I borrowed the Panasonic Lumix S1H from Panny for 10 days. A couple of days after giving it back, I bought one! That's how much of an impact it made on me.
I know this camera is now around 18 months old but pfft. I am sick of buying cameras the minute they are released. It can be too much of a gamble.
In hindsight, I certainly wouldn't have bought the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV on release because I seriously overpaid for that. I still use it for stills but am now looking to sell all my Canon gear and move over to Panasonic completely.
By waiting 18 months before buying the Lumix S1H, I have saved around £1050...enough for a half decent lens!
Anyway, the Panasonic S1H is undoubtedly the finest hybrid camera I could find. The stills quality from the 24mp sensor is superb and the video quality is even better. So good in fact that the S1H is the first, and only at the time of writing, mirrorless video camera to be accepted by Netflix.

Hi Nick, great review on this beast of a hybrid camera. Bought mine during spring of 2020, and I really love the video quality - if only the AF was more reliable (even after latest firmware upgrades).
Looking back as a hobby shooter, I feel that I was widely overrating the 10bit 422 video capabilities, especially the 422 of it - probably, I would prefer the S5 for now.

Indeed the AF is pretty poor but I rarely use it so fine for me. The S5 is superb and easily enough camera for most people. Tech moves on fast and things get better, faster and smaller so quickly now! Thanks for commenting 👍

Hello, I just found your channel/video. Really really superb informative video really helpful!. So I’ve literally just purchased the Panasonic S5 I managed to get it brand new from Amazon UK with the 20mm-60mm kit lens and a second spare battery on prime day for £1180!. I really did want the S1H or the Sony A7S3 but regarding the Sony with a lens, battery and CF express card it would cost me nearly £5,000 more and the S1H with a lens would be nearer to at least £3,500-£4000. My thinking is being a non pro not being paid I realistically would get 5X times better photos & videos from those cameras than the S5. Gordon from camera labs said I got an excellent deal so that’s reassuring to know.

Thanks for your comments MrD. You definitely got a great deal there, well done and enjoy.
I'm looking at getting an S5 at some point, it's a great camera and at the end of the day, you should get as good results as any camera with the S5. It's all down to you 😉
Thanks again and enjoy the S5.

Hey Nick, thanks a lot for this - its a great video for me as I am also a hybrid user and looking to make an upgrade from my GH5 which has served me well for 5 years now. The gh5 is an absolute workhorse for video but as you say, the photography side of my career has suffered because the GH5 can't compete when it comes to stills. So that said, I'm now trying to decide between the S1H and the S1R - I'm a documentary shooter so both photo and video are important to me, but video probably plays a slightly larger role in my work. However Im very attracted by the high-res sensor of the S1R especially as you have all that cropping room/detail to re-shape/manipulate your image afterwards. I'm wondering if I'll be satisfied with the 4K (and newly added 5k) on the S1R or whether I'll be happier to pay the price of less pixels but better video options of the S1H. Would love your thoughts on this, thanks again!

Hi Anthony and thanks for your comment...sums up my thoughts exactly. I still have my trusty GH5 as, like you say, it's a workhorse and superb video quality in such a small camera.
I still use my Canon 5DIV for stills but only because I paid so much for it and its resale value is very low. Superb for stills, crap for 4k video.
The S1H stills are excellent but as you say, only 24mp. It all depends on how much resolution you need for stills. The 5.9/6k video on the S1H comes in really handy for post cropping and the quality is amazing.
I guess in an ideal world, you'd have the S1H for video, the S1R for stills and the GH5 for back up etc.
Just for the hell of it, I've uploaded a comparison of stills shot on the S1H and 5DIV at ISO 12,800. RAW, JPEG from camera and JPEG from RAW file. The S1H is so much cleaner. I think the S1R would be as clean.
It all comes down to video options for you to decide between the S1H abs S1R I guess 🤔

@@NickStubbs Hey Nick thanks for getting back to me so quickly and for providing me with such a comprehensive answer. I also seriously appreciate you sending me this link with samples - a massive help to my decision making. You're right it really does come down to video options at this point, I think the only thing that's making me hesitate with the S1R is that it doesn't offer the same range of widescreen formats (16:9) etc that you would look for in a film/cine camera. But then I've often thought I can always put some modifiers/anamorphic lenses and/or an external recording monitor onto the S1R for when I'm needing that cinematic look for my videos. But like you said ... In an ideal world I'd have a dedicated camera for each. So part of me is thinking to get the S1R for my stills and then maybe in a year or so I can get the S1H which will undoubtedly be cheaper by then. Though, interestingly, someone recommended the S5 to me as a better hybrid camera than the S1H - what are your thoughts on that if any? Thanks again, really appreciate you taking the time.

@@anthony8236 No problem, glad to help. You make some good points there and yes, the S5 is an amazing camera. I looked long and hard at that myself. The cameras are very similar but for me, the differences with the S1H won it over for me.
They were: The main reason was 6k vs 4k video. I like the option to be able to crop in from 5.9 or 6k in post when outputting in 4k or even 1080p. Very handy. The other main wins for me were: The top LCD is superb, I use it a lot! The S5 doesn't have one. The viewfinder (EVF) is 5760 dot (S1H) vs 2360 dot (S5) and the rear LCD is slightly larger and has 26% more resolution. Both great for focusing etc. The S1H has a flash synch port, full size HDMI and illuminated buttons.
However, the S5 is a fair bit cheaper, smaller and has eye tracking focus and webcam function. Very close and tough choice. I actually borrowed an S1H from Panasonic on their "try before you buy" option. That sold it for me, I fell in love with it right away. SO many features. It is bigger but I think that helps when working with more high end clients...it is also Netflix approved. I am shooting stock video with that in mind.
Lastly, the fan. That is superb, especially when working in the sun or for long periods at high resolution. It is quiet too. I recently filmed, non stop, a 34 hour rugby match where the S1H and GH5 were not turned off once and kept recording for the full 34 hours...even in the rain! I love those two cameras.

Anyway, once again it all comes down to the video resolution. Would you use 6k? Such a touch choice...I hate buying new cameras : )
Good luck with it but I am sure you will enjoy and make the most out of either!

You might take a look at the Panasonic S5, pretty much an S1H in a smaller body. Lacks the 6k and All-I recording modes though

Absolutely. I've been looking at it already...a perfect 2nd camera to compliment the S1H. Thanks for that 👍
