Ngl when I first watched the movie I went that way, but on further rewatches I also found it to be a metaphor about abuse - Te Fiti, the mother island literally created everything, and people still went and "stole"/broke her heart. This betrayal caused her to warp to a destructive form of herself. Te Ka isnt screaming in rage - to me its pain, the on going pain from the abuse they suffered and the desperation to recover/heal. The final song helps with that "This is not who you are".

Not sure if anyone else mentioned it, but the grandma went downhill very fast because she gave Moana the heart of tafiti. The heart can create life itself and since the grandmother wore it around her neck for so long, it kept her healthy and strong. Once she gave it away, her health and age caught up to her.

Yeah, I loved that part of the movie, too. Gramma Tala didn't press Moana into going back to the mission because "the ocean chose her", that she had to continue because it's her responsibility and all that jazz, unlike other animation movies do. She let Moana decide for herself, and for me this is what sets this movie apart from other films with the same premise (the protagonist having this huge responsibility about being a "savior" of some kind).

Moana is a mix of many Oceanic cultures (Polyneaisa, Micronesia, and Melanesia) but mostly Samoan. Moana, for example, means ocean in Hawaiian, but the village style and how they dress is mostly Samoan. Their canoe style can be seen on many islands. They did a great job respectfully telling a new story while showing a little about our cultures. Maui is a legend throughout the islands as a Master island finder, maybe a real person or a myth, when Oceanians were populating the islands of the Pacific. They said he could pull islands from the ocean with his hook. The hook is symbolic and important to Hawaiians as it's how you fish, symbolizing good fortune and abundance.

    • @heysulfuric2372
      @heysulfuric2372 5 месяцев назад +83

From the maori side, one version I was told said Maui was actually thought to be a stillbirth, so he was wrapped in his mothers hair and given a sea burial. Then he floats off and is protected by sea creatures as he was delivered to guardians who raised him. Ive always wondered if our poly cousins had similar origin stories, this movie has an interesting interpretation of this. Another version said the hook was shaped from the jawbone of his supernatural grandmother, who willingly gave it up to him. That weapon he uses to literally beat and cripple the sun, slowing its passage, and to fish up our homeland, nz.

the film also covers a lot of things from the Maori culture aswell, considering Maui is a legend from Maori Mythology and the Maori haka is performed little by little by him throughout the film. Also, Moana means ocean in Maori too and Heihei meaning chicken etc 🤣 The film definitely includes a lot of different cultures, but I’d say Samoan and Maori the most! :)

The story of Tefiti can be read as a metaphor for trauma (particularly sa) when someones heart/innocence is taken without permission. She became hardened and cruel, as the lava monster, she was trying to protect what was left of herself by lashing out and attacking, which is so common for victims.
The song that Moana sings to her is so beautiful and pertinent, it broke me when I first saw this and actually helped to get me started on my own journey of healing from childhood Traumas.

Can you think of another chosen one story in which a character apologizes for placing such a burden on the hero and tells them it’s 100% okay to give up and go back if they can’t do it, no reminders of the consequences, no guilt tripping? In that moment when the hero has lost all hope, someone is generally there to say, “Oh, it’s awful what’s happening to you, but if you fail your loved ones will die, everyone will be disappointed in you, and the world will burn. Is that okay with you? If it is, maybe you aren’t who I thought you were. If you’re the good, strong person I think you are, let’s go.”

Im so glad you did this one! Its one of my absolute favorite disney movies. Moana is up there with mulan and belle as my favorite disney princesses. I have seen this movie so many times and i will always sit down and watch it agwin any time it is on. This movie has meant so much more since having three daughters of my own.
I cry like a baby when moana sails onto her island and runs into her parents arm. Her dad was trying to protect her because of his trauma and ot turned into gaslighting her but in the end he accepts that she is meant to go past the reef. I also love that Grandma Tala is seen as the village "crazy lady" but she really was the only one who could see "beyond the reef" and help moana find her purpose

But I also really like the idea of the chieftain stone pile. Receiving and accepting the responsibility of raising a place higher one layer, one generation at a time is a really cool thing in and of itself.
All in all, both is extremely valid as long as you stay true to yourself.

In Tahitian, "motu" means "island" and "nui" means "new". While different, all the Polynesian languages are closely related, from Maori in New Zealand all the way to Hawaii. For example, "hare", "hale", and "fale" all mean house, in different languages.

This is one of the best movies about identity. I joke often about doing a marathon of The Departed, then The Lighthouse, then Moana for a light-hearted palate cleanser after that heavy middle lol. Truly a brilliant, wise, important film. Some of my best friends are in recovery and absolutely adore the lessons this teaches. My favorite moment is when Maui tells himself (his tattoo) "I love you". Him finally loving himself marks his turning point and it's SO AMAZIIINNNGGGG! 😁 So glad you guys finally saw this!

    • @ItsAsparageese

Oh also: The tattoo is not only himself, but specifically his highest/best self, which makes it even better. And I love how one of Moana's first actions after meeting him is to knock down his giant statue as she escapes the cave, which I interpret as a foreshadow of his ego death that precedes his rebirth. There's a ton of incredible psychology symbolism all throughout the film, and I notice more and more with every rewatch.

Thank you guys for reacting to Moana! This movie meant so much to me being a POC, having representation and education of these cultures being brought to the big screen 😊
Not sure what you guys have next in terms of Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks animated-type movies, but I’d love for y’all to react to 1998’s Mulan! That movie was a staple of my childhood and my first introduction to a badass female character. Personally, I love how although in the beginning she struggles with finding herself and figuring out her purpose, she ultimately sets out on an epic journey that ends with her making a mark on her country and showing what females can accomplish when given the opportunity. 👏🏽 It features an insanely talented voice cast - speaking AND singing - including Eddie Murphy, which I know you guys LOVED from the Shrek series. It also has the legendary George Takei, James Hong, Ming Na-Wen, BD Wong, Donny Osmond, and Lea Salonga (fun fact: who was also the singing voice of princess Jasmine in Aladdin).
It has great lessons (which I know the Oak will appreciate), hilarious knee-slap type humor that still stands today, catchy songs you can’t help but dance along to, and overall an incredible storyline stemming from Chinese culture that will not only educate but amaze and entertain.
Please check it out if you guys have the time; if so, I hope you’ll enjoy it just as much as I do! Thanks again for the great reactions and content, you make some slow work days much easier each time you upload a new one! Keep up the great work! 😁
