This is my favorite anecdote about this film. It happened an an early screening of the film with a Q&A with the director afterwards where someone asked him this question.
I mean hey, maybe a sequel about weird giant eldritch gods with huge hands beating the shit out of each other would still be fun to watch at least, lmao (but no yeah what an unbelievably dumb question, I did not know this anecdote and I love it)
@@MalkuthSephira "weird giant eldritch gods with huge hands beating the shit out of each other" Isn't this kind of what the Transformers movies are? I know there are humans in those movies, but come on, it's just giant robots fighting each other that people go to see.
I actually LOVE this movie. It's so smart, fun and unique! I love how they play with so many horror movie stereotypes, and still do it in their own way, even making jokes about horror movie tropes.
(SPOILERS) I love the layers the movies gets to when it comes to tropes and stereotypes. Like, they were SO busy trying to fabricate the perfect victims by drugging and manipulating people that they failed to realize that this particular group -cannonically the one that would bring down the entire system - *WAS* comprised of the 5 exact archetypes, already, but in reverse order to the ones they tried to force them to be: The "jock" was a post-graduate in Social Studies and his very first scene had him reccomending books and fields of study to the protagonist. (so, scholar) The "whore" was in the same - monogamic - relationship since high school and her firts scene had her insecure about her own appearance, using self deprecating jokes. She is also a kind goofball that makes silly jokes. (so, the fool) The "virgin" was having an affair with a married professor and her first scene has her wearing no pants while meeting her best friend and best friend's boyfriend, she also complains the most about random stuff. (So, by horror movie standards, the whore) The "scholar" has his abs lusted over by the camera and the "virgin" and his first scene had him catching a ball flawlessly thrown from across the street and inside a building. (So, actual jock) The "fool" is AMAZINGLY lucky, survives to the end of the movie, is the one to notice things are wrong, tries to tell the others and is ignored, is nice to his friends, even when they are not to him, is naïve and has zero sexual interactions. (so, the actual virgin)
This is honestly such a good breakdown and totally nails every detail, damn. Yep, they played themselves. Got cocky and didn't learn enough about these people to figure out who would be best to manipulate in what ways, or what the ideal timing would be
That's a VERY popular theory, and I hate it with passion. The whole point of the movie is that people CAN'T be reduced to stereotypes. It's not that they were stereotyped wrong; it's that stereotyping is wrong in general.
Fun fact: The guy who plays the stoner was WAY more muscular than Chris Hemsworth’s character , which is why he has oversized clothes and hoodies all the time. It wouldn’t have made sense for a stoner to have a more muscular body than a jock. I always found that interesting.
@@Musicluvr4 The "jock" was a post-graduate in Social Studies and his very first scene had him reccomending books and fields of study to the protagonist. I was happy that they switched the role of the stoner. Usually in horror and comedies, they make the stoner characters silly or dumb. But this time, it is the stoner who knew something was off. Marty was the ONLY one to figure shit out and tried to warn his friends. But no one listened and ended up doing the typical dumb shit you see in the genre. Marty is the best character in this movie! Partly because I relate to him since I'm a stoner as well. Dude was also funny when he needed to be.
Yeah him being a stoner actually helped him out because it countered whatever drugs they were giving the group to act out their specific roles. It's a fun nod at how people would say that drugs will mess with your mind, but in his case he was able to see clearer than the others because of it.
the nods and references throughout the movie as well, it's a love letter to the horror genre. Makes you think what if all the slasher and horror films with a killer actually has this people controlling the scenarios behind the scenes. haha
fun fact: it was this role that made joss whedon (producer of this movie and director of the avengers) put chris hemsworth’s name in the ring for Thor. They filmed this in 2009/2010 but never got released until 2012 about a year after Thor was released.
My two favorite bits of trivia have to do with Marty: 1) he was more jacked than any one else in the cast so that’s why he wore such baggy clothes. Look at his legs during the daytime dock/lake scene. 2) his thermos/bong was a practical prop that cost $5000 for the crew to construct.
So happy to see you guys enjoying one of my all-time favorites! The movie that finally answers questions us horror fans have asked for years. Questions like, "why is it the virgin who always survives?" "why do people make the absolute dumbest choices they could possibly make?" "why does there always have to be sex and/or nudity and why do those people always get killed?" "why is there always a creepy gas station attendant or a crazy person who warns everyone, and they don't listen?". I've always just written them off as the things that need to happen so there's a movie...now I know it's all part of a plan to appease ancient gods so they don't end us all.
one of my favorite things about this movie is how it blends a concept like what we saw in The Truman Show (Truman reference with the security guard's name btw hehe) with the satirical horror aspects of, mainly, The Evil Dead franchise. i think it works so well and the result was something really unique even though there were so many call backs and references to classic horror movies and horror tropes

I love this movie ❤
i always thought that the ancient gods were us, the audience, demanding death and pain and sex but easily angered if were not happy with the "offering" aka the movie, any horror movie really
bradley whitford has silver foxified so hard since the release of this movie that even knowing it’s him i have trouble believing it tbh
i’ve never wanted to be a wolf so bad
My absolute favorite horror movie 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
