David Williss I’ve binged 10 episodes in 3 days. I’m going through a rough patch and anytime there’s an obstacle in my way Matt makes me a roll ‘perseverance’ check. I always roll well and keep going.
Nott: "should we follow them outside and kill them?" Molly: "that doesn't seem very nice" Molly 2 seconds later: "Should we follow them outside and _rob_ them?"
I was at a Renaissance fair where someone cosplayed as Jester, she looked so great. She gave me a flyer of the Traveler and I had to explain to my friends why I was so incredibly happy!!!
Tyler Durham to note i didn't say he would remember perfectly, but i would assume with eidetic memory even after the exact details fade the basic memory is burned in there for life or at least a few decades.
Fjord and Beau being the dad and mom of the group teaching their goblin daughter how to swim while dirty socially awkward Uncle Caleb submerges himself to get out of a conversation is so adorable
I imagine Caleb more like a single dad of Nott and everyone else are his friends that get called "Aunt" or "Uncle". Same vibe, though. Big happy family.
I met Matt yesterday at the Lexington Comic Con and he is just the sweetest person. I told him "Pumat Soul gives me life" and he did the voice. It was awesome.
Sara - lucky you , I'm jealous I was in the over 300 people waiting to see him. I did get to "see" him as the dark-curly-haired young man told me I was out of luck, being in a wheelchair I had very limited view. Next time.
@X.david man I'm sorry you didn't get to meet him :( tho I'm sure he will be back next year. Hell with the reception he got the entire cast might come with him!
This is just low level vs high level and system vs system. Vic Machina where mid level when campaign 1 stream started, so the threat is bigger the enemies bigger and the characters have become more sensible. They had suffered the first death (off screen) and so had been brought down to earth. Also campaign one started as a pathfinder game, by definition fat is a far more rules heavy system and so tends to be a little drier and more serious. So I think what we are seeing is probably some of how campaign 1 started ore stream, and also the impact for freeer flowing rules.
My group: Has to be told to explain what their character is doing every time. Critical Role: RPs a whole group bath scene with next to nothing said by the DM.
It usually helps if at least one, or two people have a small history in theater, or acting, or are just into RPing. My group, sure, go off on tangents, but me snd one other person are Role Play comfortable, and the rest of the group usually follows along with us, mostly because WE interact with them first. :)
I KNOW. I’ll be watching them act out a scene without a problem and then I’ll try to roleplay and just be like: “U-ummm......y-yeah.....can I have t-this? Please? No? O-okay.....”
I'm excited for the possibility of bad guys making entire decisions based on the assumption that there are nine of them, like they get kidnapped and it's like "where's the rest?" "Rest of what" "your group" "OH"
Similar to how whwn the United States created the Navy Seals, they named the team Seal Team Six, to confuse the Soviets as to how many of those units we had.
Yasha is running in the forests somewhere being an animal or something, frumpkin is 8 so whoever he is, and the neinth is jesters duplicate, but yes they would def be worries about 3 more adventurers instead of one adventurer, a car 'cat' and a magic casting illusory duplicate
I imagine it's like an older sibling watching their younger sister, in this case, setting something stupid up that is guaranteed to end poorly, but instead of stopping them, they decide to let them learn on their own.
I like to imagine Jester is just skipping around town wearing a floral dress and covered in bows and pretty things plus a massive shield and axe in her hands.
Between the setting and the general level of technology/culture, I've always imagined her shield as something between a classic viking shield and a targe without the spike; and the axe like the steel war axe from Skyrim. But she would definitely paint the shield something incredibly barbie as soon as she got it, and covered the haft of the axe in matching ribbons. Maybe put in a hole at the bottom for a lanyard that she could hang little charms and beads from. I wish her gear showed up more in the fanart. She's the second strongest party member and wears the heaviest armor, hence being canonically described as visibly muscled
Spoilers: ..... ...... I wanted to know if The Traveler was a god in 5e so I looked it up and oh my god, that's inspired and the way Laura roleplays Jester is so perfect.
@@parker2121 I think the best part about it is that, yes she is the second strongest, but somehow whether it's the "cute dress" or her build/frame or however it's happening no one can tell that she's so strong until she does something that looks ridiculous like throw someone over her shoulder, or lift something they would normally ask Yasha to do and everyone suddenly remembers "Oh, right...Jester is ripped..." Being constantly underestimated (Probably deliberately, because lets be real, it's Jester) is pretty much perfect for a Trickster Cleric.
Every time I get a like on this I feel this strong urge to drop a huge spoiler about bathhouses. There aren't 2 bathhouse episodes, their life is basically spent in a bath house

"This was an idea you had?" "It was given to me by a wise weirdo." Sam's delivery of this line is perfect, it's so charming. Taliesin looks genuinely chuffed to have been called that. I love this trio so much.
I think it goes unappreciated that Calebs gesture is probably indicative of his own self image. Jester would have no possible understanding of what it would have been like to grow up poor and hungry but in her naivety she insulted him and in one simple gesture, he shows her just how she, and others like her, have always made him feel. Such an awesome character moment from the two of them, its insane that all of this happens so organically.
Nott admits she can't swim. Fjord: We could teach you, there's very little risk. Molly: My father just threw me right in, that's how I learnt. Fjord, staring at Molly: *We're* *not* *going* *to* *do* *that* *though* .
So true.. more irritated and the cool move from Ashley "yeah" is so badass xD... love it so much.. also how excited Marisha plays the scene.. I can relate damn it xD
Everything about Jester is deceptive. She's always drawn as tiny with little musculature in all the art despite having the second highest strength in the group. Meanwhile, Fjord has the typical half-orc muscle definition despite very much not being the strongest
@@caseybaker7935 thats what i dont get why is jest so strong and how do almost none of them have stats below 10 did they do some other stat making then in the ph or something because im a half ork barbarian and i only have 16 strength (level 2) but i dont know if i have the extra 2 strength for being a half ork though
@@BobBob-pj3qo I'm not entirely sure, but they might have used point-buy or 4d6 drop lowest. I'm pretty sure Nott has like a -3 in Charisma or something. Jester's the second strongest because Clerics are unreasonably tanky in 5e and Strength is pretty much their second most important stat after Wisdom

Was I the only one who felt super sad when Jester was waiting for her delivery to be said that it never arrived? I knew Matt wouldn't drop thousands of gold coins on the party just like that, but that scene felt so... lonely. Because she was trying to maintain some standing, she was out of her normal silly self and for the first time, it was like we saw the lonely little girl she is without the Traveler and her companions.
I was more sad when Caleb stormed off, smearing mud all over himself to remind himself of his place in the world, after that conversation with a spoiled brat who viewed several years of his parents' wages as a daily allowance. And I love Jester, but that scene resonated with me the most.
That made sense to you??? Wow, the world outside america is a scary place if that nonsense made sense... I vaguely understood half of those phrases as slightly valger nudity jokes and general vague insults.
Oh my god, Caleb was literally prepared to use the friends spell to calm Nott down after she’d been confronted by her hydrophobia-that could make her doubt her friends’ good intentions. It’s a great example of how someone might use magic to help you manage your personal terrors. What an act of love.
@Someone's Mom Close. Hydrophobia is the fear of water, and was the historic name for rabies because one of the symptoms of rabies is an *extreme* fear of water. Like, fear of drinking level fear.
@@RedOnion4175 yes! Kinda makes you realise just how in-character he was for the whole of C1, like he WAS Grog and now he's totally different. I think Liam pulls off a similar feat with Caleb, like he's so in character it's hard to tell when he's being Caleb or Liam. And maybe Laura too, but Jester is basically unfiltered Laura anyway so not as hard lol
[c1 spoilers below] @@helplmchoking Laura's probably at the top of the list though. There was some emotional scene in c1 (Percy's resurrection? Scanlan's leaving? Don't remember but somewhere late in Chroma arc) and she needed to break character and talk as Laura at some point and the mood switch was downright uncanny. A genuine Jekyll/Hyde moment right there. Though really, you only see how in-character someone is only when they break it and I don't think that happened to Travis since Orion left.
Yeah, it's your turn! 0-0 I remember the "Swedish" LootCrate commercial like it was yesterday.... And one day, so shall you.
I have the feeling that Caleb is looking over 4 kids, and Molly's just standing a bit to the side pouring oil into the flame while Caleb asked for water
So at around 33 minutes in, are we not gonna mention Sam's absolute gargantuan flask? That titanic slab of hollow steel? The absolute mass of that monolithic booze receptacle must be astonishing, I'm dumbfounded by the magnitude of the thing. Simply marvellous
@@FinnTheBard As of episode 70 it looks as though it has the capacity of a fuel can, I've seen concrete mixers that hold less. You could tape this thing over your chest and have an effective bulletproof vest. It's beautiful
I, too, was expecting a bit more. something along the lines of "...but there are only six of you? That you can SEE.", or I am sure Sam, most likely, will come up with something Special
That scene with Caleb smearing mud over his face after arguing about money with Jester. That hurt. So many feelings in that single moment. A high contrast between the lonely tiefling girl who's only show of love is through her mother's allowance and the neurotic wizard who's comfort in filth to avoid attention is also a symbol of what he believes his place in the world was and probably still is...
Jester's mother is actually very involved and supportive. Jester is just young and never encountered real life and was raised in circumstances where money was never a problem.
@@ZetHololo agreed, the idea being that she sees life as simple because of money and likely didn't have to think about those that might not have it. Then there's Caleb who's got a very good reason to stay hidden and basically be faceless.
That's really not true, though. Jester's relationship with her mother is absolutely not based merely on her allowance. There's genuine love and connection there. Marion inadvertently kept Jester isolated as a consequence of her own agoraphobia, but Jester didn't grow up starved for love at all.
"I just have things that I have to do sometimes," Yasha says. This is the moment I finally realized that an aasimar was a perfect RP choice for a player who has to disappear for long stretches. After all, her angelic guide keeps giving her visions and guidance that demand particular courses of action, even when they're inconvenient or hard to understand, so she'd be torn away to blaze her own path on her own quests. I almost wish her aasimar identity hadn't been spoiled by the on-screen character panel in the first episode, because that would have been a good story reveal.
@@MadameTeqi It isn't. The OP is just saying that the character race of Ashley's character is perfect for Ashley, who has to be away a lot. The race of Yasha is displayed on screen super often, even in the first episode. I think OP is just making connections and saying it was a perfect choice on Matt and Ashley's end. (I assume Matt helped with character creation, but I could be wrong.) I hope I explained that well.
She does have the perfect reason for disappearing off for long stretches, but it’s not an Aasimar thing? Her backstory absolutely relates and explains it, but it’s nothing to do with an angel guide (sort of the opposite) and I won’t say more Bc spoilers, but, basically this is the right train of thought, wrong character detail to pin it on
We've noticed that Laura and Sam make a wonderful duo from the very beginning of this campaign, but I have to say I've also been noticing some great vibing between Travis and Marisha. I love how much they appreciate each other's humor and how well they react to each other's roleplaying. It's interesting how much difference we're seeing not only because of the new characters, but also because of the new seating.
@@betweenthe8 you know Marisha is married to Matt, and Laura is married to Travis...? Right? If she can literally do it with her husband(bf in the first campaign, but still) it isn't that bad, just friendly and clearly not sexual? You might just be over sencetive to people playing their characters well and actually acting it out lol, what's the issue here? People being friendly and acting well?
I mean, it was two days ago at this point that she even sent the letter, which had to travel several hundred miles, also she chose the cheapest option to send it (so definitely no express), and if her mother decided to send her money, well, it'd probably take several more days to reach Zadash
@@elbruces I'd say that highly depends on the DM as well as the players. A quality of a reasonable DM literally should be that he can be reasoned with - what kind of game are you and your players looking for? If for example it's just a fun, upbeat game, that probably won't last for a very long time- why not have one of your players be genuinely rich? It can lead to some genuinely funny roleplay! And even in a case like this- why not? You granted them this backstory element, why not let them use it? Don't punish your players for making a decision that you had a say in! In the end, there are enough ways to balance everything out if something feels unfit to you.
@@rb4121 A lot of the rules have to do with game balance, and Matt seems to go by those. At least it seems to be a concern in his campaigns. I guess you could have a campaign where any character can write in any number they want next to gp, but that would be pretty far from the way D&D is normally played, and would probably work better under a different rpg system anyways, like Fiasco.
@@rb4121 It depend on dm and how a player tend to spend it that much is true however it can take a lot from the experience. For example in this campaign: you can purchase without effort broken items especially with Pumat nearby, get complacent and just enjoy the life given to you as such some challenges and hooks wouldn't work. If you get a murder hobo party that spend all their gold on booze anyway and just enjoy killing things without taking care of their weapons, sure why not, other than that it should always be a strait NO.
Jester's relationship with the Traveller is like a child speaking to her favourite adult friend. Like your mums best friend who you've always called Auntie or Uncle. It's so adorable
Definitelly an uncle. One that sometimes enjoys playing tricks as evidenced by that one time he made Jester think Beau was infected by the fantasy zombs.
I'm sure this will be buried but I have to say that my heart absolutely melted for Jester when she was alone in that inn room. I have been looking at some commentary and someone pointed out that Jester mentioned that her mom didn't really pay that much attention to her. Not abusive per se, but obviously neglectful, which is a form of abuse in a way. It's clear Jester never really had much of a childhood and because of it never truly grew up. As silly as she might seem, there is some real damage hiding under there. She is terrified of being alone, especially in that nice inn because it reminded her of being alone in opulence. She is lonely. Her new friends make her obviously much happier, which is clearly healthy for her, but she still can't stand to be alone. It makes sense that she would reach out for someone like the Traveler. He was clearly her first friend that she felt a kinship with. No doubt the Traveler has plans for her and expectations to cause chaos, but he clearly has at least some level of care for her well being, enough to assure her that she is with friends. Jester wants to feel wanted, and feel loved. She reminds me of Tary in that regard, bathed in luxury, but starved for affection, unaware of the suffering of others and how her privilege and easy money in her life may make others bitter. Mentally and physically she may be an adult, but emotionally she is still a vulnerable child.
Isn't it beautiful the way this game, this campaign, this adventure, makes you really care so deeply about the characters? Like when Nott gave Caleb the bag of Shakaste's gold and said, "Here's some book money for you..." That was such a beautiful and loving moment that felt so genuine, or when the group tried to teach Nott how to swim. I know there's more stuff coming up in future episodes, and I can't wait to get to it.
A Campaign can really show you a deep backstory with well developed characters, or it can be filled with Murder Hobos my local area is mostly the latter
My theory is that the Traveller is Artagan (or however it's spelled) from the first campaign. Remember Vox Machina were going to help him open a gate to the Feywild once they'd finished wrecking Vecna?

Laura is my favorite female voice actor so when I decided to give this series a shot and saw she was one of the players I was absolutely ecstatic! Liam and Travis are in my top five for male voice actors as well. Wasn't familiar with any of the others' work before watching (though was aware of Ashley being Elie in The Last of Us), but watching this has me definitely wanting to look into what Taliesin has been in. 🥰

Not saying Jester is a copycat or anything but... "okay okay okay" = Pike/Ashley "..., you guys!" = Keyleth "technically ..., technically." is a Jester original
Ellie Ginnow as often as people get God and religion wrong, it’s rare to see folks who show the personal relationship part at all much less half decently.
The relationship feels like a platonic relationship. Maybe that just me, but it feels like the traveler guides and cares for Jester. Almost like a friend would...
Κωνσταντινος Αλιραι it doesn’t live on fjords sword. It’s kinda like a god granting strength through a holy symbol, it’s just giving him part of its power in the form of arcane potential and a magical blade. The creature itself is probably in its own plane or somewhere deep in an ocean
Her prayer to the traveler makes a lot more sense after that. She thinks “he’ll” leave her because she has friends now, and doesn’t need an “imaginary friend”. Idk just what i picked up, first time watching this campaign.
Can't be understated that you all have outdone yourselves for this new campaign. The bar was set unfairly high by the end of Vox Machina's journey but the Mighty Nein are proving to be just as compelling. I always thought Vexalia was a great character but Laura's been on some next level shit with Jester. Seriously my favorite character so far. I'm a bit disappointed that they got through the entire bath house scene without anyone pointing out how freaking RIPPED she must be under that dress. Nott the Brave is simply adorable, doesn't matter how low her CHA is, she'll always be as cute as a stolen button in my mind. It's funny that she gets treated like child yet as time goes on she feels like the closest thing to a matron in this group. Caleb's social awkwardness is very endearing and we still know so little about him. Beau's such a bro and a certified badass to boot. Fjord's intriguing for so many reasons not the least of which is whatever dark entity granted him these powers. Mollymauk's just a sweet guy, definitely feels like his circumstances are far darker than his bright personality. Super looking forward to more Yasha and her blase' approach to everything, every session with Ashley is a gift. Special thanks to all these amazing fan artists cuz wow guys. And now for the hard part, waiting on bated breath for the next episode to see if Matt finally kills any of these wonderful creations. Mercer have mercy!
The "kick kick kick"s was a nostalgia bomb for some few-decade-old memories of swimming lessons haha Edit: The "and-a-one, and-a-two, and-a-three" for the dunk!!!
I seriously LOVE the Traveler, deity or not, so far he is a wonderful piece of mystery and i love the theories about him. My Theory is, that he is a long forgotten god with no worshippers, maybe because of that close to fading into nothing, who answered a lone childs call to keep her company just for the sake of helping her but gained one single worshipper that way he now treasures.
Jenny Weiner YES, religion is such an important thing in this arc and having a party member worship a forgotten god and now trying to get more people to, at least, know him would be a fantastic element....and reason for chaos and trouble xD
Jenny Weiner that could be as well, but he could have killed Jester much sooner...so i bet he still needs her or at least needs her to get known more and by the right people.
I love jester so much it's kind of stupid. That, "I made that much like, every day for allowance." exchange was amazing. She comes off as whiny, then grating, then annoying, but somehow it all meshes into adorable.
Gotta remember that she grew up incredibly isolated, spent most of her time alone in her room, her only friend a chaotic deity of some sort. She's incredibly underdeveloped socially.
I love how much character development Beau gets. I was always disappointed by how little Keyleth got and how forced it often felt when she did, but Beau's growth even from the start is clear, natural, believable, and enjoyable to watch.
This campaign feels more polished, like they are all fully prepared to tell a personal story, they all have their own little secrets and backstory that everyone else isn’t aware of yet. It is like imaginary theater
Unpopular opinion, but Keyleth did not fit Marisha at all. The way she plays doesn’t line up with the person Keyleth is. (Ex. The nature-loving druid who values life destroying a clutch of innocent dragon eggs without a second thought and having literally no conflict over it after.) I like Beauregard much better, it feels like she’s having so much more fun with her interactions. Aside from the sun tree. That shit was hilarious.

This is just low level vs high level and system vs system. Vic Machina where mid level when campaign 1 stream started, so the threat is bigger the enemies bigger and the characters have become more sensible. They had suffered the first death (off screen) and so had been brought down to earth.

I like to imagine Jester is just skipping around town wearing a floral dress and covered in bows and pretty things plus a massive shield and axe in her hands.
Probably a cute buckler hanging off her pink backpack and a leather frog/sheath with a beautifully carved handle exposed.
@@Oguzalp97 public display of affection. They were always hugging, leaning on each other, and talking.
I like how Jester was like "My mom's gonna get me free money" and Matt was just like "Nah, go work for it."
I mean, it was two days ago at this point that she even sent the letter, which had to travel several hundred miles, also she chose the cheapest option to send it (so definitely no express), and if her mother decided to send her money, well, it'd probably take several more days to reach Zadash
@@rb4121 that and no reasonable DM would let you just pull free money from your backstory.

Laura as jester saying she gets grumpy when she's hungry, travis just nodding yes the entire time is the best XD
I agree with everything you say other than the traveler being bad. I think he is a neutral god
I think Jester will eventually multiclass into a paladin because of her connection with the traveler.
My theory is that the Traveller is Artagan (or however it's spelled) from the first campaign. Remember Vox Machina were going to help him open a gate to the Feywild once they'd finished wrecking Vecna?

My heart absolutely shattered for Jester and Caleb this episode. Liam and Laura are terribly good actors, it's magnificent.
Watching Travis watch her talk to the Traveler was so sweet. He's absolutely obsessed with her lol

*EXPLANATION OF INDIVIDUAL TERMS AND SLANG*
Butcher’s = butcher’s hook; cockney rhyming slang (CRS) for ‘look’ / gobbed = short for gob-smacked; impressed, taken aback / dog-and-bone = CRS for ‘phone’ / know my onions = basically just means you know it well / all mouth and no trousers = basically the same as ‘all bark and no bite’, it means you talk a lot but can’t actually back anything up / corker = something really cool, great / nick = get / blimey = short for blind me, literally just an expression, same as like ‘Dude!’ ‘Aw man’ ‘woah!’ etc. / skint = broke / tosh = doesn’t matter; BS / dog’s bollocks = awesome / minted = rich / get sorted = kind of difficult to explain, just means to get on okay with something, to sort something out okay / bent as a nine-bob note = shady, questionable (‘bob’ is a slang term for a shilling, an old currency used in the UK pre-1970s when the coinage was reformed; a nine-shilling note never existed - ‘bent’ in this case just means odd, faulty, broken, not right, shady etc.) / tickety-boo = can’t say I’ve ever actually heard this one before so I had to look it up, basically just means ‘working as intended, fine’ etc. / faff a dozy fortnight = mess around; procrastinate; waste time (faff = mess around, fortnight = two weeks) / right gutted = really upset, bummed out / Sweet Fanny Adams = just a general use exclamation, like ‘jesus Christ’ or ‘for the love of god’ (Sweet Fanny Adams was a kid that got brutally murdered in the 1800s iirc) / wag off = literally skip school, in this case I think Sam is understanding it to mean 'don't mess about', in the same way someone might say 'don't go and piss off' / jolly good chuffed = doesn’t really make sense lol but chuffed = really pleased, contented so jolly good chuffed just means basically the same as chuffed on its own / knackered = worn out / cream-crackered = CRS for knackered / Bedfordshire = bed (I’ve never heard anyone actually say this, I’m pretty sure it’s just a bad pun (Bedfordshire is a county in England))

David Umstattd But the Traveler is a real visible being.
The relationship feels like a platonic relationship. Maybe that just me, but it feels like the traveler guides and cares for Jester. Almost like a friend would...
That would make complete sense.
Why else would a God literally hold a mortal’s hand?
It's funny how hard Fjord is trying to include Caleb and fix whatever the hell Beau is.
Every time Jester lets her loneliness and doubt show it breaks my heart. My goodness Laura Bailey is a great actor.

There’s actually nine of them, Fjord, bo, Caleb, knott, jester, her duplicate, mollymok, frumpkin and yasha
Her duplicate is not a real person tho. I think the ninth is whatever lives on Fjord's sword. It technically travels with them
Κωνσταντινος Αλιραι it doesn’t live on fjords sword. It’s kinda like a god granting strength through a holy symbol, it’s just giving him part of its power in the form of arcane potential and a magical blade. The creature itself is probably in its own plane or somewhere deep in an ocean
Y'all forget the DM, he's the 9th person, the spirit that accompanies them and somehow influences some things
that or somewhere out in the far realm.
Frumpkin
Did Jester seriously get in touch with a god as a child just so she could have a friend because she was so lonely? My heart. I can't 😭😭
Her prayer to the traveler makes a lot more sense after that. She thinks “he’ll” leave her because she has friends now, and doesn’t need an “imaginary friend”. Idk just what i picked up, first time watching this campaign.
I spoiled it for myself because I had a sneaking suspicion... but it's so inspired.
Guard: *Kicks a cat and is a bit of a dick*
Taliesin: *Quietly* "We're gonna kill that guard"
Travis: *Just as quietly* "Yeah, he's gotta die"
Kicking a cat equates to far more than just "being a bit of a dick" to be fair, maybe not deserving of death - but definitely a broken leg or two
Get you some friends like T & T
Plot twist. The guard was transferred to work at the sanatorium
I'm convinced that it's Artagan from season one.
Kerry Burt this was my theory from episode 1 as well!!
Kerry Burt That would be a bit easy i think xD but hey, its a cool guy so why not?
I like battle sessions as muchs as the next guy, but this quiet ones when you really see the characters develop and interact are awesome.
Absolutely! It’s not called role play for no reason
Same. The way she’s playing off Fjord and Caleb was great. Starting to like Beau.
Hated her in the beginning. She got a lot better
She’s equal fave with Caleb this campaign. They have all done such a good job and I love everything they’ve done
