The history of native Pacific island peoples and sailing is INCREDIBLE! The feats of navigation alone are completely mind blowing. For hundreds of years, generations unfailingly knew exactly where they were and where they were going.
This is history about all the islands of The pacific ocean like Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga & Fiji etc. Im glad you guys reacted to this movie, as I’m a pacific islander myself!😊
As a pacific islander i personally think it is also about the micronesians and melansians in a way since the setting of moana occured during the 'long pause' in which the lapita people whom which settled the pacific stopped sailing the seas for a long period of time after settling in larger islands in the pacific such as New guinea, And solomons islands. And after the long pause they begin setteling the rest of the pacific islands such as Vanuatu, New caledonia, fiji, samoa, tonga, tahiti, Hawaii and the rest of melenasia, polynesia and Micronesia. This can be seen in the movie where moana's father banned sailing the oceans for a long time and After moana restored the heart they beginning voyaging again setteling the rest of the pacific islands. And to add on the Moana movie diliveres a very important message, a crisis that the whole pacific island nations are impacted by which is climate change.
Many of the pacific islands are created by volcanic activity & the resulting soil is incredibly rich so the idea of lava/destruction and fertility/creation being two sides of the same thing makes total sense.
Plus he actually sings in "We Know The Way". It was only once Is heard him in other things that I realised this. He has a very recognisable singing voice, that I actually really like.
LMAO yeah the talk no jutsu was definitely there, but I think that’s why they had the contrast of Te Ka coming at Moana hella crazy and Moana remaining completely calm. Te Ka definitely could have taken her out in that moment, but I think Moana knows that, and it parallels when Moana was having the heart to heart with Maui and she was like, “You can throw me off the boat if you want” like you can come at her hella aggressive, but she is still going to help cause thats her character. So I think that vibe check they had coming forehead to forehead like that was meant to show Moana’s determination to help and return the heart whether she dies or not, but the talk no jutsu sprinkled in was just too good too!! The Moana songs are some of the best!!
Y'all's pure glee that Maui was going to eat the chicken made my entire day; I giggled for a while over it. It's cold and rain here in my home of Alaska, and I used to live in Samoa, so this whole reaction was a delight. Subscribed! P.S. Moana literally translates to "ocean" in Samoan, and is a relatively common name there. Fun fact!
Here on the Island of Guam (Micronesia), we would rarely hear of Chamorro names, but the Chamorro names that we do hear every now and again is always "Tåsi" or "Nåpu" meaning "ocean" and "wave" respectively. I guess we all are just unoriginal lmao
The 'Headbut' as you called it at the end is a traditional Polynesian greeting and show of respect. It's called a 'Hongi', depending on whether you are Tongan or Samoan or Maori or Hawaiian it is done differently, sometimes by simply pressing noses together and sometimes by pressing both the nose and the forehead. It symbolises sharing the 'Breath of Life' with another person.
Hi, Pacific-Islander here! Yes, traditional, non-instrument techniques use both the sky and the ocean to navigate. Many of our islands were very small, so we used navigation to find more places to live, and find food. That's how we survived back in the day. :) I'd recommend looking up Mau Piailug, he's the reason why traditional navigation still exists. Disney never gave him credit, but he's real lol. Great reaction, guys! Mahalo for the video!
Growing up in New Zealand and being of Maori descent I grew up hearing the story of Maui and Mother Ranginui and Father Papatuanuku. All Polynesian legends have similarities as all are stemmed from the same story. We are sea faring people, master navigators, people of earth and water. In my family and in my opinion, most Maori whanau (family) we have a close connection and deep respect for our ancestors. We come from a long line of chiefs. I can trace my ancestry back to the Captain of my Tribal Waka (The Canoe by which my people arrived in Aotearoa aka New Zealand). Great movie and great reaction Guys. 👍 Kia Ora
Might just be the part of New Zealand I'm from, but isn't it father Ranginui and mother Papatuanuku? It has been a while since I heard the stories so I might be wrong, but just curious 😅
Moana is one of my top favorite new princesses. I just love the story, culture, music, literally everything. Disney did it right with this one and many other recent movies
@@alharairah2214 Understandable, because Maui to the pacific is not like how Loki is in to the viking, or Unaman to the indians, or Wukong is to the chinese, the other trickster gods. polynesians/pacific islanders are the greatest navigators of the sea, navigating the whole pacific ocean with only stars and constellations. Our islands are small and far apart from each other, but it is said that we are not separated by our islands but connected by the ocean.
@@whenraindropsfallYep, they are. Imagine crossing the trechearous Pacific Ocean with nothing but pitch black view and surviving the unforgiving natural disasters in that part of the world. Because of that, it is believed that, their DNA and culture can be found in both Asia and American continents. Even until now, some of the people who descended from them are being trusted to man ships of any kind in the world.
I feel like it’s not really that hard to understand. The heart belonged to her, she got her heart stolen so she turned angry & fiery. Moana held up the heart HIGH & it started glowing I’m guessing bc the owner of the heart & the thwart itself is close to each other. Moana sings to calm her down & she realized that Moana isn’t trying to hurt her. Moana gives her, her heart & all is saved and swell. she’s happy & green again & turns back into an island. simple.
The Disney revival era is really gorgeous and a new age of storytelling for Disney. It's really fun seeing them explore different cultures and seeing it get warmer feedback than in the 90s.
Te Fiti becoming Tet Ka does make sense when you consider this: when someone takes the bare essence of who you are, Your Heart, away from you, you lose yourself and become someone you never thought you Could become. You crumble and fall into despair, become angry, confused, you lash out and are ultimately lost until you find yourself again
@@AkinReacts Awesome! You’re going to love it. The music is simply epic and it has an all-star cast for the voices. The artists took 2 years just on the parting of the Red Sea to get it right. 🌊🙂 🌊
22:35 The Ocean couldn't help Moana when she was in that situation because since Te Fiti's heart's stolen by Maui, Darkness forges all over the ocean. And not even the ocean could control.
I was still a kid when this came out in theaters, in fact it's the only Disney movie I've actually seen in theaters when it first came out. Have y'all had a chance to see Strange Magic yet? It's a little older but holds up well story wise. It's based loosely on the play by Shakespeare Midsummer's Night Dream but it's not a very serious movie. Very fun if you don't go into it expecting seriousness
I was expecting you guys to make fun of it or say cringe commentary. But seeing you all genuinely enjoy it and even sing along? You just gained a new subscriber. I love you guys lmao keep up your awesome vibe!!
There's going to be a live-action version soon like really soon. The reason, they want to cash in on the Rock success as Maui cuz he will be reprising his role 😊 Also I have a theory, if you ever seen Lilo & stitch then you know about Pudge the fish. My theory is that Pudge is Maui, and Lilo and Nani are Moana's descendants. So now he is watching over his best friends descendants, Maui tried to save Lilo and Nani's parents but was unable to that day they died in that storm.
If you liked this movie and want to see another story of Maori people's traditions and the ocean and a girl who isn't what they wanted but who they needed, I can't recommend the Whale Rider (2004) enough! It will make you cry so much, and it will make your hearts grow 3 sizes.
Yes, Mauii is Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. His real life daughter (3 or 4 years old) loves Moana and she forces Dwayne to sing her the song 'You're Welcome' because she doesn't believe that he's Mauii.
