I love how people are quick to point out when a bad film is made by Disney, when a film is good, they never want to give Disney the credit 😂 the animated one is Disney too!
The way the emperor just walks away will never not be funny. The fact that Shan Yu was the least misogynistic character is hilarious to me. Apparently in the Hun culture, strong women are recognized, there have been female generals and what not. Thats why Shan Yu wasn't shocked at her being a woman, he just said "the solider from the mountain"
I have to say I find this movie a far better representation of women's issues than the remake. She's a normal girl not some super powered flawless mary sue and she has to run around at the end of the film trying to get someone to listen to her for a bit and being dismissed just because she's a girl. However she earns their respect and its a nice if probably unintended touch that the barbarians reaction is just "the soldier from the mountain" he doesn't care that she's a girl just that she's the one responsible for stopping him.
I don't mind the superpower angle, I guess? It was more about her attitude; live-action Mulan seemed to join the army moreso out of rebellion than for selfless reasons.
@@OpticalSorcerer I think it bothered me for a number of reasons. First Disney made a huge deal in the lead up about it being more realistic as their reason for removing Mushu then we get witches, superhuman martial arts and a phoenix so that felt like double speak. Second and more importantly it felt disrespectful to the source material (Chinese source material not animated film) as the whole point of Mulan was her being an ordinary girl who did extraordinary things through hard work and effort rather than some supernatural gift. Third it made her feel flat as she was better than everyone else around her to the point they added in a sister to mess up during the match making scene so it wasn't actually Mulan's fault she just got blamed for it. I do agree with you that she didn't really feel like she was doing it for her family so much as for herself but I can rant for quite awhile about my issues with the remake. I just felt the animated one did a better represenation of a normal girls struggles and what they can obtain if they apply themselves rather than the "Do you have superhuman Chi? No then go away you're useless." message in the remake.
@@liamwarner5749 I could be WAAAY off but I think when they said "more realistic," they meant more accurate to the culture--which, like you said, they didn't do. It frustrates me that the director said rumors of it not beong a musical were false and they were still deliberating it, only to drop the music because the film was about a girl going to war and she didn't know how to incorporate the music--but she would if she could. Kinda feels like she was the wrong person for the job, then. It reminds me of how the writer for Raya said they didn't make it a musical because it would take all the seriousness out of the film (despite the fact that they had a significant amount of comedy in there anyway). As someone who is a BIG fan of superpowers and desperately wants more Disney films with superpowered protagonists (Encanto trolled me, lol), this was executed poorly. Saying that Mulan had an innate talent for being in the army could've been a very ppwerful message concerning gender roles, and even seeing her train and hone her chi/qi could've been a fun journey taking from Chinese fantasy and wuxia films to make something mystical yet authentic. But Mulan's power was naturally controlled (except for it being dunbed down due to her lie) and completely random. Throwing in magical powers deserves some lore building. And of course, removing Shang and Mushu will always frustrate me. TLM remake seems like it'll respect the source material more, and I hope Hercules is the same. If we're getting a bunch of remakes, I'm gonna have HIGH standards.
FUN FACTS: First detail: It’s well known that Mushu (for some reason) could not wake the Great Stone Dragon. Remember that there’s a scene earlier with Mulan at the statue, where she makes the decision to leave. There are many images of dragons in the following scenes with Mulan preparing to leave to protect her father. It’s believed the reason the Great Stone Dragon couldn’t wake up was because IT WAS ALREADY AWAKE AND WAS OFF TO PROTECT THE FAMILY (Mulan) 24:34 Remember! The two weights represent DISCIPLINE and STRENGTH, but you NEED BOTH to reach the arrow. Everyone kept climbing with the weights separated, but once Mulan used BOTH, she then succeeded. 32:07 notice that the first target to get hit was SHEN (the leader of the group). The archers then aimed at the canons with fire arrows, purposefully trying to destroy them. Afterwards, once everyone stopped firing their canons and were down to one, Shan Yu and his army went for a full cavalry charge downhill with absolutely NO FEAR of artillery fire. Needless to say, this ambush was really thought through with the intention of victory. The plan didn’t account for potential avalanches though. ANOTHER DETAIL: Remember Mulan singing, “When will my reflection show who I am inside.” There was a scene you didn’t show with Mulan previously around 33:36 looking at the REFLECTION of her sword, which reflected a MOUNTAIN back at her. 45:21 Actually, Mulan being a woman probably wasn’t that surprising for Shan Yu. Historically speaking, the Huns would allow women to fight as warriors too, so Mulan’s gender probably had nothing to do with Shan Yu’s reaction.

I heard that at least some people from the Chinese audience were unhappy with the hair cutting scene, because, apparently, the soldiers used to keep their hair long, and cutting it was a sacrilege, not what in some Western places people tend to think: a new beginning, a new self.
It would be like mutilating yourself by removing a digit or a whole yourself. Generally, though, Mulan wouldn't even need to cut her hair in order to impersonate a man, they already had hair as long as most women.

You have to remember that Milan is based in Northern China in the Wei dynasty in (386-535 CE) hence the narrative of how women are meant to just be married and have sons to serve the country and remain at home and not speak unless spoken too. Shanu is based on the Huns of whom respect women more and had female warriors and leaders hence why he wasn't surprised that Milan was the solder from the mountains.
I love how you guys title your videos. Most people would have basic titles but you guys make a STATEMENT and I love it 🤣🤣🤣 Mulan is one of my favorite movies and I'm so glad you guys had the chance to watch it. I hope you watch Big Hero 6 soon!
Actually Shan Yu is the only character in the entire movie who doesn't question the fact that Mulan is a woman or that she was able to do what she did. He simply recognized her as "the solider of the mountain" the Huns as a culture had way more respect and rights for their women. Many of them where warriors.
Mulan is one of my favorite princesses and one of the few that wields a sword and can fight. And her sidekick animals are epic. Mulan has a horse because her family could afford it. Horses are expensive now and back then. Also I think the horse may have been her father’s old war horse.
"Imagine King Charles telling us to fight for England" and then all three bursting out laughing is the biggest mood I have ever seen! I love these three!
She wasn't a Disney princess but she's my FAVORITE classic heroine to this day! Such a warrior ❤️ also don't know if you guys are taking recommendations but 'my name ' is a really good show ..
Shan Yu was actually not surprised Mulan was a woman. Women were easily able to join Hun armies because their primary weapon was the bow which relied mostly on skill rather than strength like melee combat. They had plenty of fellow female warriors and some tribal leaders were female.
Hands down my favourite Disney movie. Nothing else comes close. Great writing, amazing characters, awesome animation, and mind-blowing cinematography. (Did you notice the movie abruptly stopped being a musical when they found the massacred village?) Also, probably the single most feminist and queer positive Disney movie ever made (Li Shang is an absolute bi icon), and that's including the newer ones. Mulan does it effortlessly, where newer movies try *way* too hard.
Mulan has always been my favorite Disney princess. I do however think Moana ties in first place. Mulan sacrifice herself to save her father and her country and Moana sacrifice herself to save her island and her family.
as a trans person the song 'Reflection' is the single most relatable song ever. Even tho Mulan isnt transgender the song still captures the experience of being put into a role that doesn't fit you which im sure many people can relate to in different ways. There was definitely a reason it was one of my favourite movies as a kid lol
Fa Zhu knew he would die in war and was fully prepared to go, ensuring his family is honored for his sacrifice. Mulan became the Great Stone Dragon and went in his place. Yao's "I'll get that arrow, Pretty Boy. And I'll do it with my shirt ON~" never fails to make me laugh. XD As much as Shang was a douche to Mulan upon her arrival at the palace, he was looking around like she warned him. So, he definitely believed her- Shan Yu didn't care that Mulan was female. The Huns have female soldiers who fight just as well as the men do, if not better. In Ancient China, if the Emperor, who is the HIGHEST person in command, and damn near considered a god to the people, bows, then you DEFINITELY bow as well.
My favorite movie growing up as a girl and my favorite Disney heroine! Never got into the princesses but I LOVED her. I should make an outfit inspired by her. ( ˶˙ᵕ˙˶ )
38:25 relax, every country in the world was like this at the time. Life was hard for everyone, men and women till late 20th century; life expectancy was really low, people died from so many causes, to live in an invasion free society is a recent luxury I'm grateful for. Back then honoring your family and doing your duty was a matter of life and death, today we can mess up and restart, pressure is less.
@@hebeyuet9314 Well I'm Native American too so that's a big part of it. But similarly to Mulan, they're both different from the typical princess story. Also the animation is beautiful.

@@hebeyuet9314 Yeah, I know a lot of people have an issue with the historical inaccuracies. But I think it's fine to enjoy it for the story itself as long as you know most of it is fictitious. Personally, I don't have an issue with the way the Natives are depicted. Any mentioning of stereotypes is done intentionally to show how they were viewed by the Europeans back then. So it all serves a larger purpose. I definitely recommend watching it sometime. 🙂
I'd cut the dad some slack! He showed more love and care for his daughter than most would during that time.. It broke my heart that he forced himself to say anything hurtful to her at the start of the movie :p
Maybe this is a weird thing, but its actually incredibly moving to see men empathizing so strongly with a woman character. To the point of saying "you do this to me?!". Actually made me tear up. Women have only represented an average of 7% of protagonists in major motion pictures each year for the last 60 years (even less so for women of colour), and the argument that keeps it that way is that "everyone can relate to a male protagonist, but only women can relate to a woman". A way to rationalize straight white men as the default. It's really nice to see clear representations of what bullshit that is (though also frustrating because the box office has proven it bullshit time and again, but the numbers barely shift if at all).
Off topic but why did the brother on the left dress up so fresh just to watch Mulan? 😭 -- The collective laugh for the “fight for England” comment took me out 💀
About military drafts -- in the US, men from 18-25 have to register with the government. If a draft is called for military action, then something called the Selective Service System will randomly pull names from those registered. Right now, the military is all volunteer and the draft is used in emergencies like times of war. As far as I remember, the only reason you can decline being drafted is for being a conscientious objector, but even then you can be posted in non-combat roles like hospital work.
A lesson from Mulan: there are different types of strength. She didn't use brute force, she was very subtle and smart, doing things differently, her own way. She was herself all the time, even when she was pretending to be a man. She didn't try to act like she was the best man ever.
Tbf, out of anyone, Shang had a valid reason to not trust Mulan at the end. She lied to him, he felt betrayed. The emotions of that were prolly too raw for him to think reasonably. Everyone else, yeah, it's jsut cause she's a woman, but for him it was personal.
Yes, but remember his face when she says she did it for saving her father. His expression is like he understood her reasons to do it. I think he pretended to not trust her just for the apearances
Anyone else find it kind of unsettling how the only one who isn't sexist is the villain? He doesn't say man from the mountains, he specifies soldier. Still acknowledging her as a soldier despite the fact that she's in a dress now. He's not holding back at all from trying to kill her or anything
"'The soldier from the mountains.' .... You're a woman!?" Despite how the other males in the movie act, Shan Yu didn't care that Mulan was female. Mongolians were surprisingly some of the most progressive people internally for the time, and had several women that were leaders/warlords. It's why he didn't seem surprised by her gender and still referred to her as "The Soldier." He was just surprised that it was the same person, since he didn't recognize her at first.
the way you guys talking as if if Mulan's father can just casually refuse to be drafted LOL. It either you go and at least die a more glory death or even come back home with reward and title. Or you'll be kill because you refuse and probably you whole family will be kill too.
3:27 Its a metaphor guys 😅 Its like saying “Dog is a Man’s best friend” … House pets are considered family more so when raised from birth, all the animals my family raised and/or adopted were part of our family 100%, they became adoptive siblings and we’re an American family. So, yeah!
It's ancient China, of COURSE misogyny is heavy. If you think that's bad, every household back then couldn't have more than a certain number of children.

Conscription is actually fairly common in the World. I know Denmark's had conscription for forever, though it's highly debated if it should continue. Denmark is not even at war and before Russia's attack on Ukraine, no one thought war was even a real threat since the Cold War and Soviet's disbanding. Currently, it is used as a way to have a reserve army... like... _if_ war broke out, there would be a large amount of men with the necessary training to step up. Women are not conscribed but that is a more... complicated topic.

45:23 Fun fact: Shan Yu wasn’t surprised that Mulan was a woman because Historically, the Huns were very inclusive and had women in their armies.
Actually Shan Yu is the only character in the entire movie who doesn't question the fact that Mulan is a woman or that she was able to do what she did. He simply recognized her as "the solider of the mountain" the Huns as a culture had way more respect and rights for their women. Many of them where warriors.
Very true indeed.
This is true
that is a historical fact
Facts
Mulan is one of my favorite princesses and one of the few that wields a sword and can fight. And her sidekick animals are epic.
Mulan has a horse because her family could afford it. Horses are expensive now and back then. Also I think the horse may have been her father’s old war horse.
"Imagine King Charles telling us to fight for England" and then all three bursting out laughing is the biggest mood I have ever seen!
I love these three!
I know it's a cartoon...but what was that arrow made of to hold the weight of two people and a horse😆
From the look of it I'd say good old fashioned *Plot armor*
Durable stuff
She wasn't a Disney princess but she's my FAVORITE classic heroine to this day! Such a warrior ❤️ also don't know if you guys are taking recommendations but 'my name ' is a really good show ..
She's absolutely a Disney Princess.
When I call my wife or my little girl "my princess", this is the type of "princess" I'm talking about lol
Shan Yu was actually not surprised Mulan was a woman. Women were easily able to join Hun armies because their primary weapon was the bow which relied mostly on skill rather than strength like melee combat. They had plenty of fellow female warriors and some tribal leaders were female.
The tree blooming at the end. Never peeped the connection til yal said it. 😊
Hands down my favourite Disney movie. Nothing else comes close. Great writing, amazing characters, awesome animation, and mind-blowing cinematography. (Did you notice the movie abruptly stopped being a musical when they found the massacred village?)
Also, probably the single most feminist and queer positive Disney movie ever made (Li Shang is an absolute bi icon), and that's including the newer ones.
XD
As much as Shang was a douche to Mulan upon her arrival at the palace, he was looking around like she warned him. So, he definitely believed her-
Shan Yu didn't care that Mulan was female. The Huns have female soldiers who fight just as well as the men do, if not better.
In Ancient China, if the Emperor, who is the HIGHEST person in command, and damn near considered a god to the people, bows, then you DEFINITELY bow as well.
I love how angry they got when the parade was happening and the others were taking credit for mulans work lmao
YEES so glad to see y'all upload!!
5:40 Bro's speaking FACTS forreal 😔👊
My favorite movie growing up as a girl and my favorite Disney heroine! Never got into the princesses but I LOVED her. I should make an outfit inspired by her. ( ˶˙ᵕ˙˶ )
yesss you should thats so cute ♡´・ᴗ・`♡
38:25 relax, every country in the world was like this at the time. Life was hard for everyone, men and women till late 20th century; life expectancy was really low, people died from so many causes, to live in an invasion free society is a recent luxury I'm grateful for. Back then honoring your family and doing your duty was a matter of life and death, today we can mess up and restart, pressure is less.
my guys women getting executed for all kindsa ridiculous reasons has been a cornerstone for many cultures for a long ass time
Been looking forward to this. Mulan was always my 2nd favorite princess after Pocahontas. Love the story, music and humor in this. 💕
just curious why is Pocahontas ur fav
@@hebeyuet9314 Well I'm Native American too so that's a big part of it. But similarly to Mulan, they're both different from the typical princess story. Also the animation is beautiful.
@@katwebbxo That's pretty cool. I personally haven't seen the movie myself but I've seen a lot of criticism online towards the movie's depiction of Native Americans. But I'm glad you like it. Also yeah I gotta agree the animation is stunning from the clips I've seen.
You guys have to see A Goofy Movie. That soundtrack is SOOOOO GOOD. So many great moments in that movie. A childhood favorite for sure.
I probably watched this movie a million times by now one of my all time favs and this reaction hands down is the best I’ve seen
Off topic but why did the brother on the left dress up so fresh just to watch Mulan? 😭
--
The collective laugh for the “fight for England” comment took me out 💀
I love how the hun soldier only says “the soldier from the mountain?” and not “a women” bc huns allowed women to fight in their army
You mean how the leader of the Huns, Shan-Yu said that?
18:15
18:25
28:59
Mushu Is so hilarious when he broke the great stone dragon and a puppet armor😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂.
26:55 I haven't laughed so hard I know that reaction at Yao the way he said that it seems to be Sounded like there lol.
MAN said it's Dora the Explora lol
About military drafts --
in the US, men from 18-25 have to register with the government.
“Jump in the WATER” what water, man 😂
40:17 lmao the frustration 😂 you guys are hilarious
Tbf, out of anyone, Shang had a valid reason to not trust Mulan at the end. She lied to him, he felt betrayed. The emotions of that were prolly too raw for him to think reasonably. Everyone else, yeah, it's jsut cause she's a woman, but for him it was personal.
Yes, but remember his face when she says she did it for saving her father. His expression is like he understood her reasons to do it.
I think he pretended to not trust her just for the apearances
10:22 kiled me, rapha knew what he was doing :D
This movie was BUILT DIFFERENT. Few Disney movies *went there.*
You're a woman!?"
Despite how the other males in the movie act, Shan Yu didn't care that Mulan was female.
Mongolians were surprisingly some of the most progressive people internally for the time, and had several women that were leaders/warlords.
It's why he didn't seem surprised by her gender and still referred to her as "The Soldier." He was just surprised that it was the same person, since he didn't recognize her at first.
10:32 is the most I’ve ever heard homie talk and it was the best singing
Love your reactions!♡ Thank you so much for the video :3
3:30 this scene was our introduction to Mulan's intelligence.
Mulan is from a rich family, that's why she has a horse. It's also why everyone knew about her family (aside from her father also being a war hero)
the way you guys talking as if if Mulan's father can just casually refuse to be drafted LOL. It either you go and at least die a more glory death or even come back home with reward and title. Or you'll be kill because you refuse and probably you whole family will be kill too.
Amazing reaction guys
3:27 Its a metaphor guys 😅 Its like saying “Dog is a Man’s best friend” … House pets are considered family more so when raised from birth, all the animals my family raised and/or adopted were part of our family 100%, they became adoptive siblings and we’re an American family. So, yeah!
You guy should watch brother bear, tarzan(1999), hunchback of notre dawn, pochohantas, lion king2, and the incredibles
Mulan’s confirmed kill count is crazy.
In China yeah our woman as kids are sometimes forced to marry to help “Save” the family
I love how in sync you guys are
I always come back to see Li Shang cause hot damn 🤧❤️
This reaction was so good i loved every minute 💯
10:11 Brother stole the show there 🥶
In ancient China it was a young girl's Duty to be paired up with a young man to get married and have children in order to bring honor to her family.
I’d definitely watch these 3 watch more Disney. I loved this
There's a theory saying if the Stone dragon broke, it was because its spirit aka Mulan, goes away
My only complaint about this film is that they didn't have more songs!
Yeah wish there were more tbh 😀
@@AkinReacts Will u ever make a Patreon I would like to see full reactions to your movies 😭
yall deserve more subscribers!
Mulan is the only Disney Heroine with such an insane kill count! XD
7?! The disrespect 👁️👄👁️
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂, I feel you
I know right
It's ancient China, of COURSE misogyny is heavy. If you think that's bad, every household back then couldn't have more than a certain number of children.
I love your reactions! Your Vary attentive and funny.
I do wish you guys would eventually caption your videos.
This one was better than the second one (Mulan 2) in my opinion.
Have you guys seen Beauty And The Beast yet? That is a true classic and one of my top favorite Disney movies of all time.
39:21-39:27 it’s impossible to survive in the pile of snow ❄️ from avalanche.
Thanks for watching this. I watchted tis so many times at my grandma's haus may she rest in peace 😔🙏. One movie we alsow watched was the old Heidi movie it would mean alott to me if u woud react to it.
Love your reactions and its official tere is a avatar the last air bender cast maybe u can do a reaction on that 2 I'm curious about how u feel about life action avatar (the new one ), the old one was just eberesing. Have a good day folks
Loved this one y'all. Michael still looking cute as ever. :)
Fantastic reaction. Subscribed!
yall should react to Vinland Saga, i'm 100% sure you guys would like it.
Bro yaw should rlly watch surfs up if yaw haven’t seen it already, that’s my all time favorite movie and not a lot of pple react to it
I am just now realizing this and I don’t know if it’s true or not. However, the voice actress who played the grandma sounds like Betty White!
Love this movie and love your guys reaction. 2009 there is a live mu lan movie "
Mulan: Rise of a Warrior (2009) " in china, I also like that version of movie--much better than the live movie of mulan in 2020. The female leader is the actress in shaolin soccer , zhao wei, who acts as mulan and she is a very famous actress from 2000 to 2020.
When you realize Mulan’s fake boy name is “Fa Ping”. Disney was wild back then.
If a man of superior stature than yourself, ever bowed before someone- you had to bow even lower to show your respect!
I am telling yall, react to Surfs Up, its such a good movie
As a Dutch speaker… gebakken batterij took me OUT 😭💀
this is the most current year title I have ever seen
I mean it’s the truth😂😂
1 down and 1 to go
