Used an S1H kindly provided by Panasonic to shoot some scenic footage for TELESERENITY.com. It's a beastly camera but a superb one thanks to its versatility and better than you know who ergonomics and usability. Tack sharp lifelike video footage, just what we need. Once lockdown is over, we're hoping to go shoot more relaxing footage. We don't of course use AF for our work, being TELESERENITY forbids zooming and focus changing in order not to disrupt the calm, so cannot judge on that controversial issue that SXXY do better. Either way, the S1 and S1H deserve more coverage by the tech press who seem obsessed with the other brands. For me, it's all about realistic colour out of camera, and Panasonic do this best.
Actually, the S1H can overheat - as it did for me, in 90 degree F weather, in the sun, after 35 minutes. Panasonic is looking into this, and the rep told me that it has a limit of 104 degree F for recording. Fan or not, it can still overheat.
Funny how Jordan has to stand so far down the bank of that creek to almost be at eye level with you Chris hahahahaha. Or were you planning on trying to push Jordan into that creek?
Chris's mic had a phase error. I find the way to avoid that is to turn off Jordon's mic in editing. I love my S5 because it is smaller and lighter. Also the Micro HDMI cable breaks instead of the motherboard on the camera when the cable is bent. That happened to me on the GH5.
Thanks for this review, as I've been contemplating the S1, but keep gravitating towards the S1H. Do either/both of these have the full V-log, or do they have V-log L (light)?
They're basically identical except: - S5 has anti-aliasing filter (softer but with less moiré); S1 does not (slightly sharper image but more moiré) - S1 is bigger and heavier; S5 might be more thermally constrained (prone to overheating) as a result of being smaller and lighter - S5 has a fully articulating screen; S1 screen just tilts up and down - S1 has secure full-size HDMI port; S5 has flimsy micro HDMI port
@@danieldougan269 Adding to the list - S1 has higher res EVF (40% more px) - S1 IBIS is rated 1 full stop stronger - S1 with CFex card vs SD UHS-I - S5 has dedicated video/photo dial and other minor control differences.
Aay, Chris, my S1H is a beast! I just wish there was an L mount camera with PDAF, so I can make better use of all my glass (and no, the Sigma fp L with no mechanical shutter nor IBIS, but heaps of rolling shutter, doesn't count!!!)
It does make me nervous to invest in l mount with that contrast based autofocus. Even with all the firmware upgrades, I don’t rely on the autofocus for video...
I’ve been using the S1H for weddings. I love knowing I can rely on it in hot Florida weather lol. I may get an s1 as a b cam over say an s5 because it uses the same batteries as the s1h.
@@Rashadmcka hmm, in the hottest scenario, we were under a gigantic silk, but it was exceptionally hot out. I mean, we were all cooking, even under the silk. I could feel the back of the camera was quite hot, but it wasn't overheating. It was easily 95-105 Fahrenheit that week.
S1 (Fw 2.0) has no frame guides and blanking for cinematic aspect ratios which the S5 has ( I assume the S1H has?) and still no way to assign APS-C to a fn button like you can on the S5.
Anyone ever wonder why they don't just make their own channel? Correct me if I'm wrong but the majority come here for Chris and Jordan not DPReview. Where they go we will follow.
Okay first off, thanks to you guys for ALWAYS informing us about which camera was used to record the episode. The S1H looks absolutely great---but still weighs a TON...too much, IMO, for run and gun video in a Texas summer. But one thing you guys ALWAYS omit is talking about focus assist features on third party non-electronic lenses for us manual video shooters. Those features always have been decent (not great, but decent) on the S1H...but the S1--not so much. The peaking on the S1, for instance, is fine for setting focus, but hit record and the peaking all but vanishes. Yes, it's better in natural or CineD, but shooting V-Log you're SoL. (Not a real problem on the S5, OR the GH5/GH5S, the G9, the G85---you know the drill. At present, give me an S5 with a miniHDMI and, unlike Gerald, I'm actually Done.) It is almost impossible to track a subject using the peaking on the S1. As good as the S1 was the severe paucity of the peaking was deal breaker for me. To compound that, the diopter of the S1 only goes to +3.5----not +4! (Same story with the S1H). Strangely enough, the diopter is fine on the S5---crazy, right?!? They give you an ESSENTIAL feature on a $2000.00 camera, and then Cripple Hammer it on a $4000.00 one?!? Camera companies! You can't understand what they do and why, but you can't shoot them! The diopter craziness is not likely to change, but I had a fix for that. But it would be wonderful if it were improved. But my question is a SIMPLE one--- with a SIMPLE answer I hope you'll have the kindness to supply. To wit: did Panasonic fix the Peaking on the S1 so it does not virtually disappear the moment you hit record?!? Beyond that, great review and your grading looks terrific. These are great cameras. I just wish they had not contracted that horrible virus before they made them....Covid??? Of course not. Canon Cripplehammeritis.

Regarding time code, im quite sure I heard some Panasonic guys say that it was partially available on the S1. That it could send but not receive. Or it may have been the opposite.
Why? Look at the sales figures. People would rather have a 12MP camera that has mushy poor colors, than a camera that has great DR and 6k. You know why? Autofocus. Panasonic hybrids will never be widely adopted as long as Sony and Canon offer similar features with PDAF.
@@kamsensei6361 The colours of theFX3/A7S3 are nor mushy at all. On the photography side they are limited to 12mp, which is perfect as long as you don't print posters above A2 paper. Absolute No1 reason to get the S1 over the S5. The tilt screen. The side hinged flippy, floppy, flappy, take forever, obstructive and conspicuous rear LCD was designed by the devil in hell.

Yes, you can literally go to panasonic’s website and look at the list the firmware update brings Good luck with your camera if you’re too lazy to read up on it 🤡
It's a shame that the fully articulating screen that also tilts up is not on the S1. I know a lot of wedding photographers who would prefer to not have the articulating screen. I'm the type of person who likes to do landscape photography using an articulating screen because if I want a unique shot from the ground I don't have to lie down. Lol
Fuji used to be great at updates, sadly since the T3 that’s not the case. Maybe Panasonic are realising the importance of keeping people in your ecosystem, especially since a lot of bank accounts aren’t in the best of health after the last year.
So far no comment from DP review about the focus peaking of then S1. Typical. Don't they read valid comments?---and this IS a valid comment in the form of a question: have they corrected the focus peaking issue of the S1 along with the other improvements? Crickets.
@@RandomMotoThings The minute you hit record the focus peaking all but vanishes---impossible to see in most cases, and impossible to use for tracking MOVING subjects. In addition, there is no ability to punch in to the image while recording. Basically, if you're shooting manual focus on the S1 as soon as you hit record you're shooting bind---the amazing VANISHING focus peaking totally cripples you to being able to effectively pull focus. There's more, but this is a deal breaker for me.
Guys why you dint mention about 180 dagree shutter engle is it this same like in S1H and sharpness setting are you able setuo this by your self or it is fixed?
I think it is good enough for interview situations now, but not at the level needed for run and gun/weddings. But for interviews, I've used it extensively with no issues.
The one thing, which I suppose everybody already knows, the thing that ruins both of these cameras is the auto focus is complete crap! And until Panasonic fixes that… I have no use for their cameras. With the new Sony cameras you don’t even have to think about focusing it’s so extraordinary.
Autofocus is not complete crap. Far from it. With the newest firmware it's actually very good. You are watching too many videos or reading too many "reviews" from online armchair experts and simply echoing what you are reading. These "experts" are not filmmakers. The only content these experts create is "reviews" with the sole purpose of creating controversy and generating discussions. Post a video shot that you missed because the AF was 'complete crap'. I bet there isn't any. PS -- not saying that you are lying. Yes on paper Panasonic many not have the fastest AF but in real world shooting there will almost never be a scenario where a scene was lost due to Panasonic's 'crap AF' (assuming you were using native Panasonic lenses not another brand with adapter)

@@2424rocket You're welcome. I have owned the S1 since it came out two years ago. I came from the Canon 5D and 7D series cameras and the difference in picture/video quality is night and day ! I was especially surprised by still image quality. I knew Panasonic was great for video (GH4, GH5 ) so I expected video to look much better than the Canon DSLR's which it did. However what I was not expecting was the stark difference in still picture quality. The Lumix stills were teeming with fine detail that I never gotten out of the Canons (jpeg or raw). As for AF , with the original firmware at release I will say there was occasional hesitation - as if the camera couldn't make up its mind what to focus on. With the new firmwares all that is gone. If you are using native Panasonic lenses, still image AF is instantaneous. Video focus is very good too after the last two firmware updates although I can't give a head to head comparison with the Sony's since I have never used one.
Loving the braw with the video assist 12g though. It's like having a blackmagic with IBIS. So much control in Resolve. Was about to sell my S1H, but not for a while now!
Yes, hey actually included it, believe it or not! But it doesn't have the synchro scan feature, although you can get over that by selecting a different shutter speed, but it doesn't work as well... Two different feature I know, but I thought I'd include that one as the GH5 has it and I kind of miss it.
No. These are two very different concepts. All-I compression means the camera records the full image with each frame. This is in contrast to IPB that only records the part of the image that moved since the previous frame. All-I is easier for your computer to edit, but the files are larger. Also, All-I prevents motion issues in video that might cause an image to break up when there's a lot of movement. RAW is about recording more color information, much like shooting RAW in photography, but you have to use an external recorder in most cases. Typical internal recording is 8-bit or 10-bit, but ProRes RAW and Blackmagic RAW are 12-bit codecs. It just gives more flexibility for color grading. For the best possible image (theoretically at least), you would want RAW and All-I at the same time.
the V-log upgrade also gives you 4:2:2 over HDMI, .mov files for HD recording. If you had to fall back on the camera files for sound, having a slight hickup when it moves from one .mp4 to the next is not fun to deal with. That alone was worth the price of admission. Nowadays, camera companies run specials where they give you the vlog if you are buying the S1 new.
Who gives a flying f* about netflix, if your stuff is good you it doesn't matter and if it's bad noone's gonna buy it because it's "NetFlix approved", just saying!
Could Panasonic change the AF system on their L-series cameras to something like the Dual Pixel AF through an update? Or would an upgrade like that require different hardware and would just have to be released in future cameras?
@@andersistbesser interesting to know, maybe they already had plans to add it and had designed the sensor with that in mind. I'll look into it, if my panasonic s5 can get phase detect in future that'd be dope.
Great for S1 users but for us S1H users this is very annoying. I hope the S1H is going to get a higher quality internal codec in the 5.9K mode? Double the bit rate please Panasonic, the camera can handle it! I'm not buying the Video Assist when I have the Ninja V. Either Atomos needs to add in BRAW or Davinci Resolve needs to get it's act together and let us import ProRes RAW. I have no idea what this obsession is with RAW video? If you can't expose and choose the correct white balance in camera, then you shouldn't be using cameras of this quality! Throw us S1H users a bone Panasonic, gives us a higher quality 5.9K internal codec that makes the S1H stand out from the crowd again like it did originally.
@@redbit6182 Big deal! Does a piece of glass and a small fan nearly double the price of the camera? Everything else is software and the other cameras will most probably get those features further down the line. I bought the S1H for the 5.9K and superb build quality. Now I could get those features for nearly half the price. I understand that Panasonic needs to sell cameras because most of the morons today will only buy Canon or Sony due to the over rated and un-cinematic auto-focus, but don't piss off your clientele by adding the key feature to cameras that cost a lot less.
@@JasonBagherian I’m sorry you are upset, but if a “piece of glass” and many pro features can improve your workflow, than yes, I think a higher price is justified
@@redbit6182 The S1 has time code now too. Don't know if it has all the time code features of the S1H though, probably not, but just having it is a huge difference
@@machannel8746 True, the S1 can add timecode as metadata on internal recorded file as well as output it over HDMI, so it can start the recording on external device like the Ninja V. But, the S1H can input/output a timecode signal through the flash port with a bnc cable, this allow the camera to be easily integrated on a set with multiple cameras and audio recorders as an A or B cam. Can you do an S1 vs S5 comparison?? I need to know the weight difference in noct!
S1: 1/2 Noct
S5: 1/3 Noct
When you account for the 200$ software upgrade key (which is needed to take advantage of the new firmware of the S1) and the 800$+ for the Atomos Ninja V ( that has loud fan noise) + 100$ for a Cage + (I don't know what else, maybe a handle etc) the price difference between S1H and the S1 with extras is not so much.
The S1 is AMAZING if you don't the swivel screen for self recording and if you don't need more than 15 minutes for 6K recording.
If you need those things you can get the S1H and you can have a more compact setup, the best functioning tilt and sivel screen, ALL-I, bigger top screen, the Low Pass Filter and the HFR High Frame Rate 48p/100p/120p in FHD.
I will be getting the S5 because I am a newbie, I need the swivel screen and I found an amazing deal. 2000 Euro for the Body, 20-60mm Kit lens AND 35mm f/1.8 Panasonic lens
Ah nice to see you covering the new firmware, me and my 8 year old reviewed it to... with somewhat less grace and professionalism
Wow your 8 year old is a genius ! That was actually pretty funny to
Been a fan since your Camera Store days, thanks for your insights here. Would be nice to see reviews of adjunct equipment (i.e. HDR monitors, recorders, mics, audio, media, storage, etc.)...maybe time for a, um, DVReview side channel?
What I love the most in the last firmware update of the S1 is that now I can trigger my Atomos Ninja V using time code.
Which means that I can use my 5€ remote control plugged into my S1 and launch the record both in the S1 and in the Ninja SSD.
Vlog in the S1 and Vlog with LUT applied in the SSD. Yeah because I edit all my videos only with iMovie on my Mac. Not yet went to color grading nor invested into Final Cut Pro. For my very low level as youtuber (consider subscribe I would be so glad ;) ) I didn’t go further than iMovie !!!
Wish I had an s1H for my film and media studies
whoa, this update rock! thanks for the vids guys!
So how long do you think until Panasonic unlocks BRAW on the S1? I hope soon.
I believe we would like to see your opinion on where is the S5's place regarding to all the changes
The s1 is just around 1000 bucks used in very good condition - what a bargain indeed !!
Actually, the S1H can overheat - as it did for me, in 90 degree F weather, in the sun, after 35 minutes. Panasonic is looking into this, and the rep told me that it has a limit of 104 degree F for recording. Fan or not, it can still overheat.
I wish you guys could make a video on how to grade the Braw from the Lumix/ BM assist
Jordan: "sorry, your windscreen is too distracting"
I have to start using that excuse
Funny how Jordan has to stand so far down the bank of that creek to almost be at eye level with you Chris hahahahaha. Or were you planning on trying to push Jordan into that creek?
Chris's mic had a phase error. I find the way to avoid that is to turn off Jordon's mic in editing. I love my S5 because it is smaller and lighter. Also the Micro HDMI cable breaks instead of the motherboard on the camera when the cable is bent. That happened to me on the GH5.
That last part about the Micro HDMI cable advantage is something I hadn't considered!
Thanks for this review, as I've been contemplating the S1, but keep gravitating towards the S1H. Do either/both of these have the full V-log, or do they have V-log L (light)?
Full version for both.
would like to see S5 vs S1 with new firmware
They're basically identical except:
- S5 has anti-aliasing filter (softer but with less moiré); S1 does not (slightly sharper image but more moiré)
- S1 is bigger and heavier; S5 might be more thermally constrained (prone to overheating) as a result of being smaller and lighter
- S5 has a fully articulating screen; S1 screen just tilts up and down
- S1 has secure full-size HDMI port; S5 has flimsy micro HDMI port
@@danieldougan269 Adding to the list
- S1 has higher res EVF (40% more px)
- S1 IBIS is rated 1 full stop stronger
- S1 with CFex card vs SD UHS-I
- S5 has dedicated video/photo dial and other minor control differences.
@@danieldougan269 smh the s5 does not have a anti-aliasing filter
I have the S1h and the S1 as a b cam and it is a perfect combo! The s5 is a good camera it don't like the mini HDMI port
I've had the S1 since launch, shot in some hot conditions and never had an overheat in 4K.
@@nickharris5231 interesting! just out of curiosity, was 25+ minutes without stopping in sun (about 90F) ? If so, another reason to consider it! :)
@@nickharris5231 Thanks for the insight!
S1 (Fw 2.0) has no frame guides and blanking for cinematic aspect ratios which the S5 has ( I assume the S1H has?) and still no way to assign APS-C to a fn button like you can on the S5.
I find this annoying too
Anyone ever wonder why they don't just make their own channel? Correct me if I'm wrong but the majority come here for Chris and Jordan not DPReview. Where they go we will follow.
And don't get me wrong I love the DPReview website and check there for reviews all the time but as far as videos this is all they have going for them.
I had the X-H2s in my shopping kart as soon it got released. Now, with the S1's updates, I am torn.
Has the AF got updated on the S1 too?
Yes, now is the same as s5.
however it lags behind the competition
At present, give me an S5 with a miniHDMI and, unlike Gerald, I'm actually Done.)
It is almost impossible to track a subject using the peaking on the S1.
Hi William, I'd be curious to learn more about your diopter fix, my 2 x S1's adjust just shy of where my eye needs them. -Jim

@@avarmadillo Hi William, thanks for the heads-up on the 37mm diopters, time to do some shopping. Too bad Panasonic does not either make the diopter adjustment more accommodating or offer slip-on auxiliary lenses ala Canon, etc.. Thanks, kind sir! -Jim
Liking those film posters. Jordan has great film taste
I mean he wears a Criterion shirt all the time
@@aalvarez10 good point
A hand full of days away from 2022, and still the peaking of the S1 is crippled the moment you being to record video.
Regarding time code, im quite sure I heard some Panasonic guys say that it was partially available on the S1. That it could send but not receive. Or it may have been the opposite.
I dont understand why they dont give the s1r the same video specs the s1 has. It would be the perfect cam for me.
Okay so, panasonic is the new king of firmware since Fuji doesn´t give a f anymore?
Why would they, add a new film simulation and call it a new camera xD
They're playing that game, yes...
I wonder where there's other places are ...all right Chris we see you
The S1 looks to have the same boost strategy like G9...
With this S1H firmware Panasonic forces Sony to come up with a firmware upgrade for the FX3 (and A7SIII)
But it's true what you say, the only reason most stay with Sony or Canon (despite all the pro's of Panasonic) are features like phase detect AF/ eye AF /tap to track focus. When Panasonic offers those features I'll go back to Panasonic
S1h is hands down the best video camera on the market

Absolute No1 reason to get the S1 over the S5. The tilt screen.
The side hinged flippy, floppy, flappy, take forever, obstructive and conspicuous rear LCD was designed by the devil in hell.

Yes, S1 has anamorphic settings

Yes, you can literally go to panasonic’s website and look at the list the firmware update brings
Good luck with your camera if you’re too lazy to read up on it 🤡

Has the S1H given you any problems recording in 6k internal with SDCX cards?
It's a shame that the fully articulating screen that also tilts up is not on the S1. I know a lot of wedding photographers who would prefer to not have the articulating screen. I'm the type of person who likes to do landscape photography using an articulating screen because if I want a unique shot from the ground I don't have to lie down. Lol
I prefer the tilting one 🤟🏻
Fuji used to be great at updates, sadly since the T3 that’s not the case. Maybe Panasonic are realising the importance of keeping people in your ecosystem, especially since a lot of bank accounts aren’t in the best of health after the last year.

what do you guys think about the ProRes Raw workflow using Assimilate Scratch in combination with DaVinci Resolve?
How did you get the screen @3:21? I would like to have something like that setup
So far no comment from DP review about the focus peaking of then S1.
Typical. Don't they read valid comments?---and this IS a valid comment in the form of a question: have they corrected the focus peaking issue of the S1 along with the other improvements?
Crickets.
What issue does it have with focus leaking if you don’t mind me asking?
@@RandomMotoThings The minute you hit record the focus peaking all but vanishes---impossible to see in most cases, and impossible to use for tracking MOVING subjects. In addition, there is no ability to punch in to the image while recording. Basically, if you're shooting manual focus on the S1 as soon as you hit record you're shooting bind---the amazing VANISHING focus peaking totally cripples you to being able to effectively pull focus. There's more, but this is a deal breaker for me.
No improvement in auto focus with this firmware update?

Also, no Synchro Scan on S1, this has been restrictive to me a few times, especially shooting in slow-mo with dodgy room lighting =(
I thought they improved the AF, I know that contrast detection isn't much to brag about, but I was curious to see if it did improved somewhat.
I think it is good enough for interview situations now, but not at the level needed for run and gun/weddings. But for interviews, I've used it extensively with no issues.

You missed the 1080 120p 10bit....

White hairs in your moustache 🤣🤣🤣
I feel your pain man!
good one!
I would love to be a s1 user but i use davinci resolve and i want to use raw.
As an S1H user I hope we get more update.
Loving the braw with the video assist 12g though. It's like having a blackmagic with IBIS. So much control in Resolve. Was about to sell my S1H, but not for a while now!
Does the S1 now have shutter angle? Thanks
Yes, hey actually included it, believe it or not! But it doesn't have the synchro scan feature, although you can get over that by selecting a different shutter speed, but it doesn't work as well... Two different feature I know, but I thought I'd include that one as the GH5 has it and I kind of miss it.
Is All-intra the same thing as "Raw"?
If this is a 24MP camera presumably it's 6000 by 4000 right? So why does it do 5.9k instead of just going all the way to 6k? Can anyone tell me?
it can record 6k open gate = 3:2 aspect and 5.9k = 16:9 aspect, also 5.4k 3:2 is supported
Is this 24fps 24p or 23.98?
Not a single word about the 200$ V-Log upgrade you "have" to buy to use the 6K recording.
If you do not have v-log then trust me - you also not need a new update
the V-log upgrade also gives you 4:2:2 over HDMI, .mov files for HD recording. If you had to fall back on the camera files for sound, having a slight hickup when it moves from one .mp4 to the next is not fun to deal with. That alone was worth the price of admission. Nowadays, camera companies run specials where they give you the vlog if you are buying the S1 new.
S1H is also Netflix-Certified.
Which doesn't really matter unless Netflix is producing your show, and if they are you're likely using a more expensive A-camera

Could Panasonic change the AF system on their L-series cameras to something like the Dual Pixel AF through an update? Or would an upgrade like that require different hardware and would just have to be released in future cameras?
That's related to the physical sensor and a hardware thing. Probably have to wait for a new camera if they decide to do it.

LPF on the sensor, real 24fps, no recording time limit, better exposing tools, HFR modes, time code, ... I think the S1H is on another league
It's a substantial difference. Anyway, don't get me wrong, I think the S1 is, now, the best hybrid camera you can pick.
