In my humble opinion this would not be a true modern solution to the root of this problem. You would have yet another mode, and would have to be switching between them depending on the circumstance. I believe that for most people the priority of eye->head->body is how they would do it themselves, so the real problem here is that the eye detection is easily fooled. The next camera needs an AI assisted subject tracking, so that it can figure out the eye even when it's on the side of the face or partially covered face, etc. Then it would not prioritize the hand as in this video.
@@milosjakovljevic2602 While it's true that AI assisted subject tracking would be great to have as an ''option'' (we've been asking for it for a while in fact), it wouldn't be the ideal solution for filmmakers because a filmmaker need ''control'' (not rely on AI). No matter how modern you want to be, narrative filmmaking will always require control (especially if you have paid actors on the shoot, no matter how low budget your project is). There's absolutely nothing wrong with switching Focus Mode. Basically, an AF system is just like a sports car.. You need to learn how to ''pilot'' it in order to get the best out of it, and once you get used to it, you cna do it very quickly/efficiently. AF for a filmmaker isn't just a point and shoot type of thing.. but rather an automatic way of pulling focus. You still need to control everything if you want particular ''cinematic'' results. By having an EYE ONLY mode, you could ''choose'' to set it that way so you know for sure that nothing but ''eyes'' would trigger the system (AI wouldn't ''ensure'' anything, plus it doesn't know what YOU want to do to tell YOUR story). In fact, even AF-C itself needs to be controlled manually if you want to achieve cinematic results. In a movie, when an actor is relatively static, but still moves a bit.. the focus puller is not tracking every tiny movement.. otherwise you would see the background pulse/bokeh balls constantly resizing back and forth.. and it would be crazy distracting/not cinematic at all. Instead, they usually keep some DOF headroom where the talent can move a bit without appearing noticeably out of focus... and then they will track some larger movements by slowly/smoothly transitionning (something that won't be distracting, but pleasing when telling a story). So my personnal approach with AF-C is to use the AF-Lock function. I assigned it to the AF-ON button in ''Press and Hold'' mode, so it unlocks and start focusing again as soon as I release the button). This is your best friend. That way, you can choose your Focus Mode/Subject Detection (for instance, Human Detection Eye/Face/Body), then you can let your camera find the focus point automatically, and then you press and hold AF-LOCK so it won't track anymore. When my talent is about to make a larger movement, I can then release the AF-LOCK button and control camera movement instead of pulling focus manually. BUT, I'm always ready to press and hold AF-LOCK again. So we definitely need more and more subject detection modes. In fact, we're unconsciously thinking our modern photo lenses are too clinical and not cinematic enough because they're always in perfect focus. Cinema lenses do have some special character and a bit more 3D pop, but a lot of the look and feel is also because of soft focus / static focus while there are still some motions happening. It instantly looks smoother and more... well, ''cinematic''. What would be great is a way to assign particular AF modes/Subject Detection to Fn buttons, so we can switch mode with a single press of a button during a camera move. I would see myself using that quite a lot.

Checked the new firmware and loving every-bit of it, it even fixed the bug of JPGs getting corrupt when mobile app is connected and geotagging is turnedon. Only 2 points I want Lumix developer team reads though: (1) The new resolution in MP4 lite needs to be added in other file formats as well. We get full 6K sensor read out in open gate but at resolution of 4K. This was we will be able to get 422 files as well in open gate which not possible right now. Add this resolution in same 3:2 ration S&O as well. (2) Old Lumix Sync app had option of using smartphone in landscape mode so that we had bigger display area of the camera preview in camera control mode. This doesn't seem to be available in the Lumix Lab app right now and we get very small preview on the large mobile screen.

Hey Dustin! (and anyone else who wants to chime in ;) So I have a question about shooting Vlog and/or Real Time Lut (Vlog based) on the S5II. Since the base ISO gets bumped up to 640 instead of 100 like it is in the natural profile, I'm having difficulty getting the right exposure in harsh light while still keeping my lens wide open. I have a 1-9 stop nd filter and can't cut out enough light to expose properly. Any tips? Is there something I'm missing? Variable ND's over 9 stops seem pretty uncommon, so I'm wondering how people like you or other Vlog shooters get shallow depth of field in bright light while keeping a well exposed image. Thanks!
@DustinArmstrongPro Thanks for keeping us up to date with the latest from Lumix. I love my camera even more now. I'm glad you pointed out the need for eye only mode. Let's hope a future firmware update will fix the issue. Great job!
Awesome update. Did LUMIX allow Bluetooth connectivity in the LUMIX Lab App to connect to and control multiple Cameras for us that have multiple bodies for event shooting? This would be the ultimate update !!
The Eye only mode is missing for sure. Had lots of interviews where the camera decided to track the hand instead. Eventially went back to manual focus again. Apart from that, great update, especially the extra frame markers.
Someone in the comments said to change to the eye/face in animal mode and it'll still track a human eye. I did a few brief tests and it works🤯 video coming soon that's going to test this more in depth
Great video man! Just got the s5iix on sale and have been fiddling around with it. I primarily shoot basketball content so I have a lot of moving parts. What would be a good autofocus setup for that scenario?
Sick but confused over the hybrid zoom, seems like it's a digital zoom, but does it include crop sensor zooming and some funky AI thing? "not losing too much quality" while shooting in 4K for clients is a lil spooky. Awesome that they push their hardware like this though! Doesn't happen much with the other brands. Thanks man, good video
You shouldn’t really lose detail, it is not really a digital zoom. You have 6000x4000 pixels, and if you only need to use 3840x2160, you can crop in on the sensor and get exactly the pixels you need. that is why HZ doesn’t work in 6k, you need all the pixels to deliver a 6k image. If you start with 3840x2160 and then crop in on that and still deliver 3840x2160, you obviously cannot have as much detail. That is digital zoom. You could already kind of do this by switching to APS-C crop or Pixel-by-pixel (basically only use the pixels you need for the delivery format). You do lose out on downsampling, so maybe a slight loss in quality, but not at all like what people think of when they think of digital zoom.
@ yes, even before this I think you could do it, in fact if you use hybrid zoom they have an option where you can see the actual zoom plus the crop factor, or you can see the “effective zoom” So it would show 85mm * 1.6 or just show 135mm, I have an 85mm lens as well so i will give it a try as well It’s funny because everyone typically complains about the crop when we are talking about 4k 60fps which has an APS-C crop (meaning that your field of view changes when you change your frame rate)…because it is more “zoomed in”
@@iamzr81 just tested it and yeah, 85mm becomes 132mm with the 1.6x crop... I think that is the same thing (with a different UI) as just setting the "Image Area of Video" to Pixel by Pixel which means that you are not blurring pixels, you just are using the pixels needed for the mode you are in.
My understanding is that hybrid zoom does not just crop in on the sensor as you put it. That would reduce the resolution. Instead it's using a smaller portion of the sensor without a loss of resolution, essentially converting to a crop sensor camera. So it maintains full 4K res as your zoom . Let me know if I am understanding this correctly. I heard this on another video.
@@dan9736 That is extremely disappointing. The 1080p slowmo in full frame limitation wasn’t disclosed at the release of the camera and I bought it believing it would be have the functionality. I’ve been holding out buying a lens to deal with the issue and was hoping I wouldn’t have to. Not happy about that, Lumix. 😐
@@ryszardzokowski812 can you expand on this? 100p looks like 50p? Is that true they changed readout? Like faster processing or different sensor? Is it higher or lower quality? Where did you hear this? Thanks

I found three bugs in the firmware of the Gh7 camera. 1) The recording level indicator "freezes" when I try to make the built-in microphone louder or quieter. If I use an external microphone, the indicator works fine. 2) When using the "LOCK" switch on, the "DISP" button remains locked all the time, even if the settings are not to lock it. 3) At 50 fps, 4k, 10 bit, Mov, the sound signal about the start of recording and about the end sometimes sounds incorrectly. Thank you. Best regards!
Whaaaaaaaa can't believe I never thought of that actually because when I'm in human detect it'll track my huskies face sometimes probably because his eyes look more human like. Imma do some tests tomorrow and if it works 100% making a video on it and giving you credit.
I've heard that the S9 has better image processing than the S5ii/X- less gross sharpening. Any chance this update brings this over to the S5ii/X? Not holding my breath on this but it would be a nice surprise.
YESSSS!!!! I was so worried this was click bait then so excited when I realized it was real!!!!! I was just lamenting how bs it was that the S9 had certain things the S5IIx didn't.
It would be sweet if they added false color, focus peaking and other monitoring tools to lumix lab so that one could use the phone instead of a dedicated monitor. Assuming the resolution of the video on the phone is decent enough.
I'm most likely wrong but I was not able to find "touch tracking" option when I tested S9 a couple of months ago. Sony has this option and I wonder Lumix does, too.
No touch tracking that I know of? They're might kind of be a way to do it, but I honestly wouldn't use their tracking in it's current state. It's not that great
On the old S5 you could hit the Joystick when u have multiple Targets (People) and the cam made an extra marker around the Box. So it was locked on the target. I don't know why they cancelled that feature in the s5II. That is really really bad....
@@DustinArmstrongProyeah you can choose left or right. in the old s5 you push the middle and it was locked on the person or animal. So other people cross each other but it sticked on the person you locked on. Can't activate this feature in s5ii
very annoying that they removed RTP streaming from the S5IIx…that was like 1 of 4 features that you pay for by getting the “x”. Really hope they revert that in the future. It really sucks when you get great new updates and have to decide “is it worth getting x, if i have to give up y”. I already upgraded, because RTP is a little more niche for me, and I would probably use frame markers a lot more, but I had played with RTP, because RTMP is a bit laggy.
As someone who self films product content, i often need it to switch from my face to hand as i hold something up, it locking on my face xan be a major annoyance.
It lacks PDAF in 1080p 60. On the S9 it has it, but on the S5ii/S5iix line it doesn't have it. It's a shame, it's a simple configuration, it should have been.
Okay wait wait wait wait wait! Wait! Wait! Wait! Wait wait. I just looked in the change log. "Wired LAN streaming feature (RTP/RTSP) has been removed." I need that, I use that, why did they remove that, I guess I won't be updating.

Wait a sec, so hybrid zoom works the same as APSC crop? Is there a difference? I guess both cannot be used at the same time?
My understanding is that hybrid zoom does not just crop in on the sensor as you put it. That would reduce the resolution. Instead it's using a smaller portion of the sensor without a loss of resolution, essentially converting to a crop sensor camera. So it maintains full 4K res as your zoom . Let me know if I am understanding this correctly. I heard this on another video.
Now did they fix the broken auto focus in 1080p on higher frame rates?
This is what I need answered! I’m at work atm and don’t get home for another 5 hours and it’s driving me nuts not knowing haha
@jockturner1547 I tested it they didn't fix it 😩
@@dan9736 That is extremely disappointing. The 1080p slowmo in full frame limitation wasn’t disclosed at the release of the camera and I bought it believing it would be have the functionality. I’ve been holding out buying a lens to deal with the issue and was hoping I wouldn’t have to.
Not happy about that, Lumix. 😐
This is a hardware limitation. They change sensor readout in s9. Thats why 100p is much better and looks like 50p , and also affect autofocus.
@@ryszardzokowski812 can you expand on this? 100p looks like 50p? Is that true they changed readout? Like faster processing or different sensor? Is it higher or lower quality? Where did you hear this? Thanks
is there plenty of still photography content on your course?
Learning the photography settings should be launching in early February. There will be about 2 hours. Plus I have plans to add other photography tutorials as well like deep sky photography
If you want eye detection only, try animal detection mode. It will track the human eye very accurate. At least on the GH7 works.
Whaaaaaaaa can't believe I never thought of that actually because when I'm in human detect it'll track my huskies face sometimes probably because his eyes look more human like. Imma do some tests tomorrow and if it works 100% making a video on it and giving you credit.
@@DustinArmstrongPro That would be very appreciated man :) Thank you!
So we have a machine with no discrimination between any kind of living creatures.
🤣🤣🤣
I tried it out after the update before this one, and it was not working that well, of now it does it will be crazy good 🤩
Wow awesome update...just got my s5iix, so im looking forward to it
🔥🔥🔥
Lumix is so goated
🐐
Will they bring the Arri lut profile from the GH7 ?
That's a paid firmware update on the GH7
And GH6
Is there a 2:1 frame guide?
Yes
Looks pretty slick. I wish it had that stick to whatever u point to af like the sonys have. but thats complaining on a super high level :D
Maybe we'll see that soon
yes! eye only AF mode or a more locked af mod so that it grabs one person's face and doesn't let go . We need it!
I got a video planned that I think will help push LUMIX to add it😏
Imagine how much OP hybrid zoom would be in S1Rii with 60MP sensor! And imagine S9 with the same sensor with EVF! Make it happen Lumix!
My guess is 45MP
I wish I had an s5ii with the 24-70
thanks Dustin
🙏
How long should one wait until firmware gets tested? Should we wait to see if it bricks our cameras or is the coast clear?
I've never had an update brick my camera even with pre released versions LUMIX has given me access to. No need to wait to update!
@@DustinArmstrongPro Awesome thanks! I was a former fuji user, so I had to ask. I'm never going back. Panasonic is amazing.
I've heard that the S9 has better image processing than the S5ii/X- less gross sharpening. Any chance this update brings this over to the S5ii/X? Not holding my breath on this but it would be a nice surprise.
I haven't noticed a difference in the image between them
I need the Arri LogC update next!
That'd be wild
YESSSS!!!! I was so worried this was click bait then so excited when I realized it was real!!!!! I was just lamenting how bs it was that the S9 had certain things the S5IIx didn't.
I still clickbait but I'm usually classy when I do it😉
@@DustinArmstrongPro 😂😂😂
It would be sweet if they added false color, focus peaking and other monitoring tools to lumix lab so that one could use the phone instead of a dedicated monitor. Assuming the resolution of the video on the phone is decent enough.
I'm most likely wrong but I was not able to find "touch tracking" option when I tested S9 a couple of months ago. Sony has this option and I wonder Lumix does, too.
No touch tracking that I know of? They're might kind of be a way to do it, but I honestly wouldn't use their tracking in it's current state. It's not that great
why didnt they give this update to the s5.... :( wth lumix
new firmware sounds like new camera release right around the corner🤞🏾🤣
That's how I feel
On the old S5 you could hit the Joystick when u have multiple Targets (People) and the cam made an extra marker around the Box. So it was locked on the target. I don't know why they cancelled that feature in the s5II. That is really really bad....
Isn't that the feature I explained in the video?
@@DustinArmstrongProyeah you can choose left or right. in the old s5 you push the middle and it was locked on the person or animal. So other people cross each other but it sticked on the person you locked on. Can't activate this feature in s5ii
What's the point of Hybrid Zoom? You can take 6k and zoom digitally in post-processing. That's the same thing or am I missing something?
It's pretty much the same. Some people prefer to do it in camera
very annoying that they removed RTP streaming from the S5IIx…that was like 1 of 4 features that you pay for by getting the “x”.
Just hold the product in front of your face and it should focus to it
Can anybody please verify if Hybrid Zoom in the new firmware for S5 IIX only works in 25 FPS and not higher ? Anybody knows the answer to this ?
Doesn't work in higher fps
Just updated my S5ii. Now, I gotta play with that Hybrid Zoom toy...er...tool, I mean.
Literally is like a toy. Love these updates, but now that I got my course I got a bunch of videos to update now 🫠
from a Sony a7siii user...I might change to Lumix 😅
Take it from someone who pre ordered the A7s III the second it was available, I've enjoyed LUMIX way more than Sony since I fully switched 2 years ago
Did anyone else notice much faster bootup times?
Feels like it is much faster now after updating my S5II
It lacks PDAF in 1080p 60. On the S9 it has it, but on the S5ii/S5iix line it doesn't have it. It's a shame, it's a simple configuration, it should have been.
I think that's a hardware limitation due to processing but I could be wrong. I think the S9 has a better processor if I'm not mistaken
Okay wait wait wait wait wait! Wait! Wait! Wait! Wait wait. I just looked in the change log.
"Wired LAN streaming feature (RTP/RTSP) has been removed."
I need that, I use that, why did they remove that, I guess I won't be updating.
Same here!
I didn't even know there was another firmware update.
It's because it was just released 30 minutes ago😉
@@DustinArmstrongPro Lol, well it's on my camera right now. Thanks for the update!
Took me FOREVER to figure out that Eye/Face detect not working right. Frustrated me so much lol
I did too at first lol
S1 user here. 😢😢😢😢
dude.. !!
For me, if lumix brings the arri log to S5ii and S5iix, i will never, ever, ever, times 100 ever leave panasonic
Likely would only come to the S5IIX and would be a paid upgrade
Wired LAN streaming feature (RTP/RTSP) has been removed.
- The image transfer feature to PC via Wi-Fi has been removed. (Only European models)
- The streaming feature via RTMP has been removed. (Only European models)
This is shit(
The hybrid crop does nottttt look good lmao
The example I showed was more to demonstrate the distance it can go but there's been several videos I've used it that nobody has even noticed or called attention to it. Obviously pros and cons still
it's not that great for photos, but if you use it in 4K video, you do NOT lose detail/resolution in "hybrid" zoom, due to the 6k sensor
@@DustinArmstrongPro yeah forsure
@@mattevanst4967 thats super cap. its literally punching in on the sensor, you are 100% losing detail. maybe the file comes out as 4k but that doesnt mean it didnt lose detail or "resolution"
Listen, all this automatic focus functions cannot give you the results you request, pro video people use manual focus and thats it. Autofocus is a helping tool, not more. Maybe you try making ai videos, the computer will do it for you.
gh7 dont have auto focus in variable frame rate, no pro res in same mode, no open gate all-i ,. no 48fps in 24hz cinema mode,... no braw in 24hz ,. its like canon cripple hammer just found a new place in industry
