    Fun fact: Moana setting and inspiration is from all the Polynesian cultures mixed together. Like for example, some of the songs are sang in Tokelauan language and the costumes has like a mixture of Samoan and Tongan traditional clothing..so its all blended together beautifully. And the character Maui has different interpretations and versions of him in every Polynesian culture.

      there are even a few kiwi voice actors throughout the movie I notice straight away, like moana’s dad and the fisherman, even tamatoa- and as an australian the new zealand accent is even rly distinct from ours so not noticing it is interesting. may just be that kiwi actors get even less of a chance to use their real accents in mainstream hollywood films than us, so it isn’t recognised as kiwi in the US, etc.?

    The black patch her and grandma were dancing on the beach was a patch of black lava called pahoehoe (sounds like pa-hoy-hoy). I'm crazy lucky to live Hawai'i Island and the islands are made out of 2 types of lava.. the smoother kind that flows out in layers of ropy sheets (like the piece they're dancing on), and the other is a'a (sounds like ah-ah). It's gnarly, sharp, jagged stuff. So some beaches have smoother pahoehoe on them, others the rougher a'a (that the ocean smooths out to some degree, over time).

    • @hankakah4180
      @hankakah4180 Год назад +13

      Pele and Maui are common in many Polynesian cultures. In Hawaii we are the Kanaka Maoli, and our language used to sound like the Kanaka Maori until the Missionaries came and changed our letters to represent K for T, L for R, to fit their printing of their bibles which then preached as their GOD that Hawaiians should listen to, and not their own. Our chicken is moa, like your huge flightless birds that became extinct. Our Pua'a is pig, like your poaka, while we use a glottal stop or 'okina to represent a missing consonant. You might still say Tahiti, while Hawaiians say Kahiki, you may say Tapa, but we say Kapa. You may say aroha, we say aloha.
      I was told of New Zealand Maori elders who came to the Island of Hawai'i to the southern most point of the island, and they chanted a chant of where they came from. The came from a place called Hawaiki, where there were cliffs and mooring holes. If you go there, you will see the cliffs and the boulders along the shoreline that were drilled with holes in which to moor their canoes to. When the Maori elders saw these, they cried, as their chants were real, that they understood where they came from.

    I remember trying not to cry when the grandmother died because I had just lost my grandfather the month before the movie came out, but I still love this movie to this day.

    Wait what?! Bryce had 'Grave of the Fireflies' on his b-day watch list?! Bryce is a keeper! Obviously he knows his classic Anime. A little dark for celebrating - but Bryce is sooo cute and obviously smart.

    Funny that you mentioned “The Climb” during “How Far I’ll Go” because they are a bit interchangeable and you can sing them with the others’ karaoke track

    Banger movie. Saw it when it came out with my little girl. She adored it and so did I. To this day it's still my all-time fav disney movie.
    I had the chance to live on a very small island in the indian ocean for 2 years, and while it wasn't the same culture, it was still absolutely life changing. The people resonate with me a lot, and I wish I could go back

    I remember my brother and his wife asking me to watch a movie together. And as I love movies I said yes....when Moana goes into the ocean and it parts with the BEAUTIFUL imagery....I said to them "wow looks like Pixar has really stepped up" to which they said "No this is Disney"
    To which I said ""Holy fuck this is Disney?!"
    It has since become my fav Disney movie....last one being Hercules.
    I love this movie...its so good with such a good heart....ughh just makes me smile whenever I get to see it.

    This movie makes me feel super proud of my heritage and more connected to it(I'm native American) I am metis,but I wish I was first nations instead(the other branch is Inuit) I think i only wished I could be that after this movie. I feel like I am first nations though. Its kind of frustrating.

    I feel like it would have been more inclusive had they made the movie represent Micronesians and Melanesians too. Nothing plot changing, just songs in their languages, or visuals that reference them

    Happy belated birthday Bryce! I’m the 12th May so close to yours. Hope you had a great day and glad you enjoyed the movie. It’s up there for me as one of my favourite Disney movies and was stoked to see you guys react to it. Was the best thing to see after a nightmare shift at work. Thanks for always being the best reactors ❤
