Badd Medicine here and its Brave reaction time
Brave is a 2012 American computer-animated fantasy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The film was directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman (in the former's feature directorial debut), co-directed by Steve Purcell, and produced by Katherine Sarafian, with John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, and Pete Docter serving as executive producers. The story was written by Chapman, who also wrote the film's screenplay with Andrews, Purcell, and Irene Mecchi. The film stars the voices of Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters, Robbie Coltrane, Kevin McKidd, and Craig Ferguson. Set in the Scottish Highlands, the film tells the story of Princess Merida of DunBroch (Macdonald) who defies an age-old custom, causing chaos in the kingdom by expressing the desire not to be betrothed. When Queen Elinor (Thompson), her mother, falls victim to a beastly curse and turns into a bear, Merida must look within herself and find the key to saving the kingdom.

This movie is so beautiful. It's a Disney princess movie that doesn't include a love interest (which is not a bad thing to have, but it's good to have something different coming from Disney and it's ORIGINAL and not a remake yk) or a prince saving the princess. It's a love story but between a daughter and mother, it teaches you a lesson as well and it just feels good and fresh to have a Disney princess movie with more cultural aspects. It has a lot of comical aspect as well but really well balanced, it's not too much or put weirdly. I honestly cry everytime I watch it. Sooo underrated!

Ig it's bcs back then, it was the norm to have a need for a love interest, so Brave showed the first princess with no prince. HOWEVER- now it's basically taboo to have a romantic interest for the princess :( and not only that.... They're even making it so that the prince is seen as useless... like it's downright wrong for the MCs to want love. It's not wrong to want love, but it's also not wrong to not want it... but Disney nowadays just likes to choose extremes for their characters, God forbid they have both (like Tiana, for example 🙄).

I was surprised that the mother turned into a bear as well, but it makes sense now. Since the mom couldn't talk or do much, she was finally forced to listen to Merida and let Merida take more charge. So she finally could get to know her and see her as a person not an extension of herself.
Edit: And with the risk of losing her mother to the curse Merida realized how much she actually loves and needs her.
In this weird new circumstance where they had to work together and they didn't have the means to argue they could finally form a connection and learn to appreciate each another.

NO, mom being turned into a bear finally have Merida the opportunity to see how everything falls apart without her mother and how her mother does more than Merida ever gave her credit for. It gave Merida necessary push to grow up and assume the responsibilities of a princess.

@MegaMilenche the mom was literally controlling her every moment to make her into her. How is that not her treating her child like an extension of herself?
Then, to call her spoiled and irresponsible? Do you mean the girl that was shown to take care of her little brothers? Do any chores despite her mom telling her it's not her responsibility?
She's soooo spoiled, getting just a bow as the only possession she cares about, then just anything her mom said was "needed to be a lady."(which she didn't want) Seems reaaaaaal spoiled.........
Nothing "fell apart" with her mom gone, her mom being a bear and still trying to solve things herself caused most problems. It looks like you either missed or are deliberately ignoring the plot points.
One point was for her to see her mom cared for her in her own way and only wanted whats "best"( in her eyes), but the main plot is for the mom to realise her child is not her. She can't control every aspect of her life. Treating your kid that way is how you end up not being in their life, like she almost was. She realised her kid had her own life under control and backed off, bringing them closer than before. It's pretty blatant.

I like that you guys called out the witch for being a bit unusual in this movie. My guess is that she's supposed to be a fairy. Sometimes fairies in folklore do want something from the mortals they meet (they have a real thing for stealing children) but other times they just like testing and tempting people for the fun of it. Plus the fact that her house wasn't always there? That's very in-line with fairy folklore, too.

And the conditions to break the spell was very in line with fey folklore. It's my pinion that the line, "Mend the bond torn by pride" had four layers to it.
1st: The easy one is her bond with her Mother.
2nd: The tapestry. That was a work of love and dedication that Elenor did herself, and it probably took years. Plus with the quality of materials and gold thread, it was VERY expensive. And it was a physical representation of the severed bond.
3rd: Merida's actions at the contest nearly tore the bond of the four clans apart and took them to war. That was something else she needed to fix.
4th: She needed to free Mor'Du, and end the tragedy he started when he tore the four kingdons apart.
I, also, think that the four clans are the remnants of the four kingdoms and that could make Mor'Du her ancestor, so that was a family obligation as well. All of this fits in the fey justice. Not only is there a price, but a lesson.

What I love about this movie is that it's not just a spell misshap or a 'be careful what you wish for'. I think the spell worked EXACTLY as intended. It forced both Merida and her mother to examine who they are and what they value in themselves and in each other. Eleanor learned to see the strengths that Merida had that she never valued before because she was caught up in the way she believed a Princess had to be, and Merida learned to appreciate the hard work her mother put in to her role at court and into raising her children, and that her strictness in preparing Merida for her future role was how Eleanor showed how deeply she loved her. They were both too proud to compromise before the spell forced them, at a strict time limit, to face their differences and accept each other and take steps towards each other. And they did. They were able to do that, where Mordu clearly failed. And they both came out of it changed. So, Merida's wish - to change her mother - DID actually come true. So yeah, not an evil witch, the witch was just chilling, trying to sell her carvings, and gave Merida exactly what she wanted.

  • @PillowHairBlog
    @PillowHairBlog 8 месяцев назад +102

The witch being a "helper" is a common trope in fairytales and folklore. They are often just village elders or travelling merchants with a bit of trickster in them, but no ill will or own evil intentions. They are rarely interested in what the "hero" does with the magical item they sell them.
Problems usually occur when the "hero" doesn't understand the consequences of the magic or does something different than instructed to, and trying to take the magic back never works. It's usually moral stories with life lessons. Having the witch be funny and forgetful in this case was a laugh. But Merida was too distracted by her own desires to think of details and consequences, leading to her moral life lesson could happening.

It also showcases that we may have to fight for it, but with understanding and love, from both sides, it’s possible. Also, on the “just f’in amazing” side of things…they came up with a new way to animate every strand of Merida’s hair individually. Totally changed the game. He hair is GLORIOUS.

You're right, Mérida's hair is beautiful.
On the other hand, there are more princesses who do not look for love at first sight or who do not maintain a romantic relationship. Mulan, Tiana, Belle, Pocahontas and Rapunzel do not fight for love, it is not the main subject of their stories. They just found love along the way.
Elsa, Penelope, and Moana have no love interests, just like Merida. Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Anna and Jasmine can indeed fit into this description of “lovesick princesses”, even if for some of them, this is not yet the only aspect of their personality.

It's always a good time when it's a Pixar reaction.
Brave is a bit of a personal favourite, as I'm half Scottish and did see this in the cinema while up in Scotland visiting family back in 2012.
One issue someone else might have mentioned here is that the original director and writer, Brenda Chapman (known for the Prince of Egypt & Beauty & the Beast) ended up being taken off the film for 'creative differences' with John Lasseter.
It was completely unfair imo, as she created the story and was the first female director for a Pixar film, then they took her off it.
And I think it's a bit dubious, as Lasseter left Disney later due to allegations of sexual misconduct towards women.

I went to see this in theaters with my mom which was fun because personality-wise we're just the opposite of Merida & Elinor. I remember at the time this came out some conservative circles disliked it because they felt it put down feminine activities and promoted rebelliousness, which I find so ridiculous. Part of what Merida had to do to un-do the spell was literal sewing/mending of the tapestry (at night, in the rain, on horseback- she's obviously got to be somewhat good at it to even be able to accomplish it in those circumstances) and finally listening to her mom's point of view (which they seemed to think was invalided just because it was shown Elinor needed to listen to her as well) She was ready to make the hard choice to marry one of the suitors if that was what was necessary to stop war from breaking out and it was only when she finally took responsibility for the consequences of her actions towards her mom that the spell was finally reversed. The movie shows the solution is to act with maturity and reasonableness but they get stuck on some sassiness from the first 10 minutes of runtime.

What I love about this film is the message and how it links with the title imo. I agree with the Answer that the film is really about how Merida was always brave and the film showed Eleanor becoming braver to have a relationship with her only daughter. Between parents and children there is a natural imbalance of power, and when you hit teen years the gap is very small. I think the burden is on the parents to be brave and after all the years of steering Merida in a particular direction, she was very brave to relinquish some of that power so her daughter could become stronger. It was brave to step into her daughters world which was scary and uncomfortable and give her child the support she needed 🥰 beautiful film ☺️

Fun facts about the 'gibberish' speaking guy- he's actually speaking in Doric!
Here's a bit from the wiki about him.
Young MacGuffin lines are all in a dialect of Scots language known as Doric. Doric is traditionally spoken on the North Eastern Coast of Scotland, between Inverness and Stonehaven. Kevin McKidd, a Scots speaker, requested the use of Doric, these lines were originally intended to be in gibberish:
"Gif he war a wee bit closer A coud lob a caber at him, ye ken" (trans: "If he were a little bit closer I could throw a tree trunk at him, you know.")
"It's jist nae fair makin us ficht for the hand o the quine that disnae want any bit o it. Ken?" (trans: It's just not fair making us fight for the hand of the girl that doesn't want any part of it. You know?")
"Since yer sayin' it an' ah wisn't there t' see it maself, I'll gae ahead and take yer word fer it though." (trans: "Since you are saying it and I wasn't there to see it for myself, I'll go ahead and take your word for it.")

I love that when the movie came out I recognized Merida’s voice. She was the love interest in Boardwalk Empire! Kelly Macdonald has the prettiest Scottish voice

That is why I love BRAVE. It's not the typical story about a Prince saving the day.

And as someone who does archery and having heard the praise from my teachers before, the way they animated the shooting is SO incredibly accurate, it jusr makes this movie even more amazing

This movie has some of the most deep rooted nostalgia for me. It’s always been a top fav princess movie, tied with Tangled. I used to watch Brave 24/7. I’d sit in the living room and put this movie on, and id be eating 3+ clementine cuties during. For some reason my brain felt clementines made me part of the movie, idk, I think it was the tiny cakes, tiny fruit. But. I can’t eat a clementine without thinking of brave, and vice versa.
    Excited to watch this reaction!!

I have seen and heard from other people that Disney created a new editing program for merida’s hair which is why the Encanto characters have fabulous hair.

I like the way her mom displays true power at 12:20. Respect for the queen is just as strong as any sword or spear.

The actress who played Merida was also the Grey Lady AKA Helena Ravenclaw in Deathly Hallows part 2

I love Brave. Im the independent, sassy, wild curly haired girl. I have been riding and showing horses my whole life so that part was fun. I was just like y'all in thinking the mom would be lost.
