    Finally another video from Dustin Armstrong! I hate that lens release button in the front. Seriously, wish it was on the other side of the lens. Also, on the shutter angle wheel, you can swap it out with the aperture wheel at the front, that way you don’t accidentally change your shutter angle. It’s worked wonders for me after accidentally switching my angle. Hope that helps!

      You better believe it🤙Omg. I've never accidentally pressed a lens lock button until this camera... I've actually considered switching it but I'm so used to it being that way I've neglected the switch 😂 maybe one day I'll decide to and just do it

    my next cam,,, and i am leaning that way,,, might become a a new pana..
    oh yeagh,,, my pana went swimming a bit in a river crossing,,, and i lucked out,, i opened up as much of the case as i could to air dry,,, with the batt. removed instantly when i hit dry land..
    and it still works...a decade later

    I wish you would offer a video series on best practices and settings on the S1H. Having upgraded from the GH4, this thing is so much more complicated when it comes to set-up and use. I tested V-log up at Grand Tetons and hated the look of that footage.

    • @DustinArmstrongPro
      @DustinArmstrongPro  4 года назад

      I will add it to my list of videos. How did you expose for V-LOG when you were shooting? I often shoot in natural for these youtube videos if you don't want to do much in post

    • @graymatters7584
      @graymatters7584 4 года назад +1

      @@DustinArmstrongPro When in V-log, the image often shows as a thinner belt in the center of the histogram. That's what I remember. I shot most of the rest of the footage in HLG, and it came out better than I could ever have hoped. The dynamic range shocked me in post. I'm selling those clips in a couple of places as stock. If there was a way to post stills from the video, I'd post it here. I was really pleased with that outing. Clearly this is an important camera - I just need to keep learning what I can do with it!

    • @DustinArmstrongPro
      @DustinArmstrongPro  4 года назад +2

      Maybe I'll have to make a video on converting HLG and VLOG. I've tried quite a few different ways and I could at least show what I do. That's awesome though! Some people like VLOG more and some people like HLG more really is just preference. Totally though absorb all you can here and else where!

      @DustinArmstrongPro  3 года назад +1

      I’m sure if you set the camera fan to auto it would kick on regardless if you’re in video or not. That wouldn’t make sense to me that the camera could overheat in photos but not video

  • @deelofilms
    @deelofilms 4 года назад +1

    LOVE the S1H, but indeed, it's not perfect. AF is the main complaint, crop only for 4k/60fps, no RAW (yet..we got more Beta footage this week), and the shutter speed wheel is easy to turn accidentally. But the S1H hits a sweet spot for me as a film / night sky timelapse camera. Ergonomics + Menus are better than Sony, IMO... I also prefer Pana color.
    I'll be curious when somebody compares the EOS R5 vs Pana S1H

    • @DustinArmstrongPro
      @DustinArmstrongPro  4 года назад

      I agree with you on everything. That video of things I don't like about the S1H I have already filmed and will be releasing that soon. 100% though I prefer Pana color over Sony. I've been very happy with it even comparing it side by side to some of my RED Helium footage. Almost prefer it as well!
      Oh don't worry I have two videos planned for that matchup. First a spec comparison before I have them in my hands and hopefully very soon after the A7sIII is delivered, I will make an ultimate mirrorless comparison video of the R5, A7sIII, and S1H. Going to be a fun video.

    Dustin, let your audience know about the ACES capabilities of this camera. In my opinion this is one of the most underestimated capabilities that elevates this camera into filmmaker's heaven (amongst many other features). No more worries about which LUT to use for transforming VLog into Rec709 with all those negative impacts on dynamic range, color fringing when further grading, etc. Since I came across ACES by incindent I use it all the time.

    • @DustinArmstrongPro
      @DustinArmstrongPro  4 года назад

      Are you talking about the free varicam luts on panasonic’s website? I've actually made a video about those

    • @joyoffilming9500
      @joyoffilming9500 4 года назад +1

      @@DustinArmstrongPro Hi Dustin, those LUTs you are referring too, is exactly what I am NOT talking about.
      I know those varicam LUTS, and I also downoladed those. Ultimately, ony the one called "Nicest Rec709" or similar, works with most of my footage.
      What I am talking about is quite different, not requiring any LUTs at all:
      You tell your editing SW in the project settings (in my case it's Davinci Resolve) to use the ACEScc color space to work internally with - instead of DavinciColorSpaceRGB or so.
      Then you need to tell DR which Camera the Log footage comes from and that in the end the export should be into Rec709 - also in the project settings.
      For the ACES Input Device Transform (IDT) you select the P35 Panasonic - and you are done.
      The IDT is, other than a LUT, a formula for DR how to deal with colors and Gamma - and, it works forward and backwards, i.e. lossless!
      So, when importing the footage from the S1H it gets immediately transformed into ACES color space which is the biggest of all spaces. And when you export it (viewing on your monitor or rendering) it gets translated into Rec709.
      Hope this helps / clarifies.

    • @DustinArmstrongPro
      @DustinArmstrongPro  4 года назад

      I haven't been super impressed with the Panasonic Luts and stopped using them a long time ago so I totally agree.
      Totally clarifies actually. I'm going to have to test this out I have a video planned talking about some of the luts I like, but would love to test this and use it for comparison. Thank you!

    uh I had an accident with my S1H the first couple days I had it. I got a Weeble S and I thought the camera was mounted solidly to the gimbal. But the the Weeble is tricksie and the camera fell.
    I grabbed it before it hit the ground but the screen was extended and got bent in my desperate grab. It still works, but does't close as neatly as I would like.
    If you can suggest a reputable place who can replace the flippy-tilty screen, I would recommend it.
