CHAINSAW NOT CUTTING STRAIGHT? HERE'S THE SOLUTION

  • Is your chainsaw not cutting straight or cutting on an angle when you're cutting firewood? Here's a how-to tip to get your chainsaw cutting straight again. When sharpening a chainsaw, If the teeth on one side of the bar are filed down to a shorter length than those on the other side, that will make the chainsaw cut on an angle. The longer teeth will have to be filed down to match the length of all teeth on the chain.
    If this tip doesn't work, then you may have filed the teeth at the wrong angle, or, the guide bar is worn and needs to be replaced.
    Update: the above is true, but what is the root of the problem here is that one of the files in the 2-in-1 sharpener was worn so it was causing one side of the chain's teeth to file away more than the other side.
    I used the Stihl 2-in-1 sharpener to sharpen the chain. This tool does an all-round job as it files the teeth and the rakers at the same time.
    Chainsaw used is Stihl MS261C.

    Hello from Piqua Ohio. I have that same sharpener that you have. I have 20-in, 24-in, 28-in, and 32-in bars. It's always great to learn new techniques! You never too old to learn. Keep up the great videos!

      I dont mind using this too because it's manual and it does the rakers. I used to use Oregon's electric dremel-style tool, which just fell apart in short time. It was quick on the teeth and I'd do the rakers with it ever third sharpening and would take off a nice bit and it would really dig in, which some people say is dangerous, but outside of fteak accidents, I feel secure holding MS261C in place, even the odd time that it jerks back. I never liked the idea of single filing and I liked that the electric tool got me back cutting quickly when the adrenalin is going

    Great demo Anthony! I have found it is not as much the size of the teeth, but more the sharpness of the teeth, if you have 2-3 dull or chipped teeth on one side of the chain, then the cut becomes uneven and the saw will struggle on some species of wood.
    Keep up the hood work!

      Hey thanks a lot man, yes I've noticed that a few dull teeth can make a difference. I shouldve had that point in the video too. Cheers

    That worked well.. yeah most people like me will sharpen one side perfect and the other a mess ... couldn't find the 7/32 combo file here so I switched to the dremel tool..

    • @OntarioFirewoodResource
      @OntarioFirewoodResource  2 года назад

      Ya the Dremel tool gets you back to cutting real quick. I would do the rakers every third sharpening. I used to maintain the shape of the rakers but then ibjust started doing them flat, which isbwhat the Stihl 2-in-1 does anyway

    Hate it when that happens, more noticeable on larger diameter rounds. Buckin Billy Ray did a video on this a couple years ago. He took a brand new chain and filed one side down to almost nothing and left the other to full length and it cut straight. I think the bar or rakers has something to do with it?

    • @OntarioFirewoodResource
      @OntarioFirewoodResource  2 года назад

      I love Billy Ray, he's like a kid in the candy store and he's a badass on the drums. I did a little research on what causes angled cuts (and made sure I mentioned all factors in the video) and I saw that the left teeth need to be filed for a right- angle cut, but i found the opposite to be true in my case because my right side teeth were longer while it cut to the right and I had to edit my video to make it seem like i was saying right side = right angle cut. Although my results are conflicting with raker/ bar issues, I'll still inspect the bar and rakers for perspective

      Thank you, I've heard that the bar and rakers cam cause that issue and thata brand new chain filed on one side will still make straight cuts, but as you can see what I did solved the problem, but I'll still inspect my rakers and bar to get some perspective

      @OntarioFirewoodResource  9 месяцев назад +1

      Hey, no problem.
      Your issue is hard to figure out considering that you have a new bar and chain. The only thing that I can think is that you are pushing in the saw when it's cutting and the weight that you are putting on the saw is unevenly distributed, causing the saw to cut on am angle. The saw should cut through the wood effortlessly when sharp without pushing on the saw.

    Doesn't solve my problem. My new bar and new chain, sold to me by a certified stihl repairman, made 9 cuts into 12" diameter elm wood. Then on the 10th cut it started cutting on an angle and bogged down at only 3" deep. Dull blade now right! Dull after only 9 cuts? I question the quality of the stihl chain. To continue, I then sharpened the chain. I am not a novice at this. I am 72 and have been working a chainsaw since 14. It now only made 4 cuts into the elm trunk before cutting on angle and of course bogged down. I am convinced that the stihl chain is crap. We are talking almost new 20" stihl chainsaw. Going back to ECHO.

      Hmmm...different experience with me, anytime I have an issue cutting straight, the answers are: normal wear and tear
      Bad file
      One side of teeth lower than the other
      Uneven filing.
      I approve of their bars, I'm in the scrap business so I do know metal and they're made of very hard steel. I used to painstakingly drill through those bars to attach my bucking measuring stick on them and it was almost impossible and only a overtightened chain will cause bar wear in the guides prematurely.
      I'm not a sharpening enthusiast, I've only used to 2 in 1 or a dremel style sharpener and I van ger a pretty sharp chain and getting wedged into the wood while cutting is not a big issue overall for me. Considering your symptoms, I can't speculate as to why you have your issues
