Dude. Ive always just homebrewed magic items in the past, but having recently completed a year long Curse of Strahd campaign I was thinking of just using the wotc magic items for my next campaign. This video has convinced me. Amazing work and a heap of effort put in. Really appreciate it
I remember when 'The Deck' had hundreds of cards, you could buy an entire box of random cards, was probably 2nd Ed., maybe 3rd, haven't played since the early 90's, but this was a trip down memory lane. I subbed.

Really good job! I bet that was a ton of work. Amazing reference. Just one pretty major issue that may change your campaigns as well. I’m pretty certain the ring of spell storing can store more than one spell at a time. Like a 3rd and a 2nd, five level 1’s, etc. Have a good one.
Speaking of DM’s giving certain bonuses to players with high INT scores, I had a player Wizard that had a 20 intelligence score and the linguist feat, she came across some Sylvan signs in a forest, and she didn’t speak Sylvan but did happen to speak Elven, so since her INT was so high and she was a linguist, I ruled that she was able to roughly decipher the Sylvan runes, and it’s fortunate she was able to, because it was a warning that those areas of the woods were protected by the Fey and off limits to outsiders.

One home brew item I made that was well received was the time of fighting which allows a person to gain a fighting style of your choosing. It may also include proficiency in certain weapons or armor.
Thank you for this. I love peppering my players with small but functional magic items, the joy that washes over their faces when they finally save up enough gold to buy a new shiny magic item, or find a small utility magic item in a loot hoard is fantastic.

I am using a Portable Hole in our current campaign. A villain has the hole set up like a cellar & warehouse, with a 4’ platform/stairway, a small collection of barrels, crates, casks, bottles, shelving, misc. supplies, equipment, preserved food, etc., and a small desk/chair in the center. A nice little boon for a party that captures it.
Illusionist's Bracers are crazy powerful. Especially on a Warlock. And a Bladesinger 6/Warlock X would get a weapon attack on top of that. Great list ... there are a few items in there I'll need to add into my games. My favorite item to give is the Immovable Rod ... it is so versatile, people find the most interesting, useful, and humorous uses for it.
something to note about the dwarven thrower, both thiefs and artificers can attune to it even if theyre not dwarves. also, if you roll random loot and get a dwarven thrower but dont have any dwarves, or a dwarf in your party cant use it, then you should consider adding the ability for a dwarf to attune an item to someone for them, it makes the situation not suck for whoever gets the thrower, and adds some cool moments of either a cool tracking quest, or a moment of bonding between two characters.
I'm a trickester rogue who is the face of the party, instead of points in intelligence I just pumped my charisma and wore a headband of intellect (my shadow weapon makes a bow, bracers archery were a must)
Maybe not top 10, but for me personally, my favorite and most game breaking item is Quall's Feather Token Tree. DMs who have played with me for a while now ban me from having it cause I can break almost any encounter with one. Instant 60 foot Oak tree, 30 ft diameter is powerful. A door you can't get through? Place it in a crack, a castle wall you need to climb, climb the tree, an enemy on a bridge, pushes the enemy off (did this to giants over a lava bridge once). A flying creature you can't seem to get, hold an action till it dives, catch it in a tree. There are countless ways to use this relatively cheep magic item to take advantage of a situation. Best magic item ever!
I used the potion of speed to save my party from a TPK. I bought it from a potion merchant at a steep price to keep it in my back pocket at the right moment. Let me set the scene: We’re in a massive war within the drowned forest of saltmarsh. Enemies forces include 300~ twig blights 75~ treants 5 water elementals and a dryad possessed by Zuggtmoy. Out forces include 100~ bullywugs, 5 bullywug knights, 1 bullywug royal, a vrock and 5 level 4 party members. Yes, we were level 4 and fighting all that. The campaign has been running for 3 years so while we don’t build levels quickly we build wealth and allies. Anyway we’re in the weeds on this fight, thanks to Zuggtmoy our troops were becoming zombies once dead and our most annoying party member was being mind controlled. Party is scattered, fighting their own battles and our exit strategy of using the last charge in my helm of teleportation wasn’t looking viable. Seeing Zugg low and running away so her army can deal with us I said “Fuck it”, I drank the potion of speed, sped over to the biggest group of bullywugs in range and teleported us to the fleeing bitch. Due to the nature of the special initiative we were running for this war, the DM ruled that we would roll off for a smaller initiative to see who got to act first. Zugg or the bullywugs. She rolls an 18. Hope is almost lost until I roll a natural 20. We gank the evil god, steal her necklace and with just 1-2 rounds before the party was going to die I sped over with my 180ft movement speed to seal the rift to Zuggtmoy’s dimension, cutting off her magic and stopping the army. My butt was never more clenched than it was in this fight.
Sorry. Just adding a little note. Ring of Spell Storing can hold more than 1 spell. It essentially comes with 5 slots and for every level your spell is it takes a slot. So a level 3 fireball takes 3 slots and leaves 2 slots open for either 2 1st level spells or 1 2nd level spell.
When i first introduced dnd to my cousin he made a character that was a fighter who liked doing backflips(and other things to derail the story) but this was at the start of the campaign, he wanted to do a backflip so per usual i had him roll Acrobatics, well he rolled a nat 1 and broke his neck and died ,that was a good moment to teach all my new players how to do medicine checks. I had fun doing what i called my pc's session 0.5 i just wanted to get them on the boat for the starter dragon island campaign and it turned into a pirate/royalty story
That is very true. However.... being a mage who can cast the next level of spells is also a huge game changer. In my old group 30 years ago.....I was always of the mental classes. Mage, cleric, psionicist and combination of those. We were allowed to "research" powers and spells. Designing a higher level spell was so incredible. Ex: 4th level variant of Fireball with more damage, volume and range ...OR... 5th level variant of Fly with faster speed, longer effect, AC bonus during flight vs missiles. I played a character who was a necromancer and researched the gaseous form of the vampire, 3rd level. Game changer.
me having 2 party members with a cloak of displacement and 2 of them with cloak of protection at level 10 - also also there are those tasha items that give spellcasters +1 to attack AND DC and everyone has one of those because they are uncommon -- Ah I started as a Noob Dm doing my own world - true my monster are much tougher than MM but still about session 40 I realised that i can throw my 600 HP abomination at them and they would most likely win... love this vid
Re: ammunition, Just give them a +1 quiver of perfect arrows - this quiver magically alters every arrow that enters it giving perfect balance, hardness and weight to always make a perfect shot given the range, draw strength of the bow, and armour type of the target. All arrows pulled from this quiver gain +1 to damage and overcome damage resistances. Requires attunment
If your old school, you can easily dm homebrew a magic weapon property that deals an extra 1d4 whatever energy type damage and is a + whatever weapon. This would make them slightly more deadly while giving a lot of rp potential for the weapon. Also name your iteams. A flaming +2 spear is fine but Gwenfire the balrog slayer makes your players happy.
About #86 i would rule that darkvision works more like low light vision from 3.5 and that the true underground creatures have infra-red vision. The goggles would give you a color accurate view in true darkness letting you read in complete darkness.
One time a DM gave me a version of Picard's Flute. Play it for +2 buffs but roll a 1 and you pass out for 15min and come back with a lifetime of new memories
The plus three ammo limit is because the ranged people using it can already use +X bows, if you bring in leveled ammo on top of leveled bows, you just have Skyrim stealth archers all over again
First, the want of magic missles does not require attenement. Significant omissions in my view include: Cube of Force, Wave (the trident), BlackRazor (the sword), Robe of stars, Instruments of the bard,, Amulets of the Devout, Bloodweel vials and their various analogs for wizards and bards, (I'm assuming you don't count any ravnika items based on your comments or I'd add missium apratus and illusionist's bracer),
For cloak of elven mind, my friend ran a one shot where we could take one uncommon magic item with us. My halfling rogue brought a cloak of elven mind and reasoned it as being part of his department in a news reporter position of which is all about espionage and losing the feds if you get into hot water. I managed to sneak my way to the dragon and shadow of the colossus that thing like I am a savage. Lead us to killing the dragon due to that stealth
Great example of how to make the Arrows of Slaying useful: run Princes of the Apocalypse, and have the players start by fighting the Air Cult, and have them be making a lot of Arrows of Slaying for the other three cults, especially Earth (because Air hates them) and some Fire (because they're the objectively strongest). Then continue to show these arrows being made and used by the other three cults, though less often because they're more Air's kinda shtick. And then when the party gets into the bottom layer of the old fortress, they start finding ancient dwarven arrows (or quarrels more likely; Earth or Water can already be using these to introduce the concept), and these are accompanied by dwarvish writing which identify them as having been crafted to fight the battle they eventually lost against the cult which was taking their temple over... but NONE of these arrows are element-specific, because they were made to kill Aberrations and priests of Tharizdun, foreshadowing the real architect behind all these elemental cults.
I had a cloak of protection in a recent campaign. My DM allowed me to have a cloak of billowing and many fashions (at a *steep* price). I gave the cloak of displacement to the fighter, I did not need that old thing anymore.
This video was awesome, one thing i disagree with though was item vasatility, in my opinion, only paladins being able to attune to a holy avenger makes the experience of finding it that much cooler, but ig i can see why you did it, itd sure suck to find one with no paladin in the party
if your lucky and a artificer can eventually use all the items with no restrictions. That being said I am trying to make a hoopeck battle smith artificer work and holp one day to make the hoopeck in to a legendary item.
1:20:38 I would make it a ranger feature that you can craft one of these every year and when crafting you can choose what it’s for (except human, bc world building)
I keep giving the Immovable Rod to different groups and they all forget that it exists. I literally have not seen it get used once, but I love it anyway.
Old school 1 and 2nd edition player (I did playtest 3rd at Gencon), but i enjoyed the list and the 5th edition perspective. I would rate portable hole in top 10 for long term campaign use as (in 1-2nd edition at least) is can carry so much (until someone drops a bag of holding in). No magic stores back in 2nd edition but it there were this item, would beat most.
Fun thought for the Ring of Feather Falling: if your player jumps out a window that's 200 feet up, then after he's fallen about 80 feet, have him suddenly enter a little 20-foot-radius Antimagic Field that's just randomly there in midair and nobody knew about it. So the player just goes float, float, float, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, and then back to floating. A wonderful harmless way of reminding mr. Lighter than Air that nothing an adventurer does is ever *completely* safe.
I'm kind of surprised that the Serpent Scale Armor didn't make the list. Scale Mail with no stealth penalty that also lets you use your full dex bonus? As someone who usually plays dex built characters, I'll take that any day.
I TOTALLY CALLED IT! I was so surprised that after 100 items the Deck of Many Things was never mentioned. Such a fun item. Also, what are your thoughts on giving players something like a Vorpal Spoon?
I am not sure where i found it but there is a rule on recovering amunition were you recover half +1 of your used amunition. But I think the real issue is you can double dip getting a magic bow and magic arrows. I have been know to give out scroll effect in an arrows the first people hink about is fire ball or magic missile but an intsting one is healing stones.
37:40 The portable hole reminds me of the ones from ACME, those made temporary holes instead of connecting to an extra dimensional space, you could go through them or fall inside them, like falling into an open manhole. If this item worked like that, we could make a lot of road-runner-like shennanigans.😂
There is 1 very strong item that i believed you would mention, its shield guardian amulet, for rare rarity its literally infinit rage of totem bear barbarian
The Scimitar of Speed is good until you realise you can start the game with a nonmagical weapon that allows a second attack as a bonus action if you use a double-bladed scimitar.
Crazy idea. Miquella was stolen when he was asleep no? And corrupted while asleep. I would posit that st. Trina and miquella are distinct and have free will independent of each other, in the same way that Marika and radagon are. I think st Trina was the being that was corrupted by mohgs bloodflame, and the reason for her disappearance was her essentially being twisted in to messmer
Note to self Pocket Hole Wand of Magic Missiles Archery Handbraces Dwarfkind Belt Arrow of Slaying {Specific Monster} Life jailer weapon that can contain amy one enemy Necklace of Fireball (consume a bead every use) Pearl of Power (Restore single spellslot) Weaker Wand of Polymorph Instant fortress (for settleing down)
I know this is old, but MIZZIUM ARMOR (rare) is better than ADAMANTINE ARMOR (Uncommon). Has the same no crit hit benefits + "when you are subjected to a magical effect that allows you to make a Strength or Constitution saving throw to take only half damage, you instead take no damage if you succeed on the saving throw". Add SHIELD MASTER feat for the Dex Save :) NO ATTUNEMENT
@@leerubin4303 well you said mizzium is rare and adamantine is uncommon, bro said at the start of the video he was only noting common to uncommon items
@@Traybobo Have you watched the video. Dwarven Armor. +2 Armor (VERY rare), Plate Armor of Etherealness is LEGENDARY. Now that section may be uncommon, but it really should be mentioned. It is not as well known.
So many new Dungeon master complain about high AC without knowing that high AC is easy to circumvent Oh you build a character who with a full plate +3 shield +3 ring of protection +3, cloak of protection +3 a shield guardian around near by giving you +2 the haste spell giving you +2 and just in case you can cast the shield spell for an other +5? and you want to challenge me to kill you? you think you are invincible with your 41 AC? what is your wisdom saving throw? -1? cool dominate person, you are no your allies problem and work for me. Oh you have a good wisdom as well? ok fine, how is your dexterity? Disintegrate. How about Enfeeblemind or intellect devrourer? how humiliating would it be to die to a CR2 creature? targeting your intellect and making you brain dead? or a ghost possession targeting your Charisma? And if somehow you are a paladin with +5 charisma that is added on everything, what happen if I cast maze on you? that uses an intellect skill check, not a saving throw. or maybe I could simply wall of force you alone on your side of the battlefield while you watch the monster slaughter your friends? Remember, players found ways to defeat creatures with 600 HP, 25 AC and legendary resistance. Remember EVERY decision you do in DnD come with it's OPPORTUNITY cost. You took the defensive fighting style to get +1 AC while wearing armor, cool, so you didn't took the fighting style that increase your damage? oh you took the feat that give you an additional fighting style? cool, so you didn't took GWM, PAM or bump your main stat to 20? Oh you are using a belt of giant strenght to get 24 strenght? twell, between the ring, the cloak and the giant belt, you didn't took that blackrazor or luckblade I guess. Oh you multiclass Artificer for the additional attunement slot? so not only did you need to bump up your dump stat to 13, you also loss your martial progression (less fighter feat for example) you only have half spell progression compare to if you had multiclass bard for a full progression, etc... Every choice you made mean you didn't took an other choice instead creating a weakness to counter the strenght you gained. My Sorcerer who start with 14 Cha+2 racial bonus to 16 choose to take +2 Cha at level 4 and 8 instead of fey touched at level 4, But he got 2 extra point buy point to get to 13 Intellect so he can multiclass into wizard for portent compare to the sorcerer who took 15 Cha, +2 racial and took fey touched at level 4 in order to reach the same 20 Charisma at level 8. But which is better, the sorcerer with 2 extra spell or the sorcerer who was able to multiclass 2 level of wizard, giving him 8 additional spell, and the portent ability?
I know this is an old video but I GOTTA step in here and say that the Ring of Mind Shielding does NOT let you lie under a zone of truth. "You are immune to magic that allows other creatures to determine whether you are lying" would not stop an effect that forces you not to lie. Jeremy Crawford himself stated that they have no effect on each other as well, which is pretty decisive. Obviously it'd be fine if you allow this as a DM, but flat out saying that that is how it works is very misleading.

The ring of 5 shield spells, as some folks use it.

Or better than 5 shield spells, how about using it to have non-casters (or even possibly familiars) cast concentration spells.

then you should consider adding the ability for a dwarf to attune an item to someone for them, it makes the situation not suck
for whoever gets the thrower, and adds some cool moments of either a cool tracking quest, or a moment of bonding between two characters.
"Looks like I'm gonna have to jump!" - is the catchphrase of Dangeresque as well as anyone with a Ring of Feather Fall.
Watching this makes me want to go do another BG3 or DOS run
I'm a trickester rogue who is the face of the party, instead of points in intelligence I just pumped my charisma and wore a headband of intellect
(my shadow weapon makes a bow, bracers archery were a must)
This video must be the most detailed, best put togeather piece of content about DnD items i've seen
I love how the amulet of the planes looks like a Stargate.
I used the potion of speed to save my party from a TPK. I bought it from a potion merchant at a steep price to keep it in my back pocket at the right moment.
Let me set the scene:
We’re in a massive war within the drowned forest of saltmarsh.
Thank you so much for this if you ever see this comment was struggling to think of items for my adventures
Excellent Work! Really inspiring my artificer in my current game!
I always loved the ring of spell turning
Going from level 4 to 5 feels very good, but going from level 1 to 2 doubles your power and shifts the game from survival horror to an adventure.
Thank you for the hard work you put into this. It’s amazing subscribed for sure
me having 2 party members with a cloak of displacement and 2 of them with cloak of protection at level 10 - also also there are those tasha items that give spellcasters +1 to attack AND DC and everyone has one of those because they are uncommon -- Ah I started as a Noob Dm doing my own world - true my monster are much tougher than MM but still about session 40 I realised that i can throw my 600 HP abomination at them and they would most likely win... love this vid
This is awesome! Been a Dungeons & Dragons fan since I was in high school! Keep it up! New subscriber here! ❤
One time a DM gave me a version of Picard's Flute. Play it for +2 buffs but roll a 1 and you pass out for 15min and come back with a lifetime of new memories
Awesome video :D very helpful
So good I really appreciate you making this video OneNote though I don't think the wand of magic missiles requires an Attunement slot😬awesome video
The plus three ammo limit is because the ranged people using it can already use +X bows, if you bring in leveled ammo on top of leveled bows, you just have Skyrim stealth archers all over again
What a great video, man! Congrats!
VERY ambitious video. Youve got yourself a subscriber! Good job!
I really want to see worst/weirdest 100/50 items as well
I love how I was about to complain how there was no deck of many things from 1 to 100, and then boom item #0
Deck of Hazards my beloved
What a great video! It’s very informative and I learned quite a bit of knowledge on new items for DND Games! Thank you!
Mace of terror with a oath of paladin is incredible
I need this as a list to start including these in my games
16,9k now. This is awesome content.
Great video man
Sad to not see one of my favorites on the list- The Sun Blade. But i get it
Great example of how to make the Arrows of Slaying useful: run Princes of the Apocalypse, and have the players start by fighting the Air Cult, and have them be making a lot of Arrows of Slaying for the other three cults, especially Earth (because Air hates them) and some Fire (because they're the objectively strongest).
0/10, Cloak of Billowing not in the top 10. Style matters! Haha
I had a cloak of protection in a recent campaign. My DM allowed me to have a cloak of billowing and many fashions (at a *steep* price). I gave the cloak of displacement to the fighter, I did not need that old thing anymore.
@@Big_Pants_ four cloaks... Vax'ildan, is that you?
The Fizban's items are the absolute God-tier of magic items.
Anti magic spell cast on an powerful relic right on the other side of the wall in the vault
Player falls by vault room aaaaahhhhh
This list makes me want to DM again. I wish I had the time.
Gave my players a Vorpal Butterknife once. It was great fun. 11/10. Would have them risk it all against a Red Dragon with it again
I would have added the Ring of Regeneration and Periapt of Wound Closure somewhere on the list.
Great job! Great content! Not sold on the ranking for the ring of invisibility though!
#76 the ring of spell storing with the spell Hellish Rebuke
what the horns that summon the berserker are not on the list?
This is so nice. Thank you
Note to self
Pocket Hole
Wand of Magic Missiles
Archery Handbraces
Dwarfkind Belt
Arrow of Slaying {Specific Monster}
Life jailer weapon that can contain amy one enemy
Necklace of Fireball (consume a bead every use)
Pearl of Power (Restore single spellslot)
Weaker Wand of Polymorph
Instant fortress (for settleing down)
My favorite item ever was the ring of the Phoenix and yes I was killed by fire while wearing it. Even better 😊
He said he was noting the BASIC items at the start
@@Traybobo So how is mizzium less basic than Adamantine? Have Fun.
So many new Dungeon master complain about high AC without knowing that high AC is easy to circumvent
Oh you build a character who with a full plate +3 shield +3 ring of protection +3, cloak of protection +3 a shield guardian around near by giving you +2 the haste spell giving you +2 and just in case you can cast the shield spell for an other +5? and you want to challenge me to kill you? you think you are invincible with your 41 AC? what is your wisdom saving throw? -1? cool dominate person, you are no your allies problem and work for me.
Honestly I am surprised the ring of resistance a couple of similar items, and the manuals weren't on this list.
9:19 when you have repeating shot on a crossbow LOL
I know this is an old video but I GOTTA step in here and say that the Ring of Mind Shielding does NOT let you lie under a zone of truth. "You are immune to magic that allows other creatures to determine whether you are lying" would not stop an effect that forces you not to lie. Jeremy Crawford himself stated that they have no effect on each other as well, which is pretty decisive. Obviously it'd be fine if you allow this as a DM, but flat out saying that that is how it works is very misleading.
