    Hi Dustin, Happy New Year to you!
    Great that you took some time to test the firmware upgrade. I installed it only a few days after availability, and I am quite pleased. it is not 100% perfect by now, but with the update I never experienced this crazy "I cannot fina anything to focus on" behavior of my S1H which I ran into with appr. 20-30% of all my AF attempts before. So, much, much better and to some extend reliable when the situation is not too complex. For complex focusing, such as going back and forth between 2 characters or foreground and background, I'd prefer MF for sure.

    Great video Dustin, well done!
    The problem is that the AF sometimes works, sometimes not...So instead of wasting time with more takes, I just prefer to stick with MF and blame myself if I fail (sometimes...ahahahah).

    Thanks for your tests. This seems to come down to use case scenarios. I would probably not risk one time interviews to AF on any camera, but if you are handholding a gimbal, you are forced to trust the camera. They have limited the "freak out" behavior but have not eliminated it. That is my big hangup with DFD, it is unsure of itself which shows more than just missing and adjusting. My GH5 is decent so I would expect the S-series to be a real upgrade. Clearly the Sonys and Canons are better but the Pannys are not far behind for a lot of real world uses.

    I have a s5. I think what u missed is comparing different crops, FPS and resolution. The less “work” the camera does, it gets better. For example, shooting in apsc, 24fps and 1080p the af is really good. Vice versa, shooting in full frame mode and bigger resolution and more frame rates will slow down the camera

    • @DustinArmstrongPro
      @DustinArmstrongPro  3 года назад

      Good tip. Next time I'll dive more in depth on those kind of tests.

    • @slows728
      @slows728 3 года назад

      Bigger resolution will slow down the camera AF, but not high frame rate, it's the opposite. AF will be better with 60fps than 30fps and 30 fps will be better than 24fps. You will get the worse AF with 4K 24fps.

    • @DustinArmstrongPro
      @DustinArmstrongPro  3 года назад +1

      @@slows728 I get there are times you'll use the camera to shoot at 1080p since people don't always need higher resolutions. But to me it's irrelevant that the autofocus is better at 1080p since you wouldn't buy this camera just to shoot in 1080p. It has WAY more to offer and if you buy it and only shoot at 1080p just to get a little bit better AF, I feel like you're throwing away money. Just my opinion though

    Great video man. I have watched all of your AF videos several times and they have been very helpful. I recently picked up the S1. i finally got a native S Pro lens(24-70 F2.8). Since your video is a little older, just wondering if you have tried AF tests recently? I just did some with the Vers. 2.1 update and was pleasantly surprised at how well the S1 performed using a native L-mount lens. I tested using default settings 0/0 at 6K open gate 24p, 5.9k, C4k 24,60p and noticed very good performance with NO Pulsing. I will test the lens on the Sigma fp next.

    Sorry if the answer is embedded below, but what specific AF settings were you using on the S1H (S vs C; human/animal detect, tracking, 225-area, zone, 1-area, 1-area+). I can also vouch for the AF sensitivity and speed settings. Even on V1.1 settings of 0 & 0 are optimum to reduce focus shifting. Despite it all, using Manual focus is the most predictable - MF, the right F-stop and just tapping the AF-ON button works great.

Your video was an excellent presentation, how hard Panasonic tries they cannot make their camera's tracking video AF usable. I am really sorry, since in every other respect the S1H would be a dream camera. Make sure you keep lighting consistent in these tests. A subject in strong sunlight vs open skylight is going to give different results. Whether the background is properly lit or not, you will see large differences based on the key hitting your subject. I have done numerous in depth tests on the C200, and the intensity/angle of light hitting the face can make a profound difference in the camera's ability to hold it. Given that you have a shiny new studio space, I'd love to see these kinds of A/B tests done in controlled conditions where other variables can't muddy the results.
    Nonetheless, thank you for the helpful examples and neutral commentary. I like your talking head lighting, too. So many youtubers go needlessly moody (presumably just to flex), even though it doesn't fit the content at all. Cheers!

    • @DustinArmstrongPro
      @DustinArmstrongPro  3 года назад

      I understand that results could of been affected given the different lighting scenarios (I forgot how fast the sun goes down in the winter), but I disagree for these tests and highly doubt it was enough to dramatically alter the tests. There were shots that performed essentially the same on both firmwares. If the old AF firmware consistently was way worse than the post firmware updates I may agree. There’s just not enough consistency to conclude that. That’s also the C200 AF a completely different brand, camera, and technology.
      Maybe they just like moody lighting? Glad you liked the lighting though and appreciate the support 🙏

    • @davidnaida6531
      @davidnaida6531 3 года назад

      @@DustinArmstrongPro I have found subject lighting to make a big difference in AF performance in every DSLM I've ever used (which is most of them) back to the GH3. The S1H's DFD technology doesn't fundamentally differ from any other CAF system, so I can't imagine why it would be an exception.
      That said, I do agree that the update is still a small step at best.

    The auto focus issue could not be mainly about progmramming/firmware but mainly about hardware/processing power. The S5 is great when in APS-C mode. It could be that the S5 is just trying to be a full frame but just not there yet. Auto focus should not be secondary, it should always be one of the primary features. Panasonic might need to up their game on the processing department, else it will just end up as a deal braker.

    • @restlake
      @restlake 3 года назад

      Yea on the S5 at least it tracks a single face the same whether you click or don’t click when the box is visible. It’s primarily to prioritize one face over another when there are multiple in a scene. It might make the AF “more confident” with a single face since it may try to jump off if you don’t confirm the target but would have to do some testing to confirm
