My take. Panasonic introduced a full-frame "phone" camera. Phones have no EVF, no cold shoe, and no mechanical shutter. No one complains. I would buy the S9 over any $1000.00 phone.
Interesting take! I guess phones live in your pocket and do a lot of other things and generally are ready to shoot in seconds. Which this isn't. I think I was expecting this to be quick and easy to use (like a phone) but it wasn't for me, it was no quicker than using my S5 iix and in some cases more cumbersome with lack of physical dials etc.. If I had to choose and we're given £1500 (as an S5iix user) I think I'd rather buy a top of the range iPhone!
I watched a Japanese video interview with the head of marketing for the S9 in Japan and he basically said the reason why there is no evf and hot shoe is because the target audience is accustomed to using phones that having an evf and hot shoe is not necessary and it would be easier to use and transition from a phone user to the S9.
…you make phone calls, post the videos and photos you take, reply to emails, write and receive invoices, do your banking, connect with friends or clients, take photos and videos, you can theoretically run and entire business from a phone. The S9 can only do the video and photo part of a that and it does it for twice or sometimes around the same price of a premium phone. People like phone cameras because they’re convenient, not because they’re good.
@@Mocha_122such a floored idea. Having the features doesn’t make it harder for phone users to transition at all. What it does do is simply limits the camera’s use cases and the ability for the user of the camera to grow as a videographer or more importantly with these features as a photographer. One of the key features that was required of my camera when I did photography at uni was that it had either a hotshoe of a flash sync so that I could take studio photos. Something pretty much every camera, even those in the sub $500 mark have. Now someone spends $1800 on a camera from Lumix because it looks cute and seems fun, find out the like photography and try to do the same classes I did, they would be told to go buy a cheaper camera that has a simple feature like a hotshoe. What do you think that user will think of the Lumix brand after that? It won’t be positive and it won’t be to invest more into the brand.
@@Mocha_122it’s funny because that’s the most cope sounding comment on it ever. Apparently Chinese marketing for Panasonic was embarrassed to even introduce this camera.
Watched all the way, you covered everything so well! I’m of the “don’t need an evf” camp where I never really used one to begin with, I’ve been using it for RUclips and vertical content since I got it and love it !
Thanks for watching man! I was talking to Josh Cameron last week about this. I think it's perfect for that perspective, I'd love one for RUclips and testing new L mount lenses and capturing b-roll on the go. Absolutely can't fault it there. If I didn't have a iiX I'd be more interested. As a stills only experience, from the design of the body I did initially find myself just bringing it to my eye and forgetting it had no EVF. I think over time I'd just get used to it for sure. But I am very much loving the X100V for it's pure stills experience. I think the other thing I forgot to mention and it's kinda key, is that the S9 didn't feel any easier or quicker to use than my S5 iix... apart from it being much more compact.
My Lumix experience was jam packed in like a month, I’d never used one significantly until April, and since then have tested all of the current offerings either on set or as a RUclips camera , the ease of use kinda felt the same. Which isn’t bad when you’re coming from Sony menus 😂
Great video! This is a very refreshing view on the S9! I don't get all the bad press it got. I've loved using it, would never use it proffesionally but to have something so powerful and so small with you everyday is great. I pretty much leave the 45mm sigma on it all the time. Think some people are thinking far too much into it without even using it and giving it a chance
Thanks Scott! Yeah it's all a bit of a puzzle. I think people are so pumped for a new flagship they just boiled over when this was the camera that was announced! But I also get that for some, the limitations and price ratio make it a no go. I think it's a very capable little cam and would be perfect for 75% of my RUclips work. If I didn't have a iiX I'd consider picking one up after a price drop.
I will use this as a point and shoot. In public, I dont want to be seen with a flash or mic. I just want a simple setup that is light and compact. Lenses will come soon. This is a good start. Professionally, I can still use it. I can record externally, use LED lights instead of flash, and when its in a gimbal or tripod, you wont see anyone looking at the viewfinder and needing a grip. If I need pro audio I'll buy a mic with zero latency monitoring for the headphones. Do I want all those built in? No, or else I'd just buy the S5II. But thats not what I want. I wanna be able to use it with my Scorp Mini.
Brilliantly refreshing, Ed! A perfectly balanced take on the camera, understanding its limitations, whilst pointing out its uses and customer base. Cameras don't always have to make sense to everyone, but it is good to discuss. Spot on. I do agree that if it was priced a bit lower, nobody would be questioning it. And I do think you've touched on something nobody is really talking about here, which is that there is a lot of hype for Lumix's flagship line, and the community is very desperate to see the next gen so the S9 really does feel like a backward step in that anticipation, but alas, we have faith! And given the price drops on the S5 series, it'll be interesting to see if the same happens to the S9.
Thanks man! Loved sitting down and just sharing my thoughts with no script. If money were no object, I would hands down love an S9 in my back pocket! I'm sure they will also update the record limits and allow the user to risk overheating. My take - with all the latest LUMIX releases we've seen over the last 18 months LUMIX have been introducing new features (AF, IBIS, ArriLogC etc etc) I think these are all being introduced one by one so they can be tested and refined so they can be brought together in a very polished new flagship. I'd expect to see the Arri LogC feature to be rolled out across their existing line soon.
As someone with a large amount of L mount gear. I would have bought it as a photography camera if it had an EVF OR if the sensors readout was faster. For video I would have purchased it as a gimbal camera if it had RAW over HDMI. A slightly less compromised camera at this size would be a dream, but they cut to many corners for me.
All valid points! It's certainly a confusing little camera, but still very capable! I think it'll be a hit with a certain group of people and it'll sell well. I think I'd get used to the the EVF over time... But it definitely felt jarring at first. No RAW for me is fine (esp. for a cam in this form factor), and I think it's still a great gimbal cam in spite of that.
I'm a Xpro 2 shooter and I am going to buy the s5MK2 (i'm in love with it) the S9 makes so much if you're coming from a phone or have a Lumix camera already. To take S5Mk2 video in a small format is wild - people want perfection. It does not exist. Imagine the videos in a few years time when this loses value in the second hand market. Great video Ed!
Here's my take (context; I'm a Sony user): The hate on Lumix S9 is just so unnecessary. I miss the day reviewers reviewing a product in the eyes of what the product's target audience are intended to, instead of in the eyes of professional users. So far the reviews that I've been seeing online (esp. RUclips) have been unfair mostly due to the reason above. Lumix S9 is not a perfect camera, that's super obvious already. No EVF, no grip, no mechanical shutter, and most of the "basic" stuffs required by a professional. This is true. But this is a camera targeted at modern content creators that are geared more to making cinematic-like (not cinematic, there's a difference) videos & aesthetic-looking stills as easy as possible, while still having an access to most (not all) of the pro features (of Lumix S5II) should they need to step-up their game & hone their content creation craft. All while looking good at doing it. These are the audience that preferred to compose, shoot, edit, and share on a screen be it a smartphone or a laptop/PC, and this audience grew so much for the last few years. It is absolutely perfect for those kinds of audience, but not for us professionals. And yet, many reviewers are ignoring the obvious, and treated the camera as the biggest insult to pro users the world has ever seen lol I really don't get it.
Great video mate, all of your points are totally understandable and I found your take on the whole thing very refreshing. I think the S9 has exceeded expectations in terms of Pre-Orders too, so I definitely don’t think they’ve got a flop on their hands either ✌🏻
Awesome video Ed. As someone who has multiple S5 II s’ what I don’t have is a fun camera for quick capture of family, travel & social marketing. Bro, I love my S5 II but they are for work, I never feel compelled to grab one for personal travel… not saying losing the S9 while traveling won’t hurt… it’s just feels like if my S5 ii was damaged or stolen I would be “ill”…..so I’ve been on the hunt for a smaller fun content creation camera (most coming in around $1200 to $1500 also) that would give me a feel of my S5 II. My pause has been, I want a fun photo cam but I don’t want to carry a second camera for video. Throughout the whole Internet fuss over the S9 my mind was like, “but I could use it for this or I could use it for that and if I really needed unlimited recording I could just connect it to this for that timeframe”. I just saw the positives in something like an S9 but the Internet hate was real for sure 😂 If I can catch it on Sale at some point I will definitely get one (not sold on the $1499 price tag 😒😅). But it was cool to hear it from you without the Internet Leverage.
I think it's a super capable camera and agreed on all your points on the "work" camera. I'm on holiday now and I didn't wana bring my Komodo or S5 iiX. The Fuji has been so MUCH fun and so low effort. I'm sure the S9 would have been just as fun to be honest. Me personally at that price I would want an EVF I think... Like I say, I'm sure I'd get used to not having one!
After so many years on youtube a lot, this is the first time I've seen one of your videos. How is that even possible? Why are there so many filmmakers and photographers that are great on youtube and so few artist like painters and songwriters? Its unbelievable. This video is so beautiful in so many ways.
On my phone? Have no idea, it's a pixel 6 so I've had it for years... Probably one from Google that bought at same time as phone. The Osmo is a bit of a revelation to me... I have a few vids in the works about that and am developing a LUT and powergrade for it
My S5 is a brilliant camera but since the introduction of S5II it's re-sale value is very low. I am leaning towards keeping it and adding the S9 as a second camera. Seems like a superb choice for gimbal work and b-roll. Also fun for every day adventures. That said my trusty GX85 has never disappointed.
As always, love your work Ed! Around @15:00 …hahaha! Nailed it! I 💯 adore my S5iiX but I really wanted that launch to be something like the S5iiX with a global shutter so I don’t have to buy a Komodo, and internal ND as well…just like all the leak sites had been claiming. Then the S9 came and it felt like a prank! Lol. The Fuji looks like fun. Enjoy your hols Ed ☺️
Yeah I think that was it! Hopefully all these new releases have been for road testing the new tech for the eventual flagship! Hol is fab so far and so is the Fuji!
I'm very happy with my X100v so far, but yes the S9 images are much higher res. Thats not always a good thing... imo images can often come out looking a bit too sharp and clinical SOOC, but the LUT library can help with that!
I just got my S9 this weekend. It's a fun camera. It's going to require me to adapt to not having an EVF at all, which I do wish it had. However I guess a positive way to look at it is it's forcing me to shoot differently. The expansion of the Realtime LUT feature is a creative powerhouse. Despite its shortcomings I found it to be a great compact carry tool (despite the 20-60 size) specifically for high quality, out & about street photos. If Panasonic continues to develop the platform & produces a few high quality, fast aperture, micro sized/pancake, autofocus, FF lenses lenses for it, the S9 might end up being legendary.
I agree! Needs a few tiny AF lenses and it'd be a killer proposition... That's why it's so confusing they didn't release alongside it! Have fun with it!
@@EdProsser this might have to do with them trying to capture some of the X100VI market (i think this was a bad strategy, trying to target it to that xamera, and it was evident that that was the aim as pretty much everyone that went to Japan compared or attempted to compare it to the X100VI). So they released it before they were ready , even the launch of the pancake zoom is confusing.
@@EdProsser yes during the daylight. I really find indoor lighting insufficient unless I can do higher ISO and an open aperture. Flashes really come in handy. Even phones have a flash. They should have made a hotshoe.
I think this is along the lines of what I say. Of course price is a very personal judgement. I guess my thinking is could it have been cheaper with fewer features? Does it need all of these pro features? Like I say, it's a confusing camera, but not a bad one! GH7 again, you're getting a lot of camera for that price, but a lot of people view the smaller sensor size as a negative, which it doesn't have to be. I'm shooting on one at the mo so will share my full thoughts in a few weeks.
It kind of reminds me of my old Pana GM1, which seems like the m43 predecessor of it. I really enjoyed it as a casual holiday camera that I could sneak onto other video jobs as an extra angle. I think people miss the point with these sorts of cameras... it's small enough that you can take pictures of your friends and family without them clamming up and feel like they're being papped. It's then got as many modern features as they could cram in up to the point of it overheating. I think it's better they added the features with the caveat that I won't go all day, rather than gimping the features from the get go! The cost won't be such an issue once it goes on sale like Lumix cameras always seem to be lol.
Yeah I think the approach to limit record times is a much more sensible and professional route. They could possibly add a firmware update that lifts the limit at the users own risk though... And great point about not intimidating casual photography subjects with a smaller camera, I agree! I think shooting without an EVF also helps that as you can maintain eye contact with your subjects
I bought a black S9, 'body only'. It arrived today and for me, like others here, it will be a discrete, small street camera. The lenses I will use, as for my S5, the 45mm f2.8 Sigma, Sigma 24mm f3.5 and the Lumix 20-60 kit lens. I got mine from Cotswold cameras for £1099. All works fine. I am not a content creator and will use for stills primarily. I would have liked an EVF, but used to get great shots with an XF10, so should be okay. Might take a look at the funky little 18-40mm zoom due for release soon.
6 months after Sony launched its A7C it launched three small/primes: 24mm, 40mm & 50mm. Panasonic isn’t so photographer basis but presumably is working on some lenses to compliment the S9
I believe so! Just curious why it didn't launch them with the camera... but perhaps it's another PR opportunity to keep the camera in the press several months later
I was actually surprised they squeezed a FF sensor in, I was expecting some new S35 / APS-C sensor in this tiny camera. But yes a tiny MFT cam with all these features (maybe an EVF too!) would be great
@@EdProsser Indeed, I have the GH6, GH5S and GH5 already for portable jobs so it’s tempting. As a video camera I like the size of them, but for photo it’s quite chunky
@@98JamesNixon I started off with the GH3 and the GH4 was the first camera I bought myself for professional work. very fond of the GH series and wish I'd held onto my GH4 for posterity's sake!
What Brand new Camera isn't considered overpriced by almost everyone. The problem lies with so many folks targeting the Panasonic S9 while praising other similar, supposed overpriced Camera Gear. One specific Ytuber comes to mind and HE started all this mess claiming everything Needs to Change. He didn't change nor did mostly anyone else. Especially seeing how he was the problem to begin with. He didn't get invited to the Panasonic event so instead he decided to spread all his Toxic Hate throughout the entire ytube Community. Yet Panasonic sent him a GH7 for testing. That Dude is the biggest Problem concerning Camera Gear Reviews. But he gets a FREE Pass.
I don't believe any review is ever objective, everyone has a bias - that's kinda the point though, people want to hear someone's specific take on a camera. Had I been invited to Japan I would absolutely have gone, I've never been, and it would cost me a lot to fly myself out there for a holiday. I also watched a lot of those Japan attendees reviews and they were all pretty upfront with limitations and drawbacks of the camera. So I don't understand the fuss around all that. I think elitism is still very much alive and well in the RUclips community and shock horror it's being perpetuated by older white dudes as it is in nearly every other industry.
S5ii owner.. Strictly considering the S9 as a second / backup body for quick or casual shoots, travel also. Sigma 45mm 2.8 is in my crosshairs as well.
@@EdProsser UPDATE: S9 has been purchased, Sigma 45mm has been purchased.. I have been shooting, completed videos, uploaded on my page. Loving the S9 !
I get everything you are saying! I have the GX80 MFT camera that I use to film the travel videos and I had to upgrade to the S5iix. Panasonic had no rangefinder body with a full-frame sensor. The G9 would have been perfect if it had a viewfinder because in many instances I film outside and it's very hard to see anything on the lcd screen. This makes me even more securein the uppgrade that I made to the S5iix even if it's bulkier, but at least I have everything I need and If I feel it's too much, I use the GX80 for backup footage. (the only problem is that I cannot adapt lenses from the L mount to the MFT one and I have to have two sets of them with me) Ed, thank you for the information in this video as always. The funny thing it that I come here to see what you are up to and after that I check what you are reviewing :)) Keep it going!
The biggest shame is there's no cross compatibility between MFT and L mount. Unless you adapt lenses! Currently testing out the GH7 so expect a review on that soon!
@@EdProsser Exactly, the only way I woud've used the same glass on the two sistems would've been through something like EF glass and adapt them...both 😂 Can't wait for the GH7 review 😁
I kinda want this for a quick B cam for handheld closeups on event shoot days. Where I literally have it on a camera sling around me at all times and use my 85mm. I’m personally on the “should be less expensive” side than more expensive with more features
Yeah I do hope they provide a software update to allow users to disable the limits at their own risk. I know there are third party external fans available that could potentially extend the record limits
The bit about platform longevity is the one thing that nobody talks about and everybody should. Everything points to the S9 attempting to be Panasonc's answer to the X100VI. The lumix lab is their attempt to capitalise on the Film Recipes bandwagon. This is the camera's USP and why so many (including me) are willing to overlook the compromises. If that fails this camera has mostly failed. I am hopeful though as the new GH is also compatible with it and I am almost certain the S5II and S5IIx will gain compatibility too. Great take on the camera btw probably one of best ones out there.
Yeah time will tell! LUMIX could also really do with improving and redeveloping their remote camera app too. Can't believe it's 2024 and most popular camera brands have garbage apps for remote camera control.
It's an option! But I didn't have one long enough to try. I think if it helped overcome one of my main gripes then that'd be cool, but honestly I was really in the market for something more stills orientated, I feel like I have lots of options for video which I'm happy with. The S9 didn't tick enough of my boxes to persuade me to buy one.
@@EdProsser Totally understand, I really wound't pay over 1.2K if I already had a S5IIX. Since this is my first ever Panasonic, I feel over the moon. I hope this goes down in price in a bit....but I wouldn't count on it soon. I've heard from Panasonic the S9 is doing big numbers.
I use a A7R5 for stills and video, almost all vertical these days for social media accounts. I shoot 1080 50 and 100, but want a second camera for a few reasons. One I'd like a less imposing camera and two I'd love some Panasonic stabilisation because I hate gimbals. So I'm thinking of picking up a S9 when the new zoom comes out, I'm hoping the price will have dropped by then, or one of the grey importers will get stock in. (Panamoz is my favourite, I've bought two cameras from them).
I finally had a chance to handle an S9 today and two things turn it into a “no” for me. First the cheesy dial and buttons on the back which feel like they will not last a year. The other is having the USB-C on the “wrong” side of the camera. It clears the flip screen of course, but then you have cables sticking out of the camera on the grip side! Yuck.
Love your content man! I own a S1, it's an amazing camera but huge and the autofocus sucks. Now I'm looking for a smaller camera, like for a B-cam or when I just don't want to lug around the heavy S1. I was thinking about buying a S5II or S5IIX, but that feels like a replacement - which I'm not looking for. I think the S9 would be perfect for me, it's kind of a tiny S1 I guess. Let me put it like this: if there were more tiny L mount lenses or pancake options, I'm quite sure I'd buy it. Because I love the L mount system. But right now I'm just not sure and also wondering about a Fujifilm, whether it's the 100V or the X-E4. I want something compact!
I picked up the x100v and I love it! But it's very much a stills only experience. There are some smaller lenses on the way I believe and I think sigma also have some small primes...
@@EdProsser yeah and I think 1600 for a single lens stills camera is a bit much… i really hope more smaller lenses are coming… btw, I really dont understand why you’re not a lumix Ambassador of why they havent flown you out. You are one of my main Panasonic inspirations
Haha thanks man! Yeah I wish they'd fly me out too! I think they're more interested in people who will just toe the line and pump out weekly vids about the brand which I guess this channel doesn't do.
@@EdProsser haha yeah probably. It’s funny that brands don’t seem to realise that I, and many other buyers, are much more persuaded by honest reviewers that also give critisism, because I will believe their praise a lot sooner.
I think LUMIX has dropped the ball a little bit with their marketing and I think it's why other brands still have the edge over them when it comes to consumer perception with brands like Sony who I think are much more aggressive with their influencer marketing. I wasn't offered a review loaner for this camera, and even after asking them they'd only send me one for a very limited time so I couldn't make an in depth review vid like I normally would. If I can find one cheap I may buy one as I genuinely think it'd be great for making RUclips content - I just think the launch price is a little steep for me at the moment...
Do you think this cam is a better buy than the zve1 for beginner content creators looking for a single lens 18mm setup for handheld run and gun? Or if i have the osmo p3 already do you think this camera and rhe zve1 are not worth it? I have divinci and your powergrade, looking for pristine picture quality and ideally a single camera setup
The Osmo P3 is a great travel cam but the S9 is a massive step up with features and image quality. I actually saw an S9 on offer for £1099 in the UK and I am VERY tempted - mainly for my RUclips and content creation work where the S5 iix is sometimes too bulky! In terms of the zve1, I think the S9 is probably superior, but you pay the extra for it. I don't think you can go wrong with either though!
They fucked up with the S9, they should have done a LX100iii with the G9ii Sensor and Processor. Simple fact they would have crushed the compact camera industry.
I think this seems to be the dividing factor for many, honestly I've never used a flash so it probably wouldn't bother me, I understand why it'd be a red line for others.
@@EdProsser yeah me too as I mainly do video but on my Fuji I’ve realized that having a flash just gives you the versatility to shoot in any condition! Not major but it would def be better with it. It’s an easy fix though on the next model
For a lot of RUclips Videos you will need an overhead camera so that you are being recorded from 3 different positions as explained in detail by Gerald Undone’s youtube channel & i think that the Lumix S 9 is a big ste up from the Fuji XT4, i hope that i recalled that model # correctly. The Great Waiting game for a lot of us is there going to be a Sony A 7 S 4 & if then will it be released ?
Love that you threw those insane anamorphics on this camera hahaha. You're the man Ed! I'm waiting for a discounted price and then I'm going to hop on it
Yeah you're right, I think it'll be great for a lot of people. For me I didn't need the video feature and wanted a more "pure" stills experience that's why I went with the X100V
For professional work, the S5ix is better suited. For family photos and videos, the A7C2 is better suited. If I were considering a purchase, I'd rather go with the A6700 if I could afford the price.
@@EdProsser Oh, sorry. I'm not an English speaker and misunderstood your simple question. I think this is a camera aimed at the ZV-E1, but the lenses used with it make it difficult to be compact. I think it's hard for a photographer to get a camera that can't even sync with flash. Sony cameras have everything, some things are just too minimalistic (EVF, grip, etc). The S9 has a certain appeal, but when it comes down to it, I don't think it's a camera that you can choose from any position. I think it's going to have a very limited audience. So the prediction that this camera will sell well is interesting to me.
@@WES-pt2ho no need to apologise. Thanks, have heard a lot about the ZV-E1 but never seen one in the flesh. Re: flash yeah I think it divides people - myself - I never use one and for a camera like this - I wouldn't expect to pair it with one. I bought the X100V recently - I'll never use if with a flash but it does have the OVF / EVF which is why I went for it. The camera has been reported out of stock and pre-orders have apparently exceeded expectations is what I'm hearing.
@@EdProsser Thank you for your generosity. s9 hasn't been released in my country yet, I'm curious to see how it will be received. As always, thanks for the awesome information.
According to a couple of experienced reviewers who went to the S9 launch in Japan something else WAS going to be launched by Panasonic but it got pulled at the last moment. The audiences of the reviewers who were invited were largely not the target market for the S9 camera shaped object. Strike One Panasonic. Strike Two was a good chunk of the younger reviewers glossing over the significant compromises and limitations of this particular camera shaped object and blowing smoke up Panasonics rear end. The older reviewers - PetaPixel, Gordon Laing, Kai and Lok, managed to be critical in a diplomatic way and not describe the S9 as 'perfect' or 'near perfect'. In my opinion the anger wasn't directed at the camera shaped object as such but the perceived shilling by some channels
I watched a lot of reviews from those who attended the event, they were all pretty upfront with the limitations, I just find it odd that people keep saying that. I'm not sure I really buy that another camera was meant to be announced? The S9 was rumored for a while leading up to the event and of course they had all the marketing materials and app which would have been set in motion way ahead of the event. I never saw this level of outrage directed at cameras lacking features from the likes of Sony and Canon. Thats why I think it feels so odd to people standing back and observing it all.
@@EdProsser I drooled over the v way before any hype was even present but couldn’t get over that price of $1300/1400. Ended up getting the iiix and it’s been a part of the family ever since. Though I think the iii would’ve fit better for my use. I ended up getting the q2 and thought it was gonna replace my iiix. While the image quality definitely reigns supreme to me, I would always grab the iiix for its size. Hope you pick it up soon!
It's an excellent camera for those who travel a lot, for those who want to post content on social media quickly and more professionally - it's totally dedicated to this group, with all the capabilities of the Lumix S5II +/- . it can easily be a super smartphone. That said, I'm not sure if it was the right step for Lumix. It would have been much more important to introduce a LUMIX S5IIX with at least 4k60, no crop. And finally, to announce new third-party lenses, it was mentioned that Samyang would join the L Mount alliance and finally deliver AF lenses, but it's been two years since then. By doing this, Lumix could easily compete with Sony.
@@EdProsserI understand that, and I love my Lumix S5IIX, but as a wedding videographer, I miss having more freedom with slow motion, especially in less interesting weddings where I need to fill video time. I would trade 6k30 for 4k60 without a crop in a heartbeat. But without a doubt, the S5IIX offers the most video features on the market for the price.
This camera is definitely an oddball in that it's simultaneously amazing yet significantly limited lol. It does look fun though. I'd never purchase it as it doesn't have an e-mount but in 20 years kids will be searching for those super niche retro s9 cameras for sure lol. Maybe they'll even collect all the colors. I think that the camera community needs to take a step back though and view this as a significant technological moment for lumix. The S9 isn't important because it's the perfect camera that solved everybody's problems. It's important because it's ushering in a technological shift and an evolutionary moment for lumix. Lumix is looking imperfect yet newly competitive and photographers will benefit from that down the line.
Great points! Yeah LUMIX finally has a huge roster of cameras after a bit of a drout.... And so true to think that kids in the future are gonna be paying through the nose for this "retro" camera haha.
Genuinely curious, because you said "it can do things other cameras can't, and can't do things other cameras can"...what can the S9 do that the S5II or S5IIx can't? That was my main issue was that it is so close in price to probably the best value mirrorless camera ever made... Anyway, just curious, that is the most confusing thing about the S9, the same company makes a much better value, that is more capable, at almost the same price. And even for anamorphic support, especially for anamorphic support, the lens weighs like 4x the camera, is the 250 grams saved in the body really the selling point here? So, i'm not hating on Panasonic, I think they make the best camera for beginners all the way to professionals, and it boggles my mind, I cannot think of any reason why I would ever want the S9 over the S5II.
It can fit in your pocket / has a much smaller form factor than the larger S5ii which for a lot of people that's a deal breaker. In terms of other brands not sure there are any compact cameras this size with the combination of IBIS, AF, recording modes and anamorphic features. The anamorphic vid I made with the large orions was a joke. But more seriously you could combine it with the tiny SIRUI Saturn anamorphics and they'd be a pretty nice compact pairing.
@@EdProsser I agree it would be compact, but no longer pocketable, I would wager... I am not saying there are no small full frame lenses, but unless you use the F/8 MF pancake, I don't see this being pocketable anymore. Again, the S5II is ~250 grams more than the S9, we are not talking about carrying around a BMCC 6k...I will admit the S5II is quite a bit bulkier. My other thoughts were very similar to yours, you wanted a photo-centric camera, and realized that the S9 wasn't really for you, the (arguably worse in many ways) X100V was more specialized and able to handle that one job better. At 1500, I don't see why I wouldn't just reach a tiny bit more to get something with no compromise, its too close to better options. If you were planning on doing video mainly, you would run into the same thing when comparing it to the ZV-E1 (another great example of a camera that stripped a LOT compared to the A7SIII, but still managed to excel at its one job). The S9 could arguably take better video, but it won't be nearly as convenient or useful. So, you can niche down, and find something better suited to your specific needs or you can get a better all around camera that is larger, but literally has none of the sacrifices. I mean, just think of it this way, if I could only use one camera for the next week/month/year...which would I choose? If I were running out the door and didn't know what I would need, I would always pick the S5II. That is why the only spot that the S9 really fits is for fun, you already have your photo-centric needs met, you already have your video-centric needs met, you are looking for something fun where it doesn't matter. So basically the segment of people who own a bunch of cameras and want something with a little soul (but not Fuji or film). Like give me 10% more "soul" and "creativity" than my Sony. I would relate to the "tech enthusiast" dad camera segment, and there is no way anyone who likes tech and compares and geeks out on specs would pick such a bad deal. That is the same segment that compares the horsepower between a Rivian and a Cybertruck and will never take either off road or on track. That is practically their defining feature. I just view the S5II as more "future-proof", in that if I were to want to film a basketball game, I could leave the camera running. If I were to want to take family portraits, I could connect a flash. If I were to X, the S5II has Y and the S9 doesn't. But again, that is why we all get to choose whatever we like. So no hate to anyone that feels differently. I just wanted to share my opinion, and genuinely try to understand why people would want something that seems like such a terrible deal to me, I think that is what caused all the controversy, is that to some this looks like literally throwing money away, and to others they think it's the best deal on the planet.
@@MaximoJoshua nice take! And thanks for adding to the conversation respectfully. I think we all have different needs and preferences and to some the LUMIX S9 is a perfect cam, to others it's not! Same with any cam really! Some people love the black magic pocket line (I can't get over the form factor) and some people love the A7siii and FX6 and I'm not a fan of either of those cams. It doesn't mean any of them are objectively "bad" as I know I could create amazing images on all of them.
@@MaximoJoshuaZVE1 is $2200 versus $1500 so that’s quite a big jump to compare evenly. I’ll simplify it all for you… Pocektable street video/stills with buttery smooth IBIS and decent autofocus for less than anything else out there. Small Leica M mount lenses on this little guy are awesome. It might not fit your style but It’s perfect for others.
@@phoenixprjct but its L Mount...are you adapting it, or are those cross-compatible? I can see it being useful for street photography stuff, but I would say the S5II can do the exact same thing, at the cost of 250 additional grams, and and maybe 5cm more in depth (which may be enough for some).
Tbh if I could spare the money I’d love to have this camera as just an every day carry to complement my s5iix and take out and about more easily, deffo think the x100v is the better choice though
Yeah, I think the S9 would be ideal for a lot of my RUclips work... But like you can't justify it. The X100V offers a diff experience and gives me a break from video which is what I want. Loving it so far.
@@OscarCloud I'm really enjoying them. It's getting me back into stills... Which I've just neglected doing since I started doing this RUclips thing - that used to be my little stress reliever hobby and it's fun to have an uncomplicated little camera with a fixed lens to just walk around with - and I can just wirelessly transfer jpgs to share on socials or with friends with no Lightroom workflow needed which is great.
I am going to pick up an S9 as a C cam as soon as they go on sale or used here in the US at the $1,000/$1,2000 price point. It’s funny how psychological that extra $200 - $500 is when buying a camera body but then we will grab a $750 lens for it or a $500 accessory no problem.
Unlikely unless it's a "dumb" optical viewfinder. Which I'm sure you can already buy (generic third party) No hot shoe means no power or communication with the camera.
@@EdProsser AHH Sorry, I thought it had a hot shoe🙈 unfortunately I can't live without a viewfinder, so I'll have to wait for another model 😁👍 thanks for the video 🙏
it's an amazing camera but release price is always very high from panasonic, im expecting it to drop 200-300euros in a year and maybe i'll pick one up then.
I hate not having a viewfinder. I maybe only use my lcd screen when Im forced to when in an awkward position while shooting photos. I also vastly prefer evfs for videos. Id love a gr3, but I'd love a gr4 with a popup evf akin to the rx100 series even more.
I don't think this is for me. That being said I don't understand the hate that this has gotten. People seem to be really made at it for not being a Fujifilm or something. I don't get why people get so wound up about these things. No one's forced to buy it.
Yeah I think it's the build up of hype for the next Panasonic flagship and everyone thought this was gonna be it so stuff exploded haha. No excuse for it though, I think more and more people struggle to consider the fact that there are other opinions outside of their bubble.
I find it funny content creators bending over backwards telling us it's not a bad camera it's just confusing, you tried using it for it's intended purpose but didn't like it and you don't want to buy it but let me repeat again it's not a bad camera.
I'm not bending over backwards, it's my opinion. Not everything is so black and white. I used it and didn't hate it. If I did, I'd just say that! It's capable of creating some stunning images in a tiny form factor. But I already have an S5iix! If I didn't, it'd make more sense to me.
@@EdProsser That's low bar. Any modern camera, including smart phones can take good pictures. Sorry I won't get you in trouble with your sponsors. It's not a bad camera *wink *wink.
Small sigma 24mm or/17mm lense on this and you have a 4k video camera that doesn't need a gimble and you don't draw any!! Attention to you soo it will allow you take video of things you just can't with a camera with big body and huge lense. It's a FENOMINAL option
Edd my good man I'm in a right pickle I need the Lumix ibis(S511x) but what you said about the camera struggling with high contrast lighting scenarios on figures faces when strong light is behind it!! This Is how I light my videos I'm filming myself and my painting proces, I ain't gonna be behind the camera to focus manually also another review says you get muddy results shooting with artificial and led lights together (the diff temperatures) unless you shoot in raw. This isn't going to work for someone like me is it?
You haven't seen anything this powerful in this form factor, really? You haven't seen the ZVE1 aka FX3 aka S7iii aka FX6? All same sensor different form factors etc but same professional video.
All more expensive and don't have many features the LUMIX has... Open gate, anamorphic IBIS and de-squeeze... Pretty sure the FX3 only just got shutter angle?
True, but I'd argue irrelevant. If you want those features you don't want the s9. The zve1 has more than enough features for most people wanting the very best video quality and 4k without crop up to 60fps and only 10% crop on 120fps. I like you also bought the X100V , only a 1 and half year wait. 1000 times more enjoyable than the s9 will ever be. I also own the zve1 which when the s9 came out I realised was actually a stills camera lol.
End of August price has dropped.. Needs revisiting .. deeper detail uploading to a phone ..easy ,.quick .. S9 with pancake 28mm it's phone size X2 thickness .. providing phone has pro edit cropping possible ... Is it a Leica Q2/Q3 at a quarter of the price ?? .. Conclusion it's reaching £900 .. + lens ... It's less than a pro phone .. if it can upload vids quickly easily to phone for a quick edit .. it's small and carries easily .. Have a revisit please .. I enjoyed the alternate viewpoint
I would have loved to have done a more in depth video but unfortunately Panasonic would not let me have the camera long enough to do this, which is a shame! Where are you seeing the camera for £900? I might consider buying one for that to make the video.
@@EdProsser I'm finding adverts around £1250 with a lens .. prices are seasonal .. march S5 Ii body used mint was £1100 .. S9 has to drop to £1000 mint used.. from dealers .. My opinion S9 is better for most use cases than traditional designed camera style.. it's a Q series Leica video orientated.. unlike Qs.. Flip screen is far better for glare control/ composing than a phones .
@@r.s.w.k4569 nah definitely not that, but around the £850 - £1000 mark for what you get. I'd argue they could have stripped out a lot of features and got it down to £500.
How 'bout the SONY ZV-E1 which I would say this is that..same type camera/same form factor-function.. the only real difference is price, but SONY for now has the edge on adequate lenses you'd think to pair with something like this to maintain the form factor, but it's only a matter of time (Sony still has work to do in the compact, pancake style lens type..please 🙏)
Imagine being so dumb as to shade the creator for being boring. THEN ASKING these questions when there are also TIMESTAMPS that you could have skipped to. You sad mushy banana of a person
I disagree, it will be a flop! For photography no flash is a big error by Lumix, how do you do indoor work without expensive fast lenses? Even then, is the AF good enough? Do you think Tik tokers will buy fast glass. In video this camera is better suited, especially now the record limit has been removed. But for me no 50/60fps in open gate, any compression will close the door for many. It just doesn't hit the mark for many people. Then if you are new to Lumix, you need an adapter, and these don't work well with AF, this adds another few hundred to the price. The kit lenses are really bad. Sorry.
Lots of people use continuous lighting these days esp. content creators - and budget lights from the likes of Amaran et al. are ten a penny. It wont be for the pro photographers, but it's not really designed for that. I think it's actually sold okay to be fair to them. I'm actually thinking of picking one up at some point as it'd be great for my RUclips work.
@EdProsser i am thinking of picking one up for anamorphic too, but continuous lighting although fantastic can't match the power to size for light when doing stills. Any cheap flash will give good results, continuous lights don't throw the same light. Also the smart hot key can be used for smart mics. I get there is work arounds, but I still believe it is a big fail to leave off a hotshoe.
I picked one up for anamorphic use, and it did the job I wanted it to do amazingly. But I returned it as the card slot failed. The camera feels very cheap to me and I am intending to swap it for the S5ii. If this camera had a little flash or could fit a little flash and the build quality was better, Panasonic would have had an amazing little camera at this price point. The vlog images out of this camera were very pleasing 👌 I have to say....
Sure, but RF lenses are more expensive and canon doesn't allow third parties to make lenses - no IBIS and the camera is famous for overheating and shutting down... But you gain an EVF and hot shoe. All these cams have negs and advantages which will appeal to diff users.
it takes pictures, it is for photographers, maybe it is not suitable for your type/needs of photography but people were and still are using tiny cameras with barely any features other than a shutter button and a crammy post stamp sized screens. Dunno, I loved the time when we were embracing and applauding the quirky (coolpix 990 anyone) and didn't hate on everything just cause.
This was recorded last week! So I'm on my holiday NOW 🎉🎉🎉
@@KofiYeboah haha yes. I start sweating buckets when I have to use an FX6 on a pro job and have to find something in the settings under pressure 🤣
Nice! I think there will be a lot of people like you who are gonna love this camera!
why not sony A7CII then?
@@wouldoox8024 I want the LUT feature and IBIS.
Thanks! Yes the quality you can draw from this tiny camera is incredible. Picking one up for 700-900 in a few years would be amazing
Here's my take (context; I'm a Sony user):
The hate on Lumix S9 is just so unnecessary.
Nice take and I'm pretty much in agreement!
Great video mate, all of your points are totally understandable and I found your take on the whole thing very refreshing.
I think the S9 has exceeded expectations in terms of Pre-Orders too, so I definitely don’t think they’ve got a flop on their hands either ✌🏻
Thanks man, I think it will sell very well! If I could afford one I'd probably pick one up! Either way, I think it's a very capable little camera...
I just saw the positives in something like an S9 but the Internet hate was real for sure 😂
If I can catch it on Sale at some point I will definitely get one (not sold on the $1499 price tag 😒😅).
Enjoy your Holiday Ed and Safe Travels Brother.
Dadcam man right here
Love it
After so many years on youtube a lot, this is the first time I've seen one of your videos. How is that even possible? Why are there so many filmmakers and photographers that are great on youtube and so few artist like painters and songwriters? Its unbelievable. This video is so beautiful in so many ways.
Glad you stumbled upon my channel!
A really good, balanced take. I got one as an everyday carry for when I don’t want to take the S5ii around with me.
What case do you have on your pixel? Interesting video. I was shocked with Osmo footage!
To my dad-cam untrained eye, the x100 pics look like paused video, whereas S9 pics look like actual photos. Certainly why it caught my attention.
Lack of hotshoe basically kills the ability to do unplanned indoor photography.
@@rickshapiro63 unless you have windows or any form of lighting...
@@EdProsser yes during the daylight. I really find indoor lighting insufficient unless I can do higher ISO and an open aperture. Flashes really come in handy. Even phones have a flash. They should have made a hotshoe.
I don't think that it's overpriced. It's a full-frame camera with a great sensor despite the limitations. GH7 on the other hand...
I’m loving the still images I’m getting out of the S9 and the video is incredible. That fact that it’s funky and weird is a bonus.
Hahaha good! It's a super super capable camera in a tiny package.
Yeah that's where I've seen it avail and am considering it too! But the rumours of a new LUMIX flagship by the end of the year have made me pause.
I'm so tempted...
@@EdProsser One line of thought: sell some cameras to build up demand for the lenses
It’s funny, when you described dad cam theory, you described me perfectly. lol. Didn’t know I was a thing. And I AM interested in this camera.
Hahaha the theory has become fact!
Great review Ed, very balanced!
Thanks Em!
I would love to see a Micro four thirds version of this at under a grand. Seems like a no brainer for panasonic surely?
I was actually surprised they squeezed a FF sensor in, I was expecting some new S35 / APS-C sensor in this tiny camera. But yes a tiny MFT cam with all these features (maybe an EVF too!) would be great
@@EdProsser definitely, we need more smaller micro four thirds travel cameras. The GH7 and G9 mk2 are massive haha
@@98JamesNixon Currently testing the GH7 it definitely is a BEAST but it feels good in the hands.
@@EdProsser Indeed, I have the GH6, GH5S and GH5 already for portable jobs so it’s tempting.
As a video camera I like the size of them, but for photo it’s quite chunky

I think it'll be great for that
@@EdProsser UPDATE: S9 has been purchased, Sigma 45mm has been purchased.. I have been shooting, completed videos, uploaded on my page. Loving the S9 !
@@TopshelfJunior it's good to hear from someone using it and enjoying it!
Reasonable and balanced commentary. Thanks
No problem, as always the reality of any situation is nuanced!
(the only problem is that I cannot adapt lenses from the L mount to the MFT one and I have to have two sets of them with me)
Ed, thank you for the information in this video as always.
I agree with your overheating take 100%. I can manage a record limit where I know i'm safe, rather than have a camera overheat at any given time.
Yeah I do hope they provide a software update to allow users to disable the limits at their own risk. I know there are third party external fans available that could potentially extend the record limits
@@EdProsser Having that option would be ideal!
Would you consider adding an optical EVF for your fixed focal lengths?
@@lfcruzsierra yeah that's what I'm hearing too...but time will tell how much truth is behind that.
I've used Panamoz... Years ago - think I bought my GH4 or originally A7s from then! I think the S9 is a great option as a low profile shooter
Yuck.
Yeah good that you got to test it before making a decision
I guess time will tell 🤷♂️
would be dope with hot shoe for flash. I was kinda shocked it didn't have it.
I'm waiting for a discounted price and then I'm going to hop on it
Yeah I'm with you there!
I think it's great as an alternative to something like an x100v or Leica Q3. For a "walkaround" camera, I think it's amazing.
Yeah you're right, I think it'll be great for a lot of people. For me I didn't need the video feature and wanted a more "pure" stills experience that's why I went with the X100V
For professional work, the S5ix is better suited.
For family photos and videos, the A7C2 is better suited.
If I were considering a purchase,
I'd rather go with the A6700 if I could afford the price.
Thanks for sharing what do you prefer about the Sony cams?
@@WES-pt2ho not at all, I just don't know much about them, so am interested about what people prefer etc. just a simple question!
The camera has been reported out of stock and pre-orders have apparently exceeded expectations is what I'm hearing.

s9 hasn't been released in my country yet, I'm curious to see how it will be received.
I think you might enjoy that Ricoh iii. Just think of the screen as a 3 inch evf 😊.
It's on my to buy list!! But also very much enjoying the x100v at the mo
TBH I can overlook the crop in the S5iix considering the price of that camera and what you get for it. It's never interfered with my work too much.
@@pedroferreira9858 yeah I hear ya! Can definitely see it being a limitation for some
This camera is definitely an oddball in that it's simultaneously amazing yet significantly limited lol.
It looks like a gawdy ashtray in a cheap hotel with 60 's decor.
That actually sounds kinda cool...
If it had an evf and lumix had a bigger range of compact lenses then I'd be so in to this camera as a compact every day carry. Maybe the Mark 2?
We may yet see some compact pancake lenses, but yes I wonder if a mark 2 could be a more refined option.
Lumix s9 head to head with Sony a7c mark ii

@@r.s.w.k4569 nah definitely not that, but around the £850 - £1000 mark for what you get. I'd argue they could have stripped out a lot of features and got it down to £500.
How 'bout the SONY ZV-E1 which I would say this is that..same type camera/same form factor-function.. the only real difference is price, but SONY for now has the edge on adequate lenses you'd think to pair with something like this to maintain the form factor, but it's only a matter of time (Sony still has work to do in the compact, pancake style lens type..please 🙏)
or the Sigma FP
Yeah they all offer something quite different...
Did you buy this camera? Will you buy this camera?
Did you watch this video, will you watch this video?
@@EdProsserSo sorry, the video was so boring I never made it to the end.
@@pdcorlis you'll never know the answer to your question
Imagine being so dumb as to shade the creator for being boring. THEN ASKING these questions when there are also TIMESTAMPS that you could have skipped to. You sad mushy banana of a person
Yes, overpriced. Would have bought it for commuting and filming alongside S5IIX when taking wildlife pictures but just cant justife the price.
Hopefully there will be a price drop soon
the drama with the recording time…as if once you have the footage people won’t edit 😅 hahah like who has a 1.5 hours of unedited footage !? 😂
Events and interviews could make it tricky, but I'd doubt you'd use this as your main cam for those
.. or you could just re trigger record.
I just wish it had a fan. That's it.
I believe there are third party stick on fans you can buy for the little Sony cams, maybe they'll work on this too
I disagree, it will be a flop!
Panasonic just cut too many corners.
No audio monitoring, cold shoe,no evf,not uvc, 15 minutes recordong, no compact lens...
Yeah all fair points, if it comes down in price to around £900 I'd personally consider picking one up!
WHY IS IT GRAINY?
Take an educated guess?
Mmmm You lost me? Pratteling on about your phone, S9 just missed the bus in a big way. It doesn't do much well.
It's definitely not for everyone but still a competent camera in the right hands.
electronic shutter 😑🤦♀️🤦
Some it will bother, some it will not! If I can find this cam for £900-1000 I'll most likely get it
@@EdProsser
That's a good deal, well I'm from the Netherlands, there is everything from 1700/1800 euros, even second hand is expensive enough!
Yeah it's roughly that in the UK too but there's a store that sells grey imports who have a lower price
@@EdProsser
Ah! That's always nice to have.
I wish there was one like here😑
Canon R8 the same price.
Sure, but RF lenses are more expensive and canon doesn't allow third parties to make lenses - no IBIS and the camera is famous for overheating and shutting down... But you gain an EVF and hot shoe. All these cams have negs and advantages which will appeal to diff users.
First 😂🎉
Always on time
It's not for photographers
Wouldn't buy it
Yeah not sure it's intended for high spec pro photography work
it takes pictures, it is for photographers, maybe it is not suitable for your type/needs of photography but people were and still are using tiny cameras with barely any features other than a shutter button and a crammy post stamp sized screens. Dunno, I loved the time when we were embracing and applauding the quirky (coolpix 990 anyone) and didn't hate on everything just cause.
