I had a character in one of my games ask how an enemy ranger's arrow quiver was attached to them. I answered that it is strapped around their waist with a belt, latch and all. She immediately pulls out her Chime of Opening to open the latch, causing the quiver to fall and leave the ranger without any arrows. Brilliant play that left the enemy without their method of doing the most damage.

I guess the DM didn't use spell mechanics like "range".
Imagine closing ranks on a guy in combat and you have a "key" in your hand. Or a chime? While he is shooting at you? 😕 Now if the range on that chime is 100 feet.... that makes sense.

You can strike it as an action, pointing it at an object within 120 feet of you that can be opened, such as a door, lid, or lock. The chime issues a clear tone, and one lock or latch on the object opens unless the sound can't reach the object. If no locks or latches remain, the object itself opens. @redfaux74

Bounded accuracy is interesting.. but it's also part of WHY campaigns fall apart shortly after level 8.
"Oh, were most bags of hp and we both hit each other every turn?..."
It's just damage output vs damage absorbtion in the most boring way every turn.
Your twelvelth level fight swings their axe 7 times and does 85 damage. Then the monster hits for 55 damage.. then the fighter does his 7 attacks for 90 damage... And so on until someone chews through the ~200hp on the field.

I realize how old this video is now to make this comment but for those watching after this, the potion of speed does still come with the negative effects of the haste spell. The item says you gain the effects of the haste spell, and the lethargy is one of those effects. It happens regardless of whether concentration is dropped or the duration expires, and the potion doesn't say to ignore any part of it (which some magic items do specify). That said, getting the effect without having to concentrate on the spell is still incredibly strong!

Fun fact: The penalty for lacking proficiency in a shield applies when the shield is "worn" so anyone can use an animated shield. Except for a monk because you lose unarmored defense and movement when a shield is "benefited from"
It can also protect a moon druids wild shape or anyone you polymorph since those stop you from using items that are "worn or carried"
Anyone currently not using a shield, besides a monk, can use the animated shield quite well. But beware. As it can be targeted by spells directly and destroyed since it is no longer worn or carried

    • @deffdefying4803
      @deffdefying4803 Год назад +4

Reading the monk's Unarmored Defense feature on DDB, it makes no special mention about the monk not being able to have shields at all - simply that they must not be *wielding* a shield. I would personally interpret this as holding the shield with intent to use it.
With an animated shield, as long as it's animated, you are not holding it - because it explicitly states in its description that it leaps into the air and orbits your space, leaving your hands free.
I'd imagine the point of monks not being proficient with shields, and their features being heavily dependent on not wielding shields, is that they need their hands to be free all the time. Their main purpose is to beat the piss out of other creatures with unarmed strikes, after all.

I have always feared a deck of many things breaking an immersive campaign. One twist I've wanted to give it (never tried) is that it is found inert. It activates for one draw when 3 nat 20s are rolled by the party in its presence without any nat 1s in between. Maybe signal this to the party by having all the cards have 3 symbols on the back that light up one by one when a nat 20 is rolled and dissipate if a nat 1 is. Make it a puzzle that also depends on luck. But leave it active (disregarding further nat 1s) until used so they still can have that tactical choice of a hail Mary after solving its activation

There's a scene in The Thirteenth Warrior where Antonio Banderas's character, an Arabic intellectual who's stuck traveling with a dozen meatheaded Viking warriors, has been given a broadsword which he can barely lift. After failing miserably to chop a couple wooden stakes with this heavy clumsy thing, while the Vikings make fun of him for being weak like a girl (their words), he goes over to the village smith and asks to use his grinding wheel. Then, having ground down the broadsword and turned it into a scimitar, he's instantly awesome with it, and slices the log perfectly with a single one-handed stroke. The Scimitar of Speed really makes me think of that scene.

37:56 the thing you miss is math. if the hole has air for 10 minutes for one creature, then your 3 patry members only have 3min 20sec of air if we dont count the missing air 2 additional bodies would displace. However 10min of breathable air is only 22liters and the 6feet wide 10feet long zylinder could hold 7600liters (minus about 80 liters per body) that means a person could last over 2 days in such a space normally.

So, talking a bit on the bounded accuracy thing and the scaling you were talking about, around 42:00:
For reference, a +1 weapon was ranked #100.
    A +2 weapon was ranked #70.
One singular bump in numbers jumped the item up 30 places.
Think about that for a second.

#85... Decantur of Endless Water... makes a great ship engine if you're not sporting a Spelljammer helm. Combine with the Submerge Ship spell to make one helluva Submarine... if ships give chase, a carefully placed Wall of Force can stop'em cold. Mount on the deck and you're a firehose tugboat.

I love using upgraded ammunition as it stacks with the bows bonuses. Ranger hunting a very important target, +2 bow, +3 arrow, +5 total, and why stop at +3 you can go to +5 or +10 to give that character their guaranteed shot when it counts.

I should note for 12:47, in some versions of the Forgotten Realms, there are planes that can really mess up a party. Such as the plane of Air, Water, Pandemonium, Limbo, Radiance, Vacuum, ... etc. For high level parties that have prep time, this downside is diminished, but spamming the item could have some... unforeseen consequences.

I can not believe you did not put a Periapt of Proof Against Poison on this list. One gets IMMUNITY to common damage type, without use of an attunement slot. This is my absolute favorite item - except possibly for the Holy Avenger.
I would also add Sunblade somewhere in the middle.
How do you figure a dragon's breath weapon is a "magical effect" ?

something to note about the dwarven thrower, both thiefs and artificers can attune to it even if theyre not dwarves.
also, if you roll random loot and get a dwarven thrower but dont have any dwarves, or a dwarf in your party cant use it,
then you should consider adding the ability for a dwarf to attune an item to someone for them, it makes the situation not suck
for whoever gets the thrower, and adds some cool moments of either a cool tracking quest, or a moment of bonding between two characters.

One thing I did was give a barbarian player a weapon which allowed him to reduce his AC to get additional damage equal to the amount he reduced his AC by until the start of his next turn.

Gave my party the Amulet of the Planes. They rarely passed the save at the beginning, so they were thrown throughout the planes from constant spamming of the amulet. Eventually, the Cleric refused to let anyone else use it and had to actively fend off the rest of the party from trying to take it back. It allowed for a lot of fun shenanigans later on in late levels as well.

    Note on the magic ammo
Sell it as a gem or trinket you can slot in a quiver that enchants a either a rolled number of arrows at dawn or proficiency at dawn
Maybe allow up to 3 of these trinkets for a magic quiver or only 1 for a nonmagic quiver.

Maybe not top 10, but for me personally, my favorite and most game breaking item is Quall's Feather Token Tree. DMs who have played with me for a while now ban me from having it cause I can break almost any encounter with one. Instant 60 foot Oak tree, 30 ft diameter is powerful. A door you can't get through? Place it in a crack, a castle wall you need to climb, climb the tree, an enemy on a bridge, pushes the enemy off (did this to giants over a lava bridge once). A flying creature you can't seem to get, hold an action till it dives, catch it in a tree. There are countless ways to use this relatively cheep magic item to take advantage of a situation. Best magic item ever!

The benefit of the rod of absorption or the Staff of the Magi is that you can only be countered if you have used your reaction.
    I cast disintegrate
Wizard casts counterspell at 6th lvl
I trigger the rod of absorption gaining 6 charges...and disintegrate the wizard.

My DM was rolling loot tables, and my paladin got a Staff of the Magi at level 7. Kinda sat on it a while because i was a new player, didn't think a paladin would use a staff. Then my paladin died, and i rolled up a wizard, and one of my other party members saved it for me. My wizard had god rolled stats, and arguably the strongest item in the game for him. Absolutely love that staff, said wizard still has it and he's level 16 now, basically a bossfight in and of himself. Also wound up getting his hands on a Tome of Clear thought, boosting his Intelligence to 22 which definitely helped.
