I don't think you noticed, but Hiccup probably lost his foot when Toothless saved him. In that scene where Hiccup was falling and Toothless was trying to reach him to save him, Hiccup was falling head first and Toothless was diving head first. In those positions, the most likely way Toothless could have reached Hiccup is by catching a foot in his mouth. So, Toothless lost a tail fin to Hiccup and Hiccup lost a foot to Toothless. Kind of poetic justice, I think.

I think that in the second one Hiccup told his mom that was the fire the reason for lost his foot. He didn't say it that way but he kinda mean that.

    • @psychokitty71

@@jacquelinemartinez8653 The way he phrased it was very ambiguous. I looked it up. He said that Toothless had to make it even and he couldn't save all of him. That's why I pointed out the positions they were in as Hiccup fell. He fell head first. If it was due to the fire, then he should have been killed falling like that. His feet were the last part of his body to enter the flames.

@@psychokitty71 but doesn’t Toothless have retractable teeth? He probably would have gummed Hiccup instead of chomping him, which would more likely lead to bruising/breakage as opposed to loosing the foot entirely.

    • @psychokitty71
      @psychokitty71 Год назад +104

@@elainaveasey5831 Unlike my initial comment there's not really any evidence to support this, but I think he would have used his teeth, almost instinctively. He was literally trying to save Hiccup's life. Not using teeth, he runs the risk of losing his grip on him. Better to lose a foot than be killed. Not to mention, losing a limb is kind of an occupational hazard in their world. A lot of their tribe seem to be missing a hand or foot.

    • @michelle1794
      @michelle1794 Год назад +66

@@psychokitty71 yeah Toothless definitely had to grab him by the leg with his mouth so he ended up either cutting it pretty badly so they had to amputate or directly ripping it out himself because of the force of his jaw. It would be pretty weird that the fire only got to just one leg given that both were in contact with the fire.

That line when Stoick says that Hiccup isn't his son is devastating with them. Many Norse names are along the lines of Erikson, or Anderson, or Peterson. And it , literally, means son of Erik, Ander or Peter. So saying that means he cannot claim his Father's lineage, which was VERY important.
Also, I imaging that when Stoick is kneeling over Toothless and Hiccup, on the ground, I imagined there being, just off camera, a whole horde of Valkyries waiting, ready to fight over which one got to take Hiccup off to Valhalla. His qualifications would have been immense. Was willing to defy his Father and whole village for what he knew was right, First to take down a Night Fury, first to train and befriended it, first to ride a dragon, created a whole profession of dragon riders, among his people, Led an assault on the queen dragon and with Toothless, killed it. Something his entire tribe would have been unable to do. A lot of Viking in a small package.

Non-spoiler answers to your questions/comments made in the video:
    - They don't really say how often the dragon attacks occur, but I don't believe it was EVERY night. Certainly regularly enough for them to survive (they likely had other Viking settlements on other islands that they raided too), and regularly enough that the Vikings felt it necessary to create ways to fend them off.
    - "He sounds like he's from Massachusetts." Canada, actually XD It's unclear why the kids have American/Canadian accents as opposed to the Scottish accents of the adults; the cast joked once that maybe Hiccup and the others went to boarding school in the States for a year or two haha.
    - Hiccup never actually said he killed a Night Fury, he said he shot it down. "It went down just off Raven Point. Let's get a search party out there, before it-" (presumably, his sentence would have ended with something like "before it gets away").
    - Yep, Fishlegs is McLovin (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), Snotlout is Jonah Hill, Hiccup is Jay Baruchel, and Tuffnut is TJ Miller. That group of actors have worked together in different formations in plenty of projects over the years.
    - Yep, Toothless lost his tail-fin when Hiccup downed him, which is why he now has issues flying.
    - It's rather . . . abstract, but Toothless actually drew Hiccup lol. When the finished product is shown (17:37), his mouth is making an "O" at the bottom-left, then diagonally to the right we have a swoop for his nose, a couple of circles for his eyes, and the rest of the swirls around it is his hair :)
    - Idk if you guys plan on ever watching the tv series (it's not necessary, but I'd recommend it, even in your own time), so I won't say what it is just in case, but I will say there is a very good reason dragons don't like eels.
    - I'd say Toothless rolling around in the grass was more of a cat thing than a dog thing, purely because that type of grass is like catnip to them (as you see just afterwards). They literally call it Dragon Nip haha.
    - Nah, Hiccup and Astrid aren't together yet, they just bonded over the experience Toothless gave them.
    - Not saying I agree with Stoick's attitude, but you have to understand his POV. He's not only a father, but he's also a chief, and the thoughts of whether he should prioritise his son or the tribe in different situations conflict with each other. He is also fearful for his son's wellbeing (like he is throughout the whole movie), and because of his fear over his son being killed due to his association with dragons, he lashes out and says something he doesn't mean. He immediately regrets it after leaving the hall (you can see his knees buckle/he stumbles slightly). He has a good reason for being so resistant to the idea of being friends with dragons, which is explored in the second movie, so I won't go into it further here.
    - It's unclear how exactly Hiccup lost his leg, but the most common theories I've seen are a) it was crushed when he and Toothless hit the queen's tail (sidenote: the queen dragon is known as the Red Death), b) it was crushed/broken beyond repair when he and Toothless landed on the ground, or c) when Toothless was trying to protect him, he had to bite his leg to get him closer so he could wrap himself around him.

In reference to why the adults had Scottish accents and the kids had American/Canadian accents was answered in an interview with either Craig or Gerard (I can't remember which). The Scottish is supposed to represent the "old country" with their old school ways and the American/Canadian is to represent the "new country" with its modern ideas.

little music theory lesson here: in the scene where Toothless and Hiccup are flying for the final product of the saddle and tail fin, the music actually also tells a story. in the beginning it plays Toothless’s theme and Hiccup’s theme back and forth based on who is in control. It sounds messy and uncoordinated, because it IS because they haven’t learned to work together yet. THEN when they finally start working together, a new theme comes in (that’s a combo of both of their theme’s) and that’s the song y’all were singing. It sounds a lot more majestic and amazing because they finally learned how to work together as a team. A VERY cool way to use music score in movies.

The first time I saw the movie I didn't really like the relationship with Astrid or her character so I can understand your opinions
But the truth is that rewatching the movie over the years I've grown to appreciate the character more and more until she became my favorite.
Maybe the "romantic" interest felt a bit rushed but Astrid is definitely an amazing character. She is the perfect representation of a respectable Viking and not just the image of a foolish risk-taking Viking, and I think it was important for Hiccup to have such a presence in his life. someone brave, intelligent, who knows what they wants and fights for it.
And it's certainly not that her relationship with Hiccup is fully cemented right there in the first film, in the series they show more of his development
But for a movie that we didn't know if it would have a sequel I think they did a good job of introducing the characters and their relationship with each other's

I think the reason hiccup loses his foot. When toothless goes to catch hiccup as he is falling, toothless bites him as if you remember toothless teeth retracts when he is trying to grab something quickly. I think that it's a symbolism as hiccup also did shot toothless tail in the beginning. Like you said they will need each other, they are kindred.

I believe hiccup’s foot was caught in the harness and when he got knocked off toothless the force just ripped his foot off

I’m developing a twitch after years of reactors saying ‘Toothless is so clumsy’ ‘Why is he so bad at flying lol?’ after Hiccup ripped off half the poor dragon’s tail 😂 No disrespect to you guys, it’s just wild to me that so many people watch this movie and say that at the start/sometimes for the whole film?!

I really loove this movie and I also recommend you to watch ,,Race To The Edge". Basically, it's a series based on ,,How To Train Your Dragon" but there's a lot of new dragons which actually were shown in the Dragon Book in the first Httyd movie ( discovering and learning more abt dragons was actually the whole point of this series ). Oh, and i also forget to say that dragon crew ( Hiccup, Astrid, Ruffnut etc. ) are teenagers ( they're actually lookin' really good ) there because this show was made after first and before second movie but it doesn't really matter and have no affect on the movie though. There are also some new characters that are not included in movie too but i think you may love them. Hope to see Race To The Edge on your channel! It would be awesome! 🐉

    fun fact! :
toothless in the first movie didn't you realize that everyone who made toothless upset or hiccup upset toothless wouldn't let them go until they apologize
    for an example
when Astrid first meet toothless, toothless wouldn't stop going fast until she apologized
and for stoik he apologized to hiccup then toothless Finnally shown hiccup was ok

I quite like Stoick's character, actually. He's stubborn, but once he does realises his mistakes he is willing to admit and work to amend for them, and under high stress he is calm and remains rational and retains foresight. An amazing leader, but, yeah, stubborn.
