    Hi Dustin, again a great video from you.
    Appreciate your honest comments on this beast of a camera.
    I bought mine just some weeks ago, and I did not regret it so far. And yes, it was painful for me, being a true Nikonista for years, giving up some of my lenses (while keeping some with a Novoflex adapter in manual mode for the S1H).
    But the best thing of the S1H I was not really aware of when making the decision - and, there are not many videos about it around:
    It is the fact that there is a small little thing, called IDT (Input Device Transform) from Panasonic for their professonal film cameras to work in the ACES colorspace in Davinci Resolve (I guess, it is available for other SW, too).
    And, the Panasonic IDT works also for the S1H as it has the same color science sensor wise. That makes the use of this camera really superior when shooting in Log - great colors that fully comply with a RED, BM, etc. And, no more fumbling around with those "I make your footage look cinematic" type of crappy LUTs that ruin your dynamic range during processing. BTW, ACES is one of the Netflix requirments for fil makers - they know why.
    Hope to see more great stuff from you soon!

    Hey, I'm really close to purchasing this camera, but I wanted to know if the linear focus option is available on third-party lenses from Sigma. I'm debating between using the MC-21 to adapt Sigma EF lenses because they are all clutch based, but if you can set linear focus on the L mount Sigma glass, I'd much rather use that. I've looked everywhere for an answer and haven't been able to find one. Great video btw. I really appreciate the S1H content. Very clear, concise, and info-packed.

    Really appreciate your content right now; I sold my GH4s this week after five years of faithful service to upgrade to this beast.
    I was considering the R5, but I made the trade-off of Autofocus for unlimited recording time (you can’t say you’re making a video-focussed camera if you don’t offer this, in my view). And the money I had left over allowed me to update a bunch of gear that had gotten long in the tooth.
    Keep making stuff - I’ve not found any other creators making valuable content for S1H users. Once I get to grips with the beast I might start myself... anyway, cheers.

    • @DustinArmstrongPro
      @DustinArmstrongPro  4 года назад +4

      Glad you're finding it valuable! Dang 5 years that's a LONG time.
      I think we all considered the R5, but agree the unlimited recording is a deal breaker but the biggest deal breaker for me was the overheating filming in 4k 10 bit. I've just out grown 8 bit and 10 bit is perfect. Plus I'm trying to stay ahead and produce only 4k content and I can't shoot with a camera that overheats when shooting 4k (already dealt with that for 2 years on the A7III)
      I wasn't the first, but I feel like I'm the most consistent currently. Glad you have found it helpful! You totally should. Like they say, competition is good for the consumers👍🙏

    Hi Dustin. Regarding point 2 and the Zoom to AF when in MF. I don't have that issue as I have setup a function button (which is the button on the S, C & MF switch) to enable/disable this when I need it. I don't use the touch screen and have disabled this function when I use the focus ring. I'm not sure which setting I changed but on the Gear->AF menu 1. I have AF+MF=OFF, Focus Ring Lock=OFF. If I find it I will ping you! Not much help I know but having just got my S1H a few weeks ago I am loving it. QQ - do you Vlog-L as your main profile? I was wondering what your best picture setting are for Full HD 120P as in Vlog-L it gets a bit noisy even in good light? I like the Natural Profile and have used Vlog-L (using your LUTs) which is also good. I was also looking at Cine D. Having come from GH4 then GH5, I am loving the FF look of the S1H and find the transition from the GH series to the S1H very easy.

    • @DustinArmstrongPro
      @DustinArmstrongPro  4 года назад +1

      Please do! Lol. I'm so sick of that tick box. I will try what you suggested and see if that gets rid of it. I use VLOG and the S1H doesn't have VLOG L. It's the same V-LOG in the EVA and Varicam so it's a bit better/different than VLOG L. I use natural quite often including when I shoot these youtube videos. I have a video planned where I test all the picture profiles and figure out which is the least noisy in lower light situations so once that video comes out you may find it insightful. Me as well though FF all the way. I shot with the GH5s for awhile before the S1H and found too it's a easy switch.

    Thanks for the honest review. Same here, I have the S1H and as a solo hybrid shooter and also coming from Sony and Canon, I really struggled with this camera. Am selling it.
    Switching back to A9 (fast action sports and wildlife) + A7R4 (products, portrait, wildlife - no BIF) and now looking to replace the S1H with either A7S3 or R5 for video.
    What about you, are you looking to switch?

    • @DustinArmstrongPro
      @DustinArmstrongPro  4 года назад +3

      Nice are you more of a photo shooter or video? I won't be switching, the R5 sounds way too unreliable for video, but depending on what the A7sIII is like once it is shown, I will most likely have both the S1H and A7sIII since I have Sony glass.

      I would say I am 70% stills and 30% video but in the coming 12mos I want to push to 50/50.
      I love the colors on S1H the most but for my use cases, I really need to af to be fast. For studio work or where there isn’t much fast action or no run and gun work, then the S1H manual focus is fine.
      Would like to see how you match the colors of S1H + A7S3 should you get this combo.

    Funny enough, after all these times now I'm looking into this camera. All my lenses are M42 and M lenses with film camera, then I have jumped to Fujifilm for digital. After 7 years, I have decided to jump into FF camera, look pasted Canon R5, Nikon Z7 II and have made my decision for Leica SL2-S. But recently I look into this S1H, it ticks all my boxes. I dont do AF so I dont have the main problem and if I do video recording while traveling it will be most likely in infinity or just street capturing. So what beat the S1 and SL2-S or even SL2 for me? Well I can do multi shot on S1H too and the flap screen that Leica doesn't have (same for S1), it also comes with the same level of EVF and the top LCD. Yes it is bigger and heavier, but my lenses are so tiny and the price point its not going to be more expensive than a Leica. I think I'm the smallest group of people that benefit to have the S1H. Not to mention L mount will be very mature in a few years time.

Im going to buy a camera soon and base on everyone opinions (so I look around), Sensor-wise the SL2-S is using BSI-CMOS,S1H does dual native ISO so there is hard to compare for hobbyist like me anyway. Currently SL2-S is around $400 dollars more expensive than S1H but after tax the price differences would be over $1200. I see it is unfair to compare the software as one mainly is for video and the other one is for photo. The brand name and build quality is another thing hard to beat the SL2-S, as I believe since there is ventilation in S1H, highly likely S1H wont work under -10 for too long, but someone have done a test that the S1H can withstand short period of heavy rain.

    Autofocus is a great thing to have. Never personally had a camera that had it and found myself a better filmmaker because of years of racking focus manually. S1H autofocus no matter firmware will never be great as the sensor is only equipped with contrast-detect points which while acceptable on stills is not cut it. Phase detect is what makes sony, nikon and other cameras sensors have reliable autofocus. But the reason panasonics cameras have been industry leading on color science/sensor/price is that you sacrifice pixel and image quality with the inclusion of more detection points for autofocus in the sensor.

    • @DustinArmstrongPro
      @DustinArmstrongPro  4 года назад +2

      Yep. Knowing how to manually focus makes you more versatile is how I'd put it. The reason I brought up the autofocus is people say it's really good, but it's not. I don't mind that it's not since I have years of experience as well shooting manual, but wouldn't want someone to buy thinking the autofocus was good then return it or sell it. But yes Panasonics image is 👀

But I concur with ur conclusions. What annoys me the most, is the slow motion being cropped and having 4.2.0. I wonder if there will be a fw update that will fix this (if this sensor allows it). I did not find a way to disable that annoying focus box btw. You will do video about the waveform monitor? Great idea! Could you include typical scenes to show by how much you would expose them please? That might be a great topic, especially when using v-log. I still struggle with darker scenes (in the woods or inside for example). I saw in another video that the standard or 709like color profiles are very good at denoising in-camera. Other people say that cinelike D is the option to go with (instead of v-log) when shooting darker scenes. Maybe you have more precise insight in regard to this matter. I read in an article that v-log is still a pain for many filmmakers. So maybe just choose v-log when bigger dynamic range is really required. Cheers!

    The SONY Tough Cards were recalled recently for this very problem. File corruption. Supposedly it is fixed now. Ironically, on paper the SONY tough cards are supposed to be the best cards for it. And lol Oh god you're one of *those* ....4:2:2 4k on a Bayer sensor? 4:2:2 is just a color subsampling value. Shoot a 6k format that records 4:2:0 and can down-sample the 6k to 4k and get a 4:4:4 sample. It won't affect the bit-depth any, but doing that would certainly help with grading and chroma key work. You realize that's why it's a NETFLIX approved Camera? Of course you do, your broadcast background.
    There's a point where the reductive reasoning that states that a bayer signal is "4:2:2" has no real world practical application since there are so many mitigating factors that affect quality, from the actual sensor being used, to the quality of the raw signal, its bit-depth, its compression scheme, and even if recorded as 4:2:2, the particular recording codec used, even the weather. 4:2:2 isn't some universal standard of quality. It's to a point where it's like the old Spinal Tap talking about amps that go to 11. All the other amps only go to 10. 11 is one better, isn't it?
    You worked in Broadcast and you're using the Histogram? Yikes! That's why it's hard to tell what the image is doing. Use the ugly parade and scopes dude. So the histogram is (I am pretty sure) used for photos. Which means Blacks will be zero and whites will be 1023. The reason is, even RUclips, is going to push those highlights, pull the blacks and push things around. Just use the broadcast standard for white on that color space and you'll be good. 235/940 is white for 8 to 10 bit. If you use the histogram I think it goes from 0 (which is not black but for photos the camera will think it's black) to white 1023, EVERYTHING above 940 is going to be clipped out bro. To me it sounds like you're running into a lot of user operation errors, because you are either unfamiliar with the camera or forgotten your broadcast ways.

    • @DustinArmstrongPro
      @DustinArmstrongPro  4 года назад

      It is ironic and still ironic because I know people who are still having problems with the new sony tough cards.
      The reason I pointed that out, which is actually the point behind this video, was to inform people and help them to not get wrapped up in the marketing garble that newer users trying to get into a more cinema like camera without investing tens of thousands of dollars may not be aware of with this camera. I obviously fell short in getting that point across or maybe this content isn't for you? I also made a whole video about the production guide from Netflix if you'd like to watch.
      I'm definitely not an expert nor do I ever claim to be (I say I'm "your video tour guide" but that's more just a strategy on my channel to make myself more memorable on youtube) and you sound much smarter than me which is just fine. This camera doesn't have parade, it does have vector-scope and a waveform monitor, but I have the same complaint I have with histogram that I do with both of those tools on this camera. Obviously you'll have better luck using an external monitor with better scopes. For the type of things I shoot, most of the time I don't have the convenience of bringing in a color checker, or even gray card for that matter, so I find that I have to rely on tools to give me a decent image exposure wise, like the histogram, than other tools or just rely on what my eyes see and occasionally use zebras.
      In regards to luminance level, I'd personally rather shoot at 0-1023 because if I bake in the broadcast standard in camera, your decreasing your dynamic range (unless it doesn't bake it in and just displays it on the viewfinder, but I'm pretty sure it bakes it in) and would rather squish that range into the standard in post. I'm open to discussion, but like I said, you sound much smarter than me, but that doesn't mean I don't know what I'm doing. It sounds to me your on the GH5 or GH5s? The S1H doesn't have the 235-940 in the luminance level setting. It's 64-940 by the way. Thanks for you comment🙏
