    Wow! I finally found a pattern that I wanted to try, but I was nervous about attempting something this difficult as an absolute beginner. However, your close up camera work, thorough explanations, and demonstration of all the steps and stitches has made be feel cautiously confident about attempting this. Thank you!

    • @MsAmira1988
      @MsAmira1988 4 года назад

      @@ohjedward I went for a pretty large ball, weighing at around 12.3oz (350g). The length was a little over 1200yd (about 1100m). So pretty big! I followed the pattern on the website, and got the Baby Bernat yarn, but really any yarn works as long as it fits a US needle size 7 (4.5mm). Hope this helps!

    I have been knitting since I was 6...WELL over 35 years, lol. But with casting on in long tail, ( the way I was taught by my grandmother) I always had to take two or three tries to get a proper length, and suitable tail, she taught me to measure by length of needles which is difficult when working in the round. THANK YOU for demonstrating a much easier and more precise method!

    For anyone else who wants to try out this pattern but at a different size, I have figured out the cast on multiples! It takes a little work to do the math on your part BUT not only does this allow you to adjust the size, IT SOLVES FOR THE ASYMMETRY on the edges!!!!!
    Equation for the cast on multiples: (16 x even number) + 26 = S
    S is the number you should cast on. After you knit your 8 rows of garter stitch, knit the setup row as instructed noting that you're working on WS: K10, [Kfb, K15 to end of row]. The number of increases you get here should be +1 of the even multiple you used in the equation. For me, I did 16 x 14 and had 15 increases. This new total of stitches will be referred to as P, where P = S + number of increases.
    To figure out your blanket symmetry BEFORE starting the pattern repeat, on a piece of paper make a T-chart thing that has:
    10 | [ P - 20 ] | 10 -------> for me, my chart is 10 | 245 | 10
    The number in the brackets should be odd. Subtract the last digit from P so that it is rounded to the nearest 10th. Ex: 10 | 240 | 10
    Now with the remainder, divide it so that one number is greater than the other by one, Ex: I have 5 remainder and split it 2 & 3
    Next, add these 2 digits to the side 10s of your chart where the smaller number (t) is on the left, bigger(n) on the right; Ex: 12 | 240 | 13
    What these numbers correspond to is the knit stiches for the borders and the number of stitches used in the lace design. So now for Rows 1 and 3, instead of K10, *xxx* K10 you should know be knitting K(n), *xxx*, K(t) Ex: K13, *xxx*, K12
    So when knitting, when looking at the RS, it should look like the right border has a garter (n) stitches wide and the left has (t) stitches.
    To solve for asymmetry, on the WS (the even/purl rows): K(t +1), *xxx*, K(n) Ex: K13, *xxx*, K13
    What this does is absorb the one column of stockinette stitch into the left side border and balances out the number of stitches in both side borders.
    So after these calculations, the 4 row lace pattern repeat should look like:
    R1: K(n). *K1. yo. K2. ssk. K2tog. K2. yo. K1. Rep from * to last (t) sts. K(t).
    R2: K(t+1). Purl to last (n) sts. K(n).
    R3: K(n). *yo. K2. ssk. K2tog. K2. yo. K2. Rep from * to last (t) sts. K(t).
    R4: As 2nd row.
    For the decrease row and last garter edge, follow original pattern as is.
    And there you go, a symmetrical blanket pattern!

      This blanket is still a WIP for me, but I thought I'd share the math I did to figure out how to to increase the width for an adult size blanket. A tip I have for those who are struggling with keeping the same number of stitches in the lace pattern is to use stitch markers... lots and lots of stitch markers lol. I have one placed after every 10 sts (so after every repeat in the row) so that I don't have to go through the trouble of reading back multiple stitches/repeats to figure out where I lost track

    There's a little bit of asymmetry along one end of the pattern, between the edge and the lace - a stripe of 1 stitch wide stockinette, and which I find completely unnecessary. It's visible on the right side at 2:04 (pattern image) and on the left at 28:24 (swatch).
    There's a couple of easy solutions to it though, to make the pattern as symmetrical as possible:
    1) Make the entire pattern one stitch narrower (start with 169 sts and increase to 179), and for the last repetition of the lace pattern every row, skip the last stitch before doing the outer edge.
    2) Make one of the edges one stitch wider than the other - I don't think anyone will notice that difference.
    I'm just a beginner, and there are at least two or three new techniques for me in this pattern, but I will definitely be knitting a nice comfy blanket for my sister's kid now. Thanks for this video!

    A very y simple but tricky pattern. I messed up on the first 8 rows, can see the mess-up at the bottom of the blanket. First mistake was, after that mess-up, I wrote the pattern down, EASY, on the first front row you K1 & then yo, on the the 2rd row, you yo & then K2. I keep ending up with 1 st less. So obviously increase it back up right before the border 10 sts. Found another mistake....The 10 stitches I increased at the beginning, GONE, :-( I have finished 30" already. I am not undoing. It looks good. I have an eye for details and I can always pick up mistakes, but who ever make it for, can never tell. This is a proper wool that I am using, soooo hot these days got heat blisters on my fingers. I am so behind on my projects since working from home. The baby I made for is already born. Now all the clothes I am making are for this coming winter. Yeah, I could have crocheted a blanket in two days. But my love is ALWAYS for knitting. Even the cardigans & hates I have made are all knitted. Now that this blanket is coming to an end in a couple of days, I will search your other projects. I REALLY love this blanket & so does the girl I made it for. I better hurry up & post her things out after finishing. She has moved abroad and & I will ship the parcel, which is the cheapest way to go, but it will take 3 months by ship. She also wants a red n white shawl, that unfortunately would have to be crochet.

    • @GoodKnitKisses

      Sana Moin you could do that. You would need to have a small bobbin or ball of yarn at end end for the hornets and the main color in the middle. Just twist the yarn where it changes color.

      Olia Luis hello! Yes, great question. You will count your slip knot in knitting. It is open and makes a stitch and you will work right into it. It’s rare to not count that. However if you have crocheted before it’s the opposite; in crochet you don’t count it. So it’s a valid question.

    • @GoodKnitKisses
      @GoodKnitKisses  3 года назад +1

      I believe it was to accommodate gauge for that stitch pattern once it is added to the garter on either side. The garter is a looser stitch so the lace pattern needs more stitches to adjust. If not then the middle would look like it was too small for the border around it. I hope that helps.

    What do you do if let's say I finish a row with pattern 3 and have 1 extra stitch? I'm like 20 rows in. I'd hate to have to restart 😭

    I am a beginner knitter, I was wondering if i absolutely had to had circular needles. My needles are size 7; however, they are straight. Will they still work with this pattern?

      Rhiannon Cannoe not sure if you got your answers or not....but it depends on what you're making.if it's a scarf that's only one or two inches wide then you can just use straight needles but of its a blanket it would be best to use these as straight ones would be hard to work with.

      I knitted a christening shawl on straight needles and I had 420 stitches on! You can knit large items on straight needles just buy the longest you can find. I am a seasoned knitter though of some 40 years experience.

    • @GoodKnitKisses
      @GoodKnitKisses  3 года назад

      Yes but straight needles are only so long. At some point you will run out of room on your needle. If you are making the smaller sample the answer is yes. Or you can make smaller panels and sew it together. If you want to make wider items then you will need circular needles.

    Could I make this but do the border in stockinette stitch rather than garter? Would any other adjustments be needed other than tracking knit and purl rows for the edging? Thanks for your help!

    • @GoodKnitKisses
      @GoodKnitKisses  5 лет назад

      You could do the border in stockinette but it would curl. You could substitute a seed stitch border to break it up instead though and it wouldn’t curl.

    How could I go about cutting this in half? I would like to use size 10 needles.

    • @zarraybenishan
      @zarraybenishan 4 года назад +1

      Its a 10 stich repeat. U can measurement to see how much stitches u want. In this patern ot starts with 170 then one row increase to 180. So if u want half then.
      If u go half the stiches u will start off with 85 stiches n then one row of increase of only 5 stiches will give u 90. Then just follow the pattern of 2 rows. All in between is also 10 stich repeat.

    • @GoodKnitKisses
      @GoodKnitKisses  3 года назад

      It’s not really a beginner type pattern so I’d say it depends on the person and how much time you have to dedicate to it. I don’t really have a good answer since it depends on many factors.

    I wish the pattern would have given "multiples of" for the cast-on. I am finding it very difficult to figure out how to make it wider and keep a 10 stitch border on each side. I think the border stitch number would have to be adjusted somehow - like 12 stitches rather than 10 if you wanted to do 11 increases on row 5.

    • @GoodKnitKisses
      @GoodKnitKisses  4 года назад

      I agree it is a bit frustrating. Currently it is 160 sts between the borders so that’s 16 repeats. How repeats are you trying to make yours? I can try to help. If it’s only a few repeats you may be fine just adding 10 for each to your repeats. When you increase just stop at the new number (so if adding two repeats cast on 190 and increase until 200). If it’s more then you’ll need to add in a few more increases.

    • @bumblesby
      @bumblesby 4 года назад

      @@GoodKnitKisses I think it is the other way around which is where it gets complicated. For the cast-on, I think it is 10 repeats of 16 :). You are increasing 10 times in row 5 (every 16th stitch) but they included the 10 for the left border in the counting which is where it gets confusing. Your swatch had 3 "columns" and you only increased 2. So a 2 increase looks like 10 | 10 | 10 in the body. I saw in the video that you did not have 10 stitches for the left border after the 2 repeats. I think you only had 7 left..
      I tried a 3 increase swatch to see if I could work it out... I cast on 3 x 16 + 10 = 58 stitches. This gave me 4 repeats with 10 stitches on the right and 11 on the left. One stitch is not a big deal though. I could cast-on 59 stitches then make an 11 border on each side.... I think LOL It may work out better to do an even number of repeats. That way you could probably adjust the border stitches more evenly.
      Thanks so much for responding and making the tutorial video!!!

      Oh. I see. You are basing off of my swatch. That was for demonstration purposes only. The pattern is at the link in the description. It has a pattern repeat of 10 with a border on each side of 10. Cast on is 170 and increases to 180. There are 160 stitches in the main pattern with 10 on each side for border.

    • @bumblesby

      @@GoodKnitKisses No, I was using the downloaded pattern and examining row 5 which is where the magic happens. The pattern seems to be "stuck" at the 170 cast on rows to make the 16 repeats starting in row 6. If you want more or less than the 16 once you get to row 6 I think the borders have to be adjusted to keep the "body" centered in the entire project.

    • @bumblesby
      @bumblesby 4 года назад

      Oops, sorry it is row 9 where the magic happens. On my swatch I only did 4 rows of the knit stitch to get to the body faster so I had 5 stuck in my head.
