- Here's a beautiful easy baby blanket to knit. Just 2 Purl, 2 Knit which creates a really nice effect that looks like bobbles. Follow along with the video or see the full pattern below.
NOTE:
I tried to keep this pattern as simple as possible so I have kept the instructions the same for the left and right borders. Therefore it may look like the left side is backwards. But it did not bother me and hope you are happy with the results.

Thank for showing this way to add new ball of yarn. Lots of rewinding and sweating thru it, but I got it and I did it! I am still practicing stitches and will be doing the baby blanket with you when I get more confidence!
Perfect. Perseverance!
Thank you! I made this for my granddaughter who is due to arrive in January. Beautiful!!
That’s great! I’m sure she will love it!
Okay Cathy,I've started making my first baby blanket for my great-great Nephew thanks to you and your wonderful way of teaching this.
Yeah. Glad your enjoying knitting the baby blanket.
Such a beautiful, easy baby's blanket. Gorgeous.
Glad you like the baby blanket!
Yours is by far the best illustration of a Russian Join that I have seen!!!! I may try it again. I have been using the Magic Knot. Thank you so much for sharing.
So glad to hear that. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Never did a knit cast on. Love it and love this pattern. Great tutorial. Thank you
Glad you found something new to learn.
This blanket is perfect! This was my first time ever knitting and this tutorial was so easy to follow. I’d always wanted to try knitting but could never follow along until this video. Though it took me several tries to finally get things right in the beginning, the blanket turned out fabulous. Perfect size to swaddle my baby girl! I even got compliments from the nurses and doctors in the hospital about the blanket 😂 Thank you so much for such a clear tutorial on such a comfy blanket!
Aaahhhh. Congrats on your baby girl. So happy that you could follow along and had great success knitting your very first knitting project. Wow!
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts how many stitches please

Yes. Glad you like the blanket. I love the little bobble look. And congrats on soon to be gramma!
So excited to try this. Working on my first knitting project.
That’s great! Happy knitting!
I knit this for my first baby arriving in September, it’s so perfect. I’ve never felt like a good knitter before this. Thank you!
Aaahhh. Congrats on your baby to be! And congrats on knitting your baby blanket!
What is the n leanth and width of baby blanket
So happy I found this blanket pattern! Been knitting for a while and I always stay with generally “safe” projects. Loved that this taught me me 2 new techniques- knitted cast on and Russian join. How have I not been doing a Russian join all this time- this is soooo useful. For all those having trouble finding the same yarn…..I’m using Baby Bee My Sweet Love yarn that I ordered from Hobby Lobby. It’s 5 bulky and I needed 7 skeins. I’m using size 10, 36 in circulars. I’m on my 2nd ball and it’s looking so good. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this pattern!
Thanks Angie for your great comment. Glad that you are enjoying this pattern! Thanks for the suggestion for other viewers on the Baby bee my sweet love yarn. Hard to find supplies these days.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts finished the blanket! Came out really nice 😊. If you have a baby hat pattern that uses the same weight yarn, please share it. Thanks again.
Angie that’s great to hear that you finished your blanket and you are happy with it. I did publish a video on hats for the whole family. I used the same weight yarn. It’s not a bonnet but more off a toque. Here’s the link to the video and the patterns are in the description of the video. ruclips.net/video/GVTeRA4Gq34/видео.html
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts perfect thanks!
Thank you for showing this!! Can listen to you all day.. your voice is calming and reassuring for beginner me !! Thank you!!! Have a blessed day
Thanks so much Gabe! Glad my video style works for you.
I knit all my children's clothes when they were newborn to about 6 years of age --- sweaters, baby clothes, blankets, hats, booties etc. The problem is that I have not knit for about 30 years. My mom taught me to knit and she was a superb knitter. So here, I am 30 years later, and I just watched your beautiful video for this baby blanket. I'm going to begin this knitting project as I way to get back into knitting. You created a great tutorial video and I'm ready to jump back into knitting! Many many thanks! I'm so excited to begin today!
I’m sure it will come back to you very fast! Thanks for your lovely comment and enjoy knitting your blanket.
Thank you Crafti Patty, made this blanket for my 3rd baby due mid February, can't wait to use it.
Aahhh. Exciting. Glad you enjoyed knitting the blanket for baby no. 3!
Enjoyed your tutorial very much, thank you. I am a beginner who has made a few scarves and now want to start a blanket. Great to learn the Russian join. Saves having to weave ends in and seems more secure. Thank you. I will try your pattern in the near future. Thank you for making the next step in knitting doable!
Glad it was helpful!
This pattern is perfect for what i want , never crochet anything but granny squares, so i found this one .. thank you 🇦🇺

I love the look of this blanket and it looks like it will be fun to stitch. Thank you for sharing your great video!
Thanks for watching!
What a beautiful baby blanket. ♥️
Thanks so much!
That is a pretty border. The way you joined the two yarns was really neat also, I will have to practice doing that cause I'm not that good at doing things like that but I'm a new learner, looks like it would pull apart but it doesn't.I'm going to try and make this for my first great-great nephew who is due next March.
The Russian join is really strong and I love that you don’t have to sew in all those ends. Enjoy knitting the blanket!
First time knitting, for my great grand daughter due in February. Love this blanket.
Woohoo! Congrats on the great grand child to be! I’m sure she will love the blanket.
I love to knit that blanket! Thanks
Oh good! Enjoy!
I like using baby yarn, even for adults if I can find the right colors. The chunky yarn you're using here looks dreamy and squishy!
Me too. I love soft yarns.
I made this for a friend's baby, and this was so fun to make and it turned out beautiful! Thank you for the pattern!
Wonderful!
Hi. I really enjoyed watching this video. You explain things just like my mum, and I found it so easy to follow. Thank you, I'll be following you from now on ☺

Amazing tutorial, the blanket is beautiful!
Yeah! Glad you like it.
Thank you, very good tutorial, very easy to follow. Love it.
Thanks Sue!
Gorgeous! Im making this for my great nephew. I find that I tend to make mistakes easily (just from not paying close enough attention). I put stitch markers in to mark off the border, and every 12 stitches in between. Now, i check my work after each set of 12 stitches. Problem solved!
Oh yeah! Glad you were able to work out a system that works for you! I’m sure your great nephew will be very pleased with your blanket.
Yes, the Russian join is awesome. Love it. Thank you

How many skeins did you use?
Beautiful instruction! I love the technique for joining the yarn! Wonderful tutorial. . .Patti is really easy to listen to and follow! Many thanks!
Thanks so much Lynn for the lovely comment.
How many stitches would you use for a blanket 30inches by 35 inches. Thanks
I had cast on 108 stitches to make mine 31” wide so to make it smaller by 1” you can try 104 stitches. Keep in mind that everyone’s tension is different so it might not be exactly 30” wide.
Thank you for your reply. Have started knitting and love the pattern.
Glad you are loving the pattern!
Thank you for such a lovely pattern! I am nearing the end and have just done the last 4 rows to create the ribbing. My question is, should I do 2 additional rows on the ribbing? In the beginning I did 4 rows for the ribbing and started the pattern of K2 P2, so the ribbing is to 6 rows long, no? I hope this makes sense. Thanks so much!
It is 4 rows of ribbing but the pattern with rows 1-4 does make it look like more rows. You will see when you do it. Just finish rows 1-4 and then do your 4 rows for ribbing. Your almost there!
I'm going to try this. You have explained it so well. Thanks
That’s great. Enjoy knitting the blanket.
My brother just surprised me yesterday that I’m going to be an auntie, and I want to make a blanket. I don’t know the gender and a white blanket is definitely the best route.
I’m also a first time knitter, but I’m definitely going to try this one out!
Congrats on being an auntie soon! Have fun knitting the blanket.
Thank you for your time and knowledge. The Russian join is an excellent example!
Glad you think so! It's something different to try for sure.
Patti,I can't wait to knit this and gave you a thumbs up. That Russian join is amazing I always just thread the rest of the yarn through the stitches but this is wonderful. I'll send a review when I finish the blanket (fingers crossed). Thank you, Sonia Flaum, So. California
Enjoy your knitting project.
First time knitter here and you have made this so easy after a few blunders (had to start again three or four times) now getting through my first ball of wool. Hoping i manage this in time for my friends baby shower ❤ thank you
Great job!
Wow!!! I have never seen that join before. Thank you so very much for teaching it. I am a new subscriber and making baby blankets for three different Moms. beautiful pattern. i always use stitch markers to note the boarder. so i don't have to think and constantly count
That's a great idea!
Lovely tutorial and super blanket
Thank you so much!
I started finger knitting, and I’d like to learn traditional knitting you go a bit faster than the first tutorial I watched but I find it easier to follow you. It’s a bit hard to follow which side of the needle you are wrapping the yarn, so I’ll experiment until I have it down. I’m knitting blankets for my two nephews. Fingers crossed!
I hope you figure it out okay. Just think of the circular needles as two needles and forget there is a wire between. When you are finished one row just turn around and knit the second row. Wish you success!
Beautiful blanket excellent tutorial 👌
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the tutorial.
Another beautiful project Patti. Thank you so much!
Thanks so much Gillian. Glad you liked it!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I've been wanting to learn how to knit for years and you explain everything so clearly and at a great speed. I just made my first baby grandson this blanket and I'm so excited to gift it. I'm sure there are special washing instructions before gifting this blanket and I'd like to give washing instructions if you have any great tips you could share that won't ruin the integrity of it's newness. Thank you so much!!
If you used acrylic yarn than you can wash on a gentle cycle and in dryer till slightly damp than smoothly hang to dry so it keeps its shape.
Hi I absolutely love this video.I already do knitting so already knew some of the techniques I just decided that I would do an easy blanket for my nieces new baby. I live in the UK so I kind of found it hard to figure out what type of chunky wool year when using so I just picked up some more that stated it was chunky. I decided not to use the circular Knitting Needles as I don’t get on with them very well. so I just used 4mm Needles so I hope it turns out okay.
I hope it works out great too for you. The circular needles are just handy to hold all the stitches. It’s a bit of a scrunch up to fit them on straight needles.
About to give it second go, first one made me very proud, I know I'm gonna mail it next time
Thank you so much for your help and support and time 🙏💓🙏💓🙏💓🙏
So good to hear that you had success!
This blanket is really nice. I love it!!!!😃Thanks so much
Glad you like it!
beautiful blanket, wish you were here to teach me more in person
I know. I try my best to make it understandable but always easier in person for sure.
That is a beautiful pattern and so easy! I will be trying thisone! Thank you!!
Please do!
Amazing and Beautiful.. Thanks for Sharing .would that size be big enough for a Christening Blanket .?🌈🌈
Thanks Treasa! I find the Christening blankets are more of a rectangle shape so it drapes down past the baby’s feet. This blanket can be made in any size. I made this one 31x35”. For a wider blanket cast on more stitches in multiples of 4. So cast on 4, 8 or 12 more stitches. Keep knitting more rows for a longer blanket.
This blanket is beautiful. Easy to follow. Thanks Patti
Glad you like it!
I love this pattern! This is my first baby blanket and second knitting project.
My yarn, however, keeps twisting. Any ideas on how to correct this when doing the knit -2 purl 2 stitch?? Thanks so much.
I always pull the yarn from the inside of the ball. This prevents the ball of yarn from rolling all over the place and twisting. You can also place your ball of yarn in a bowl and that should help any twisting of the yarn. I hope I understood your question correctly.
Finally, someone who knits like me.
I get what you are saying! I have watched some others knitting and it just looks weird to me. Lol. Everyone has their own style.
I grew up in England and this is how my, who knitted fabulous items, taught me.

Very nice. I hope you give us some more patterns
Thanks Edna. You never know. I have a large list of requests.
Please do more of this kind of knitting videos!
I will put on my list of to dos!
Thank you so much for this video! I'm about to be a great Aunt and want to make my niece a blanket ( I've never knitted! )Could I use 3 cakes of cotton blend yarn for this? Also, would the Russian join work for adding in a new color? If not, how would I do that? Thank you so much for your time!
It’s nice to be able to use more natural yarns like cotton. Just check the washing instructions and make sure it is washable for the recipient. Also your yarn may not be as bulky as the yarn I used. So I would suggest knitting a little sample of a cast on of 20 stitches and knit about 16 rows. Then you can see how many stitches per inch you have knitted. You may need to cast on more stitches than I did if you want the same size blanket.
You can use the Russian join for sure. It’s such a fun join especially when you don’t have to sew in the ends later on.
Hello. Thank you very much for the clear explanation and the Russian join is great! I have 2 questions: 1. If I'm using a thinner yarn with 4.00 needles how many stitches do you think I should cast? 2. Do you always knit the first stitch?
Question 1. Depends how big you want your blanket. This pattern is forgiving as you can make it any size you want by adding 4,8 or 12 or more to make it larger. I used 6mm needles with a bulky 5 yarn. You are using 4mm with a size 4 yarn. So, it’s a bit of a guess for me. The best way is to do a little test sample to test your gauge. Then you will know how many stitches per inch. If you want the same size as mine as a guesstimate you could cast on 132.
Question 2. Yes, every row starts with a knit stitch.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts amazing, thank you very much!
Thanks for showing the Russian join ☺️
It’s a fun join for sure!
Thank you, Patti, for the prompt detailed response. By watching your video, I have learned how to cast on stitches. I'm practicing on some old yarn.
Can this moss stitch baby blanket be made with Bernat Softee Light 3 yarn? I couldn't find Bulky 4 or 5 at either Michael's or Jo-Ann's. So would Light 3 work? If not, I will continue my search for Bulky 5 or 4. Sorry to be such a nuisance, but my ignorance leaves me no choice. Moreover, I've watched several videos. Your teaching method is the best and extremely helpful for beginners. Thank you.
Yarn is in short supply right now so use what you can find. If you are going to use a thinner yarn than just look on the label and it will tell you the correct needle size to use. Because you are knitting with a thinner yarn the overall blanket will be a smaller size. If you want your blanket to be about the same size as mine than you can add more cast on stitches in multiples of 4. That means you can add 4, 8, 12 or 16 more stitches etc.
Enjoy your knitting project!
Crafty Patti Thank you very much. Sending you a virtual hug. It's very nice of you to take the time to send me detailed replies.
No worries.
Thanks so much for the video! Can't wait to get stuck into this blanket. I was hoping you could help me with something. I've cast on in the way you've shown and my wool is now looking like yours at 3.25 in the video, i.e. Attached to both needles. What do I do now so that I can start the first row, please? When you start it, you only have the wool on one needle xx
Just slide the last stitch that’s on your right needle on to the left needle with the rest of your cast on stitches. Go back and count to make sure you have the correct amount of cast on stitches. If you have too many than remove them from your left needle. You are now ready to start your first row of knitting.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts thank you so much for the quick reply! I've done that now and am ready to start the first row. Yay! Xx
Your very welcome!
Beautiful 🥰❤️
Thank you! 🤗
Patti, I love the way you have explained every step. Thank you. I am an absolute beginner and am feeling lost because I cannot find this yarn in any color. I purchased Bernat Softee Baby yarn. Can this yarn be used for this Moss stitch blanket? If yes, please tell me how many skeins I would need; also, if I should use circular or straight needles and what size. I also bought Bernat Baby blanket yarn Super bulky 6. Did I make a mistake? Is that meant only for crocheting? I am in panic mode because I have to make a baby blanket before April this year. Thanks in advance for your help.
Hi. Super bulky BLANKET yarn is way thicker than what I used in my tutorial. A super bulky yarn is not as thick as a super bulky blanket yarn. The blanket yarn will not work for this pattern. Sorry. There may be a knitting pattern on the label of the yarn that you bought and you can try that or try and find a yarn that is closer to what I used. Any regular bulky 4 or a bulky 5. Just not a bulky blanket weight yarn.
The only reason I use circular needles is so it can comfortably hold all the stitches. You just use the needles the same way you would straight needles. The wire in the middle is just to hold all the stitches. If you have really long straight needles you might be able to squish all the stitches on.
Hope that makes you feel a little less worried.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts Hi Patti. Would Bernat softee chunky yarn work for ur tutorial?
With supplies being hard to get these days I say go ahead and substitute. The yarn I used was a bulky 5 and you want to use a bulky 6. Just use the needle size recommended on the yarn label. Your blanket will end up bigger than mine. So just cast on less stitches.
To figure out how many stitches to cast on it is best to knit a small sample.
Cast on about 16 stitches and knit about 8 rows. Measure how many stitches you knit per inch.
Example:
Let’s say you knit 4 stitches per inch and you want your blanket to be 30” in width.
Then just multiply 4x30 which equals 120. So you will cast on 120 stitches.
I have knitted 3 of your "soft cuddly baby blankets" using Bernat Pipsqueak baby baby print. Beautiful! I would like to knit this Moss baby blanket using the same pipsqueak yarn. Could I adapt this pattern by casting on more stitches in multiples of 4's. Perhaps the Pipsqueak yarn is too fine? thank you
You could always double up and knit with two strands of the pipsqueak. Or cast on more stitches and use smaller needles will work too.
This is such a wonderful pattern.. thank u so much🤍love from COLO
So glad you like it!
I’m excited to start this blanket! I will be following your video exactly so not to mess it up. I have a question that might seems dumb but I’m still learning to knit. Your end blanket measured 31X35, I would like mine to be bigger for crib mattress. So that I understand correctly, to make it wider, I would add additional stitches of 4. That means, instead of casting on the 108 stitches, I would cast on 112, or 116? For the length, just stop at the length I like?
Also, if I cast on the 116, still follow directions exactly the same, correct? Making sure to end with the 6 stitches to P2,K2,P2. Thank you!! Denise
You have it exactly right! Enjoy knitting the blanket.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts One more question, my yarn is Super Bulky 6, it says to use Size 11 needles, should I or stick with Size 10 like you?
Hi Denise, This blanket pattern creates a looser knit so for that reason stick with the size 10 needles.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts thank you!!
thanks for showing us the join the yarn i didn't know that one i must try it.
I like the Russian join. Less ends to weave in afterwards! Thanks for watching!
Hi Patie, thank you for sharing this pattern. I will be using Baby Delight yarn by loops & threads, it's a thinner yarn. I would like to know if I want the baby blanket to be the same size as yours 31" X 35" do I still cast on 108 stitches or do I need to cast on more as this yarn is thinner?
Everyone’s tension is a bit different. The best advice is to do a gauge test. Cast on about 20 stitches and knit about 10 rows. Then measure how many stitches you knit per inch. Example: If you knit 5 stitches per inch and you want your blanket 30” wide then you know you have to cast on 150 stitches.
Hi thank you for the tutorial. I am on my 20th or 30 row and just now I realized that the right border is different than the left. I am following your directions to the T but can you explain why is different?
In order to make it easy enough for beginners I kept the pattern as simple as possible. I have a note in the description to say that borders will look reversed. It didn’t bother me that the borders were a bit different but I know it bothers some.
I have not had time to do a workaround as yet. Always so busy. Sorry if it bothers you.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCraftsthank you for your reply, I thought I was doing something wrong.
No you are doing it right.
Hi there! I love the look of this blanket. I’d like to try it using some leftover wool - much lighter 3 ply stuff which would require using 4mm needles. Do you think that would work on the pattern?
The pattern will work with any yarn and the equivalent size needles to match your yarn. The overall size will be smaller or larger depending on your choice of yarn or needles. You can always cast on more stitches.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts thank you for your help!
Thank you for this video and detailed instructions! I could only find a super bulky 6 yarn. Can I still use the size 10 needles or will I need to purchase size 11 as recommended on the yarn label?
The size 10 needles will be fine.
Wish had someone that was having a baby gorgeous
Make it for yourself to cuddle up in. Just make a larger one!
I showed my husbnad had you added both yarns and he was amazed
Haha. Even impressed your husband. That’s great.
Thank you for his beautiful video. This is my first blanket and so enjoying how it is coming out. I need some guidance as to the length it should be for a christening blanket. I read below that add on until desired length. My blanket is 32 inches wide. Please guide me as to appropriate finished length. Thank you.
There is no right or wrong size for christening blanket sizes. I like to see a christening blanket that is a bit longer so it hangs down a bit. So if you have 32” for your width than try for 36” for your length.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts Thank you Patti for your quick response. I am looking forward to finishing my first blanket for my soon to be grandchild. It really is coming out so very beautiful thanks to your wonderful guidance.
Congrats on your grandchild to be. I was so excited for my first. Now I have two and 1 more coming very soon! Glad you are enjoying the knitting of your blanket!

Well there you go. That’s great! Enjoy the cuddly soft blanket!
A very nice video, thank you. Pamela hall
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice
Thank you.
Thank you. I've learned so many things from this video. Beautiful blanket
Glad it was helpful!
THIS IS COOL
Thank you!
Hi there! Thanks for great video. The yarn you used it out but I got a Bernat in 6 so I got 2 extra rolls. Should I cast on fewer stitches? Thanks!
The blanket doesn’t have to be the exact same size as mine. Some 5 weights are very similar to 6 weights. You can cast on as many stitches as you want but in multiples of 4.
I cannot wait to start this beautiful blanket! I could not find 6mm circular needles but I did find 6.5 mm ones; will this be okay or will I have to add more stitches?
You will be fine with the 6.5 needles
Patti, Your blanket is lovely! Can you give us the pattern so the side borders won't look backwards? Many thanks!
I designed the pattern so it was the easiest to understand for beginners. I would have to re write the pattern and I am swamped so unfortunately I just don’t have the time.
Approx How much yarn in length should I save for the border and cast off? I’m using super bulky 6 Bernard baby blanket yarn (which actually gave me about 42” in width with 108 stitches).
I would say leave about 15 yards to do your ribbed border and cast off. If you have enough yarn left over then leave 17 yards for good measure.
I would love to make this blanket. Can I cast on the way I’m used to doing it, or do I have to use your method? Thanks in advance.
Yes, definitely cast on the way you are used it.
Thanks for this helpful video - much clearer than others on RUclips. I have made blankets for previous grandchildren but never a good result. I tried knitting squares, sewing together etc but it was always a disappointing result. I like your clear & calm way of instruction & would like to make this one for another baby - this one due in the summer months. Would it work in a lighter, less chunky yarn & if so approximately how many cast on stitches? Thankyou & best wishes from Sydney Australia
Glad you like my style of teaching.
When you are changing up needle sizes and yarn sizes from original pattern than it is best to knit a small sample gauge.
Cast on about 20 stitches and knit about 8 rows.
Look and see how many stitches you knit in your inch(2.5cm)
So if you have knit 6 stitches to your 1”(2.5cm) then you can figure out how many stitches to cast on to get the right size.
If you want your blanket to be 31”(78.8cm) wide than you will multiply. 31x6”=186 (78.8x15.3cm) stitches to cast on.
Just make sure your final number is a multiple of 4. Add or minus a cast on stitch to make it work.
Hope that makes sense.
Love the Russian tie!!!
It’s cool isn’t it!
Hello! I love this pattern and almost finished, but I have small little holes in various spots throughout the blanket. Am I doing something wrong? I wondering if I'm not pulling the thread tight enough? Thanks for your help!
If your pattern looks consistent than my guess would be uneven tension when you are knitting or you may have dropped a stitch or knitting two together. But that would throw off your pattern.
