It always sucks when watching a reaction video and the people are not reacting to what is happening but trying so hard to make comments about how they don't react to things about the movie - for example - when Samara comes out of the TV and the fat dude comments "i've seen that effect before..." - uhh yeah - you really sold the reaction buddy...
Im pretty sure they did explain what happened from news reports to news clippings etc. But honestly the horror monster is more terrifying when they dont explain as much of their backstory. The unknown is more scarier.
The character of Samara (Sadako in the original Japanese film) is based on the mythological onryo (怨霊), or vengeful spirit. Key aspects of their design include long, black, unkempt hair, tattered white funerial garb, and pale skin with black or dark blue eye makeup (borrowed from Kabuki theater). Onryo-inspired characters can also be found in numerous other J-horror films, such as Ju-On: The Grudge, or in video games, such as Fatal Frame, Killer Instinct (2013) and Guilty Gear.
@@The_Devil_Breaker_ Agreed! The composer, Mick Gordon, creates fantastic and thematically relevant game music. Fun Fact, the instrument that is heard in Spinal's theme is called a Kanling, a Tibetan flute made from a human leg bone.
I always find it funny how this movie is an adaptation of an adaptation of an adaptation of an adaptation, The Ring is an adaptation of Ringu which is an adaptation of Ring (Novel) which is an adaptation of Okiku's Ghost (A real Japanese Urban Legend).

This is the last movie that gave me genuine fright. I will never forget this theater experience. I was in 7th grade, and the image of that girl’s face when the quick cut of them opening the closet door will always stick with me 😵😱
my siblings made me watch this movie when I was really young. It traumatized me so much that every time I had to walk home alone, I ran past the three wells that were on the way.
Totally valid! I was 23 when I saw this movie on HBO in January 2004. This movie freaked me out for years. For example, whenever I'd start a movie on VHS, I'd put the tape in and press play first BEFORE turning the television on to avoid the TV snow. There's a well at the back of my grandmother's house. All my visits were planned around daylight because leaving her house at night with the well in sight freaked me out. In 2007, I rented this movie, thinking I'd outgrown my fear. When my roommate and I returned to our apartment, I left the DVD in the freaking trunk and returned it the next day. A year later, I thought, "okay, you're 28 and "mature" now; you can do this. I bought this movie from Blockbuster. Got home, left it in the trunk, and got a refund the next day. I really enjoy this movie, and it's frustrating that it still creeps me out.
I watched this movie alone and found Samara absolutely terrifying. What helped me was researching the girl who played her. She was too young to see the movie and when she finally got to see herself it scared HER! 😅
I found the original Japanese Ringu to be better. I suppose it must be good if the US would do a remake. I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it. A true masterpiece
@@reclusivewidow9933 Eh I wouldn't say its any better, its filmed worst, the special effects are worse. The acting is worst because it is filmed in a cornier way to western audiences, the only thing it really has going for it over the Ring is that its the original. Now if we were talking about Ju-on/Grudge I would agree with you
If someone else has already said this, apologies for repeating but… something I love about eastern horror vs western horror is that, in many ways, western horror monsters have rules. Silver kills werewolves, you have to invite a vampire in, kill a zombie by destroying the brain (usually). However, eastern monsters and dangerous spirits don’t have as many, if any rules. They can show up whenever, and wherever and their genuine nature/powers/origin, etc. aren’t known. There are also a lot more entities where encountering them is guaranteed death, which is the same feeling that the video in this movie gives. Anyway, loving the channel!
I agree with you on the tone Verbinski set; he definitely wasn’t going for lazy jump scares, one feels filled with a sense of dread more than anything.
This movie started the wonderful pairing of director Gore Verbinski and composer Hans Zimmer. They went on to do the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Rango and The Lone Ranger after this. The Ring is one of Zimmer’s only horror films and, also, one of his best film scores.
Yeah, the creepy child actor is great. She was excellent in another movie that came out the same year that I highly recommend - Lilo and Stitch. She played Lilo. Two iconic performances in complete opposite tone, in the same year.
I saw the original Japanese version first on a bootleg VHS haha But I will say that despite loving this film very much after seeing it in the theaters, the girl in the original is much much creepier coming out of the well. She slithers towards the tv while the American version has her just walk. Far creepier. I don't scare easy but this was close for me. Keep up the Halloween theme. Both Dawn of the Dead version are great watches. Train to Busan as well. World War Z, 30 Days of Night. I'd like to know if you've seen theses amazing films.
Fun fact, in the American version they had Samara's actress walk backwards to the well and then reversed the scene, making her movements look unnatural and uncanny, a cool little attention to detail that horror movies don't really go out of their way to do anymore.
This movie DESTROYED me when I first watched it. I was not prepared at all. I hadn’t seen one trailer, nothing. My friend is like hey wanna see this movie about a vhs tape or something? I was like sure why not. We didn’t talk at all on the way home from the theatre. That video samara made messed me up for months. Mental stuff scares me way worse than jump scares. This is def the scariest movie I’ve ever seen just out of context of my specific situation watching it with no knowledge in an empty theater with just my friend
21:50 Holden: She just wanted to be found? That it? Me: Do it Jen! Do it! Say the thing! 22:01 Jen: Whos to say... Me: WOOOOO she did it! she said the thing he says! :D
+Holdan Hardman I don’t know if they hold up today as adults but Scary Movie 2 is the funniest of all the Scariest Movie franchise. 3 is when things slowly started dwindling in quality because they were just pumping them out every year or other year and weren’t really involving any plot or real well thought out gags. Though the part when Brenda beats the crap out of Samara from The Ring in the living room was pretty good.
I remember watching this as a kid probably more to the side of a young teen and not being able to go in to the basement of my dads house at night and if I did I remember me racing back up the stairs back up to the light lol because I was like so terrified of the ring girl popping out from the dark lol to this day 28 years old I still get that feeling and catch myself still racing up the steps from time to time

Most of the time in cases of remakes of Asian horror movies, you can safely assume the original is scarier. But sometimes it may be less accessible for western audiences due to cultural context missing.
Absolutely terrifying. Girl killers in general are way more scary. Samara, the exorcist, the girl from the grudge. Just that white gown with long hair or scratched up face is scary. Makes Jason and Freddy look like teddy bears. But I always wondered what would happen if Michael meets Samara lol.
Bruh this video is scary😂 i was around the 2:00 mark and the clip from scary movie 3 absolutely scared me. Like I’m scared to watch scary movie 3 just cuz of the ring reference.
1:47 That's what I found genius about the movie Birdbox with Sandra Bullock, because the movie proved that even seeing the beings through the screen doesn't protect you, it was more immersive than my pet peeve of "keeping-it-up-in-the-air/up-to-the-viewer's-imagination" (No, finish your damn movie!).
The first time I ever watched this movie, I was home alone. As soon as the credits started, my phone rang. It showed unknown number on the caller ID, and when I answered no one was there. It freaked me out, but it's been like 20 years so I guess I'm okay
1:51 Funny you say that because the book in which this and the Japanese movie were based on (yes it was a trilogy actually, by Koji Suzuki), *that's the very concept of the book*. SOME SPOILERS It's strongly implied that the book we're reading was the book that the main character wrote about his investigation about the tape, and that Sadako got what she wanted; she wants to spread like a virus as a meme. Thus the reader is also getting "infected" by reading the novel "The Ring". It's a great trilogy and highly recommend it, but it's quite different from the movies, specially the last one "Loop" which is actually sci-fi and reframes the series entirely. Edit: Also the reason about Samara/Sadako's curse "life cycle", is because in the book, Sadako was infected by smallpox, so the "curse" was an alliance by the virus and the will of Sadako, but there's no ghosts; the people infected just die of an unknown disease. And then it gets way more complicated afterwards. For example: what happens when a woman watches the tape *exactly the time while she's ovulating*?
I went and saw this with my sister in theaters when I was about 12 and we got home late at night, and while we were gone for the day our cable was disconnected so when I sat down in the living room alone and in the dark I turned the TV on to just static and it freaked me out. One of the only times a movie ever *really* got to me after the fact, my sister thought it was hilarious at the time 😐
A friend of mine was watching the movie late at night by himself one night. And when he got to the part you watch the tape for the first time, I called him. His phone rang at the same time as in the movie and it scared the crap out of him. So I inadvertently enhanced his viewing experience.
Lookit Jen go!! Nice to see 1 half of the show being so interactive.. Not that looking at holden is that hard, man. But Jen's a metal head and so am I! Let's go!
by the time of the events in this film the tape was already being spread and multiple people were watching at once so the curse couldn’t be contained. it wouldn’t matter if the person rachel showed it to died.
Would love to hear the construction guys talking about that one: “We’re gonna leave it here fully formed?!?” “It’s a HAUNTED WELL JEREMY!!! Unless you’re gonna fish that ghost girl outta there we’re just gonna board the thing up and call it good!”
I think this was a lot scarier when it came out because of the special effects and the fact that horror movies were just kind of the same old not scary thing minus a few exceptions. And when it comes to PG-13 horrors this was one of the first modern PG-13 horror movies to actually be pretty scary because it was also psychological.
I don't know about other Asian cultures, but I heard (possibly in The Making of The Grudge?) that the Japanese believe that spirits/ghosts cannot be defeated which why you get the ending like this one and The Grudge. In 2016 they made a Sadako vs. Kayako (The Ring vs The Grudge). I have yet to see it myself.
"The Ring" had just the right amount of mythology. Very unnerving. If y'all are looking for other good horror movies, I recommend "The Descent." Underrated classic that leverages claustrophobia very effectively.
This film was based on the original Japanese film Ringu, and it is a pretty faithful remake. There are actually many scenes that are improved over Ringu, like the opening sewuence where Katie dies. The Ring is arguably better than Ringu, which is not typical of US remakes.
Technically this video isn't dangerous at all, as you could just keep showing new people the video, then telling them to do the same. So long as people keep it up, no one will ever die.
if you're gonna watch The Ring 2, watch the short film set between the first two films (also called Rings confusingly), it adds some extra background to the spreading of the curse in the sequel! Great video!
This and scary movie 3 solidified my fear of the ring girl. And for static tvs. My mom would leave a tv on static and come in with wet hair in a white tee and it was the scariest thing ever.
There are obviously arguments to be made about this era of western directors remaking japanese horror films, and which is better. I'm not going to get into THAT particular can of worms, but when you compare the films you get an interesting insight into the horror mentalities of two different cultures, which I find fascinating.
I have seen all 3 of the ring movies and I really liked it. Love your videos and channel. You and Jen are awesome and amazing. 2 of my friends got me into the ring movies.
I watched this the first time on dvd and I believe the ending they just show you tape and when the movie ended the DVD player automatically opened the dvd tray and then our house phone rang right on queue. We let it go to voicemail.
THE RING is 9/10. THE RING TWO is worth watching. There is a third film, called RINGS. BUT there's a 15 minute short film called RINGS which was made to connect and promote the 2nd film. I would react to that short film with RING TWO. I found it on RUclips called RINGS 2005. Chronologically the 2005 short is next.
Its very ironic that Holden said this movie was original when it actually like most other hollywood movies is just a remake of a foreign movie noone ever saw xDD
missed opportunity for prank-calling Holden after the tape was finished at 9:26 .. that would be golden content xD -- I actually did it to my niece so yep, I am mildly psychopathic!
I'm sure this happened a lot when the movie came out but of course my house phone rang after they showed the tape lol. My cousin and I were watching it and we both screamed. My mom was so confused. 😂 I liked that the DVD had a hidden feature on the menu that played the tape.
It has to be so satisfying for her to get to say “Whose to say.”

And when it comes to PG-13 horrors this was one of the first modern PG-13 horror movies to actually be pretty scary because it was also psychological.
Agreed! It was a big deal back then and one of the few horror movies that genuinely creeped me out back then.
That scene with the horse falling off the boat is one of the funniest things I've ever seen when I first watched this movie.🤣
I always looked away after the first time because it made me so sad lol
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that was hilarious.
"....and it gets funnier everytime i see it!"
- Beetlejuice.
@@T0asTy1y’all weird. It’s a violent scene and animal abuse lol
The Ring is a modern horror classic, it's not quite as good as it could be, but the highs it has are really high highs!
1:46 "... ,the thing that makes the ring girl come."
Holden Thomas Hardman!
I LOVE the framed pictures behind you when you're talking about the movie at the end. Very pretty!!
Loved the Japanese versions of The Ring and The Grudge!
*edit* Holden is the literal King of Dad Jokes!
This film was based on the original Japanese film Ringu, and it is a pretty faithful remake. There are actually many scenes that are improved over Ringu, like the opening sewuence where Katie dies. The Ring is arguably better than Ringu, which is not typical of US remakes.
I was impressed Jen knew the director also did Pirates!
Y’all should watch the original to compare. Personally I think both are great
19:59 I always love these little edits
Does anyone else still look away when the tape plays, just incase? Or is that just weird lil me? 😂
I’m 50 years old and this movie (and The Grudge) still freak me the hell out!
This is the only horror movie that scarred me for life. And it's my favourite horror movie
Technically this video isn't dangerous at all, as you could just keep showing new people the video, then telling them to do the same. So long as people keep it up, no one will ever die.
This is one of those horror stories with a good deeper lore to it (mainly when you look at sequels and the original films/book/manga).
if you're gonna watch The Ring 2, watch the short film set between the first two films (also called Rings confusingly), it adds some extra background to the spreading of the curse in the sequel!
Jen: "The Ring.... one of the most interesting horror movies to come out .. RECENTLY"
That movie came out 20 years ago 😂
I had the DVD for this and a hidden extra was the entire "tape" footage.
I have seen all 3 of the ring movies and I really liked it. Love your videos and channel. You and Jen are awesome and amazing. 2 of my friends got me into the ring movies.
HAha we love when we finally get the husband to watch something for the first time! HAha.
I liked the reveal of “the ring” - aka the light through the cover from the top of the well!
Yes! I love the original Japanese movie but not even Ringu had that Ring light scene
I watched this the first time on dvd and I believe the ending they just show you tape and when the movie ended the DVD player automatically opened the dvd tray and then our house phone rang right on queue. We let it go to voicemail.
Holden dropping the scary movie references has me dead 😂
At 7:15 I think that sound effect was used in the original 1998 Japanese film or some other effect that sounded similar!
17:19 me whenever I watch a movie and someone does something stupid.
Holden: “don’t google that”
Me proceeding to google it….
Me: “oh dear…”
Makes me wonder if there were any cameras on that boat because its obvious to us she was messin' with the horse before it went nutts, LOL
A few fake American accents in this film: Naomi Watts (English), Brian Cox (Scottish) and Martin Henderson (New Zealander).
Its very ironic that Holden said this movie was original when it actually like most other hollywood movies is just a remake of a foreign movie noone ever saw xDD
Saw this in the theatre...freaked Everybody out, good times!
Gore Verbinski master of scenery. I only know him from PotC, but not surprised he directed this eerie compelling movie.
missed opportunity for prank-calling Holden after the tape was finished at 9:26 .. that would be golden content xD -- I actually did it to my niece so yep, I am mildly psychopathic!
I'm sure this happened a lot when the movie came out but of course my house phone rang after they showed the tape lol. My cousin and I were watching it and we both screamed. My mom was so confused. 😂 I liked that the DVD had a hidden feature on the menu that played the tape.
