Nice video as usual Gerald! Also, Richard Wong tested the v1.2 autofocus a week ago, at normal frame rate, the S1 does a bit better than previously. but when he switched to 60fps, it becomes so much better like another camera! He also tested the autofocus with many different type of movements too and repeatedly walking, running, pop in, hold still, slow movement. Check that one if anyone is interested in more in-depth autofocus test.
The S1 did remarkably well when filming in 60fps as seen in the comparison video from Richard Wong. Sure he wasn‘t using the same types of lenses for the A7 III and S1 but the face tracking of the S1 was even superior to the Sony when shooting 60fps.

Hi Gerald! Thanks for your amazing reviews! I have the S1H and I am learning to shoot with V-LOG. I have purchased the Leeming LUTs and I will apply the ETTR principles in my next shoots. Zebras are already set to 90% (95 seems a little too high). For darker scenes, I will use HLG and set sharpness and NR to -5, as recommended by Leeming. That's a lot of testing and it surely takes some time to get intuitive with V-LOG and HLG. But a good LUT will be essential for a quicker workflow. So thanks for the Leeming tip! I heard that Standard Profile with sharpness and NR to -5 can produce good results for darker scenes as well. Oh dear ... so much testing ahead. Cheers!
Man Gerald, the amount of time you must put into these videos is crazy! Definitely a full time job, with overtime! Thanks so much! I’m curious, if you haven’t actually timed it out, approximately how long would you say this entire video took to produce, pre/shooting/post production?

We know the A7-III uses the Sony IMX410 sensor. We also know that Sony has it for sale on the open market. We also know that Nikon buys it for their Z6. I would bet my wife that the S1 is also using the IMX410 sensor too. Panny has no problem buying Sony sensors at all. (GH5=IMX272 and GH5S = IMX299) If it's not the "exact" IMX410, then it's a sister BSI chip with the phase detect dual photosite grid removed. Fantastic video Gerald!
Hey Gerald, would love to see an updated video of the S1 with the latest firmware update features, and if you feel it's a worthy camera in 2021 (with the S5, R5/R6, A7S IIIs and Pocket 6K Pro all out and about).. also maybe a video about the ecosystem (Camera, lenses, rigging etc) for an estimation of ownership cost?
Damn. There is so much detailed information in this video. Although I'm not particularly concerned with the outcome of this match up, I learned a lot by watching the whole thing anyway
Same here. Actually I was kinda looking forward to what his findings would be but withing a few minutes I was just bathing in the knowledge he bestowed on me. Great communicator and teacher.

I'm still watching after 2 years lol. Lumix did a phenomenal job with organomics, EVF resolutions, and stabilization. The decision to stick with contrast AF is where they went wrong. I suppose that's probably the toughest part of developing a new line of cameras. It took Sony several generations to get it right, and with the new Nikon Z9 (I hope you make a vid using that beast), it took Nikon 3 generations. I think Panasonic has a chance to at least be a 4th option amongst the 3 giant camera companies if they decide to ditch their current AF system. They have video and stabilization down already, so having eye and face direction would definitely make it a very interesting option for pros and semi-pros out there. There's always room for those that want to not follow the crowd.
By the way, the minor colour inaccuracies you see are not the LUT, but rather the X-Rite inaccuracies compared to the CamAlign chart I use now! I'll send you a clip showing that in the next day or so.
Could you pin this up Gerald? Quite important data here. After i saw Paul Leeming’s image of the charts.. (Facebook) ..enlightening experience! Thank you G.U and P.M for all the stuff what you’ve made!

@@geraldundone Yes. I actually got it "free" with my purchase of the S1--from B&H. (I purchased it only about a month or two ago). Of course, B&H will be sending the code out at the determined time---so nothing to do but wait. But those who purchased early will have to pay for the upgrade---indeed many already have, and they, like myself, are waiting for the code. It can't come soon enough. G Undone, thank you for another great video with informative narrative and well-considered approaches to testing and analysis. You're a credit to RUclips, Canada and Humanity. Solid work.
Cool video still to watch in 2022 (looking into the back catalog!) At 12:00, the color accuracy comments didn't age well however with the color patches, as expected not aligning on their Rec.709 gamut reference since V-Log is using V-Gamut primaries instead, therefore requires color space conversion. It seems like even in newer videos you are missing the colorspace conversion step which requires a matrix, only distorting the hue selectively, which can allow to align a few colors manually but get most of others off in the process.
You nailed the concept of the Sony colors. (right before the 13:00 mark) People, after years of seeing Canon footage, just aren't used to the more accurate, for lack of a better explanation, colors on the Sony. Also, good demonstration on the 8 bit vs 10 bit in a practical sense by showing that color chart.
But here is the weird thing, the fuji has just as accurate colors as the sony, but the colors and the skintones seems to be much more pleasing to the eye, so why is that the case? Is it the highlight roll off or something?
Good job again! Though I am fully committed to Sony now, I still have fondness for Pansaonic and who knows? Maybe in 2--3 years, I might get one once they are in version 2.. Or maybe later at mark 3. Regardless, it is always good to keep an eye on this company. I just hope there will be a good adapter from Sony E lenses to L, and Canon EF to L. That should help in making one decide to shift or go dual brand. Always looking forward to your videos.
Great video! Looking at the 8bit Sony vs 10bit S1, I see that as another deciding factor. At this point, grading flat footage is incredibly popular and I see a HUGE advantage in being able to (mostly) avoid banding and color artifacts. You've proven that banding vs. no banding is visible in 8bit RUclips video uploads (amazing!), and only one camera gives you an advantage here.
Another great video Gerald. Great job. I'm glad you said the Sony almost never lost focus because I could see it losing it, like at 6:11. Thanks for the great work, as always ♡
Thanks a lot! I find with the Sony it's not like it loses focus completely and focuses on the background or something, but when it does have issues, it usually just drags a bit. As if it was a bit delayed in keeping up with the movement. Like you saw at 16:11. Turning up the focusing speed helps with this, but it can make it a bit too harsh for certain shots.
I wish you had done an IBIS comparison when shooting video, especially when the camera is in motion: handheld panning, tilting, some combo of the two, and walking while shooting video. Looking at GH5 vs A7III IBIS comparisons, there is a huge difference in IBIS performance when the camera is in motion, so it would have been great to have this confirmed when comparing the S1 and the A7III.
The IBIS between the S1 and a7 III is not worth comparing. I demonstrated the IBIS in my previous review, it's on a whole 'nother level compared to the a7 III. The S1 is very similar to the GH5 in this regard. Sony IBIS isn't that helpful for video, imo.
@@geraldundone I think it's always worth comparing because many people will mistakenly assume that ALL 5-axis IBIS is the SAME, when they are not at all. So it's always helpful to remind people that there is a huge difference with IBIS from different brands. Compare it the same way you would autofocus. because good IBIS makes shooting handheld footage so easy. No tripod or monopod, just pick up the camera and shoot.
outstanding comparison, thank you. It would be interesting to test further video autofocus in real life conditions and maybe pushing further the near/far focusing possibilities
You have the best explanations without getting too over my head lol. Have you compared the Leeming Lut to both the Gamut Lut and Panasonic’s Lut? Would be curious to see which you prefer.
Your tests are the best! Even if i don't own a Panasonic S1 I just have to watch your videos. Just to bring me up to date in the camera world. I own a A73 but im still not 100% happy with it. The worst is the low light performance compared to the A6500. The A6500 outperformed my A73 in low light in every picture profile (noise & AF). I cant explain myself. Maybe you can? :)
Thank you for the kind words! But I can't explain the low light results you experienced either. I've done that comparison and the a7 III was a clear winner for me. Did you have APS-C mode on?
@@Hunselmann If you film with standard or picture profile Still and you enable the noise reduction in the settings it will apply it also in video...maybe you have it ON just in the sony a6500
Patiently waiting for the camera company I bought it from to receive Panasonic’s DMW-SFU2 codes so I can try the filmmaker update! Comes free as long as you buy from an authorized company before July 31st I believe!
Gerald, have you seen Richard Wong's video AF test on the latest S1 firmware from a few days ago? Interestingly, he found that at 60fps the performance was greatly improved and actually on a par with the A7iii at 4k60. Perhaps mainly of academic interest for most since you can't shoot 4k60 without a crop, but still an interesting result. It would be interesting to see if someone can replicate it.
@@VindicateMedia Right, whereas the S1 can but with a crop. So if you really need 4k at fullframe, you're limited to slower framerates either way, and Richard's results are not all that helpful. But if you only need 1080p or you can live with the S1 crop at 4k60, and if Richard's results turn out to be correct, it would appear that the S1 autofocus is now right up there with the Sony - again perhaps not useful in practice for most people, but this does seem to be actual news.
I actually love your videos. I want to learn more and I (being a young millennial) struggle to focus on a lot of informative videos but yours are excellent. I hope that I can one-day make content just as good and helpful to others! :) btw, do you have a colour-grading tutorial for sony cameras? I think I tried to have a look but tbf RUclips search engine isn't the greatest. All the best!
Thank you very much, William. That's a big compliment and it means a lot to me. I don't have a specific video on that topic, but this one is pretty close and might be helpful: ruclips.net/video/9E8doNzDymo/видео.html Cheers!
Basically the way I see it is that the advantage in IBIS outweighs the AF. At the end of the day, it is much easier to MF in a pinch and get a shot versus being always in focus but cannot fix the camera shake in post. Also Gerald, just to clarify - with the S1, if it handles highlight recovery more if you expose for the shadows (to avoid color shift), would it not make sense to have the Zebras set higher?
The zebras should be set to 85% so that you know when something is going to clip. Ideally, we'd want to set them to 88%, but that's not an option, so it's safer to stick with 85%. In my experience though, you can actually go 1/3 to 2/3rds of a stop beyond 85% and still be fine. But just be careful, and don't do that on skin.
Do you have a video discussing why ISO is measured differently between camera brands? I was under the impression that ISO was a standardized measurement
Man I was waiting for this! Definitely thinking more seriously about the S1 now...I just love shooting with no gimbals (spoiled by the GH5 and not willing to give it up) and now that sigma L lenses are coming...yeah it’s not a simple argument anymore...
Hi Gerald, first of all great comparison! Have you seen Richard Wong's comparison of both cameras. He did the talking head and jumping into frame video tests and found that the new firmware with higher framerates resulted in drastically improved performance. Comparing 24p 4k to 24p 4k on both sony and pansonic he found the Sony to perform better but the S1 to be much improved over prior versions. He had a theory that bumping to a higher framerate, allowed the DFD algorithm to sample the sensor faster and result in better focus tracking. when increasing the frame rate, the Panasonic was noticeably superior (in my opinion anyway) to the Sony and the results were not at all what I was expecting. While the S1 uses a 4k 60p crop area it still demonstrates the potential. Even for those of us shooting 1080p where the S1 may actually have the better video performance. Regardless it's great to see the improvements both Sony and Panasonic are putting into their AF systems. Worth checking out his video :)
@@geraldundone yes I saw that video too. 24p seems similar, I think Sony still quite a bit faster and better. But 60fps S1 video tracking is a different beast! Like Goku transfomed into Super Saiyen! He also tested many different ways too, not just pop in and out, he also did talking head, slowly moving at close distance, walking, not moving and even running
I hope they fix the exposure controls in variable frame rate mode soon. This is driving me nuts, man. This is unacceptable in a professional camera... specially since the stock gh5 already had it.
I enjoy the detailed videos that you produce. They are really helpful. When I consider everything these camera have to offer it's the Panasonic for me. In fact I purchased a Lumix S1R with a shutter count of 2000 for $1800. The MSRP on those are $3679.99. And yeah these is some pulsing in autofocus but I saw that on A7III as well, just not to the degree as the Lumix S1. When you look at the ease of menu, feature sets, etc. In my opinion it's hard to argue against the Lumix. But to each their own. I researched for almost a year before purchasing the Lumix S1R and the AF issues aside I can live with it.
I'm planning to film something when I can afford to travel, and if I had to choose between the Panasonic S1 and the Sony A7III, I'd always go with Panasonic. Personal bias though.
Surprising that the GH5 is a better autofocusing camera in video. Could it be that the depth of field is less on the GH5 due to the smaller sensor so therefore it has less to move the glass? Seems the Sony A7iii still kills it. That camera was a game changer for many people. I'm wondering when sony will release the S version, or as it seems they might have given up on that line.
I had the chance to check out and compare the S1 incl the new vlog upgrade. And I really like it a lot. Basically I looked at it from the video perspective. The 10 bit makes color grading like it used to be. Slog 8 bit on the Sony is simply crap - that's why I don't use it anymore and switched to HLG3 BT2020. Would I switch to the S1 (...because of my GH5 past ...)? No. It's a pretty god camera, but it's too pricey, pretty heavy (compared to the Sony) and I'm not sure if I like the lenses that will be coming out. Several Sony lenses are pretty awesome. So I stick with my BMPCC4K/GH5/A7iii-combination until something magical happens;) Thanks for you awesome comparison!
Well...the AF on the Sony is great. The EVF, Hires mode, weathersealing are great on the Panasonic S1. But it weighs...a lot more! I would go for the SOny, unless you shoot landscapes where the HiRes mode even with movement just shines!
@6:40 Looks like this is getting sorted in the upcoming 1.3 firmware: "Ability to manually set the exposure according to the video exposure mode (P/A/S/M) in High-Speed Video mode." Lots of other updates too: na.panasonic.com/us/news/lumix-firmware-update-for-s1r-s1-gh5-gh5s-g9
I know this is an older video, but hope you don't mind me asking a question or two. In terms of dynamic range, the bottom line is that while they are similar, in V Log your main benefit is going to be avoiding banding in the sky, and the main advantages of SLOG are a bit better color accuracy and a bit better highlight retention. But in terms of overall usable dynamic range in numbers of stops, there isn't a clear winner, correct? Thanks in advance.
Really useful review. I have S1. Waiting on VLog. Really helpful to see it pitched against the Sony, which I have rented before. Sony seems to be quite amazing but the thing that keeps me with the Panny is simple, at least for me........6K VLog!!!
Everything about this review was top notch ... but, I just don’t know if I can deal with the particles on the sensor (13:37) .. I’m going to lose sleep over this. A great review, but can I forgive particles on a giant full frame sensor on a windy day? .. uugh, I just don’t know. I want to forgive, but .. I’m tormented over this. Will there be particles on the sensor of another camera you use or review? Ok, deep breaths .. I’ll be ok. I forgive you Mr Undone.
Great video even though my brain fried half way through with information overload, anyways thanks!!!! just one question do you think Panasonic will release a FF sports camera with hybrid AF???
Hey Gerald, Great video as always. As you said, the difference in gradients is not really visible on YT. Would it be possible to upload those test sections to a drive? Thanks.
If you wanted the cleanest footage in extreme low light what would be better, a Sony a7siii with a T1.2 lens or a Sony a6500 with a full frame T1.2 lens and a speed booster? Is the A7sii's bigger sensor capable of using more than one stop more of light than the smaller APS-C sensor? It would also be super interesting to try a T1.2 medium format lens with the speed booster for sony full frame on the a7sii
Hi Gerald, thanks for the super helpful information. Question for you: given the nature of contrast based autofocus, do you think it is possible to fully solve the problem of focus hunting on this camera? I have been pondering this for weeks because I wish that Panasonic could figure out a way to fix this issue and perfect the S1. Since contrast based autofocus works by the process of checking focus against itself by going out of focus, could it be forever doomed with this problem.? What do you think? Is there hope that one day contrast auto focus will be reliable? (anyone else please feel free to comment as well:)

Thank you very much, Justin! Really appreciate that.
Always nicely done.
15:55 gotta love the Color of the S1 and GH5 too!
Killing it with these in-depth videos my dude!!
Thank you! 😃
Cool video still to watch in 2022 (looking into the back catalog!)
At 12:00, the color accuracy comments didn't age well however with the color patches, as expected not aligning on their Rec.709 gamut reference since V-Log is using V-Gamut primaries instead, therefore requires color space conversion.
It seems like even in newer videos you are missing the colorspace conversion step which requires a matrix, only distorting the hue selectively, which can allow to align a few colors manually but get most of others off in the process.
Best in the biz! Thank you brother!
Superb way of testing as always Gerald. Thanks
Thank you very much!
Been learning so much from you . thanks Gerald for sharing .
Thanks a lot! Appreciate you chiming on this one. Respect your opinion.
Thanks, Mel! Appreciate the kind words. 😃🙏
Great comprehensive demonstration of 2 great cameras. Thank you.
Thank YOU! 😃
Thank for this helpful video Gerald!
Regards from Honduras!
Superb analysis. Love the detail and effort. Thanks so much.
Thanks, Paul. Appreciate it.
I am a sucker for AF comparison videos. Also really like the exposure comparison.
Thank you!
Awesome!! Gh6 will be a beast
@@geraldundone
Right. I've seen this delay in a lot of sony clips. But, it's still out of focus 😂
Now, we can also use Varicam luts on the S1!
Next intro: I have a beginning and a middle but no
I wish you had done an IBIS comparison when shooting video, especially when the camera is in motion: handheld panning, tilting, some combo of the two, and walking while shooting video.
I'm surprised how close that is! Still love my GH5 though 👌🏼 glad to see the AF holds up.
P.S. Gerald, you have the purest comment section 😂
Thanks, David! I like to think we've built a good community around here. Very high ratio of kind, productive comments.
As always... I found this video helpful. Great job.
Thanks, Stephen! Appreciate it.
The amount of info in this video amazing.
Thank you very much! 😃🙏
Thanks for the info. Excellent comparisons. You’ve earned a subscriber
Great! Happy to have a new subscriber. Thanks!
Really well done! (as usual.)
You're the best Gerald! Thank you! 🤘
Cheers, Tyler! Thanks.
Just discovered your videos. Great job with the information provided
outstanding comparison, thank you. It would be interesting to test further video autofocus in real life conditions and maybe pushing further the near/far focusing possibilities
Thank you very much! 😃🙏
@@geraldundone Nope... APS-C mode is even worse... Maybe I just send my A7m3 back to Sony Customer Service. Thx for ur reply.
@@Hunselmann If you film with standard or picture profile Still and you enable the noise reduction in the settings it will apply it also in video...maybe you have it ON just in the sony a6500
Next intro: "DALE A TU CUERPO ALEGRÍA MACARENA"
😂😜👌
The professor is back and class is in session.
😃🙏👍
Great job, very comprehensive review.
Patiently waiting for the camera company I bought it from to receive Panasonic’s DMW-SFU2 codes so I can try the filmmaker update! Comes free as long as you buy from an authorized company before July 31st I believe!
I hope you get it soon!
A7iii doesn't have 4k60...
Thanks for sharing, Mark. I'll be sure to check that out. Cheers!
I don't have a specific video on that topic, but this one is pretty close and might be helpful: ruclips.net/video/9E8doNzDymo/видео.html
Cheers!
Just need to see the A7III go on sale! Awesome video
Thanks, Seth!
@@geraldundone great, thanks! Now that I'm done with your subpar review I'm going to wait for camera conspiracies high quality scientific review. :)
Very useful video, unbiased and professional.
Thank you! 😃
Thanks again Gerald! very useful!!!
They really did fix that autofocus
Well done, Panasonic.
Ha. Cheers! I'm glad. Thanks for the comment!
I'll definitely check that out. Cheers!
As usual, great review Gerald! My question is... who manufactures the sensor for the Si & S1R??
Great review ! Good job thank you
I hope they fix the exposure controls in variable frame rate mode soon.
I'm Gerald Undone, there is no such thing as a perfect camera.
I'm planning to film something when I can afford to travel, and if I had to choose between the Panasonic S1 and the Sony A7III, I'd always go with Panasonic. Personal bias though.
Same!
Insanely good content.
Thank you very much, Jon! Appreciate your comments.
I was surprised too. It's possible, yeah. I mean, the lens itself is much smaller, so there's a lot less glass to move in general.
I'm a bit late to this, but thanks for the extremely useful video upload.
Beast video! Thank you!
Cheers, Robert! Thanks. 😃🙏
So I stick with my BMPCC4K/GH5/A7iii-combination until something magical happens;)
Thanks for you awesome comparison!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 😃👍
Keep up the good work!!!
Nice! Thanks for the share.
Great comparisons! My question is... who makes the sensor for the S1????
I know this is an older video, but hope you don't mind me asking a question or two. In terms of dynamic range, the bottom line is that while they are similar, in V Log your main benefit is going to be avoiding banding in the sky, and the main advantages of SLOG are a bit better color accuracy and a bit better highlight retention. But in terms of overall usable dynamic range in numbers of stops, there isn't a clear winner, correct? Thanks in advance.
Excellent job!
It's a shame about the silly contrast only AF. I'm still blown away by the a6300 AF in video. Not only reliable but somehow intuitive
I've just updated my s1 but don't get any option for the .mov format. Anyone know why?
Thanks
Really useful review. I have S1. Waiting on VLog. Really helpful to see it pitched against the Sony, which I have rented before. Sony seems to be quite amazing but the thing that keeps me with the Panny is simple, at least for me........6K VLog!!!
6K Vlog for the S1 ?
Everything about this review was top notch ... but, I just don’t know if I can deal with the particles on the sensor (13:37) .. I’m going to lose sleep over this. A great review, but can I forgive particles on a giant full frame sensor on a windy day? .. uugh, I just don’t know. I want to forgive, but .. I’m tormented over this. Will there be particles on the sensor of another camera you use or review? Ok, deep breaths .. I’ll be ok. I forgive you Mr Undone.
Haha. Phew! Thank you for your generosity and grace. 😜🙏
Great video even though my brain fried half way through with information overload, anyways thanks!!!! just one question do you think Panasonic will release a FF sports camera with hybrid AF???
Hey Gerald,
Great video as always. As you said, the difference in gradients is not really visible on YT. Would it be possible to upload those test sections to a drive? Thanks.
Hit the button twice 🤯 such a joke 😜 Otherwice, great videos, both of them. 😋
Rockin', Brotha!
