Moss stitch is part of the “broken rib” family of stitches, including seed stitch and Irish moss stitch. These stitches are variations of the traditional 1×1 and 2×2 rib stitches.
Where traditional rib features columns of knits and purls, broken rib stitches “break up” the columns by introducing errant knits and purls to create totally new stitch patterns.
Moss stitch is very similar to seed stitch. While seed stitch alternates knit and purl stitches every row, Moss Stitch alternates every other row. You can think of Moss Stitch as a “longer” version of seed stitch.
The result is a four-row pattern that’s beautifully nubby in texture. It can stand alone in a pattern (as with the Moss Stitch Scarf) or serve as a background stitch to a complex cable pattern.
Moss Stitch lays flat and is fully reversible, making it perfect for scarves, shawls and blankets.

Just to add for beginners …..
You just need to concentrate for the first 4 rows.
Get it wrong once and you’re stuffed.
Keep checking your work and undo a few stitches is better than a row 😖 I know that the hard way!!
Moss is basically wonky rib. If you can rib and do purl and knit you can do this.
Beyond 4 rows it’s obvious what to do.
For the first 4 rows I often fluff it… not because it’s hard its due to lack of concentration as I’m used to ribbing! It’s a great pattern that lays flat and is thick. It uses more wool and doesn’t grow quickly but I love it for a structured jumper vest or cardigan as it doesn’t tend to stretch whilst worn
Also great for a scarf as it’s double sided!❤️
My aunt taught me how to knit stitch when i was very young, and i never learned past that point after she passed away. Your tutorials have helped me get back into knitting, and my aunt would be very proud of how much i am learning 🫶

Your series on beginner’s stitches is fantastic. I wonder if you could do a tutorial on creating or adapting patterns. For instance, I have a pattern for a plain raglan sweater but I have some beautiful green tweed and I think it would look fantastic using the moss stitch. How do I convert a stockinette sweater to a moss stitch sweater. Thanks for making learning to knit fun and easy!
Converting stitches should be pretty straightforward. If the moss stitch has the same gauge as what the raglan pattern calls for you could substitute it
This is the best and easiest description I have seen - thank you so much.... I will be teaching myself the other stitches now as well.... it helps that you knit the way I was taught at school over 40 years ago, as I could not follow other vlogs as easily. This is the first time knitting was making sense to me, as it looked like something I had learnt to do as a child, but I was only taught basic knit and purl stitch. So thankful I am watching your tutorial. I wish I’d seen it three years ago but better later than never. I made a moss stitch blanket for my great granddaughter and struggled as I’m not a natural knitter I prefer crochet. I made mistakes as could never tell if I was knitting in to a knit stitch or a pearl. Your explanation on the way to tell which stitch I’m knitting into is so easy to understand and helpful. I'm just going to jump in. I've knitted on and off for over 40 years but NO EXPERT FOR SURE. I use a manual manual row counter. Works good for me I have a horrible memory due to brain strokes but clicking the counter let's me remember I counted tthe row I'm currently working on. Hope this helps. Happy knitting 🎉🎉❤

How do you track what row you are on? I need a way to track because I looking at the next stitch (is it a purl or a knit) depends on what row you are on
there is no need for that, you know you always start a row with a knit one. if you are in the middle of the work and you have to figure out what to do next i have this advice:the stitch that you have to purl always has a single strand of yarn wrapped around it horizontally. i hope this helps
It is a very visual pattern, so you can tell by the stitches on the needle whether to knit or purl depending on the row.
Otherwise, you can purchase a “clicker” row counter very inexpensively online. Besides, a counter is very handy, if not necessary, for complex row patterns. Happy knitting.
You can get a counter. I use it because I multitask and have to stop often while knitting
I always finish on knit no matter what and since i am always on knit it will be easy to remember good luck
I remember it like this:
Odd numbered rows are ‘the odd ones out’; they behave stubbornly, so you must knit the purls and purl the knits.
Even numbered rows are ‘even mannered’; they work together, so you knit the knits and purl the purls.
Are you facing the right side of the pattern? You’re in an odd numbered row.
Are you facing the wrong side of the pattern? You’re in an even numbered row.

I'm trying to knit a miniature hat (think silly mini clown hat) but I don't know where to start, what pattern to use, etc, what do you recommend? I have a longer round and a couple sets of thin straight needles

You should use cast in all situations. Casted is an improper conjugation that should be avoided. Since cast rhymes with other past tense verbs like passed and gassed, you can use the rhymes as a reminder that it can function as its own past tense conjugation.

Cast is not a conjunction, it is a verb.
As a beginner knitter I find it easier to use a row counter . I got one with an openig that I put a shoelace thru and wear it around my neck. Easier than trying to figure out is this a knit or a Pearl.

Love your videos they have been so helpful! Question - there seems to be an extra step when you purl on this video that I didnt see in the How To Purl video. Can you tell me why?
The only thing that might look like an “extra step” is how she brings the yarn forward or to the front after she has completed a knit stitch (which ends with the yarn in the back). I hope I’ve answered your question correctly. Let me know if I didn’t and I’ll try to help more.
When you’re purling after another purl stitch there is no need to bring the yarn forward because after a purl stitch the yarn will always be in the front.

Sure! Garter stitch and rib stitch make nice borders. But rib stitch will need to be blocked so it stretches out

So. I have a total of 162 stitches. I started k1 and p1. Of the 1st row and I'm on my last stitch but its not p1 its k1. So I'm not sure what I did. I counted the rest of the stitches but they were in order so can anyone point what should I do and help me?

So essentially moss stitch and seed stitch are the same thing. Except for the stitches in the beginning moss has even amount of stitches and seed has odd. Would I be correct?

I am a beginner knitter. Things aren't going as well as I hoped! But I love knitting and want to do better. I know how to knit and purl I made 1 scarf. Can you tell me what yarn and needle size I should be using? I like wooden, thick needles but want to venture onto metal. At this point, I'd like to knit anything-even another scarf. Thanks, Tara
You can use any size yarn you want but obviously smaller yarns for small projects and bigger yarns for big projects. The yarn you buy will usually tell what size you need but if you want a lace look size up

Yes. Most (if not all) stitch patterns need to be adapted to knitting in the round

Yes! Choose a needle size that complements your yarn. Often the yarn label will have a recommended needle size

Hi! You can do a regular slip stitch selvedge on the first stitch of every row. If the first stitch is a knit (like on Row 1 and 2), then slip knitwise. If the first stitch is a purl (like row 3 and 4) then slip purl wise. Good luck!

If you purl the last stitch of row 1 and knit the first stitch of row 2 aren’t you knitting the purls and purling the knits on row 2?
I’ve linked the stitch pattern in the description. This is the pattern for moss stitch:
Row 1 and 2: *K1, P1; repeat from * to end of row
Row 3 and 4: *P1, K1; repeat from * to end of row
Repeat Rows 1-4 for Moss Stitch flat
I am still confused about this - you @@sheepandstitch ended row one on a purl then started row 2 on a knit which would mean knit the purl and purl the knit, however suddenly your knits matched the knits and purls matched the purls? this would only match if there was an uneven number of stitches?
@@chloenelson9544because row 2 is the WS. When you purl on row 1, it's a knit on the back which is where row 2 is starting

Every time i switch the patterns two extra stitches appear on the row. How do i prevent this? Why is it happening

In the U.K. this is 1x1 rib stitch I think
Yeah but every 2 rows you offset the pattern. So it actually forms short ribs that are only 2 rows long and then offset by one.
Your videos are very helpful. I like the “Best Beginner Knit Stitches” series. I do think there is an error in the graphic for Moss Stitch, Row 2. You say (and show) that the stitches of the first two rows should match, but the graphic for Row 2 reads: “Row 1 and 2: *K1,P1 repeat …” I believe what it should say is that Row 2 is the opposite of Row 1-should be *P1,K1 repeat, which would be knitting the knits and purling the purls. (I think.) Thanks for what you do.

Wait how is this different from ribbing?
If you had 10 stitches-k1, p1 across the row. The second row (the previous row last stitch was a p1) and you say repeat the first row. However as you go across the row, you say knit into previous row knit and pearl into previous row pearl. This seems the like two different instructions??

Even though this is a beginner stitch, it is not the veerrry beginning of how to knit.
I'd reccomend looking up how to purl, and knit stitch first since they are super beginner level and are the base of most knitting :)
