@@Melody-zu4gx right...Rocks can't float. Maui is voiced by the Rock (Dwayne Johnson), so the only thing Maui can't do is float. The joke was specifically added because of the casting.
i think many people try to say "why doesn't the ocean just take it or her back" forgetting the first scene where Moana assists a baby turtle to the ocean, she knows she cant pick it up and put it there, that the turtle has to forge it's path into the world, in order to find it's way home again. love this film, it was the first to be dubbed in my native language, Te Reo Māori, and many Māori and Pacifica people worked together with the creators at disney to bring authenticity to the story. Taika Waititi was the one who pitched this film to Disney too:) loved your reaction xo
Yeah, that's nonsense. The baby turtle will never remember that experience. The belief that it would, in any way, impact the rest of the turtle's life is entirely ridiculous. The problem, is that the turtle should've been eaten. That's nature. Moana interfered, but half-assed it. Simple as that. What people don't want to admit, is that nature sucks, at everything. People want nature to be the best, because they're scared that if intellect and logic are the best, those without it will be the ones to suffer. You want proof that nature is garbage? I submit to you, the epiglottis. Imbibing to incompatible mediums into two completely unrelated processors, through the same orifice. And if that stupid little flap messes up at all, you choke...to DEATH. Everything nature does, science can do better, given time and effort. Everything you think nature is so great at, took it millions of years of endless random failures to get to. We've almost caught up in an absolutely minuscule fraction of the time and with far fewer mistakes.
@@DoremiFasolatido1979sure, so few mistakes that the ice caps are melting and CO2 levels are climbing so rapidly as to threaten the lives of humanity even within the next few decades. So few mistakes that South Africa is just... literally OUT of water. You're right, we're doing just GRAND 😂
@@DoremiFasolatido1979 sorry but its common knowledge (This has been proven by science.)that you dont pick up a turtle to place it in the ocean, as it imprints on the beach when it makes it way from hatching to the ocean for the first time. There is nothing wrong with being kind to nature- thats why the ocean acknowledged moana and gave her the heart in the first place.
I am Maori from New Zealand and our myths and legends include that of Maui and his fish hook, we believe he fished up the land from the bottom of the ocean.. we also tell stories of Mother Earth (Papatuanuku) and Father Sky (Ranginui) who held themselves in a tight embrace and bore many sons.. We Polynesians are master navigators of the oceans and travelled all throughout the pacific settling on islands as we voyaged such as Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, the Cook Islands, Tahiti etc.. it always amazes me how similar we all are in our myths and legends, our language and food and appearance.. ver special movie to me, I cry every time.. ❤ great reaction guys 😉 Also, "Hei Hei" literally means Chicken in the Maori language.. 😁

Getting stuck in the reef after a wipeout feels exactly like that (13:31). Got stuck three times, two facing up and once facing down. Facing up, you see how beautiful it looks as you're running out of oxygen.
the voice of Moana - Auli'i Cravalho, was 14 when she got cast in the lead role. She graduated from Kamehameha School - a private school for students of Hawaiian descent. Dwayne Johnson attended McKinley High School - a public school in Honolulu before he relocated to the U.S. mainland... The voice of Moana's mother is also from Hawai'i - Nicole Scherzinger....
Growing up Little Mermaid was my favorite, but now it is definitely Moana. I am a total waterbaby, and I had an incredible bond with my Nan , so this movie touched me. I love Lin-Manuel Miranda, all of his projects are ones I adore. Even his direction of Tick Tick Boom (which I recommend!) are among my most listened/watched. :)

If no one's mentioned it, it's not odd to cry during a Disney movie. It was Walt Disney's entire goal. People considered cartoons not to be art and he wanted to prove adults could become just as attached to an animated character as a live action one. And the best way to prove that is to create a situation where you cry for a character. Crying in animated Disney movies is literally by design. 😂
The grandmother's spirit animal ('aumakua) is the Manta Ray, a non-dangerous creature. Swimming with manta rays (at night!) is a popular activity on the Big Island.
I generally love that they are making a second Moana, I have watched Moana over 15 times and can almost basically recite the whole movie by heart and I know all the songs by heart. 😊
25:26 Maui in Māori history was a demigod who did all kinds of heroic and trickster stuff that benefitted the tangata whenua (people of the land) he slowed the sun by giving it a hiding, he fished up the north island of my country, and his waka is the south island, he stole fire from mahuika for human, and all kinds of awesome feats. he died when he tried to defeat death herself and was crushed inside of her when he tried to assassinate her as a bug. I personally didnt really think the rock was good casting for him, and his character design bothered me too (Maui was the runt of his family and he was a clever, cheeky, cunning sort of person in the stories), but i think disney needed an archetype and sort of took his strength LITERALLY and made him a swol tank. Plus the Rock's haka (war chant/dance) leaves a lot to be desired lol. But since it is "just" a movie. and so much of it is excellent i can overlook it. its just amazing to have representation of pacific cultures in the same lexicon as other disney classics and when i went to see it in theatres it was incredible seeing all the brown children in the audience fall in love with a movie and characters that look like them and represent themes and values they hold dear
Well, remember, the rock is half samoan and relatively popular so marketing-wise it was smart to have him as a main/supporting character. Especially since I'm sure most people know little to nothing about samoan/pacific island people.
@@fireeaglefitnessmartialart935 i understand why he was cast, and he was great, but like i said i "personally" didnt think the casting was right for my tastes
Most of the music in the movie like “Tulou Tagaloa” in the very beginning “logo te pate” during Moana and Maui’s training already existed way before the movie. What makes this Disney movie different is that, Pacific Islanders worked behind the movie’s music with Lin Manuel. The legendary musician Opetaia Foa’i who started the band Te Vaka worked on the music as well with Te vaka to sing the songs. The background voices as well were sung by a Fijian choir from the University the South Pacific, was lead by another pacific legend named Igelese Ete and Te Vaka of course. This movie is dear to us Pacific Islanders because it show cases our cultures to the world
