So, to Jen's comment that she wishes we saw more instances of this happening. It's supposed to imply that every horror movie, this is what's behind it. It even references there being an incident in 1998 where none of the sacrifices died due to an issue in the chem dept. Which is a direct reference to The Faculty, where none of the teens died because of a drug that one of the main characters created. Also, to clarify. We, the audience, are the evil gods that need to be entertained by these sacrifices every year.

This is one of those movies that gets better/more impressive with more viewings. You really see all the small foreshadowing situations that make certain things make even more sense.
Awesome Fact: Anna Hutchison who portrayed Jules in this movie also played the Yellow Jungle Fury Ranger Lily in Power Rangers Jungle Fury many years back😄
Every monster in the climax is a reference to a monster from a horror movie. Chainsaw head is a reference to Pinhead from Hellraiser. The giant Cobra is a reference to Anaconda. The masked people is a reference to The Strangers. Merman is a reference to Black Lagoon creature. The clown is a reference to Pennywise.
The meta commentary is that the Ancient Gods represent us, the audience, who expect the horror tropes in our movies to play out a certain way and the 'world will end' (or the movie franchise will get no more sequels) if they disappoint us. It's so funny, and its impressive how close they got to the big horror movie monsters without breaching copyright. The merman always splits my sides when it shows up, and dude is right how many horror movies have you seen with a merman in it?.
Easily one of my favorite horror movies because imo it changes the outlook of every horror movie ever made. Makes you think they are these "cliches" on purpose for them to feed these "gods" I really loved it.
This movie released in an era of horror that I don't think we'll ever see again. This is right around the time zombies were absolutely massive, TWD was on it's 2nd season and going super strong, other shows like american horror story were starting out, and sequels to all of our favorite horror franchises were churning out regular content every year. That era kind of set our expectations for what a movie about a cabin in the woods would be. In fact, there was another movie called Cabin Fever that came out about 10 years before this one and many thought it was a remake / update to that movie, hence why the ending of this film is such a controversy.
The ancient ones are a metaphor or representation of us (the viewers), when horror movies don't go the traditional route or have the necessary trademarks of horror, more often than not, we wouldn't be satisfied.
Great reaction. I smirked literal a second before Holden started smirking right before the Chris-meets-wall incident. Yeah, this film really kinda explained like all past horror movies, not only from America but even horror genres from other cultures like Japanese horror. The "100% success rate" bit is hilarious given how good Japanese horror cinema is regarded to be.
Hot Take: The Gods shouldn't have destroyed the Earth at the end because the Fool ended up dying. Sigourney Weaver was the Fool for underestimating Marty
Saw head man is a reference to Pinhead from the Hellraiser franchise. He's part of an otherworldly race called the Cenobites, that treat pain and pleasure as the same thing, and exist to give both at a level beyond human understanding.
So the reason why the Ancient Ones were angry and shaking the facility when the team signalled that the Fool had died (when Marty was taken the first time), is because they had assigned each of the group their roles instead of actually doing their research and seeing who was who. Marty was actually the Virgin, and like they said, the Virgin doesn't have to die so long as they die last. The rumble was a warning to them which they ignored. Curt wasn't the Jock, he was the Fool, Jules is the Scholar as she is a nursing student, Holden is a quiet football star so he's the Jock, and Dana is the Whore because she had an affair with her professor. The Foundation fucked the whole thing up by assigning them roles rather than seeing which one was actually which :P It's definitely also got overtones similar to the SCP Foundation, which if you have not checked that out, you should. The Foundation secures and contains anomalous objects, beings, and events to protect the general public, which is similar to all the monsters being held in the cubes and being used to avert an XK-class End of the World scenario :P
I believe there's a fan theory about the "gods" that will destroy the world. The theory is that "gods" is synonymous with the fans of these horror movie tropes and if the deaths didnt happen in order or how we, the fans know the general outcome, then we will riot and destroy everything in protest. I had to watch this movie a second time to truly appreciate the Meta-ness of it all. Great film.
The movie is a metaphor: the "Old Gods" are us, the viewing audience. The people making the scenes are the people behind the camera, creating these films. All of the tropes are things we want/expect in a horror movie, for better and for worse.
I love this movie so much. My single and ONLY big gripe with it would be that showing the force field in the beginning is a letdown for when Curt tries to jump across the gap. I know that their intent is to clue in the audience that the main group isn't just being watched, but also the entire TRIP is set up, I just think it could've been done with cameras built into the rocks or something. If we didn't know that the force field was there, Curt's death would've been way more shocking, hopeless, and 10x more hilarious!
One of my favorite movies! Love it so much! And no matter what, I always hold out hope they make it through the tunnel every time. (Also, not directed by Joss Whedon.) Also Also, all those other scenarios for the failed attempts at what happened in past ventures are... every horror movie ever made. This movie is saying all horror movies happen because of this explanation. It's just that this group found the secret. That's what makes the movie so strong. It's a sequel to an entire genre.

27:13 On Jen wishing they showed more of the previous sacrifices - I think the concept is that every other horror movie you have seen... is that. So they don't need a screen for all the successful attempts before, you've already seen them in your own time.
One of my favorite guilty pleasure films ngl, jusy so much fun and so many easter eggs. The ending is divisive, but it was set up early. "Society needs to crumble, we're just too chickenshit to let it"
fun fact: during filming Marty was actually in such good shape they had to put him in oversized clothes for the stoner part to be a bit more beliable. (would never be me lol)
One of my favourite movies of all-time. I avoided it for years because of the generic title 'til I noticed that Joss Whedon was behind it. Was immediately blown away by its unexpected genius and original concept. Great reaction to a great movie. 👍🤘❤
Fun fact: the dude who plays Marty the stoner guy was RIPPED, much more than Chris Hemsworth at the time... Which is why he always wears baggy clothes. And the actor who plays Holden's namesake, later would play one of the lead roles on Detroit: Beyond Human, one of the coolest narrative games in the last five years. Edit: Another fun fact, this movie had a tie-in with Left 4 Dead, which had the facilities in the end as a level. At the same time, in the "money shot" where we see every monster in those shifting containers, supposedly there's a Bloater from the same game (I've never found it though).
In terms of actual horror, it's maybe 6/10. In terms of comedy, it's maybe, 7/10. In terms of creativity and timing and accessibility and sheer fun, it's 8/10. It's just a great movie that most people can enjoy for what it is. Having a vast repertoire of horror movies under your belt certainly helps you appreciate the subtle and not-so-subtle nods to the movies that inspired it, but it also stands on its own well enough. Fran Kranz was brilliant and subtle, as he is in everything he's done, and seeing Sigourney Weaver make an appearance is never a disappointment (although, having grown up watching the "Alien" movies, I recognized her voice before I saw her face).
Cabin in the woods is like the template to my favorite kinds of horror movies. A perfect mix of comedy and gore. You should watch The Thing or Trick or Treat for Halloween!
It’s funny you mention Chris Hemsworth doing an American accent because the woman playing his girlfriend, Anna Hutchison, is a New Zealander also doing an American accent.
This movie was originally supposed to tie in with Valve’s ‘Left 4 Dead’ game. There was even supposed to be a DLC in-game with the Cabin map (and I might be forgetting other details). I forget what caused the deal to fall-through, but you can still see a few “Special Infected” from the game, in the shot with all the monsters in their respective boxes, you can see; A Boomer A Tank and a Witch
As a bit of a horror movie buff I really appreciate a lot they did with the story, the meta narrative and the delightful references to horror movie history.
Can't wait for the next comment of the day where is just "Josh Whedon didn't direct this, it was Drew Goddard" and then Holden hopefully just dead pans into the camera and says "whoops" and moves on with the video.
There’s a theory out there that says “The Faculty” is the one time that they failed with chemistry department being the issue. May Jen can watch it and pretend since she wanted to see other “scenarios”.
I love the meta-ness of this movie in the sense that we the audience are the Old Gods hence why the ground rumbled when Marty "dies" considering he's both written and played to be the "fan-favorite" -- his death would tilt the audience (see: Jess) and in-verse his death is false which would (lore wise) anger the gods that seek sacrifice. It's a witty little movie all things considered.
Just a slight correction, for accuracy's sake.... this wasn't directed by Joss, although he did write and produce it, so much of the creative input comes from him. Actual directorial duties fell to Drew Goddard, who was also involved in the Buffyverse, which is probably why it feels like it could also have been directed by Joss.
It is interesting to me that I think the "Old Gods" are actually supposed to be us. The actual audience. We pay to watch them die and if they don't we become angry. Just a theory I heard about it when I first saw it.
Very Lovecraftian-esque. Many of the cosmic horrors required sacrifices in their stories. The reason all of them failed was that the elder gods wanted it to fail to come forth. It true shows that no matter how much you try to control the situation things go awry. Fun movie.
Yeah Jen, we all root for Marty. Everyone was upset when we thought he got killed so early on. And I don't mean that "everyone" as in generally speaking... I mean, EVERYONE. I'd imagine support for his character as being people's favorite character in the movie has got to be unanimous.
I was lucky and saw a screening of this movie and have Fran Kranz’ autograph on a poster. It’s crazy because it apparently took years before they could distribute it.
Chris Hemsworth made this movie and the Red Dawn remake in 2009 before filming Thor. They were both shelved because MGM had financial troubles. After Thor was a hit, both movies got sold to new studios to be released because "Oh man this Chris Hemsworth guy is good!"
This is directed by Drew Goddard not Joss Whedon. Drew and Josh wrote the script together though. Drew was a writer and director from Buffy and Angel. His episodes where some of the best in both series. Super dark with amazing character development. Very complicated and unique. He also wrote for Alias on some of the best episodes.
nice little touch for you guys, this was Chris Hemworths first movie, but due to delays and what not, this didnt get released till after Thor had released, and the movie happened to do much better because Chris was in this
Drew Goddard is a close collaborator of Joss Whedon and he worked on both Buffy and Angel (and even the comic book continuations) so it can easily understood how one could mistake this for a Whedon picture. He did executive produce and co-write it tho.
Such a great film. Probably the best "parody" film I guess you could call it. Hope Jen loves it! Jen, btw, think that guy with the saw blades in his head who was holding the ball was supposed to be like Pinhead from the Hellraiser series of movies? That's what I've always got from him On a side note, Holden about to get demonetized for showing his feet too often on camera ;)
The instances where it happened to other people are other horror movies. And, the old ones that the movie is attempting to please are us, the audience.
I love this movie! Love that you guys are watching! Have y’all seen the original ‘Child’s Play’ yet? Would love to see a reaction to that and at least the two sequels. Here’s hoping!! 🫰
One of the most creative horror movies to come out in a very long time. The fact that this excuses all the terrible decisions of every crap horror movie victim is great and pokes fun at the genre. I really wish they would do prequels and a sequel to this movie.
Never realized until now, since saw _Cabin in the Woods_ so long ago, but I recognize Holden (the movie character, not our host) from _Detroit: Become Human_ Sure enough; Jesse Williams is the voice, and clearly the model, for Markus.

Edit: Another fun fact, this movie had a tie-in with Left 4 Dead, which had the facilities in the end as a level. At the same time, in the "money shot" where we see every monster in those shifting containers, supposedly there's a Bloater from the same game (I've never found it though).
I agree ! I’m playing that on my gaming channel as we speak ! Loving it so far !
He wasn't more ripped than Chris Hemsworth, but he was too ripped to be the "stoner" guy.
Jen’s laugh is so infectious! ❤
Man, Jen's T-shirt game is high tier. Every week with a absolute banger. Holden's shirts are pretty good too. (don't cry)
That "husband's bulge" misdirect was fantastic 🤣
It’s funny you mention Chris Hemsworth doing an American accent because the woman playing his girlfriend, Anna Hutchison, is a New Zealander also doing an American accent.
This movie was originally supposed to tie in with Valve’s ‘Left 4 Dead’ game. There was even supposed to be a DLC in-game with the Cabin map (and I might be forgetting other details).
I forget what caused the deal to fall-through, but you can still see a few “Special Infected” from the game, in the shot with all the monsters in their respective boxes, you can see;
A Boomer
A Tank
and a Witch
As a bit of a horror movie buff I really appreciate a lot they did with the story, the meta narrative and the delightful references to horror movie history.
Can't wait for the next comment of the day where is just "Josh Whedon didn't direct this, it was Drew Goddard" and then Holden hopefully just dead pans into the camera and says "whoops" and moves on with the video.
There’s a theory out there that says “The Faculty” is the one time that they failed with chemistry department being the issue. May Jen can watch it and pretend since she wanted to see other “scenarios”.
This is one of the most unique horror movies ever made.
The subscribe button over the naughty bits killed me
Just a slight correction, for accuracy's sake.... this wasn't directed by Joss, although he did write and produce it, so much of the creative input comes from him. Actual directorial duties fell to Drew Goddard, who was also involved in the Buffyverse, which is probably why it feels like it could also have been directed by Joss.
HOLDENS BEARD HAS GAINED MORE POWER. Seriously bro looks good like it’s at lumberjack tier
A movie where a Power Ranger almost gets down with Thor? I love this one, honestly.
Fun movie.

“Foreshadowing”
Yeah Jen, we all root for Marty. Everyone was upset when we thought he got killed so early on. And I don't mean that "everyone" as in generally speaking... I mean, EVERYONE. I'd imagine support for his character as being people's favorite character in the movie has got to be unanimous.
3:06 Jen's head turn is such a wife mood.
Just watched this movie for the first time, so happy to see that you guys have watched it already, best feeling!
FIRST! Also can't wait this movie is great! Also Please more ATLA!!!!
22:22 In the script, this part is described as: There is caos on every screen.
Love this movie, alongside Tucker and Dale vs Evil. Both movies flip the horror tropes and provide a funny yet refreshing take on the genre.
This is an awesome underrated flick. Big ties to the Buffy and Angel t.v. shows. There's also a subtle reference to Wolfram and Heart.
That subscribe button placement caught me off guard 😂 brilliant
Exceptionally good horror movie that like Scream, the meta commentary is great.
Mr Hardman may also find it interesting to learn the main character of The Expanse series is named James Holden but goes by Holden
We audiences are the gods. We destroy when we are not entertained.
nice little touch for you guys, this was Chris Hemworths first movie, but due to delays and what not, this didnt get released till after Thor had released, and the movie happened to do much better because Chris was in this
Actually, Star Trek (2009) was C. H. 's first movie, not this one.
@@edwardlasso3092 i always forget about Star Trek lmao
I remember vaguely watching this in theaters when it released and once I was out of that theater I've loved this movie ever since
Drew Goddard is a close collaborator of Joss Whedon and he worked on both Buffy and Angel (and even the comic book continuations) so it can easily understood how one could mistake this for a Whedon picture.
That's what I've always got from him
On a side note, Holden about to get demonetized for showing his feet too often on camera ;)
Drew Goddard is a god when it comes to writing twists and characters that play completely against type
The instances where it happened to other people are other horror movies. And, the old ones that the movie is attempting to please are us, the audience.
directed by Joss Weldon???????? lol
Opening credits: Directed by Drew Goddard. Multiple times afterward Holden says Directed by Joss Whedon. 🤦♂️
XD The tracking on the booba subscribe was perfect. Lol
I forgot about the deets of that final segment in the lab area where all the monsters are killing everyone. It's like SCP containment breach.
Never realized until now, since saw _Cabin in the Woods_ so long ago, but I recognize Holden (the movie character, not our host) from _Detroit: Become Human_
Sure enough; Jesse Williams is the voice, and clearly the model, for Markus.
