Hi Dustin, Happy New Year to you! Great that you took some time to test the firmware upgrade. I installed it only a few days after availability, and I am quite pleased. it is not 100% perfect by now, but with the update I never experienced this crazy "I cannot fina anything to focus on" behavior of my S1H which I ran into with appr. 20-30% of all my AF attempts before. So, much, much better and to some extend reliable when the situation is not too complex. For complex focusing, such as going back and forth between 2 characters or foreground and background, I'd prefer MF for sure.
Great video Dustin, well done! The problem is that the AF sometimes works, sometimes not...So instead of wasting time with more takes, I just prefer to stick with MF and blame myself if I fail (sometimes...ahahahah).
Thanks for your tests. This seems to come down to use case scenarios. I would probably not risk one time interviews to AF on any camera, but if you are handholding a gimbal, you are forced to trust the camera. They have limited the "freak out" behavior but have not eliminated it. That is my big hangup with DFD, it is unsure of itself which shows more than just missing and adjusting. My GH5 is decent so I would expect the S-series to be a real upgrade. Clearly the Sonys and Canons are better but the Pannys are not far behind for a lot of real world uses.
Thanks for the comparison! And not sure if you were shooting in 24, 30 or 60 fps. But it's been proven time and again that higher frame rate helps with the dfd

Since your video is a little older, just wondering if you have tried AF tests recently? Make sure you keep lighting consistent in these tests. A subject in strong sunlight vs open skylight is going to give different results. Whether the background is properly lit or not, you will see large differences based on the key hitting your subject. I have done numerous in depth tests on the C200, and the intensity/angle of light hitting the face can make a profound difference in the camera's ability to hold it. Given that you have a shiny new studio space, I'd love to see these kinds of A/B tests done in controlled conditions where other variables can't muddy the results. I understand that results could of been affected given the different lighting scenarios (I forgot how fast the sun goes down in the winter), but I disagree for these tests and highly doubt it was enough to dramatically alter the tests. I never understood people that use autofocus. I don't trust a camera to pick the things I wanna focus on, especially rack focus.
It's just a tool. Useful in certain scenarios and different shooting styles
@@DustinArmstrongPro I know, but it seems like a LOT (too many IMO) make it a make-or-break-it deal on a camera. Then again I do mostly narrative work and I want full control over the focus and not a camera that focus wanders.
Panasonic manual focus mode is good for video recording. Auto focus is useless.
lol where are you?
I’m right here
My head literally fell of during this vid and its ur fault 😠😠😠😠😠😠😠
Only 4 other limbs left and you won’t have to worry anymore!
news flash...no one buys an S1H todo vlogging.
No way I'm every going with the S1H. No way. Bad, very bad AF.
If you need autofocus to make your workflow easier, definitely wouldn’t recommend the S1H
