    To solve the ProResRAW to resolve issue:
    There’s a RAW convert program to compress the PRR to CDNG and keep both your 12 bit color depth and RAW panel in resolve. It’s not internal BRAW, and it is another step, but it saves you HDMI output and a Blackmagic recorder

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  4 месяца назад +3

      Yeah I know this is a possibility but it's just not a great workflow to have to process all that footage esp. if you have multiple shoots a week, the HDD space required to juggle this workflow is also fairly eye watering as well as the time it takes to process a day's footage.
      BRAW also just had more compression options, it's still not as versatile as RED RAW but you could probably still get away delivering BRAW to a client / editor.

    NICE. A great thorough review - especially giving explanation to speedbooster options and rolling shutter speeds, which most reviewers never mention. I've shot with Lumix since the GH4. Now, with the GH6 I've filmed broadcast spots and a ton of food shoots (240 fps is quite excellent - if the exposure is perfect).
    Our studio has since evolved to a RED V Raptor x and DJI Ronin 4D, but I will absolutely buy a GH7, slap my loyal speedbooster on it, and keep shooting. They're amazing cameras and anyone complaining that it (or really any current camera) doesn't record beautiful imagery, should assess their own skills as a creative.

    I like the video but highly disagree that you can’t get great DOF with MFT, Im too a Komodo,S5II, plus some other camera owner and have been an MFT shooter for years, I DO get the DOF I want with my GH6 and the DR it’s on par with my FF cameras, you talked about how good it is but mentioned “but the smaller sensor “ why mention it as a but ? It’s a great system and doesn’t need to be FF to be good.

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  4 месяца назад +3

      It's certainly not impossible! But a lot of people don't want to have to go the extra lengths to get all of that and some people just want the large sensor look straight out of camera. I'm not one of them, but I know lots of people are.
      In terms of sensor size, it just can't offer the same performance as many larger sensors. I did unfortunately notice this quite quickly on this camera and had to adapt my shooting. It's still capable of creating a fantastic image, you just need to be aware of how the sensor operates.

    • @AndyLSB
      @AndyLSB 4 месяца назад +2

      @@EdProsser oh yes I agree with you, it’s not the same “look” but I feel the way people talk about it it’s not a big deal, really, that’s my point really, not trying to argue about it, and you don’t have to go through so much to get it, sure the bigger sensors will give you more but there’s plenty of DOF you can achieve with MFT and about the DR I agree too, you need to know how your sensor works best but as I’ve seen with the GH6 for many years now, I never had streaking issues, DR limitations and such, it delivered as good as my other FF cameras.
      I made several tests comparing it and obviously it might not be the same but it’s so so close that it won’t affect anyone’s work really, I make videos to, and admire your work so apologies if this seems like I am arguing, I’m not, it’s just that MFT has gained a lot of bad reputation for being a “small” sensor and it’s not “pro” enough or that phones are catching up to it which they’re far far far from it, that triggers me a little because I’ve used it for so many years and not had a particular “issue” with the stuff people say but it is what it is.

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  4 месяца назад +1

      @@AndyLSB No need to apologise, I love hearing other people's takes and opinions! I agree MFT gets a bad rap and is capable of achieving GREAT images. It's largely down to the person using it!
      I do know that had I taken my S5 iiX to Palermo I would have been able to squeeze a bit more DR out of those challenging high contrast scenes and wouldn't have had to worry so much about those highlights clipping. I think it's important and honest to point that out - esp. for beginners or amateurs who are unlikely to have as strong a grasp at exposure control. In the right hands it's less of an issue though as you'll adapt your shooting style to accomodate this and still get fab images!

    As a software developer working in the field of video stabilization I can tell you these micro jitters can appear on very shallow depth of field content or when the small objects like seed pieces look to similar and the movement detection links false different objects of the two compared video frames together. Some videos can be stabilized without any failure and other video content is just failing. With some experience you can estimate when the digital stabilization fails and when not. Currently I am also working to solve this problem on my product. Post production stabilization should work more reliable. The very good IBIS from the GH7 also should reduce the jelly visual rolling shutter effect to zero.

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  4 месяца назад

      Interesting! It's strange, it seems to affect only footage over 60fps when the e-stabilisation is on. The standard IBIS is fine in higher frame rates. The judders almost looked mechanical like the IBIS system was doing something strange or fighting the e-stabilisation.

    • @AudioVideo_IT
      @AudioVideo_IT 4 месяца назад +2

      @@EdProsser So far I do know the CPU cannot process all data over 60 fps in time for perfect results. The auto focus is best at 60 Hz and above it they need to save CPU time by lowering the auto focus frequency probably slower than 30 fps. This CPU power at high rates might be also possible source of bad SW stabilization performance because the camera need to lower the tracking points in the frames to keep up with the high frame rate. Then the statistical movement errors cannot be detected and removed when too less tracking points are processed. In contrast the IBIS stabilization should need almost no CPU power. It is simply impossible to have more or equal CPU power in the camera than a up to date desktop PC with a good GPU.

    I wouldn't compare body prices between full frame and Micro 4/3. Compare whole kit prices! What does it cost to buy equivalent angle of view coverage? What does it cost to buy equivalent light gathering capability? Total cost of ownership and total kit size and weight matter a lot to many of us. What we film and photograph may benefit more from one or the other platform. Choosing cameras should not be as cavalier as, "Full frame is God." Just as Fujifilm has medium format and APS-C cameras, Lumix has full frame and Micro 4/3 cameras. Each format serves a different user base with different features and benefits. The GH7 is an ideal replacement for those of us with older GH cameras.

      as a fuji and canon owner, here are my thoughts. I love fuji better, the styling, colors, user experience. but canon is better both in performance and price. if you get lenses for apsc or m43 and you try to match the performance in full frame terms, it is not cost effective. for example, on fuji I own 3rd party f1.2 lenses, each lenses cost around $500-$700. but f1.2 on apsc is equivalent to f1.8 on full frame, which is like $200-$400 first party lenses. in the end, for performance equivalent lenses, full frame is cheaper. If the crop sensor body is more expensive than full frame body, then it's tough news. you will never find crop lenses that perform as fast as ff lenses

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  4 месяца назад +1

      I think many first time and casual users will be doing just that, comparing prices of the camera bodies and making their decisions from there.
      It is the more experienced user who has a more targeted requirement who will probably do a more nuanced costing of kit.
      I think what many of us want are the features and tools in the GH7 in a full frame body. We're ready for a new LUMIX flagship. The benefit of a large sensor camera is you have the flexibility to choose between the large sensor look or cropping in on the sensor.
      I am not in the 'full frame is god' camp I shot for many years on MFT cameras and my main camera is a S35 sensor.

      I shoot and record youth soccer. The DoF "cheat" I get thanks to MFT allows more players to be in focus ... meaning if the AF picks up on the wrong player, then at least the ball carrier is still reasonably sharp. Given the speed of the game, I don't really have the luxury of trying to peck at the right player on-screen.
      I will be picking up a GH7 very soon for the new season.

      @user-tj8ox8iy8m a patent covers a specific idea/design/technology. The existence of a patent does not indicate the existence of a finished market-ready product that uses that patent. There are plenty of patents applied for and granted that never make it to market in a product, or that do but it takes many years or even decades. For instance Panasonic has been developing their organic sensor, which has ND-like capabilities, for probably a decade now. If it was close to ready for market they wouldn't even need this patent for a separate filter mechanism.

    I know I'm late here but always feel the need to clear this up, speedboosters do not give you shallower DOF because the aperture increases in concert with the widened FOV. So yes you get more light but the lens is effectively wider so the DOF gain is negated.

    The ONLY reason I won't reinvest back into the system is because of the lack of compatibility of L mount to MFT. Seems like a huge oversight to me as a company to choose a mount that won't promote using both systems. Those f1.7 mft zooms are far too expensive to invest in a new body and set of lenses. I'd love to pick up a gh6 / gh7 specifically for the 120fps for the few times I need it, but I just can't after upgrading from the gh5 to the s1 and s5iix. Still absolutely love Lumix and the L mount but I'll stick to the S5iix and BMCC6k.

Never used a windowed sensor so it tripped me out when I shot 4k (to get 60fps) and it cropped in on the sensor. But I realized quickly what was going on and just use it creatively now.
      Still learning the quirks and figuring out which ISO's noise pattern I like for texture but so far, absolutely in love. I find my sigma 24-70 is sweet to focus with, but all of the Lumix f1.8 primes are really unreliable with the focus by wire mechanism. Really hoping they add a Linear mode and customization for anamorphic desqueeze. So far it seems they only allow 1 desqueeze per aspect ratio to land at 2.39:1 (I believe that's the landing aspect ratio)
      For both shoots I used mainly the BMCC6k and the S5iix for the more "run and gun"/ night shots since the low light is better on the lumix. Not many people like having a lens in their face 24/7 unless.... she shoots as well, perhaps all the b-roll of you filming? 22:57-23:09 is a pretty intermediate to advanced camera move. Enjoyed your POV from a film maker's perspective. I shoot FF Canon (mostly stills) and I went to a GH6 due to small size, weight and video centric features, frame rates and codecs; but long for a shallow DOF of FF. You are wrong about prores raw with DaVinci...you can transcode it to CDNG which is true raw without loss and even compressed.
    I am doing it with my proresraw footages from GH5s and S5 org.
    Assimilate or Rawconvertor are the 2 programs which relatively of your CPU GPU are fast.
    And liked I said in previous videos comments prores raw CDNG footages from GH5s or S5 is better vs BRAW imho...slightly

    What is with the shallow DoF craziness? I doubt professionals shoot most of the time 1.4-1.7 (full frame) - I know I don't. There is probably one thing you cannot fix and ruins your footage: missed focus.
    There is time and place for ultra shallow DoF, but it's rare. I think most videographers/filmmakers usually shoot between f2.8 and f5.6
    You can get the same DoF with f1.4 and similar with f1.7 lenses on MFT. As a bonus you get f2 light for example but with f4 DoF, so more likely your video will be in focus. And if I need ultra shallow DoF, I can use 50-65-100mm on MFT with f1.7-1.8-2.8 put my subject far away from the background and I'll have creamy background.
    I'll switch from FF (Sony A7III) to MFT (GH7), but based on everything I saw so far, I highly doubt I'll miss FF

    I'm not sure I've ever really been convinced by the low light "issues" on M43 cameras. I think it's a skill issue more than a camera issue if I'm being honest. I didn't really notice it even on my trusty GH4, but then again I did use a 0.95 lens most of the time.
    People who are really fixated on the low light "issue" are probably the same people who just put the ISO up really high without failing to light and still wonder why the image looks bad.
    The way I have always seen it, if Fincher and Mann were able to get by with the old Thomson Viper with the 1" sensor on Collateral, Zodiac et al, then really sensor size means very little.

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  3 месяца назад

      Totally agree, I think it's more due to expectations and what the FF equivalents can do. Since the A7s mark 1, we've been spoilt with high ISO low light performance. Most people using these cams won't have crew or lighting budgets so the ability to capture in challenging low light situations is attractive to a lot of people. Of course once you're able to manage and master lighting / exposure you can pretty much handle any camera.
      Re: feature films using older cams - that is definitely the proof that sensor size doesn't matter, although I'd add most of those higher spec productions will have had the benefit of time, crew and a lighting budget.

      For me the image fell apart, compression artefacts, noise, loss of detail and sharpness. On its own it might be acceptable, but next to footage shot up to 120 it doesn't sit well. You should not be in VFR mode. In the same place you set your codec and resolution, that's where you select it. Above 60fps you lose AF tracking which is what you might be refering to, but you still get the general PDAF

    Is there a difference between the 2 sensors GH6 GH7 - Pany always argued that dual pixel would impact the image quality hence that’s why they stuck with DTD AF
    I picked up a new GH6 last year heavily discounted from $3.8k down to I think it was around $2.7k AUD Australia 🇦🇺 so upgrading is not an option just for an improved AF when the GH6 is still ok

Does not take time, just a few minutes to convert hours of footage. Worth the process since the amount of data in the image allows better manipulation of it. But yes, you are right too in saying prores raw is a stupid choice be it by lumix or atomos or Sony, others formats of raw, from open source cDNG to some proprietary would be more universal! @@EdProsser True but Ive been shooting professionally for 20 years now and there are going to be times where the lighting, or lack thereof, is beyond your control. Concerts, nightclubs, indoor sporting events and other dimly lit conditions where you are not allowed to bring any type of lighting, a M43 sensor is going to struggle badly. Even some weddings and/or receptions are low light and they may not want you bringing lighting in, again that little sensor is going to struggle. I actually just shot an event in a casino a few nights ago with my G95 and 25 f/1.7 and the video was just not good at all. The video from my iPhone 15 Pro Max looked better to be honest.
      I like Panasonic and have owned dozens of their cameras. Everything from little LX series point and shoots and FZ bridge cameras (still have an FZ50) to M43 and the S5 Mark II. I wouldn't trust any f their M43 cameras for anything professional unless it was in optimal lighting. The GH7 is also considerably overpriced for a M43 camera and Panasonic badly needs a quality M43 with PDAF in the $1,500 price range. The competition have them.
