One could make the argument that Stoick was so reluctant to accept Hiccup's relation with Toothless in the first film because he had PTSD attacks to Drago and was worried that Hiccup would turn out like him.
He also saw first hand that his wife fought for dragon/human coexistence and it ended in her death and nearly the death of Hiccup. Like he knows it failed, which is why he’s so adamant in the first film that the only way is to kill dragons. And when Hiccup changed his world view, a part of him hoped that his wife was alive somewhere since they were both right, which is why he was so grateful when he laid eyes on her again.
My favorite thing about these movies is that they do the thing that animation rarely seems to do, at least not as well. There's growth and aging the likes of which you rarely see animated. Love both the danish version and Ashley Eckstein’s Ahsoka equally though.
I also like that they removed the makeup from Astrid’s design, along with the rest of the women. That’s also something you rarely see in animation. Women are often just automatically designed with eyeliner, eyeshadow, etc. No matter the culture or time period they’re portraying.
The line that Stoick says to Drago "it'll take more than a little fire to kill me" is so deep in multiple ways... albeit it was a full blast from a Night Fury but ultimately a fireball was his end 😭 however, even though his body was traditionally set ablaze "itll take more than a little fire to kill" Stoick's honour and memory
I love how this movie keeps on building Hiccup‘s and Toothless‘ friendship. To me, this trilogy, in its core, will always be about the beauty of friendship.
I was holding it together pretty well, and then Greg had me crumbling, lol 🥺😢 I’m actually glad that they were unsuccessful in changing Drago’s mind, because it’s a lesson of the real world. Obviously, trying to have peaceful communications is always preferred and should be the first step, but there are some people that just cannot be reasoned with no matter what. I felt this showed the contrast of people who are willing to accept and choose change like Stoic and the ones who aren’t, and sometimes, that’s just how life is. I can’t wait for y’all to watch the 3rd. ❤
I completely broke when Toothless was nuzzling Stoic's hand. I don't know whether it's because it's been a while since I've had a good cry, it's been a while since I've seen this film, Greg's reaction, or something else, but I suddenly started crying harder than I think I've ever cried from this film, even when I first saw it in the cinema. I rarely cry from films and games, but when I do cry, I cry hard.
When stoick first reunited with valka is just so moving for anyone who has lost their other. “You’re as beautiful as the day I lost you”. To see them again is something we all wish for.
Killing off Stoic without even a farewell is probably what hurts me the most. There was no "I' proud of you my son" or anything like that. He just got shot by Toothless and die in an instant. It's very realistic and heartbreaking.
Just like the first movie, this one just does so many things right. Hiccup and Astrid's relationship is adorable, Valka is a great character and addition to the cast, Drago is such an unstoppable force of a villain, Eret's redemption feels earned, Stoick's death was extremely emotional and impactful, (it still makes me cry,) the climax is just plain perfect, and as always, the animation and musical score are fantastic. A pretty damn great movie and an amazing sequel.
All 3 of these movies are absolutely incredible. Some of the most emotional and moving animated films ever. There are so many mature themes that are handled so well. It's absolutely fantastic, and beautiful animation on top of things. I actually cried the hardest watching 3, but 2 was super close.
I think a big message here is also that Hiccup didn't listen either. He had both parents telling him that Drago couldn't be reasoned with. He had ships full of Drago's men who were terrified of him, and Hiccup still thought he could be diplomatic. Drago, obviously, from the start, could not be connected to or reasoned with.
Very true. There's a great line from the Thor movies that truly defines this statement: "A wise king never seeks out war, but must always be ready for it"
Idk how they did it, but they somehow managed to make the score EVEN BETTER. The thrill you feel from the music alone is enough to make you feel as if you're soaring through the clouds.
When someone asks "why is this your favorite trilogy?", the answer is simply "just watch it, you'll understand". It's been years already, and HTTYD movies still are my favorite of all time, they still make me cry every single time i watch them. I just love this franchise, and Toothless is everything. Also, THE MUSIC. HOW CAN THIS MUSIC BE SO GREAT? Man, when you least expect it, you're already like this: taananaananaaaan tanananananaaan tanananaan nanananaaan nanananarananranaan turururururururuuuu (sorry i just woke up)
This movie is impossible to watch without getting emotional. The scene of Hiccups mom and dad reuniting NEVER FAILS to make me cry! And the song “Where no one goes” is impossible to listen to without getting chills. You can just close your eyes while listening to it and feel like you and Toothless are flying through the clouds.
These movies aged with me perfectly I watched them all in theatres, the first as a kid, the second as a teen, and the third as a young adult. This trilogy is so good and this one is definitly in my opinion the best of the 3. It’s one of those stories that just feels important.
I consider this Dreamworks’ perfect trilogy. Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar and Shrek (not a trilogy) each had their flaws, mainly in their third instalments. But HTTYD was consistently gripping and emotional in every movie. All it really comes down to is which one is the most memorable. I’d say the first is still my absolute favourite after all these years, but two and three still hold up and are some of my favourite animated films ever made
I think I've cried as many tears as possible for this movie, I've seen it so many times, but Greg's reaction BROKE me. The third one still gets me, so between it and Greg's probable reaction to it, I'm anticipating using up half a box of tissues.
I'd recommend you watch the TV series too. It's not necessary to see before the movies, but they added some world building and really showed their growth in between the first two movies.
Series was really good I put it on for my nephew and watched the occasional episode with him but it's definitely worth a watch for sure I think he actually came up with the flame sword in that series too
@@kaijukyru I like to think Hiccup’s Inferno/Fire Sword in this movie is inspired by Viggo’s own improved Fire Sword , which had that unique capability of releasing Zippleback gas.
Big detail that I missed and saw someone point out on other reactions: Stoick's death is foreshadowed in the firat movie. Toothless moves to blast him in the Kill Ring thinking to protect Hiccup and Hiccup calls him off. The writing and continuity in this trilogy is superbly done. A Masterclass in storyline, character development, music, and animation 👌
I love the symmetry of the battle scene when the 2 alphas are fighting, Drogo and Stoic are fighting; and when the white alpha falls Stoic falls to Drogo. It’s even sadder and ironic when he said pre-fight, “It takes more than a little fire to kill me.” And just like the end of the 1st movie where Hiccup and Toothless lose body parts on the same side, Drogo and his alpha have missing parts on the same side (his arm and tusk)
i bawled like a bairn to this movie when i first saw it, and still shed a few tears to this day when i rewatch it. the How To Train Your Dragon movies are easily the best Animated Trilogy in existence.
I love this movie so much man. It’s my personal favorite HTTYD movie. In my opinion it significantly improves on everything they did in the first one. One the best animated movies I’ve watched. Hiccup is a fantastic protagonist. Can’t wait to see y’all’s reaction to the 3rd one.
I just remembered why this hit my emotions like a truck the first time I watched it, it came out the year my mom died. Hiccup's reunion with his own mother destroyed me along with everything else that happened in this movie!
Thank you for the emotional rollercoaster guys!!! I remember seeing this for the first time and I both smiled and cried. One of my top movies of all time!
I remember seeing the first one when I was younger. By the time I was sat in theaters watching this one, a lot had happened in my life. I feel like this movie did a FANTASTIC job at maturing with it's audience.
The second I saw you guys reacting to the first movie I knew this one would make you cry. I cried just watching the reactions but I really do love the first two and really like the third. Stoics death and funeral was haunting and how the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless helped him through his grief. Also I regularly listen to the duet between Stoic and Valka. Also also I love Cate Blanchett and have yet to dislike anything she’s been in. Always top tier.
This is my absolute favorite film of all time! From the very moment I finished watching this film was the exact moment I decided to get into animation and filmmaking. At all costs, I had to be a filmmaker to create something that captures even a glimpse of what this film did to me. An absolute masterpiece!
yes based on a book. but the book is definitely more for kids. there is a lot of character building in the tv series "dragon riders of Berk" where they did a "Dragon of the Week" trope.
Tara!! this channel has always been special among reaction channels, but i just hope you know how much more special you have made it by joining. i am always so excited to hear your thoughts about these movies that i love so much. can’t wait for the third when it arrives!!
Hiccup's mom: "There's no talking to him. We must protect our own." Them: "Ah yes, she's still got that stubbornness in her." OR, more poetically speaking, despite her being the exact opposite of Hiccup's dad, she said the exact same thing as Hiccup's dad, perhaps hinting that they can be exact opposites on everything but that one thing remains the same, and maybe there's a reason.
Stoic went out doing what he believed, protecting his own. I like the fact that he fought and looked desperate to get to Hiccup in time, it was beautifully done. The whole movie is just a beautiful film to look at but also to experience. I also love that characters don't act out of character just to further the plot, like what other movies do, they all act and react exactly as their characters would. Also, as well as being a coming of age story for Hiccup, it's a coming of age story for Toothless too, as they are around the same age, and they both rise to the challenge and grow into adulthood, with Toothless becoming the Alpha and Hiccup becoming the new Chieftain. The visual storytelling in this puts other movies to shame.
I remember seeing the very first ever trailer for this movie, just showing a masked Hiccup flying with Toothless and it was just mesmerizing on its own with the visuals, music, everything. But what really blew me away was when they showed Hiccup's face after he took his mask off. The younger version of me seeing that for the first time just surprised the fuck out of me cause at that time, it was super rare to see an animated character aged up like that. It was pretty mind blowing to me lol I do like this movie, I dont think I like it as much as everyone else, but its still pretty damn good despite the flaws I see in it.
It's so cool to see some continuity from the kids series make it to Movie #2 - particularly the trust missions. There was an entire episode dedicated to Toothless & Hiccup figuring out maneuvers mid-air; trusting that they'll "catch each other" instead of floundering like in Movie #1. The result is Toothless & Hiccup's entry scene here were they can have fun while free-falling, and when Toothless has to trust Hiccup's leadership while flying blindfolded.
I feel like you captured exactly why I am so attached to these movies. They communicate so much without words and I can identify and feels safe with that because I have trouble communicating with words. Great reaction, truly. I love both your insights
What I love the most about watching the movies is I get to THEN watch the animated shows, they're canon to the storyline and it really allows you to grow with the characters, including more background details and information about the dragons, character development, and most importantly, you get to witness their journey (from the first movie to the next). I just really love this series.
As a Danish person (our ancestors were Vikings), seeing the traditional funeral for Stoic also made me cry. We Danes obviously don't burry our loved ones the same way anymore, but back in the age of Vikings it was a tradition to "burry" the chiefs and other high-ranked and respected Vikings (both men and women) by sending them to sea on a boat, and filling that boat with that person's favourite belongings. Then they would fire arrows/small catapults ignited by fire at the boat, so that the deceased person and their belongings would rise up to Valhalla by the burning flames. It was a one of the most honorable funerals you could give your loved ones. As a Dane, I grew up with stories of which famous Danish Vikings got such a funeral, as well as going to several museums that had blueprints of the boats used for this, as well as the belongings that were most often chosen to "accompany" the person to Valhalla (these were usually their favourite clothing, foods, favourite songs with their lyrics written on paper, weapons, and several gifts from their loved ones). Viking-ness is a very big part of our education, and Danish kids learn everything there is to know about Vikings and the time they lived in in great detail. I bet witnessing a real Viking funeral must have been a spectacular experience.
45? You're still a bebby!! But seriously, happy birthday! I might have said this on the first one, but I wouldn't say this is necessarily better, but it DOES move the story forward beautifully, it shows the characters' growth brilliantly and the growth of all the relationships between everyone, it ups the stakes brilliantly without OVER-upping them, it's just a perfect example of how to do a sequel right. And the tears...ALL the tears....holy shit do I weep every damn time. When Valka realises who Hiccup is, her reunion with Stoick, Stoick's death and bot Hiccup's AND Toothless' reactions, Hiccup getting through to Toothless, the victory over the dark Alpha...So. Many. Tears.
This is my favourite DreamWorks film of all time. Absolutely phenomenal. As a kid, I don't think I appreciated how mature this movie truly is. One of those movies that leaves me crying for hours
I've said this on a bunch of HTTYD videos, but what breaks my heart about one part of this movie, besides the animation, scoring, and voice work, is that Eret, Son Of Eret shot an arrow with the others, respecting a chief that was never his.
Going back and watching the first movie after watching the trilogy, listening to Hiccup's speech to Astrid about how he saw himself in Toothless gets me every time
She was actually giving great advice on the birthday thing, Greg. I'm in my mid thirties. If I said I'm 21, I'm a busted looking 21 year old. BUT, if I say I'm 53, I look DAMN good for 53. Always lie up, kids.
I love the guy that watches these videos. I couldn't watch these without him. I feel like his reactions are the most authentic of anyone's on this channel. I do like everybody else but he is my favorite reactor. I feel what he feels. He's so empathetic to what he watches❤❤❤
I honestly like this movie better than the first and third for me. This is seriously one of my favorite animated movies of all time! It was refreshing to visually see the characters actually age after the first film. Another thing this franchise does so well. Losing Stoick was such an emotional gut punch, and never fails to break me, no matter how many times I see this movie. What an emotional rollercoaster!
So the best thing about this franchise is that there is so much extra content outside of the 3 movies, but they are not a detriment to the movies themselves.. you can literally just watch the movies and never watch one episode of the TV shows unless you just want more Dragons
i remember seeing this at the cinema, the scene with stoicks death and then toothless coming out of it, broke me. In fact the whole cinema was dead silent at that point, apart from the sound of tears. i know people go on about John wick being a perfect set of films. Well HtTYD is also a perfect trilogy. I really don't want them to remake these films into live action.
If the live action movie(s) suck which like… 85% chance they probably will, We can just give them the Cars 2 treatment, And pretend they simply don’t exist
Hope Greg reads this... This is my favorite trilogy of ALL time! Man, seeing you get just as emotional as me is just so awesome, love the videos you guys are making and I cant wait for you to see number three!
It’s wild because even though the first two are perfect, somehow the third is still my favorite. I can’t wait to see your reactions to it. I watched it in the theater and it was embarrassing how much I was crying (as I do with every movie in the trilogy)
Don’t worry man I watched this movie with my friends and I was a fucking mess. They cried a bit too but I didn’t understand why they weren’t having a breakdown like I was. Movie is so touching and the music couldn’t be more perfect
I had the great privilege to see all of these movies in theaters on opening weekend. The first one, I was fairly young, but it’s like a core memory for me, and I practically grew up with Hiccup and toothless and the first movie had me searching for dragons on the Utah mountains as a child well into my teens. These are my all time favorite animated movies ever!! Can’t wait for the reaction to the third one guys!!!
Thank you for the emotional rollercoaster with my morning coffee! 😳☕ This film may be my favorite sequel of all time, and that's saying a LOT! Can't wait for your reaction to 3!
Stoick and Valka reunited is my favorite scene in the entire trilogy. Its so real and human you completely forget youre watching an animated movie. I like how her guilt is portrayed, wanting to be justified by him screaming at her ( which she thinks she deserves and maybe does a little, depending on the point of view ). But hes just blinded by his love for her and the awe of having her back. Hes probably pissed, alot even. But lets be real thats how you initially would react. And yeah, then these a-hole moviemakers make us love Stoick more and more just to... Absolutely stunning movie :) 9.5/10
Fun Fact About both Valka and Drago's Staffs. They are meant to resemble elephant hooks used to give Elephants command, while some (Like Valka's) were used to just play with Elephants, Most (Like Drago's) were used to abuse elephants and make them slaves. Which is why when Drago loses his hook, his Beasts stop listening to him.
This was the film that broke me. When I went to see this film in theatres, a family member had recently passed, and that scene came up, I openly sobbed at it. I still can’t watch this film without getting tears in my eyes. This movie should have won best animated picture for that one scene alone.
This might sound mean, but seing a Crying Greg in the Thumbnail always means it’s a great Reaction and a great Movie (HTTYD is one of my Fav Franchises and Stoicks death still makes me cry
Fun Fact: Apparently, in the original script, Hiccup's mom was gonna be the villain. I don't remember if it was because she misunderstood was he was doing or something.
i saw a comment a while ago saying that the reason hiccup was telling his dad to stay away when toothless was being controlled is bc in the show hiccup had been practicing for a moment like this so he knew what to do
I still can't get over that none of these movies won any Oscars. All three were nominated for best animation. First one lost to Toy Story 3, second to Big Hero 6 and third to Toy Story 4. They are great movies, but nothing compared to this trilogy. The first one was also nominated for best score. There are many reasons why I think (especially the first movie) might have the greatest soundtrack of all time and John Powell needs to be recognized as the power house of a composer that he is!
The parent’s seeing each other for the first time and the “You’re as beautiful as the day I lost you.” For me, will I think forever be the best line in a movie.
I loved this film franchise and this movie is The first DreamWorks Animation film to win a Golden Globe award for Best Animated Film and The second non-Disney/Pixar film to win the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature, the first was The Adventures of Tintin. •The drawings on the wall in the Dragon stables in Berk were actual drawings done by the children of the crew who worked on the film. •Shrek and How to Train Your Dragon are the only DreamWorks franchises to be based on children's books.
Who else cried his seat wet in the cinema watching HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 back then? Stoicks death, reunion with mom, toothless regaining control through hiccup…. I LOVE THESE MOVIES God I am so glad I was born 2003 to be able to watch all the movies with my parents in cinema 😭😭😭
I’ve always told people this is my all time favorite animated movie. Every aspect from the shot choice, music, acting, and dialogue. It’s all fantastic.

How is he gonna survive the 3rd movie
@@wisewillowgames "barely", i think, would not be entirely inaccurate
@@cybergeek11235 ya hes gonna be just like me lol
Killing off Stoic without even a farewell is probably what hurts me the most. There was no "I' proud of you my son" or anything like that. He just got shot by Toothless and die in an instant. It's very realistic and heartbreaking.
Also he had that opportunity in the first movie before Hiccup got on toothless to take on the Green Death.
Very much agreed
Couldn't have said it better.
Dude, the “you’re as beautiful as the day I lost you” kills me every time. Guaranteed way to make me cry
To be fair, he has canonically changed the minds of many similar enemies in the past. I understand why he thought he could change Drogo's mind too.
Very true. There's a great line from the Thor movies that truly defines this statement: "A wise king never seeks out war, but must always be ready for it"
He changed the minds of his father and the villagers. They weren’t ‘enemies’. None of them wanted to use or kill people.
@@dajtoad1in the TV shows which are Canon, he does connect and changes enemies, some of them even feel incredibly loyal to Hiccup.
The progression between movies is insane and seeing in the shows makes it even better
Idk how they did it, but they somehow managed to make the score EVEN BETTER. The thrill you feel from the music alone is enough to make you feel as if you're soaring through the clouds.
I'll tell you man that almost pure overstimulating excitement and joy on Hiccups face when his mom and dad start dancing and singing is so wholesome.
The line "You’re as beautiful as the day I lost you." ALWAYS makes me sob. I love this movie so much and it always makes me cry 😢
Man, when you least expect it, you're already like this:
taananaananaaaan tanananananaaan tanananaan nanananaaan nanananarananranaan turururururururuuuu
(sorry i just woke up)
This movie is impossible to watch without getting emotional. The scene of Hiccups mom and dad reuniting NEVER FAILS to make me cry!
And the song “Where no one goes” is impossible to listen to without getting chills. You can just close your eyes while listening to it and feel like you and Toothless are flying through the clouds.
I love how emotional Greg gets, always gets me teary eyed
It’s comforting to know that this movie makes other people just sob like I do EVERY. SINGLE. TIME!!!
Seeing Greg get so emotional, it truly is the power of movies.
The speech where Hiccup talks about becoming his dad, a tear falls down him his face and its some of the most beautiful animation I've seen.
" A chief protects his own ! " one of my all time favorite lines
I'd recommend you watch the TV series too. It's not necessary to see before the movies, but they added some world building and really showed their growth in between the first two movies.
Series was really good I put it on for my nephew and watched the occasional episode with him but it's definitely worth a watch for sure I think he actually came up with the flame sword in that series too
@@DanielGonzalez-vo5ni He did plus the wing-suit too
@@kaijukyru I like to think Hiccup’s Inferno/Fire Sword in this movie is inspired by Viggo’s own improved Fire Sword , which had that unique capability of releasing Zippleback gas.
"You're as beautiful as the day I lost you." Without fail makes me tear up every time.
I love the symmetry of the battle scene when the 2 alphas are fighting, Drogo and Stoic are fighting; and when the white alpha falls Stoic falls to Drogo. It’s even sadder and ironic when he said pre-fight, “It takes more than a little fire to kill me.”
And just like the end of the 1st movie where Hiccup and Toothless lose body parts on the same side, Drogo and his alpha have missing parts on the same side (his arm and tusk)
i bawled like a bairn to this movie when i first saw it, and still shed a few tears to this day when i rewatch it.
the How To Train Your Dragon movies are easily the best Animated Trilogy in existence.
One thing I love about this series is the connection to the shows and it’s whole vibe
I can’t believe I’ve never noticed with cloudjumper and toothless it’s like the duo of having an older nature cat and a younger energetic cat
I love this movie series so much! When the first one came out, it quickly became my favorite Dreamworks movie. I’m so happy you guys are watching it!!
I am so hyped for the reaction to the third one!
It just brings the "evil Hiccup" Thing they mentioned in the beginning to a whole new level!
Hiccup's mom: "There's no talking to him. We must protect our own."
Them: "Ah yes, she's still got that stubbornness in her."
OR, more poetically speaking, despite her being the exact opposite of Hiccup's dad, she said the exact same thing as Hiccup's dad, perhaps hinting that they can be exact opposites on everything but that one thing remains the same, and maybe there's a reason.
Those words “You’re as beautiful as the day I lost you.” Makes me break down every time I see this movie.
I'm sure he appreciated that stoick spared him
@@KenSahaja I'm sure he did, too.
So excited to see Greg and Tara reacting to this movie! This movie is so amazing and incredible! 👍
Man Gerard Butler did very well as the dad! Gets me everytime dude 😭🔥
I think we can all confirm that this is rhe thumbnail we expected. Such a great movie!
Greg is the most emotionally valitating guy I've ever watched, im here crying my heart out and hes there with me.
love the first flying scene so much... you can see hiccup and toothless becoming the same, it's so good
So the best thing about this franchise is that there is so much extra content outside of the 3 movies, but they are not a detriment to the movies themselves.. you can literally just watch the movies and never watch one episode of the TV shows unless you just want more Dragons
i remember seeing this at the cinema, the scene with stoicks death and then toothless coming out of it, broke me.
I love the intros to these Movies "This is Berk"
Thank you for the emotional rollercoaster with my morning coffee! 😳☕ This film may be my favorite sequel of all time, and that's saying a LOT! Can't wait for your reaction to 3!
This movie hit so much harder after watching the show in between. It’s like watching revenge of the sith after watching clone wars
RTTE is to HTTYD as The Clone Wars is to Star Wars
I really cannot wait to see the reaction to the third movie. This trilogy truly impacted my childhood and I’m so glad you guys are visiting it
This was the film that broke me.
I'm not crying, you are. 🥺
Nah bro
I always cry at the ending to the third movie, excited for you guys to react!!
Oh the heartbreak in this one 😢

I loved this film franchise and this movie is The first DreamWorks Animation film to win a Golden Globe award for Best Animated Film and The second non-Disney/Pixar film to win the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature, the first was The Adventures of Tintin.
•The drawings on the wall in the Dragon stables in Berk were actual drawings done by the children of the crew who worked on the film.
•Shrek and How to Train Your Dragon are the only DreamWorks franchises to be based on children's books.
They're just so good at expanding. After the first movie, this one feels so much wider and more grown and heavier
Who else cried his seat wet in the cinema watching HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 back then? Stoicks death, reunion with mom, toothless regaining control through hiccup…. I LOVE THESE MOVIES
