Hello from Japan! I was 9 or 10 when this came out. You have no idea what the promotional materials for this film did to me as a kid. Posters were everywhere, trailers aired without warning in between tv shows… Took me 20 years to actually watch it. On a sunny Sunday afternoon, of course.
Greetings from the USA. The horror from your country was a breath of fresh air when a lot of ours had lost a lot of subtlety and tense atmosphere. Dark Water, Kairo, and the Ju-On series were my favorites. I'm also a huge Silent Hill, Project Zero (to use your titles) and Clock Tower/Demento fan. Your country gave the rest of us something really special to experience. All the best from across the sea.
Such a heartwarming comment! I’m pretty sure the developers of Japanese horror games have American horror films/novels to thank for. Also, my mom’s favorite film is Alien ”because it holds up as a great film and not just in the horror genre” and I agree! As much as I find J-horror terrifying, we’re no match when it comes to great storytelling. I'm watching The Thing (1982) for the first time tonight... wish me luck!
@@righttoleftrepeat Enjoy!
@@righttoleftrepeat How'd you enjoy The Thing?
@@cameronvincent3122 Loved it. I was on the edge of my seat the whole way through. The biggest jumpscare came after the credits when I learned that it was a massive flop upon release.
I’m gonna watch Texas Chainsaw Massacre next and no sunny afternoon can protect me.
I loaned my copy of this film to a friend. She told me that after watching it, her boyfriend unplugged the tv and turned it against the wall.
Mind you, after I watched it the first time, I fell asleep on the sofa and rolled on the tv remote and hit an empty channel with just static. No coffee, energy drink or adrenaline shot could have made me more awake
LOL!!!
The static thing is so hilarious 😂
im surprised your soul didnt leave your body seeing that irl.
@@E_l_l_i_e as a kid I just thought that shit was scary how it sounded and looked🤣
@@Kmurd2003 lol, good thing I don't own a TV.
One of the reasons why I love J-Horror is how unsettling their movies are. They don't necessarily rely on jumpscare. Also not-so-amazing CGI for their films contributed to how creepy and bizarre it can be.
I would recommend Ju-On as well. There's also Noroi: The Curse, probably one of the best Japanese found footage film.
I would like to add "it comes!" from 2018 I think. I saw it on the way back from Japan on the plane...this movie is effed up man!
To be fair BOTH Ringu and The Ring have the “girl in the closet” jump scare
Great. When it was released, it was truly original and set in motion a trend of Japanese horror movies breaking out into international awareness. It was also released at the time when movies were still on VHS tapes, which added even more atmosphere to it, when you were actually watching Ringu on a VHS tape yourself, so it felt like it was the actual creepy VHS tape the movie was speaking of! I'd rate it 8 out of 10. I would love for you to also watch another amazing horror from the same director, called Dark Water. Again, watch the Japanese original, not the American remake. There is a theme within J-horror of the monster in the movies being a very human spirit or entity, and so the protagonists have to go on a journey of trying to understand and accept the spirit rather than just seeing the baddie as an evil monster to be run away from or annihilated.
It helped that the remake of Jo On had the same director as the original. But be sure to go with the unrated version.
I second Dark Water! That’s actually my favorite Japanese horror movie of all time.
The remake for Ju-on The Grudge was probably the best of the J- Horror remakes. But it's definitely recommended to watch the orginals.
Yes please watch the originals first and then the the grudge 1 2 and 3 is pure gold
+ for the remakes of 1-2 for having SMG in the lead!
The creator/writer/director of Ju-on also wrote and directed the remake.
The grudge 1 is actually the only one out of the american remakes that is good. After that, the rest really suck
The grudge was very good.
One of my favorite details about this movie is how they got the movements of Sadako to look so uncanny. That's Kabuki actress Rie Ino'o doing the movements, then played in reverse.
I never knew The Ring was a Japanese film first like The Grudge. You know I DOUBLE DARE Y'ALL TO WATCH THE MOVIE AUDITION 😳
Ringu was the introduction of Hiroyuki Sanada (the father/former husband) to an international audience, especially Hollywood. He was the psychic one, whereas the American remake made the son the one with the psychic ability. I do like the remake as well, and the only other Japanese horror remake I like also is Dark Water, but the original is always far better.
What gets me the most in J-Horror is that many times the whole setting is pretty much pleasent and normal and it could a scenerey you would see if you go outside, in contrast to western Horror movies where there is this...idk...kind of filter above it all that makes it different from real life. This calmness and peacefulness combined with the Horror elements is bringing the whole story closer to home
I would also recommend Cure (Kyua/キュア) and Pulse (Kairo/回路), both are really amazing horror films, one is a psychological mystery and the other predicts why the internet sucks its awesome
Yeeeees 🎉
Noroi: The Curse (2005) is also very good and particularly underseen in the west.
Kairo was awesome.
Pulse is one of my favorite films
Kairo is, to this day, the scariest movie I've ever watched. Something about the presentation is just sickeningly eerie. It perfectly creates a dull world full of despair, and by the end I felt as helpless as the characters.
The bit where the one girl interacts with the ghost in her apartment absolutely shook me, it's just so creepy.
The American remake is actually pretty good in terms of remakes. It benefits from being made in the 2000s so the film quality is much better. It also adds it own rainy depressing atmosphere and feels more like a mystery horror. You really feel like you're trying to solve the mystery of the tape with Naomi Watts.
I agree.
The death faces look nastier and more disturbing in the remake, albeit more realistic in the original.
I agree. And honestly the American remake is just overall superior. Not to say the Japanese original is bad or anything, but I was creeped out much more by the remake than this one.
@@ElaMongrella I agree. The first time I saw the face in the closet, it stuck with me for a long time.
and plot make more sense. some scenes are just ART, like whole cursed video, camera shots, and ideas
Both The Ring and Ringu are amazing films but just different aesthetics and execution. I personally prefer the remake but this feels much more grounded and realistic
The remake feels more realistic to me because they do actual detective work to find out about Samara instead of getting all their info from psychic visions.
I always found the remakes tape spookier.
It was the acting that took me out of the original. Seemed like watching a soap.
@@livebackwardsone of j-horror characteristics things is that 😮 usually supernatural beings 🙂😁 arent explained because 😮 there’s not explanation to it. Asian people
I watched this late at night alone, and when it finished the TV WOULD NOT TURN OFF, the GODDAM BUTTON HAD BROKEN!!! I ripped that plug out so fast lol 😂
Honestly, I’d love to see y’all watch the remake too, I love both versions for very different reasons. Ring definitely has a much more dreadful vibe, and I love how Sadako looks, but The Ring has such a stylistic approach that it just feels so atmospherically grungy and cinematic, Gore Verbinski did the remake real well, and it has one of the best scores by Hans Zimmer
Yes THANKYOU. Not enough ppl mention Hans Zimmer
Actually, the big twist was the final act where Sadako came out of the tv to kill Ryuji. But since everyone at this point already know about that scene, it wasn't as shocking and didn't feel like a twist anymore. But back then, it was such a soul-shaking twist as the movie did a very good job of not letting you know what's about to happen. They've shown enough unsettling imagery throughout the movie that you'd think that was it. They also only showed you the petrified corpse and that little flashback where a reporter dies on the spot. And since they made it seem like the curse was finally lifted after they retrieved her corpse from the well, you wouldn't expect that you'll see how someone dies 7 days after watching the tape. And even if you expected Ryuji to die, you wouldn't expect that Sadako crawling out of the well and out of the tv screen is how she kills her victims. But like I said, the big twist was already spoiled for everyone so it didn't feel like a twist anymore.
The japanese sequel (Ring 2) and the prequel (Ring 0) are actually very good. Ring 0 is my personal favorite as it delved deep into the history of Sadako and her mother plus the story is completely different from the first two movies (The Ring and Ring 2). Beyond that, I think the other sequels were just there to cash in on the popularity of the Ring series and didn't add much to the story. So if you wanna watch more of the Japanese version, I suggest watching Ring 2 then Ring 0.
I agree 💯
Ring 0 is actually pretty decent yea
EXACTLY! Ppl in 1998 and 2002 got it BEST. Back when the climaxes weren’t spoiled

The remake is actually decent but glad you guys are watching the original.
I haven't watched it in about 15 years but A Tale of Two Sisters is great too.
I second 'A Tale of Two Sisters'.
I was nine when I first watched this. I was so scared I got a fever after. And everytime I pass by our living room with a television, I wanna pass out 😭 i prolly shouldn't watch it at an early age but after I got over that trauma, I became a fan of the genre 😅
My daughter and I were discussing The Ring and she said that if she had watched the video she would wait six days and then move the TV next to a window. Then on day seven, when the TV starts to flicker and the image of the well appears she would hold the TV out of the window so that when Sadako crawls out she would just fall to the ground 😂
I'm screaming. Just.
*holds TV out window, Sadako falls, sad Sadako noises*
some of the victims die without any tv nearby ..... it seems Sadako only prefers tv when there is one nearby, otherwise she'll kill you anyway ....
@@88fejiexactly. Sadako wouldn’t fall anyway. She can teleport
Japan are by far the best at horror that doesn't rely on cheap jump scares and instead just crafting movies that unsettle and weave their way under the skin. Interestingly, in western society we are used to scenes which pan from left to right because of our language system being read from left to write. You will often see that objects of interest are placed slightly on the right of shots as that is how our eyes are used to scanning for important information. Japanese characters are read from left to right when horizontal but they are also written from right to left when vertical so the notion of only reading the screen from left to right is less ingrained in Asian culture and as such the way shots are composed in Japanese cinema is unusual to western eyes and can throw people off balance. When you're making horror, that feeling of uncertainty and not being quite sure where to check the screen for danger is really effective.
Spain are also up there as one of my favourite nations of horror filmmakers.
Im kind of tired of the jump scare hate. There PLENY room for jump scares but that does not mean they’re always needed. The term “cheap jump scare” is also overused online. BOTH Ring movies have the “girl in closet “ jump scare. If you want a film that overused jump scare, watch “Smile”
Remember watching this as a kid on DVD. It was night and i was home alone. The DVD player was upstairs and was connected to my tv in my room downstairs. So after the movie i was proper freaked out. Home alone and i heard noices coming from the TV upstairs. Had to go up and it was of course all dark... except the TV that had the white noice effect in the DVD menu, and suddenly an eye poping up and moving, still remember the noice and white flickering coming from the tv... i quickly turned it off and ran like hell back downstairs turning ALL the lights on.
Martyrs - the French language original is incredible. The last 20 minutes...watch it if you dare.
That is a tough one.
You monster
The American remake actually wasn't bad. There were some unnecessary changes, but on balance, it stayed pretty true to the story and the atmosphere.
For this sort of thing, you might also like "Noroi: The Curse."
If you have already seen "Ju-on," and want to see something silly, check out "Sadako vs. Kayako." It's like Freddie vs. Jason...but not.
I like the American one more actually
@Wicker 2 Yeah both movies are nothing like the books they're based on, so I don't know why people knock the American version for being "unfaithful" when the Japanese original is also very unfaithful to the source material.
@@dontreadmyprofilepicture8817THANKYOU. I’m TIRED of Ring 2002 haters! Like they don’t have to prefer that version but sheesh stop the hate. Neither Ring film is perfect
Good on you guys for watching the original.
Other reactors all seem to be doing the Hollywood remake.
For a second I was worried they were doing the remake when it popped up in my subscriptions because every other channel is doing the remake. SO glad they watched the original
The remake is better, though.
@@zammmerjammer The overuse of CGI when Samara comes out of the TV is cringe af
@@MoonageDaydream. remake made a lot more sense and effects in this are horshit and video tape is far more creepy in remake

Such a great film! Japanese horror really hits differently.
I love this movie. It's a very subtle and unassuming kind of horror. The way it is shot often makes it seem like the main characters are watched by some unseen entity. Also the documentary-like style makes it seem very realistic and authentic.
Then when shit goes down in the last scare It's genuinely unsettling.
I was bored by the remake. Just jump scares in your face and I thought the makeup looked silly. Was saved a bit by Naomi Watts who is fantastic in the movie.
have you even watched the remake? i just watched it and jump scares in that movie are pretty minimal
I remember seeing this in a theater in L.A. It was shockingly scary, much more so than the remake, imo.
Jeez, that was really terrifying...
That Spider-poo story gonna give me nightmares
Of all American remakes, The Ring does a pretty decent job. Re the twist at the end: the point is that unlike traditional Japanese stories where you need to save the bones or whatever, in fact, Sadako’s purpose was pure hatred of humanity. She just wants the virus spread to everybody.
Also, the novels this film is based on are absolutely fking crazy.
*SPOILERS*
As it turns out, everything you’ve just seen happen actually happens in a simulated world created by scientists to simulate evolution. In the real world, the curse of the ring has managed to escape the program and infect the real world, which manifests as a sort of cancer destroying the world. There’s about another million crazy things that I can’t even begin to describe, e.g., Sadako is actually a hermaphrodite who rebirths herself and infects pregnant women with her DNA so that they they birth more Sadakos, in an attempt to make the world only Sadakos. Hahahaha. So much madness.
i HIGHLY recommend "shutter (2004)", it's a thai supernatural horror that is SO good. horror movies don't usually get to me but that one got to me and the ending is just *chef's kiss*
What i love about this movie is, that until the very end it could still be a thriller ...
6:13 When Tom clutches invisible pearls ... you know its a scary movie.
I remember watching the American version on video at home, alone. After the movie finished, my phone rang. Turned out to be my mum.
Oh wow can't believe you guys hadn't reacted to this before!! I watched this in the cinema when it first came out. Went home and showered with the door open.
I hadn't watched the Japanese original in ages. Great fun to revisit it with you lads. Happy Halloween!
Hi! Asian-American (new subscriber) here and want to point out the pace that horror is written between Japanese and American is different, which is why many people may prefer western’s Ring vs Japan’s.
With that being said, American’s remake is good in a way that it’s more “adjusted” to western references and home life situation, so I think it’s good. Again, maybe a pacing difference?
Accented Cinema does a really good explanation on the context of why the movie was impactful (tech really began to incorporate into our everyday lives), as well as other cultural stuff. They also have a video about Thai Horror, which is also really good if you’re ever in the mood to explore more Asian (or any foreign) horror films!
As Bong Joon Ho, the famous SK director, accepted his foreign film award for “Parasite” at the Golden Globes, he said, “Once you overcome the 1-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.”
nahh ... it seems more people find the original Ringu to be way better than the amercian remake, those who prefers the american remake seems to be mostly those who watched it when young .... but as youngsters they are easily scared and not mature enough to appreciate the finer qualities of film making and think shallowly in terms of how obvious the make up should be, they don't even notice how fake cgi looks, adults seems to respond drastically differently, adults in general are able to appreciate the atmosphere of the original better....
One of the very few channels that are reacting to the original, props to you, guys. I have seen this movie first and loved it, later I have seen the US remake and it was ok.
As an American, your opinion on American remakes wounds me, even if it's largely true. However, the American remake of The Ring is pretty amazing. They did not duplicate that magic with The Ring 2 or The Ring 3.
good to see you guys back posting horror movies my favorite hope to see lots of content from you this great month of October
I love that you guys are reacting to Japanese original. I'm not saying remakes are bad, but there're definitely unique aspects in original
Yes the original needs more spotlight
FYI: In Japan, there are essentially two different "Ring 2" films. "Ring" and "Ring 2: Spiral" were released simultaneously. The first "Ring" film was based on a novel. Likewise, "Ring 2: Spiral" was based on the sequel novel to "Ring." "Ring 2: Spiral" which featured a different director, was not a great adaption of the source material. "Ring" was a huge hit in Japan. "Ring 2: Spiral" was not. A year later, the original director returned with "Ring 2" which completely ignored "Ring 2: Spiral" and is an original story as it does not follow the plot of any of the novels directly. Both sequels were direct followups to the original film and even featured some of the same cast. Two sequels. Two different timelines.
I saw the remake film when I was like 13 and it scared the shit outta me, one of my favourite films! I guess you guys won’t watch the remake? Maybe in a few months I would love to see your reaction!
I love the Ring trilogy. Ring 0 is scary as heck in the final act.
Also this trilogy will be on my halloween weekend playlist!
Must say i also love that Sadako is also playable killer in Dead by Daylight - one of my favourite killers 😀
I currently main Ghostface in DBD but I bought Sadako's chapter specifically because I really wanted to play as her.
the ring and the grudge were the scariest movies i had ever seen .. i never knew they were remakes until a few years ago and watching the original ones made me feel just as scared as i was when i was younger
well boys you watched it now too. been nice watching your channel, enjoy your last 7 days
Honestly, if you've seen one, you've seen the other when it comes to Ringu/The Ring. The American remake is pretty much a shot-for-shot of the Japanese film.
This is one of those films I have never gotten around to watching because it petrified me as a kid. Even the scary movie parody of this scared me when I was younger just because of their spoof on this character.
was in high school when i saw this, rode with my friends on motorcycles to the midnight showing of this movie, after we watched this movie and gone our separate ways home, riding alone was so scary that i seem to still remember that feeling.
Ughhh love yourvids guys this vid brings me back to when I first started watching y’all
Gentlemen wow!!! What a horrifying film this is. The sound the visuals are one of a kind. Thank you, impatiently waiting your next film!
You knew the Swedish version of "Let the one in" is far better than the american remake.
This version looks well more creepy than the remake
This is an amazing film, pure and simple. I bought this back in the day before it was available in the UK. I had to order it from japan, and it came on an unlabelled VHS tape. £ 70 but worth every penny!
I saw this around 2001/2002 on VHS. We still had a landline at that time, and we were watching this in the dark. At one point, our phone rang at the exact same time as theirs rang in the film... We jump out of our skins!
8:14 Did you notice that was the actor who played Scorpion in Mortal Kombat (2021)
Obsessed with the whole Ring series. There's versions in Korea as well and a tv series and the first American remake is probably the best foreign horror remake I can think of.
When I watched the remake when I was a kid, the landline at home rang at the very last image of the movie. The timing of it all got me terrified. The ring still haunts me lol.
You just made my day by posting this!
I love both The Ring and Ringu. They're both pretty similar, but definitely have different vibes.
The concept of copying a tape and passing it on was really well known at the time. Getting mail that said “send this to 5 people or you’ll die” was so common. I think most people knew that the element of passing it on was a part of the movie.
But most viewers are not able to predict the chain mail aspect until the revelation in the end as the movie did well to hide it up till the last scene ....
Sure, you can say that chain mails were already well known among youngsters then but only as an afterthought after finishing watching the movie ... only after seeing the reveal at the end will people go "oh ! thats right, its a chain mail thing, why didn't I think of it !" as I can see thats how all those reaction video people react ... its still unexpected due to how the movie plot plays out ...
I wanted to watch this movie on TV in the middle of the night, in the village, out of curiosity, but I convinced my cousins because I was very scared and we watched it together. You know how old village houses are :)
Afterwards, we all went to the toilet together and survived the night like this :D Right after this movie, Battle Royal started for my luck - the channel had really broadcast two movies in a row - and I was able to get over it a little bit :D
I've watched many horror movies over time, but I don't remember being impressed by any of them as much as in this movie. It took me a long time to recover from this effect.
Next you gotta watch "Ju-On: The Grudge" (2002). After that, "Sadako vs. Kayako" (2016) (The Ring vs The Grudge) 😁
As someone who almost always hates American remakes of movies and English dubs of anime, the American The Ring is actually quite good. Definitely up there as one of the best horror remakes IMO.
It has a bit of a different vibe, really dives into the mystery investigation aspect. And the scares from what I remember aren’t the typical loud jump scares from the horrors of that time
Yes. The Ring is a rare case. Not perfect. But good enough
I love the entire Ringu (ring-you) series! Ringu-0: Birthday was another fantastic one that gives you more of Sadako's backstory :)
Saw this in the cinema, at the Stockholm Film Festival. Watching it on the big screen in a dark movie theatre scared the everloving crap out of me! Thankfully it was a matiné screening, so it was daytime when I walked out, otherwise getting home would have been slightly traumatic.
Loved this movie. First Japanese movie that I think I ever saw. Was a total massive hit then, the Western remake wasn't even close to this. Brilliant film 😎
Two other movies were made.
A sequel Ringu 2 and a prequel Ringu 0
The prequel is so so (not bad or anything) but the sequel is excellent, even surpassing the great original.
Ringu had a tremendous impact when it came out in Japan.
It single handedly started the horror/supernatural/curse Japanese monster craze of the late 90's-2000's that pretty much swept the world.
That whack towards the girl by the doc was hilarious
I don’t know about anyone else but these 98-2003ish era movies in Japan bring me back to an era I really miss growing up. Pre social media pre knowing what the world thought of things just our area.
These movies to me are gold and I love the setting being “modern” for the time thus a history piece. Add in being from Japan and It just hits deeper. I hope I am not only one.
Ringu/The Ring was so scary it made my little brother turn his TV against the wall and unplug it. Even to this day he can't have a TV in his room.
My reaction was less visceral, but then I also saw it at like 15 years old, not 10. LOL.
Haven't seen this in years, as the only one around has been the English remake - the originals really have something special though! The original Thai version of Shutter is probably the scariest movie I've ever seen, and I am almost never scared by movies. Highly recommend it if you can find it!
The story of "Ring" originated in a series of novels (which have been translated to English) by Koji Suzuki. I was a fan of the "Ring" movie series until I read the books. The films are good but they simply don't do the novels justice. One of the great things about the novels is that, as the story progresses, you actually a scientific (as opposed to supernatural) explanation of just how the Ring virus works and it's brilliant. Oh, and if you like the "Ring" film, you will love the Japanese film series "Ju-on" which is far superior and much more scary than the "Ring" films.
YAY CINNAMON ROLLS!!! I recommend "Uzumaki" for one of the most original Jhorror films, visually bizarre. Also you should watch "Funny Games!!!" you'd love it.
That Sadako eye gave me nightmares when I was young
I’m a big Ring ‘fan’ who has read all the books and seen all the films/tv shows, but my favourite is probably the first American film, which I saw after the Japanese film too. I think the TV crawling scene is better in the first theatrical Japanese film, but I prefer the character relationships, acting, pace, and reveals about past events in the American version, not that any of that is bad in the Japanese version by any means (although I do agree that the dated, schlocky soap opera flashbacks about Sadako’s past are a weak point). It’s not perfect, but I’d recommend watching the American remake too! Easy to fall into the trap of thinking all foreign language films are automatically much better and that America ruins everything with jumpscares since they have, in fairness, done that with many other remakes.
I like the remake better, which is something I rarely ever say.
"The Grudge" is in the same category.
I watched Ringu before I watched The Ring. And I love both for different reasons. But, as a narrative and overall plot The Ring is better, it feels more complete and cohesive. While also not spoon-feeding the information and still having some lore and leaving room for wonder. I would love to hear your thoughts about it.
So crazy. I watched Ringu 30 minutes ago, went online to find reviews of it and here you guys are having just uploaded this. Now I’m spooked that watching your review… that I’m cursed by you guys.
when Ring 2 came out I thought the same and watched it on a sunny day in June with the curtains open, and it still scared the shit out of me lol
8:29, you're like, "Holy shit!"
About the ending, since you didn't explicitly say it I wasn't sure you noticed or not but she called her dad and was driving to his house in order to ask him to watch the copy and sacrifice himself for her son...great film,.scared the crap out of me when I watched it on VHS back when it came out
Loved the video guys. I think you guys would like the movies Ghost Ship, Below, and Deep Rising they are kind of other underrated scary movies.
One of the things that works so well about the movie in my view is that a lot of the time it is quite grounded in the real world which I think makes the supernatural element work so well.
I think I'd probably be slightly more generous overall but can understand a 7. I've been lucky enough to spend a lot of time in Japan since the late 90s/early 2000s so that probably helps.
For my money the best j horror remains the original JUON although Noroi deserves a shout out. Or a scream.
Honestly, this is my favourite horror movie! I love the tone but also the story it's self! Ring 2 is also pretty good, Ring Zero is ok (has it's moments at least), but all the other sequels / spin offs / versions are a hot pass, sadly! XD I love that even though Sadako is a terrifying monster, she is really sympathetic in my opinion. And it all started when she wanted all the people to stop shouting at her mother. :( Great reaction, guys!
This is really cool, I'm glad your watching the original this is much more scary than the remake in my opinion. I couldn't sleep for days after first watching this.
Japan used to make great horror films. This 1998 version still scares the adult shit out of me.
MY FAVOURITE HORROR MOVIE!
I am so ready for this
Also, Ring 2 and Ring 0 are also excellent. Sadako 3D and Sadako vs kayako not so much but they can be good fun for the memes and fall into "let's just point and laugh at it" terrirtory.
I don't know if you guys going to watch the second Japanese Ringu, but I hope you do.
Ringu was great. It is also one of the few cases where the US adaptation (imo at least) was also stellar. Personally, I prefer the remake. It still held onto that eerie atmosphere very well.
Do anything from Takashi Miike and be prepared to question your God! I LOVE that you're open to foreign films! Jealous I can't experience it again for the first time but these reactions give me some life. Enjoy! Stay spooky, nerds!
Oh, and I'm throwing A Tale of Two Sisters into the mix :)
From here, there's two paths. One is to watch the 1995 Ring TV movie. The other is to watch the 1999 South Korean remake, The Ring Virus.
I know that The Ring is praised as one of the best remakes of all time. I’m not too sure about the grudge, but the Ring is definitely one of the best. I think the American version made necessary changes and added more to the intro.
Was lucky enough to find the Japanese TV version of the original novel of 'Ringu' on youtube years ago.
It's different in detail, with some sections in film and others on video, and a male protagonist, with him being present when one of the teenagers is killed while riding his motorcycle in traffic (at the same moment the girls at the house who watch the tape, and the girl necking with her boyfriend in a car die) and the image of that guy holding a baby while watching the tape, a vision which is seemingly projected from Sadako in the well underneath him at that moment.
This gets picked up in later versions as Sadako spreading a Virus over visual media, like 'Spiral' or the Korean 'Ring Virus'.
The remakes mostly miss the thread about how most Japanese ghost stories are told by women for women, as criticism of how they are treated in Asian countries.
This is one of the only movies that got me terrified not only during the film but also afterwards. And I'm a huge horror fan and I think, hard to impress.
I saw it in Paris at a late showing, and then went home. I knew I had seen the whole cursed video, and now I was alone in my apartment in the middle of the night...And I swear I didn't know what to do with the tv, because I knew if I unplugged it it could simply just turn itself on anyway , and then SHE would crawl into MY place and do her "thing" :-)))
My favorite month - I love your reacts to horror movies.
I loved both versions Japanese and American of The Ring and The Grudge. Plus since you guys watch Ringu would you be reacting to the American versions of The Ring and both versions of The Grudge?
In my opinion, the best japanese horror movie ever made! 😎
My dad made me watch this as a kid. Never saw the American remake. Didn't need to after being traumatized for weeks after watching the original.
