This ep is really where the campaign hits a stride and takes shape. And Jester’s prayer to The Traveler legit gave me goosebumps and made me tear up a little
Question that's a potential spoiler fi C2 (I don't know if I was spoiled for this plot point during C1 or if this is common knowledge so don't read on if you don't want to risk it): Do the gang know who The Traveler is, or is it just Laura? Or does she even know them by the other name/persona(s) we've met in C1 at this stage?
@@kevinpappers4494 You have excellent timing! I just yesterday watched the episode where the gang got the big reveal, and in the subsequent Talks episode Laura said she had come to Matt initially with the idea that The Traveler be you-know-who, but by the end things had been so mysterious that even she didn't know if that's who they'd turn out to be. Watching everyone else start to realise who it was one by one was so good :D
And then later in the episode he gives life advice to the people that were trying to rob them. I think he just loves making the world a better place, one person at a time, and in the most chaotic good way possible
I think he could play a true chaotic evil character and still do nice little things. I don't think he's capable of making a character that I don't like.
Hi, native German here. I just wanna say that Liam's Zemnian is hilarious (even moreso with the deadpan deliveries) and the pronunciation is on point. I love this represantation. Also I want Clockenticken to be a real word now.
Didn't he say siebzehn was seven in an earlier episode? I assume he doesn't really know much German IRL, so that would be an excusable mistake. But yeah, it does sound good and he makes it believable!
He said at one point that he has a couple little notes describing how the character sounds, like "high-pitched, nasal Irish" or something similar written next to the character's name.
Can we appreciate the moment when Beau decides to read the letters that she stole WEEKS ago (real time) and Matt reacts without ONE SINGLE SECOND of hesitation, explaining what is in them... mad respect.
One of my favorite things about re-watching M9, is how much Sam and Liam drop little easter eggs of their backstories that only they, Matt, and future critters re-watching would notice. The long con is real lol
Beau: “I’ll take my own room if you all don’t want in.” Jester: “...But we’ve always been roommates.” Beau: “Then come join me, girl!” Jester: “Okay!!” My heart melted.
The whole Pumat Sol scene was amazing, but my favourite moment specifically has to be when he introduces himself to Nott. *Nott:* (Terrified) "Y-you're large..." *Pumat Sol:* (Delighted) "You're small!"
The way Jester talks about growing up in such denial about the loneliness of her childhood. Her "I would listen through the door and here her singing." That made me so sad. Like honey that's not normal.
Me too. The fact that she was joking and smiling through it all made it even sadder. I'm not caught up yet so I don't have more context, but whether she puts on the funny facade to deal with the loneliness or whether her childhood has actually left her a stunted person in such denial that she'll probably stay a child forever, both options are equally heartbreaking.
It really makes you love the traveler, he saw a lonely little girl and decided to teach her and play with her just to be her friend #travelerislove #travelerislife
same. at this point I guess the party didn't have a close enough bond for anyone to really push back on this, but I hope in later episodes they might. here Jester sounded a lot like a kid who doesn't realize that their messed up home life isn't "normal," like situations of neglect or abuse. breaks my heart to think how that whole situation impacted her, being stuck in her room, alone, and always told she had to stay hidden. yes she has the cheery, joking way about her and wants to bring joy to others... but maybe she's also hurting underneath all that? watching this episode made me wonder even more about the Traveler. did this entity choose Jester as a convert/devotee/"friend"/etc because she was lonely, or seemed vulnerable? how will she react if the Traveler isn't all she hoped?
Yeah, that's also one of the things I love about the Critical Role cast specifically. They all cover for each other so well in any situation that needs it. I mean, obviously they've all done some form of improv, and they're all professional actors, but still, they're all able to think incredibly quickly on their feet and just bullshit their way out of any situation.
@@HyenaFox I agree! I think the combo of their acting skills, longtime friendship, and passion for the game makes CR truly special! I also think it opens a lot of intriguing (and entertaining) possibilities just knowing that there's more than one way through encounters, and fighting might not always be the best choice. certainly makes some of the non-combat skills & stats that much more valuable to the party...
Well like, Caleb has magic lights on command with his cantrip It's one of the few disadvantages of being a human in DnD might as well keep it to have some effect before they even hit level 4

Can we please talk about how utterly heartbreaking it was to listen to Jester say she'd be alone if she could keep her one friend? Laura Bailey! That was amazing acting. Showing such vulnerability in a character that's been nothing but chipper and playful, and yet make it seem so genuine. I already loved her acting, but now...
My wife plays the same way with her characters. Last night we had an impromtu session of our campaign.. Sadly it was at the same time as CR. But my character was trying to save hers when I was about to die she caved and went with the man who was after her. My character was defeated. We had just admitted we loved each other. I was nearly in tears. But my wife usually has her characters sacrifice her happiness for the cause. Not quite the same as jester but close.
I didn’t understand it when I first watched it, but just last weekend I think I bruised a rib sneezing and now I get it…it HURTS. Feels better now tho 😊
"Anybody who tries to buy me a drink, I slip a silver into their pocket." Wow. Talisen is really playing Molly as the type of guy you wouldn't expect to be so nice. Like, he's so kind and generous. I love it.
That is why Liam is most commonly one of my favorites. He knows just how serious to be, and he knows when it's right to break tension. I honestly don't mind Marisha and Beau, they can be fun and interesting in their own right, but she could seriously use a few lessons from how Liam played/plays Vax/Caleb.
Marisha has vastly improved since Keyleth... I think a monk is a much less complicated class, which lets her focus more on the tiny details of her character. Liam, being someone who has many years of D&D experience doesn't usually get bogged down by his character, so he can focus on his role-playing more. He does seem to go too dark with his characters, tho. Can be a lil depressing...😓
@@KickyFut What was the matter when she was Keyleth? (I haven't seen Campaign 1 yet and am working through campaign 2). Also, I really like a bit of darkness in the characters.

I just started with the second campaign after watching Exandria Unlimited: Calamity (I followed Brennan from Dimension 20), and I can tell right away Liam and Taliesin are old school D&D players. Like 2nd Ed/AD&D old school (where I started because my first DM’s dad taught him to play with AD&D, and my second DM mixed elements of AD&D with 3rd Edition). I especially remember my second DM telling us to either describe our spells/skills or give them a new name that our character would use for them. And he was real crunchy with the material components and how much of what coin we had. I’m not sorry that campaign ended the way it did, but I am sorry it ended when it did. I had good reasons for killing the rest of my party*. *I was a Chaotic Nuetral Drow rogue who used my position as lead scout to escape the Underdark. A group of traveling adventurers came upon me and instead of befriending me, they captured me and used me to scam small farming towns. They’d release me, I’d kill a cow, scare some poor farmer half to death, and then the rest of the party would show as “drow hunters”. We stage a fight, extort the farmers and townsfolk for what they’ve got, and move on. It’s not how I and our DM thought it would go, but it was funny so we went with it. We’d just really “stumbled” upon the main quest our DM had for us, when OOC (out-of-character) bullshit started seeping into our game. Our cleric was dating our ranger and they started having relationship problems, and it got to the point where one would bring up real world shit in the game. Like if we want the cleric the heal anybody the ranger needed to apologize for some high school bullshit drama. Then my twin brother, our tank, a half-orc barbarian, came up with a solution and our next session I put it into action. When it came time to make camp for the night, I convinced everyone that I could take watch because I’m a Drow, I can see in the dark, and I only need 4 hours meditation as opposed to 8 hours sleep. I asked the DM if everyone was asleep, rolled a natty 19, and said what my brother told me to say, “I’ve had enough of this being captive bullshit. If they’re all dead asleep, coup de grâces all around. Then I want to take the barbarian’s bag of holding and loot the bodies for everything g valuable, including teeth and hair.” Our DM thought it was hilarious, and he was sick of the bullshit, so he just allowed it. The barbarian obviously thought it was funny, the ranger and cleric were pissed as hell, and our mage got confused and asked, “Why the teeth and hair?” To sell to goblins. They can use the hair to make ropes and teeth for bullets in their slingshots.
yeah tight as he goes to describe the firbolg he smiles but it's very obviously pumat's smile for a moment. He's SO EXCITED to introduce this guy that he almost jumped the gun describing him!
I like to imagine the original Ruby of the Sea song was a very beautiful work of art, it brought tears to your eyes if you ever heard it. 4 or 5 rounds of Narrative Telephone later, "The Ruby of the Sea is the best lay ever!"
@@anamitraroy1681 It was a joke that there was once a beautiful song that got eroded & eroded as people kept singing it from memory of memory of memory. Much like Narrative Telephone takes a well-told story and turns it into "I'm Beau! I'm fuckin' Beau, I'm Beau, fuckin', Beauregard Lionett! I'm fuckin' Beau!"
I love how wholesome the group can be, from Nott's birthday to the way they cared about Jester's past, to Matthew really caring when Marisha hurt herself, it's all just so precious.
1:03:55 the moment the legend was born. Don't get me wrong, I started watching during campaign 1 and loved every moment. But there's a big difference between being introduced to Vox Machina (already established) and getting to see the M9 pick their name and start coming into their own.
Well, Vox Machina was not their first name before the show. It was "The S.H.I.T.'s" Super High Intensity Team when they played at home but they changed that when they were discussing doing the stream, a good decision overall I would say.
@@adarian I know, but it's less of the name and more of them becoming a party. Neither VM or M9 started out working together, and when they did it was for convenience, until they trusted each other and formed a strong bond. VM became a connected party pre-stream; & I thought it was cool to watch that happen with the M9
It's not even so much that we get to see them pick their name. It's the fact that it came so naturally. "The Mighty! Yeah!" "What are some cool words in Zemnian?" "We are the Mighty Nein." Like, in the space of 15 seconds, they found it. That's crazy.
Its exactly why I struggled to get into Campaign 1. We missed this entire part of the story of how they came together as a party and why they treat each other in certain manners, where as we get to see the Mighty Nein from the very start, and it is a joy to watch the journey from beginning to end.
Lol i just now got notification about how i actually had replies to this. I was at one point caught up, but stopped watching not long into the second campaign. It just didn't hold me like the first campaign did. I might try again in the future
I've only recently started watching critical role, and have until this point been convinced Liam is very socially awkward. Turns out he's just an amazing actor, lol
He is an incredible actor, but he has also said that he's pretty socially awkward irl. I think it's just hard for us to tell bc we see him around close friends all the time. It helps that he's such a goofball and a sweetheart.
Goblins are full adult at age 8 in DnD lore, but *spoiler* so what she saying is that her age are between 16 and 22 by human and *spoiler* standarts. Pretty huge range, but makes perfect sense in her situation.
I know Matt would be too humble to accept this praise, but I just can't believe how creative he is. The countless names of places and stores, the voices, the character descriptions, the layout of the map... I'll bet the party could throw a wrench into the daily plans and just say "We want to go here today!" and he'd have the entire town mapped out and ready for them to explore, plus have quests and stuff for them good to go.
Abelhawk or maybe he has mad good improv skills and a bunch of maps and characters ready to go that could be anywhere. When I improv DM I just hang on to some random maps like tavern map, arena map, grove map etc. And if they go off the plan I just start plugging in resources and people, so in a way it doesn't matter where they go they still run into my content so its kinda illusion of choice lol. Great way to use anything they missed or characters that died or weren't really interacted with. Don't throw it away keep that stuff to plug in elsewhere. Someone like Mercer probably has a gigantic backlog to pull random characters and maps from.
fieldy409 this right here is like, 80-90% of good dming. Source: am DM for 14 years counting. You'd be surprised how much you can be prepared for with so little prep time, with practice.
He is a great storyteller but this is a common skill for writers and storytellers to have. The bonus is with his acting ability for voices. Having the skill to create characters and worlds is just like people who have a skill for math. He could be a novelist and really create this world in depth outside of the game or campaign guide. All of the groundwork is done.

Honestly his dedication make the wizard so much more interesting and make me want to be more strict about it in my game because it give an othet level of immersion
For many things an arcane focus can take the place of any material component without a gold value
Then I want to take the barbarian’s bag of holding and loot the bodies for everything g valuable, including teeth and hair.”
Our DM thought it was hilarious, and he was sick of the bullshit, so he just allowed it. The barbarian obviously thought it was funny, the ranger and cleric were pissed as hell, and our mage got confused and asked, “Why the teeth and hair?”
To sell to goblins. They can use the hair to make ropes and teeth for bullets in their slingshots.

Its exactly why I struggled to get into Campaign 1. We missed this entire part of the story of how they came together as a party and why they treat each other in certain manners, where as we get to see the Mighty Nein from the very start, and it is a joy to watch the journey from beginning to end.

One day, I will be caught up. Until then tho, every day is Thursday for me.
Argentumlobo Wolf Are you caught up yet?
Please mate we need to know, are you caught up yet?
Lol i just now got notification about how i actually had replies to this. I was at one point caught up, but stopped watching not long into the second campaign. It just didn't hold me like the first campaign did. I might try again in the future
Yes and sometimes it's Thursday two times a day

This man really just lays on the table for 5 minutes, huh? The character dedication is incredible
He took a page from Travis's book. In C1 he held a pose when petrified for roughly 5-10 minutes. I hope to one day be this dedicated to my roleplaying
You can tell everyone has fun. But Liam and Travis really just go for it.
I was looking for a comment on this. Laughing so hard rn😂😂😂
I've only recently started watching critical role, and have until this point been convinced Liam is very socially awkward.
Turns out he's just an amazing actor, lol
Me too
He is an incredible actor, but he has also said that he's pretty socially awkward irl. I think it's just hard for us to tell bc we see him around close friends all the time. It helps that he's such a goofball and a sweetheart.
If you watch the between the sheets, most of them are socially awkward. Ashley was the worst prior to meeting Bryan
what part of this episode tipped you off?

Nott: I'm of child-bearing age.
Jester: Oh!
Nott: Somewhere between 6 and 9.
Jester: 👁👄👁
Goblins are full adult at age 8 in DnD lore, but *spoiler* so what she saying is that her age are between 16 and 22 by human and *spoiler* standarts. Pretty huge range, but makes perfect sense in her situation.
Marisha: *quietly dying in the background*
Its funnier if you know that Sam set Scanlan's age as 69, and set Nott's age between 6 and 9
Imagine thinking you found some easy marks and then your leader gets knocked into the air by a lollipop and incinerated by 3 rays of pure fire.
Can't wait to see the lolipop animated whenever they do the TV show.
I would be both humored and horrified
Abelhawk I mean, he did plan out their drug shopping so I have to agree with you
Agreed
He is a great storyteller but this is a common skill for writers and storytellers to have. The bonus is with his acting ability for voices. Having the skill to create characters and worlds is just like people who have a skill for math. He could be a novelist and really create this world in depth outside of the game or campaign guide. All of the groundwork is done.
29:28 Caleb being so excited to analyze magical items is _adorable_
It reminds me of when one has a special interest or hyperfixation, which is really nice as I have both towards different things.

@@carrotandpeas Do you know what episode we find out what it's from? On my first watch after catching up with Campaign 1.
@@allyzxc I'm not that far, sorry. I know because I willingly received spoilers, but I only know that it's past episode 30. Though there are hints of it sprinkled throughout the show, I'm not sure when they're gonna reveal that bit. I'll come back here(if I remember) when I reach that part though. Currently on episode 29, and the only bit that kinda references that is when Caleb tells Beau and Nott why he's afraid of fire, and honestly I can't remember what episode that's from either, but it should be around here.

The "fun" of rewatching
I adored Vex, but Jester is Laura in her purest form. Completely adorable and utterly terrifying.
"Would you agree that the previous leadership of this group has probably failed you on some level?" Damn, that was probably the funniest line yet.

The ruby of the sea song is one of my favorite moments (1:17:27).
