A note of something that no one seems to know, when Toothless was drawing, he actually did draw Hiccup decently. You just have to turn your head so that your chin faces the upper-left of the screen. It's mostly a single continuous line, but it's clearly his head shape.
Watching people see that scene when the "Forbidden Friendship" piece of the soundtrack is playing and Toothless and Hiccup are first making friends is just incredibly wholesome. I will love this movie forever
The music in that scene really is something else 😭 the soft toned score they use is honestly just a lullaby, soft and calming. 😭 I could go on for hours about the music alone in those movies.
Fun fact. I had never seen this movie before and a friend played that song for an impromptu piano performance. I was tearing up and I knew I had to see the movie if the music was that good. Several months and about twenty watches later, the first and second movies are my two favorite movies ever and the third isn't too far behind.
This movie is the definition of the word "masterpiece". Everything about it works perfectly. The conflict between Hiccup and Stoick is handled very well, the bonding between Hiccup and Toothless is perfectly paced, I love how much Toothless acts like a cat, and how all the dragons act like real animals, and the musical score and flying scenes are absolutely beautiful. I cannot give this movie enough praise.
I love how they made it easy to tell that it was the hammer hitting the metal of the arena that set the dragon off not because it wanted to attack, but because it was scared of the loud noise.
Can't wait for the reaction! Can't wait to cry along with you once again, not only because of the movie, but any time Greg cries, I tend to cry as well.
Hiccup realizing he lost a leg is such a moment of shock without a single word, for both him and me cause damn that level of consequences in an animated movie is crazy
The reason why the flight song gives chills is because it is composed of 2 melodies. One is for hiccup that you hear in the beginning of the movie and the other is Toothless's ominous soundtrack that's from the beginning where he snipes the catapults. So when they fly together, both tunes overlap into a melody which is why it's both, sounds familiar and gives chills.❤ And I love the power move they did with Stoick as he says "you're not my son" and then stumbles outside to catch his breath, realizing what he just said / did with that, showing that he has to be both, a dad and a chief and to do what's right for the entirety of the clan. That move was the reason Stoick wasn't a villain and it's so powerful.
When Hiccup drops the cheat-sheet and just relies on instinct while learning to fly together, that piece of music is unforgetable for me. Thats beauty and perfection to my ears.
It’s actually impossible for me to watch any of the three movies without crying tears of joy or sadness. And I can’t get over how phenomenal the score for this movie is, John Powell is SUCH an underrated composer. The tracks from when Hiccup takes his first flight make you feel like you’re flying as well
When you listen to “test flight” you hear their two theme songs clashing and then culminating into this trumpet fanfare that is so chilling their themes combine and makes it so much better
The 3D effects on this movie were - ridiculously - good. The shots on Toothless gave you actual vertigo, and the ash falling at the end of the final battle looked like it was drifting into the seats in front of you. Absolutely amazing when paired with a beautiful story.
I seriously can not wait for you two to do number 2 and 3 !!! Please don’t leave it too long as one of the films answers a comment Greg made in this film 🎉
The score during the "Now or never" scene with him going through the Rocks is called Test Drive, i was lucky enough to see it performed live and it's just another thing entirely to hear the instruments play it live.
I love Greg going from "I remember it was kinda cute" to "it really is the second coming of Christ" and nearly crying at the end 😂 Love the reaction, you two. Can't wait to see you react to the next two movies. The whole trilogy is great.

Toothless bit off Hiccup’s foot trying to grab him during the fall. Hiccup refers to this as Toothless getting him back since he tore off Toothless’s tail fin in the first place.
The score alone makes this movie one of my top 5 animated movies ever. The story is heartwarming and the visually are captivating. The flying scenes feel real and full of motion. Toothless is the best and Hiccup (and the village) have a great arch because they don’t start off bad as people they just had tradition and reasonable fear. This came out when I was an older kid but it still holds nostalgia whenever I hear or see it!
This movie is such a masterclass in subtle animations. You don’t even notice it most of the time, but there’s so many little tics and motions that were added in that sell these shots as “real” rather than animation. That tiny little hesitation when toothless goes in to touch Hiccup’s hand, subtle eye motions when the characters are talking to each other, the way Stoic subtly shrugs his shoulders when he frightens off the monstrous nightmare, etc. They’re all things that we completely take for granted as the mark of a great actor, and they you realize that everything is rendered frame by frame and animated by hand. The more you watch it, the more you notice, and the newer sequels stepped up the technology and are arguably some of the best acting in animation you will ever see. Where Pixar is excellent at caricature and selling the broad strokes that make a human a human in such a way that we believe it to be real, Dreamworks at it’s peak is excellent at the subtle nuance that achieves the same thing.

Loved this reaction! Hope you guys end up reacting to the rest of the trilogy. Also, Greg, good call that the dialogue seemed to be in the same room. There's a really cool making of video for this movie that's about 30mins long that you can find on youtube, where they explain that because they knew they'd have overlap between when the voice actors could come record, they purposefully wrote dialogue that had to be recorded simultaneously. A neat detail!
It truly is the perfect movie. That moment if Stoic's realization after disowning Hiccup, as if to say he's set back by his own action, cannot believe what he said, that moment of self doubt. It truly touches me I cry every time. This movie also has a really high rewatchabily level. I also love when movies thrust you from the beginning seconds of a movie into a situation. A movie that comes to my mind is Maze Runner, cause you watched it lately. Itftom the first second everything around is super loud and surprising and you try to keep up. I think this movie's opening scene is so cinematic and engaging and beautifully done.
This movie is a classic. And is guaranteed to bring tears of joy to my eyes every time. And the crazy thing is each movie is just a good as the previous, they could do no wrong.
I saw it in the cinema when it came out. It was one of the few movies that was great in 2D, but blew my mind seeing it in 3D. It felt like really riding the dragons. And the feeling of sizes and dimensions was simply stunning. This and the sound track will be imprinted in my mind for my whole life. Thanks for a great, wonderful reaction video by two great and wonderful cat people 🐱
Masterpiece. Watching the HTTYD movies with my son when he was growing up was just an amazing experience. My son is a teenager now, so he’s off doing his own things with friends, but I’ll honestly look back on this series when I’m even older with the happiest of memories. The visuals, the heart, the soundtrack. Its a perfect movie and a perfect trilogy in my opinion. Ps: Universals new theme park in Florida is going to have a HTTYD section!
This movie hit theaters 3 months after Avatar, I saw it in 3D... and it was a far superior experience, the flight sequence with Astrid was breathtaking and Stoic's beard felt so real, like you can really touch that texture. To this day, the ending is still so groundbreaking, it's a good ending but with a real sacrifice, I can't imagine how people in the same position felt to watch a character just like them. Later I found out how the movie in a way works as coming out tale, again, tons of people finding themselves in this magical movie. Tara's face during the video was a gift, this is indeed, CINEMA.
Definitely one of the greatest trilogies ever made! I showed my older brother the first movie on DVD and he loved it. We went to see the second and third in theater. It was packed with other adults without kids. 😂😂
As a grown man who is 47 years old, this is one of my favorite movies of all time. The music is insane. And the themes choke me up every time. The sequels are tremendous as well.
Im still crying at the reveal of hiccups lost leg after 10 years, dozens of watches and absolute tons of reactions. This film is done so good 😭 "This movie also has amazing music" just wait until the sequels, especially the second one. I think the second one has the best music and the third one has the worst but theyre all amazing
Grew up w these movies & personally really love them so much more than other "children's movies" because they go so much deeper & actually touch so many important topics. You can literally still watch them, doesn't matter the age. Loved the reaction, hyped for the next ones!!
The whole trilogy is great! This movie has one of the best from start to finish musical scores of all time for me. So much emotion felt by only hearing the music. I always get goosebumps watching this movie multiple times from the music alone. Added edit: Greg said the thing at 15:34! Added edit 2: Greg got the chills! 22:46 same!
Omg omg omg. I Love this series, everything about it is amazing. The story, the characters, and the music. You gotta cry everytime you hear the theme song. I cant wait for you to see the other movies.
I love these trilogy so much. The movie really got my heart. Toothless is so adorable and the character arc are so heartwarming. Glad you guys are reacting to it.
I love Hiccup because he's such a rare male main character. He defeats the traditional hypermasculine norms of being a Viking by being not just intelligent, but becoming a full-on _Engineer._ We've never seen a Viking Engineer!! He's a scientist and a natural leader, who leads through compassion and respect over fear and posturing. Also, great point about becoming a dragon rider completely by accident - he's not some "chosen one" or even trying to figure out how to ride one. He was just trying to help an animal that he'd wronged. ❤️ This movie is so freaking great :)
Fun fact: One of the movie's director was Chris Sanders, director of Lilo & Stitch. And you can definitely see Toothless's design adapts similarities to Stitch's. I guess Sanders knows a way to make aliens and dragons look so frickin cute.
This is my favourite franchise ever! I became obsessed with it after the first film. I watched the tv show of it (Riders of Berk), then the second show (Defenders of Berk) and became even more obsessed. Then the second film, third show (Race to rhe Edge) and third film just absolutely cemented it as one of my favourite things ever. For my birthday one year my sister drew me a picture with all my favourite things/characters in it and front and centre were Hiccup and Toothless!!!
The music in these movies does go hard. It's like they told the composer "Yeah, it's a silly movie about dragons you don't need to make your Magnum Opus," but he only heard the Magnum Opus part and just replied with "Okay :)"
This is one of my favorite movies watched this one in theaters when I was younger and fell in love with it so much and still watch it alot now have em all on Blu-Ray's
I watched this in the theaters and Hiccup losing his leg BLEW MY MIND. Main characters in animated movies usual have a forcefield around them, no physical change or even a broken bone by the end. I will recommend this movie to anyone.
i can still remember seeing this in theaters as a kid, and to this day it was one of if not the best movie ive ever seen on the big screen. it has almost nothing to do with the book series i so deeply adore, but i hardly care a bit. it's just THAT good
I personally think the second one is better and the third is on par with the first. In the second one they really amplify everything that made the first one special. It’s an amazing story overall.
Small curiosity/thing to be noticed, by the way the toothless was going towards Hicup, it is quite likely that the responsible for the lost leg was the toothless himself not the flames, having pulled hicup with his mouth, and considering the situation, not having time to control the he own force
They really nailed the animations in this movie from the hesitation putting his head in Hiccups hand which was an accident that got left in because it suited the scene better all the way to when toothless opens his wings while hiccup is on his tail and you can see the wing tips dragging across the ground is just amazing to me😅
I remember watching the 2 movies in theaters but wasn’t into the first that much till later on it grown on me. Then the those tv series came it and that was most of childhood right there.
This movie was my childhood! Fun fact, when Toothless hesitates to touch Hiccups hand. It was actually a glitch but they decided that it looked goo so they kept it in. Also, you guys should definitely check out Dragon Heart if you enjoyed this movie! It's an underrated film with a great story behind it.😊
_Why_ do people keep getting that wrong? The hesitation was the animator's personal choice. The _eye opening_ when Hiccup first finds him downed in the woods was the glitch that looked so cool they decided to leave it in.
The main theme always gets me. There's been a couple of really cool breakdowns, but the general idea is this. During their first big flight scene, the track "Test Flight". Hiccup is in control. Kinda flubbing it, they bounce off a couple columns. He's very in his head, trying to control every aspect, and figure out the tail. It's Hiccup's Theme playing. Then he pulls an Icarus, and falls. Panic, and discord and clashing in the theme. Hiccup and Toothless relink, and Toothless takes over, snapping out his wings to brake. Toothless' Theme takes over. Then Hiccup loses his cheat sheet, and throws caution to the wind, trusting in Toothless, and Toothless trusting in Hiccup. And then the Main Theme blares. A blending of their Themes, big rising inspiring fanfare of a piece. Gets me every time.
This might be the best animated movie ever made. The soundtrack, animation, even the voice acting were incredible. Kinda sad that we might not get another animated masterpiece like this
Just Continue watching this incredible trilogie, one cannot help but be astounded by the abundance of adorable and profound moments that never fail to impress me each time !
I completely underestimated this movie before I saw it, too. I was so amazed and appreciated how easily I was proven wrong. The visuals, the music and the story is perfect. Best scenes (imo) are: 1) the opening-it sets up everything so succinctly, even with the musical themes. 2) Toothless and Hiccup’s first pet, with how the develop the trust between the two, which is completely necessary to earn the awe of- 3) Test Ride and badass flying abilities. And yes, the sequels are just as strong. Gotta keep on this series!
This is the beginning to the most perfect trilogy ever made. The second one is better then the first, and I cried like a baby when the third movie ended. Be ready for the best ride of your life.
This is a rare of great, greater, greatest string of movies!! I don't know how they did it, but this one of the great trilogy! And the fact that Roger Deakin's consulted on lighting tickles me to no-end!
Easily my in my top 3 of animated trilogies!!! ❤ Look forward to seeing all three reactions, guys! 😊 Edit: Omg, Tara falling in love with toothless is just adorable!😅 ❤❤❤ Savour the cuteness overload! 😂
@somerando999 5th one will be out next year or 2025. I feel the more comes out the less it hits the same. Will have to rewatch 4 to remember it more, but to each their own.
I'm pretty sure one of the animators based toothless off his cat. Also, I think I read that people had a test audience to see if Hiccup losing his leg wasn't too extreme of an ending and the audience loved it so they kept it. And the soundtrack is just phenomenal.
No matter how many times I see this movie its only getting better and better, its soooo good. The entire scene of forbidden friendship is espacialy one of the best scenes in my book ever, and the first flight has such a great camera work that when I was a kid watching it in cinema I was just holding my breath the entire time. It felt like these 7d or how many "D"s there are in those attractions, where you have special moving seats, but it was acomplished without all these fancy staff. Simply amazing. Also I remember how some moments scared me, I jumped in my seat a bunch of times XD All an all it really made an impression on my 7 yo mind, and till this day it is one of my favorite movies. Also the soundtrack for all the parts of this trilogy. Many song and other tracks from different games and movies coming and going in my playlists, but certain tracks from this trilogy I still listen to, and not planning to stop any time soon
43:12 it IS the second coming of Christ, this movie made my young adult years, I love all the themes in here, and the other movies expound on the lore SO much, pleaseee continue the trilogy 🙏🏼 I’m glad you loved it
38:59 Right?? This is the kind of moment that creates legends. Viking children probably grew up with bed time stories of how Hiccup and his Night Fury battled an enormous dragon in the heavens.
I still can’t believe it that we get a LIFE ACTION of how to train ur dragon in a year or more… I just hope they get a fraction of this masterpiece right with it … if so, I will cry for 6 hours straight and if they destroy my frenchise I will cry for 4 hours
The amazing voice acting you were talking about is exactly what you think it is. They all were together in the same room which makes the interaction between them incredible

One slight correction, Toothless’ theme isn’t heard at all until the scene in the forest when Hiccup first discovers Toothless tied up in his launcher

HTTYD came out in 2010, not 2003! Also, I hope you react to the second and third movies! This is my favorite franchise of all time!
Yup, and the one that came out in 2003 was the book of HTTYD
Definitely one of the greatest trilogies ever made! I showed my older brother the first movie on DVD and he loved it. We went to see the second and third in theater. It was packed with other adults without kids. 😂😂
As a grown man who is 47 years old, this is one of my favorite movies of all time. The music is insane. And the themes choke me up every time. The sequels are tremendous as well.
Yayyyy I can’t wait to watch them react to my fav animated trilogy 🎉🎉🎉
This was my favorite movie growing up and it’s still my favorite trilogy. I’m happy to see you guys watching it!
A year with my first cat makes me see the cat within Toothless much more clearly.
Im still crying at the reveal of hiccups lost leg after 10 years, dozens of watches and absolute tons of reactions. This film is done so good 😭
"This movie also has amazing music" just wait until the sequels, especially the second one.
They did in fact animate around the voice actors. Hiccup in particular draws his mannerisms from the actor
I will ALWAYS love the magical moment of hiccup and toothless touching for the first time. The break of the endless years of battle.
I Love the "WTF" when Stoic sees the dragons flying in to save the day.
"I'm sorry" is the magic phrase with toothless. ❤
Can't wait for your react on parts 2 and 3. Love seeing you watch this. Thanks guys! 💜💜💜
Best animated trilogy! I adore these movies🙌 Especially the score by John Powell!
Your reaction was adorable, I knew you’d both love it, it’s why I clicked instantly!! Such a masterpiece, can’t wait for the next two!!!
Genuinely my favourite kids movie, so much heart, so much detail, so much thought and the SCORE IS UNBELIEVABLE
One of the best movie trilogies I've ever seen. So glad y'all are watching this!
0:36 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 SO TRUE!
i can still remember seeing this in theaters as a kid, and to this day it was one of if not the best movie ive ever seen on the big screen. it has almost nothing to do with the book series i so deeply adore, but i hardly care a bit. it's just THAT good
I personally think the second one is better and the third is on par with the first. In the second one they really amplify everything that made the first one special. It’s an amazing story overall.
38:13 One of the greatest pieces of cinematography I've seen in a movie, animated or not.
Small curiosity/thing to be noticed, by the way the toothless was going towards Hicup, it is quite likely that the responsible for the lost leg was the toothless himself not the flames, having pulled hicup with his mouth, and considering the situation, not having time to control the he own force
aw love that you're doing these movies. this first one is one of my all time favs
One of, if not the GREATEST music score of all time. That’s my opinion don’t come at me. But honestly it’s such perfect thematic writing.
Love gettin up for class and seeing the reel rejects watching one of my favorite movies of all time. Keep up the amazing work Reel Rejects!!
Watching these movies with you two is like watching it again with my kids. Love it.
Hiccup and Astrid's relationship along with the incredible animation with human mannerisms is what made me love this film. Astrid is pure wifu
Damn. They missed Stoke's stumble as his face broke into sorrow for what he had to say to his little boy.
People still say the word wifu?💀
Kinda sad that we might not get another animated masterpiece like this
AGREE just what i wanted to say
Just Continue watching this incredible trilogie, one cannot help but be astounded by the abundance of adorable and profound moments that never fail to impress me each time !
These movies are SO good. Especially the soundtracks. Hope you enjoy them all!
I saw this when it first came out in 3D....the flying scenes were absolutely amazing!
Easily one of my favorite movies. So excited you guys are watching this.
17:25 the synchronized hand movement was so cute
Please react to the second and third one this is a really solid trilogy!
I completely underestimated this movie before I saw it, too. I was so amazed and appreciated how easily I was proven wrong. The visuals, the music and the story is perfect.
Best scenes (imo) are:
1) the opening-it sets up everything so succinctly, even with the musical themes.
2) Toothless and Hiccup’s first pet, with how the develop the trust between the two, which is completely necessary to earn the awe of-
3) Test Ride and badass flying abilities.
And yes, the sequels are just as strong. Gotta keep on this series!
This is the beginning to the most perfect trilogy ever made. The second one is better then the first, and I cried like a baby when the third movie ended. Be ready for the best ride of your life.
I’m so hyped for you two to watch this series its one of my favorites
I know Pixar films are peoples fav , but How to train your dragon series is one of my all time favs , this is my fav animation score give Goosebumps
I ALWAYS cry with this movies! You're in for a ride!
John Powell went to unbelievably hard with his Score and it just gets better as the trilogy goes in
this movie is soooooo perfect, i tear up everytime i watch it!! so glad y’all loved it
I hope you realize that you’ve just started one of the greatest trilogies ever
This is a rare of great, greater, greatest string of movies!! I don't know how they did it, but this one of the great trilogy! And the fact that Roger Deakin's consulted on lighting tickles me to no-end!
He also gave them limitations of Camera and Lenses that exist in the world after seeing animators making up focal lengths and camera moves.
Easily my in my top 3 of animated trilogies!!! ❤
Look forward to seeing all three reactions, guys! 😊
Edit: Omg, Tara falling in love with toothless is just adorable!😅 ❤❤❤
Savour the cuteness overload! 😂
what are the others trilogy?
@@aonedit630 HTTYD is at number 1, then Kung fu panda, and shrek (I don't acknowledge 4 and 5 lol)
@@vivacious_me there isn't a five. And also four is better than three
@somerando999 5th one will be out next year or 2025. I feel the more comes out the less it hits the same.
Will have to rewatch 4 to remember it more, but to each their own.
The relationship between Hiccup and Astrid is such a great romance as they develop over the three films.
She is strong, supportive, and feminine.
This movie is so great, Hiccup and Toothless is a awesome and great duo! 👍
"Becomes like his dad"
*Tears up at HTTYD 2*
Also I remember how some moments scared me, I jumped in my seat a bunch of times XD
All an all it really made an impression on my 7 yo mind, and till this day it is one of my favorite movies.
