I saw the first HTTYD in theaters shortly after I turned 7. Walking out, I told my parents that they HAD to make a sequel. My dad argued that there was nothing left in his story so there probably wouldn't be one.
I saw the second HTTYD in theaters a few months after I turned 11. I walked out, smug smile on my face as my dad finally accepted that I had called the sequel as a 7 year old. "But don't expect a third one, there's actually no where else to go now, he's grown up." he said as I rambled on about where the story could go from there.
I saw the third HTTYD in theaters for my 16th birthday. I walked out of the theaters crying and I turned to my dad, "That one. That was the end of the story." He agreed.

HTTYD was the first 3D movie I ever watched. I was 10 years old. For the screening of the final part I drove the car myself. A friend, his sister and me went to the Netherlands to watch it in English, because the closest cinema showing the OV was right across the border. We wanted to finish it in English, a language I didn't even speak a proper sentence of when I started the journey. Isn't it interesting how well you can document your life following an emotional story about a boy and his dragon?

"There were dragons... when I was a boy... Where they went, only a few know."
For years on end, this simple sentence will cause people to spontaneously cry, and for good reason. This trilogy is a perfect emotional ride, and the closing out of the trilogy represents the loss of childhood innocence and the wistfulness that comes with it so well. None of us really understood until that moment that we were not ready for a world without dragons, and we will always feel their loss.

My favorite quote from this movie was near the end when Hiccup sends Toothless and the other dragons to the hidden world.
He says, "We don't deserve you...yet."

The shot of Toothless and Hiccup saying goodbye is exactly like the first time Hiccup touched Toothless in the first one but reversed. The symbolism of that shot made me cry even harder in the cinemas when I saw it because I instantly picked up on it. The first time it was them meeting, connecting, and beginning their journey together to discover who they are, the last time was them saying goodbye and instead of placing his hand on Toothless, it was him removing it. I absolutely loved this trilogy and thought it was wonderfully wrapped up and the call backs from the first movie made me feel very nostalgic since I followed this trilogy since I was a kid and loved watching these characters grow as I did.
It was such a wonderful experience to see you guys fall in love with these movies that shaped my childhood and I'm really glad you enjoyed the ride.

This was the perfect way to end the trilogy. As always, the animation, music, and flying sequences are incredible. I love how this movie focuses on Hiccup and Toothless as individuals. (Hiccup, struggling to lead the clan and realize that dragons need to be free and on their own, and Toothless, reconnecting with his own kind, finding a mate, and fulfilling his role as alpha.) I love all the new dragons introduced, the hidden world is gorgeous, Grimmel serves his purpose as a dark, alternate version of Hiccup really well, and the ending is so mature, bittersweet, and beautiful. I love that DreamWorks went in this direction. This is one of the few trilogies, in my opinion, where all three movies are undoubtedly amazing, and I couldn't be happier with it.

That ending absolutely broke me into tears in the theater, and I was balling my eyes out for half an hour straight. It wasn't even at the part where the dragons had to leave, it was the scene where tootless and hiccup reunite and they do one final ride. I was 16 when I first saw the first HTTYD...on October 16, 2010, my parents and I rented it from Blockbuster's, so that dates me. By the end of the Forbidden Friendship scene in the first movie, I had fallen in love with this movie. Four years later, on June 13, 2014, I saw How To Train Your Dragon 2, not expecting to love Eret, Son Of Eret as much as I did, and still do, and not expecting to cry as much as I did. I was *bawling* in the theater. I had gotten spoiled on Tumblr about a certain scene in HTTYD2 (aka the scene that broke me; who caused Stoick's death), but I still just bawled. The execution of this, the voice work by Jay (Hiccup), Gerard (Stoick), Cate (Valka), and Craig (Gobber) (plus the rest of the cast), plus the animation and the score by the amazingly talented composing genius that is John Powell.
It was a scene that I've held with me for the past nine years since I first saw it in theaters. As for Hidden World, my mom and I went to see it (as opposed to when I saw HTTYD2 alone) the day it opened, February 22, 2019. My mom cried more than I did, and I'm sure I would have cried more, had she not been there. Eret, Son Of Eret, from the day I "met" him, on June 13, 2014, I've loved him. I may never get the privilege to meet Kit Harington (the voice of Eret) or Dean DeBlois (the director of HTTYD), but I just want to commend the both of them for their beautiful work. Like I said, I didn't expect to love Eret as much as I do, and, go ahead, call me crazy, but, I do turn to Eret, Son Of Eret in times of need and comfort and sadness...he was "there" when my Grandma died, and I don't know what I would've done if he hadn't been there.
Thank you for reading my novel of a comment (I'm an author, so I do get carried away), and I just wish that DreamWorks would make a series between the second and third movies, like they did with the series between the first and second movies, and I know I'm not alone in that sentiment.

It’s a minor detail in comparison but i loved that Astrid kept riding her own dragon it further confirmed that the transformation and that it’s now about genuine profound connections between humans and dragons no longer an exploitative one. This series is perfection.

I commented something similar on the last one too, but I was a huge fan of the books growing up. These movies are NOTHING like the books, but they're incredible! I'm a huge fan of both the books and the movies! Hiccup's ending monologue, though, is straight from the books, so when I heard that for the first time, I SOBBED. It still makes me cry like a baby every time. It felt like my whole childhood was being wrapped up in a nice little bow, but every time I pick up one of the books or watch one of the movies, I get to revisit one of the best parts of my childhood.

There was 1 short movie they made after the first HTTYD called Gift of the Night Fury. And it links to this part 20:25 where Hiccup made an auto-tail and Astrid says "you made it before, he didn't want it" as well as a bonus short film after the last movie titled How To Train Your Dragon: Homecoming. Would recommend you guys react or even just watch it for some pure wholesomeness and more dragon shenanigans 😊

HTTYD is my absolute favorite animated trilogy of all time. The storytelling (both verbal & visual), its character progression, the emotion, and obviously, its drop-dead gorgeous animation and cinematography. Having Roger Deakins involved with these films really added a whole new level of cinematic beauty. I watch this whole trilogy in one sitting every few months and it has never dropped in quality for me.

I am so happy that they ended on the note that they still interacted with the dragons in some way, I found myself thinking the separation felt slightly too forced at the end, so the positive ending with the babies and dragon babies is so much more heart-warming saying that although they can't live together they can still get along and see one another as equals

There was apparently a spin-off series set fire in the future happiness movie. The synopsis:
Set 1,300 years after the events of How To Train Your Dragon, dragons are now just a legend to the modern world. When a geological anomaly opens up an immense, miles-deep fissure in the Earth’s surface, scientists from all over the world gather at a new research facility to study the mysterious phenomenon. Soon a group of misfit kids, brought to the site by their parents, uncover the truth about dragons and where they’ve been hiding - a secret they must keep to themselves to protect what they’ve discovered.

One thing I love about this trilogy is the message and how it matures with its audience.
HTTYD 1 starts off with Hiccup as a tween finding himself, movie has a lighthearted and “kiddish” tone, with the audience most likely being kids.
Five years later in HTTYD 2 we see Hiccup close to adulthood, who must accept growing up and to become chief, with the tone of the movie much darker and more mature, with the same kids who watched the first movie five years older.
And Five more years later, HTTYD 3 is released, with those same kids who watched the first now adults, who must accept to let go of these beloved characters as the trilogy we all know and love comes to an end.
How To Train Your Dragon is the Perfect Trilogy.

Not sure if you guys watch TV series, but there are a couple series that go in between the first two movies and one that takes place over 1000 years later in the modern day. They are called Dragons: Race to the Edge and Dragons: The Nine Realms, respectively. Both are pretty good, but Realms in particular suffers from a reduced budget in terms of spectacle.
