This entire franchise was shot in New Zealand. The Shire still stands today, and is just as beautiful. Places like Rivendell, and Isengard were actually built as “bigatuers” they had multiple huge models at different scales so they could get actual camera shots of the towers, the rivers, or place the beautiful elven landscape behind the actors.
    It was ingenious.
Yes they did use cgi on gollum, the fight with the balrog and that internal cave.
The makeup is all practical and each weapon was handmade. This film is a true labor of love.

Fun Fact: when filming wrapped on the movies rather than have the set of Bag End be disassembled and destroyed as you’re supposed to, Peter Jackson actually kept the house intact and had it moved a few hundred miles away to his home and be used as a guest house. Elijah Wood and Sir Ian McKellan have stayed over there for vacations. And then he did the exact same thing for The Hobbit Trilogy.

So some back story/ lore answers to questions you had.
Sauron used to have a boss named Morgoth. Sauron is like an angel, Morgoth literally helped create the whole universe (along with other gods). Morgoth waged a huge war against elves way back when and men also helped, those men were the ancestors of Aragorn. Thus he is blessed with long life. There are also regular humans which don’t have the long life. Sauron was the head lieutenant of Morgoth and had waged war against the elves in very tricky ways. Over this very long many thousands of years, he had suffered a few defeats and been weakened. So when he crafted the ring, he didn’t have his full power to split between the ring and himself. Once the ring was parted from him, his physical form could not remain intact. That’s why he exploded. He became something like a spirit. It took him a long time to reform, into even what we see here which is not fully physical but still enough to be in the world affecting things and be seen. Then he could start exerting power over the evil men from the east and south, who have long been captured in cults to Sauron, and goblins, orcs, goblin men, trolls, spiders, anything dark and evil is drawn to him.
26:45 so this is why the extended editions are important. Remember, the humans want power, so they end up wanting the ring a lot; the wizards being very powerful already, are easily twisted by the ring, and more potential for the ring to corrupt. The hobbits, as explained by Bilbo in the extended edition intro, are very simple folk. Only loving farming, cooking, eating, drinking, and partying / being social with other hobbits. Power and wealth? Not really interesting. So there is less to corrupt, less opportunities to get its hooks into. Frodo, being a Baggins, is something like nobility. His cousin Pippin, is hobbit royalty. (merry is more distantly related to both of them and also nobility of hobbits) We see these three of all hobbits most interested in adventure, power or wealth, but also the necessary courage to even take on an adventure like this and leave home, we see this with Sam whose family has worked for the Baggins for generations (something like bound servants), never even leaving Hobbiton, let alone the larger Shire.
44:21 the 3 Elves made their rings using Sauron’s methods, but not with direct interference from Sauron. The elves do still have their rings, Gandalf has one of them. They can use them and the magic they wield as long as Sauron does not have his ring. If Sauron had his ring, he can read the the thoughts of whoever is wearing the elvish rings of power. The Dwarvish rings were created by Sauron & the elves, same as the human rings. The Dwarves being hardy and only wanting to mine and craft, were resilient and did not fall like the men. Instead they became very obsessed with treasure, digging too deep or hoarding too much gold, which brought their own problems in addition to going crazy for gold and not taking care of their kingdoms properly. The men turned to Nazgûl, it means “Ring Wraith”. They are like direct puppets for Sauron, and can be powerful in dark magic.
52:23 so yes, Saruman bred the Uruk Hai, they are half men, half orc/ goblin (it’s used interchangeably and means the same thing, but generally orcs are bigger and tougher than goblins), or maybe even half men and half goblin men. It’s not really clear exactly how it was done, and it was not something Sauron ever discovered. The Uruk Hai are stronger, better fighters, more intelligent and can move in the sunlight unlike goblins or orcs. Goblins/ Orcs were originally elves, but corrupted and twisted and cursed by Morgoth, it’s not super clear how they breed. But it known they are very industrialized, inventive, and have their own culture, violent as it may be.
58:10 the giant eagles are actually their own civilization, and one of the free peoples of middle earth. They descend from the servants of Manwe, Morgoths brother and the king good god of the world. The eagles have their own culture, and families, can speak, and have free will. They are not beasts of burden, but the head of the eagles does owe Gandalf a few favors. Gandalf calls one in at this time. You might hear people ask, why don’t they just fly to Mordor? You will see why in later movies. Sauron controls the sky. Also, would you ask some foreigners to carry you across a continent? Sorta rude, and they just aren’t meant to do things like that. They have consistently fought on the side of good during big wars of importance.
1:03:33 Elvish DOES mean something. Tolkien started this world by inventing languages, based on real world languages. Tolkien was someone who studied languages his whole life. It’s one of the most widely spoken “fictional” languages, and even has scholars who study elvish, and all its sub forms. All languages are made up, and enough people speak it that it is considered a real language. There are conventions where people speak only in elvish. In this universe, words, especially elvish, have magical properties. What you say matters, oaths & promises are binding, and breaking them can lead to consequences, which we see when Boromir breaks his oath to protect Frodo. We will see more of this later.
1:12:30 Fun fact about the mountain scenes, Sean Bean hated helicopters, and refused to ride it. So he hiked in full makeup and costume any days that required riding a helicopter. Dedication.
1:15:25 Gollum was like a proto-Hobbit, way back when they first split off from Men. He is very small also.
1:17:10 Gimli lives in the lonely mountain. The dwarves hadn’t been in Moria for a great long time, his cousin Balin went to go retake it, but didn’t expect such resistance. We see his body later, and another dwarf we meet in the Hobbit movies. The creature in the lake is from the very deep depths of the world, older than lots of other things, and maybe a mistake of creation. The lake connects to the deep parts of the mine, and is only one of the things Gandalf says is worse than orcs or goblins in Moria.
1:36:11 fun fact: Galadriel is one of the oldest things in all of middle earth. Even older than the sun and moon. She is one of the bearers of the elven rings. Elrond has the third. She can speak thru the mind of others, and sorta project herself far away. She is a very powerful elf because of where she was born and having seen the light of the two trees (the original light sources in this world that were holy light). That is why she glows, and specifically her hair. (Which her hair indirectly started started that huge war between Morgoth and the elves) The light gives her extra powers along with the ring. She is a very powerful high elf. The only thing about as old, is the ring Aragorn has, the Ring of Barahir, and Treebeard, who we will meet later.

Actually, one of my favorite parts of watching LOTRs reactions is people trying to keep up with the names, species and lore at the beginning, then by the end they're casually pronouncing things like Osgiliath correctly. The one ring corrupts anyone and everyone. The more power hungry and more powerful are more easily corrupted by the ring. It’s why the ring lasted so long with smeagle and both bilbo and Frodo, the hobbit race naturally does not crave power or adventure. It took longer to corrupt the hobbits compared to any other race

Something I love about these films is the way it portrays male friendships, and says “F you” to toxic masculinity. They all have strong bonds and emotions and don’t shy away from that. They’re not all stoic and gruff, holding everything in. The moment between Aragorn and Boromir, while he’s dying. They’re both so emotional, and then Aragorn kisses his forehead. Or Sam and Frodo crying in the boat at the end. You’ll see more moments like these in the 2nd and 3rd films.

A major theme of this first movie is the temptation of the ring. All the major characters of this world who had a decent chance of resisting the ring were tested to see what they would do with the ring just in their grasp. Gandalf, Aragorn, Elrond, Galadriel. There are others in this world on the side of good who would fail the test but "fate" never gave them to chance to be that close. Boromir's failure was necessary for Frodo to understand the longer the fellowship was with him and the closer the ring got to Mordor, eventually everyone in the group would fail the test.

I was SHOCKED when I saw this video come up. I was like "How the HELL have they not already seen this?" But then I was overcome with excitement that I get to see you react to what is in my opinion, the greatest movie trilogy of all time. There are a TON of fun facts about these movies but right now I'll give you three.
First: The cast of the fellowship became so close to each other during the filming of this that they all got matching tattoos of the elvish word for 9. Except for John Rhys-Davies who plays Gimli since he hates needles.
Second: These films were filmed in New Zealand and for the Hobbit movies, they built the Shire with lasting materials and now you can actually visit the Shire and go into the Hobbit homes.
Lastly: Viggo Mortensen was the last member to be cast. They originally had a younger actor for Aragorn but Jackson wanted the character to have a bit more presence, so they called Viggo who knew NOTHING about Lord Of The Rings, and his son Henry who HAD read the books overheard the call and convinced Viggo to take it. Viggo was then flown out, read the books on the way over, was put into costume and IMMEADIATLY filmed his fight scene with the Nazgul.

Hobbits age. Some live into their 100's but they *show* their age. Bilbo doesn't because of the ring. Frodo is 50 when they leave the Shire by the way. Hobbits become adults at 33. Sam is 38, Merry is 36 but Pippin is only 28. Pippin is still a kid on top of being a sheltered and naive Hobbit.
Per Tolkien pipe weed is just tobacco. 😂
Frodo, Merry and Pippin are cousins.
Gandalf the Grey is definitely dead.
Galadriel is Arwen's grandmother. Her daughter was married to Elrond but was killed by orks with poison. Galadriel is older than the sun and the moon. She's one of the oldest and most powerful elves in Middle Earth.
It's the 9 males from different races because Tolkien used his experiences as a soldier in WWI in the Somme while writing it. Sam is basically his depiction of a British batman who was an officer's aide/servant.

    • @torontomame
      @torontomame 2 часа назад

Thanks for all of this. As a big Tolkien nerd I wish this info was more apparent in the movie. One small thing, Arwen's mother wasn't killed by Orcs. They captured her, but her twin sons (who don't appear in the movies) rescued her. But the orcs had tortured her to such an extent that not even Elrond could fully heal her trauma. And she set sail to the "Undying Lands" where she could find peace.

If you're interested, I can tell you a few things, without spoilers, that aren't detailed enough in the film:
Galadriel (the Lady of the Light, from the elven word "galad") is a very powerful sorceress who in her millennial life fought many battles (most likely as heavy artillery) against the original dark lord Morgoth, the one who taught Sauron the way to the "dark side".
Galadriel and Elrond, the elven king of Rivendell, have telepathic powers, can communicate at a distance and he also has the gift of foresight.
Galadriel's daughter married Elrond and therefore Arwen, the one who swears eternal love to Aragorn, is Galadriel's granddaughter.
Galadriel's gifts to the company are enchanted and the two daggers given to Merry and Pippin have already been used in combat, as she tells them.
the palantir, Saruman's seer stone, is not the only one, there are others (another is kept in the city of Gondor, where Gandalf went to find information about the ring) and looking into it for too long can lead to addiction and folly.
Saruman doesn't actually seek the ring for Sauron but he believes he can bend its powers to his will.
Pippin comes from a noble family and he is the heir to the title of earl of the shire.

In-lore: The two worst weapons of the Nazgul were their abilities to generate terror and a poisonous mist they could call. People heard those shrieks, and some of them became paralyses by fear.
Production: the sound design people were having trouble getting a sound that was creepy enough. They stuck Fran Walsh in a sound booth and had her scream for about twenty minutes. She totally blew out her voice for a couple days, but they got the base sound for the Nazgul shriek.

When Tolkien, who became a philology professor was educated in England at Oxford University.
He started writing LOTR's by creating languages, such as Elvish, which was a life long hobby. This was around the time of WWI. At some point he created Middle-earth as a place where he could "people" his languages. Serving as a junior officer in the battle of the Somme, where many of his university friends were killed, he was obviously deeply affected by this experience. It was in those trenches that he started making his first notes for these books. He was also driven by the realization that most of England's "fairy stories" were not originally English but rather stories imported from the rest of Europe through conquest and were mostly European or Greco-Roman in origin. He sought to remedy this loss by re-imaging what the lost oral history of England would have been and creating what he believed it could have been.
At the time in which Tolkien wrote, English society was very class conscious and strictly differentiated. At the top of course was the royalty, then the well educated professional and business classes, followed by the working classes and the very poor. There was little contact between the different levels. It was in the trenches that he had his first exposure to young working class men. Officer's were assigned enlisted young men, aka "Batmen" to assist them with their daily duties, such as providing their meals keeping their uniforms presentable and of course making such indispensable's as a refreshing cup of tea. He was so impressed by the care and courtesy that he was shown that he modeled Samwise Gamgee after this experience. Sam as was his father before him (the Gaffer) the Baggins's family's gardeners and hence why he always refers to Frodo as "Mr."
Bilbo, Frodo, Merry and Pippen were all of the upper classes in Hobbit society and were all cousins to one degree or another. As such one reason they were so consumed by eating so many times a day, breakfast, second breakfast, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner supper et al.! if you didn't have to work what else to do? croquet? hunt? etc. etc.

23 years later these films still have the same effect on me as they did when I was child. I now have a tradition where I watch ALL 3 extended cuts of the Lord Of The Rings movies in one day. Yes it is emotionally exhausting, but it is also extremely rewarding.
And honestly my personal idea of heaven looks like The Shire. And Bag End would be my home.

I read the books in the early 70s. Since then, I’ve wanted to step thru a portal into Rivendell, but after the movies, the Shire is an extremely close second choice.

I’m sorry, “THAT ACTOR”? that actor is Sir Ian McKellen.

Possibly the greatest book adaptation ever, what a great movie

@@Burger-g4vI spent the entire time watching Twilight trying to figure out why I enjoyed the books so much. My oldest niece wouldn’t let her daughter read Twilight for ages, not because it was scary but because she thought Bella was a lousy role model. She did let her daughter read the HP books almost immediately.
