one of them, Vita is a clear winner, though.

@@kamilciura7953 I've played thousands of hours of Tactics Ogre, Armored Core, Worms, and MG Acid, on both, having heard that before...and honestly think the Vita looks far better, as long as you have the Bilinear Filter on. No idea

My PS Vita addiction started in 2021, I was already using a PSP Go as my every day emulator pocket console. When I got my first PS Vita (2000 Model) it became my PSP Go's replacement for everywhere I went, playing all my retro games and PS Vita games I've never played and loved! Then after spending some time overseas, I got my hands on a PS Vita (1000 Model) and just loved the OLED Screen that it's now my main system when I want to kill time. I've been playing a lot of GTA China wars (because I love GTA but never played that title) and a ton of PS1 games that I never played full but remembered playing in my childhood. I hope Sony makes another handheld some day.

I've been modding the Vita since it was possible. And seeing now that it's as easy as the PSP back then, it's a real mindblow. I had stored away my Vita and just got it out once I heard the news and updated everything to the latest CFW. Everything without a PC. It's great. I even have the first gen SD2Vita adapter (the red, raw PCB looking one) and I ordered a current gen adapter!

If you had been modding the Vita for a long time, I would like to know if it's possible to somehow emulate PS2 games on it? I currently just have two in mind, Godzilla Save the Earth and Godzilla Unleashed. A friend of mine wants to sell me his old PS Vita for 50euros, he never uses it, but I would only be interested in modding and emulating for those two games.
Would it be worth it? Would it be possible? Nothing greater than the point of view of a veteran. Thank you a lot

Here's two useful things: Adrenaline Bubble Manager. You can take your PSP isos and PSX eboots that you've tossed on your Vita to use with Adrenaline, and turn each game into it's own individual bubble that'll appear on the Vita's home screen. You can even customize the bubbles with different images, different splash screens, and rename them to shorten 'em or remove extra stuff.
Mix that, with the HexFlow Launcher, that acts as a replacement home screen, and you've got yourself a super nice setup. Don't get me wrong, the bubbles aren't a bad way to go, but when you have an SD2Vita, and tons of games, the bubbles can be a bit of a hassle to search through. In my case, between Vita, PSP, PSX, Homebrew ports, and Homebrew apps, I actually have more bubbles than the Vita home screen allows. So I have to throw everything into folders, and it's kind of a mess of having to scroll through bubble folders to find what I want. HexFlow has 5 categories it sorts games into (and you can manually change the category for something if need-be). Vita, PSP, PSX, Homebrew, and ALL. It gives you a nice big left to right scrolling list of all your games, with 3D box art instead of bubble icons.
You can also use an autoboot plugin to force a specific app (like HexFlow) to launch automatically when you turn the Vita on, which is nifty.
There's also apps for custom Vita themes. There's PKGj, which, while questionable, lets you download Vita/PSP/PSX games for free straight from the Vita itself, there's stuff like the Apollo Save Tool that lets you backup your game saves (great for if you delete a game, but don't wanna lose your save), TrackPlug to keep track of your play time on each game, VitaGrafix that lets you upscale and unlock framerate for certain games, there's a few different apps and plugins to let you overclock your Vita to make things run better, an app called Bubble Recall that can save your home screen bubble layouts (in case you need to re-do your bubbles). There's a plugin that keeps track of your volume level between speakers and headphones and auto-adjusts to whatever the last volume was for it. There's a couple different plugins that lets you remap your entire controller layout, including the touch screen and back touch pad (you can even set buttons to a touch point, in case you want a jump button on the back pad or something).
As for Homebrew game ports, I personally have Grand Theft Auto 3, GTA Vice City, GTA San Andreas, Max Payne 1, Bully, Fallout 1, Fallout 2, Chocolate Doom, PrBoom Plus (also Doom), and Mario 64. I also have Sonic Time Twisted, a whole custom Sonic Homebrew game. But I know there's also ports of Dead Space 1 mobile, and some Mass Effect mobile game, as well as a bunch of other things.
And, mind you. You have Adrenaline. It's essentially an ENTIRE PSP on the Vita. As in, you can even run Homebrew PSP stuff, and use PSP plugins for PSP games. Even adhoc works between a normal PSP and the Vita.
Like, there is a LOT of stuff you can do on/with the Vita, and people are still actively making ports of games, and new apps and plugins, as well as updating the already existing stuff.

It has nearly full PS1 backwards compatibility and I'm able to play some PS3 exclusives that had Vita ports such as Sly Cooper Thieves in Time, Tokyo Jungle or the Atelier Dusk Trilogy. I was also happy to discover that the Vita has PSP hardware inside which allows me to play the entire PSP library so my SD card is pratically full at this point with PS1, PSP and Vita games.

As a former psp owner, I naturally bought my vita launch model in white. The design was so outstanding from the standard back then. Unfortunately, more than 5 years ago, it was in my stored luggage in a hotel in California that it got robbed, along with a dozen games. So I don’t really wanna think about it again. And one day I checked and saw some activity updates from my vita account from my ps3 so clearly someone bought it second hand. As I’m right now satisfied with my ps4, switch and soon later ps5, vita will forever be in my memory thinking it was the most cutting- edge thing in the world. (Maybe someday I might buy another one I don’t know. I still have the cases on the shelf for my vita games but not a single game in them. )

I have a PS Vita 1000 I inherited from a late friend. The Vita was ahead of its time when Sony released it back in 2011. It’s very powerful, and it holds its own against my Nintendo Switch. Yes, the Vita is underrated, and it deserves recognition. My PS Vita is modded, and I have RetroArch to play those retro games. The Vita also had great games that really showed its potential. Sadly, Sony didn’t support the Vita as they should have and they even tried to close down the PlayStation Store. This cause a huge uproar, and as a result, Sony reversed its decision and left it open.

This is the perfect moment for Sony to release PSP2, it could came out with similar specs to the switch (or switch 2) and they could use a similar architecture as Nintendo, to make easy for the switch developers to port games to PSP2. Basically, all the ports and exclusives that are created by 3rd parties for switch and those in the future for switch 2 could came easily to PSP2, with this, Sony could eat a piece of Nintendo's cake and also create new experiences with their IP's as they did with uncharted & kill zone during ps Vita life. It doesn't matter if not all console ps5 games work with PSP2, it would be great to have a PORTABLE console that can run all PS4 games, switch games and a few exclusive games.

I don't think it was the wrong product at the wrong time. I just think Sony gave up quickly seeing Nintendo steam roll the handheld market as they have and they wanted to decrease risk and put their eggs in one basket. I think they could have made the PS Vita much more succesful but I have a feeling the metrics they were looking at weren't as high as they would have liked them to be. I think Nintendo's handhelds would probably still be more popular but I wish Sony never gave up on the Vita. Aside from Nostalgia with the Gameboy Advance being my favorite handheld as a kid, the PS Vita is my top favorite handheld above the 3DS and DS and PSP respectively. If the Nintendo Switch was counted as just a handheld then that would be my top favorite but I don't count it as just a handheld. While the VITA had PS Vita TV and supported video output it wasn't pushed as a hybrid device as much as a handheld that could play console quality games. They delivered on that promise for a few years and I think everyone who played the VITA tends to agree they jumped ship too soon. I wish Sony would re-enter the handheld space.

Like you said, it wasn't the wrong time or wrong product, it was fine, it was the many wall and hoops you were in need to jump to get it on...'memory cards" specifically.
Sony and their stupid memory cards ruined the access to many people, instead of using SD or Micro SD they went with their specific format. You NEED that memory card to extend the Library , they were thinking people were stupid to spend more $$$ on a format that had no advantage whatsoever and is actually MORE expensive than anything out there, you cannot grab your camera or phone card to upgrade it, NO, you need the Vita memory card, and when you want to upgrade it you can just trash it.. because is useless anywhere else, huge Blow on accessibility ... and a point to consider when you buy a Vita..
The 3DS , Switch and SD, all of them know this very well, the costumer is not THAT stupid...they will buy the product, and the game... but if you are asking $100 + for a 'prime' memory card, is a huge problem, and your consumer base will shrink a lot..

@@billyc2493 My point exactly, and was a huge blow on the console, games were not small too, the problem is you are asking premium for some format that is already obsolete when it comes out... is not like microSD, you can buy a bigger one and the old one goes somewhere else. Considering the games were not cheap either, people did not have much of a choice there. Yeah, why use standard USB C Cable when you can use your own Vita Connector too? Things kept adding up... the memory card for me was the final nail...

No, not that like at all, it was the many things Sony put as obstacles to themselves that at the end, were not necessary an did hurt sales at the end, and they just gave up ( memory cards was MAIN problem ), they screwed up. Today would still be failure. Can you imagine the Switch being successful IF the storage was something like a special Nintendo custom memory card that costs 3x more than a normal storage format?? consider all the space you need to play digitally. or if the Cable was something HDMI-N something, like a custom HDMI? instead of a common USB-C, some weird expensive connector? The last one that had that was the 3DS...
