  • Step by Step!
    In today's video, we'll be fixing a John Deere 325 Engine oil leak!
    Check out my previous video where I removed the engine: • John Deere 325 - Engin...
    This Engine is a Kawasaki FC540V & it needs both a sump gasket & also a crankshaft oil seal replacement.
    I recommend replacing both at the same time!
    I also used Blue Permatex Threadlocker on all the bolts!

    Thank you for taking the time to carefully explain and film this repair procedure. Seriously, One of the best instructional videos that I've seen. After watching this video and the prior one, on removing the engine, I now feel comfortable tackling this repair myself.

    Complements! One of the better in structural videos on the subject. You speak at a good speed not fast giving the viewer a better opportunity to pick up on what is required. Just good overall detail verbiage and video coverage.

    Thank you for sharing this. I wouldn't have thought of flipping the engine upside now; that was fantastic! So much easier. Thank you also for explaining to move the crankshaft a bit when reinstalling the sump. When I did that my sump dropped right into place. I did this on an FS-500v; a little different but same basic process. The FS-500V has two sleeve bushings that sit just above the lower main seal...and they are a tight fit! But, with some patience and lots of gentle wiggling, the sump comes off.

    Thanks for the video. I have a lx277 so different engine, but similar. You gave me the confidence to do this. Tired of the oil leak. Thanks.

      Me too! My 277 would shed just enough oil to coat the front of the mower deck...then get a nice coat of grass cuttings. SUCH a mess--NO MORE!!

    I need to do a ring job on the same engine, but the model that goes on a ferris dual hydro from the late 90's. I'd love to see a video on that job. Awesome, well thought out video btw. You're a good teacher.

    How IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT
    IS HOLY AND DEAR are you able to keep a tabletop of the work bench so clean!? 😢. I’m still trying to figuring out basic First Principles. In other news - this is one of the best how to vids I’ve seen in a very long time. Not my engine - yet it’s still preparing me for a Kawasaki Main Gasket. So thanks for this…. Great Karma ❤

    I just bought a non running F710 with the same engine with 260 hours for $400. I put a new fuel line on and it fired right up. I noticed it's got the same oil leak in the exact same spot. Looks like an easy fix after watching the video.

    Ahem…. I think I may have not reinstalled the “thrust washer”. Put her all back together and fill it with oil only to see oil moments later flood the garage floor like a Friday the 13th bloodbath scene. I KNEW I was missing something about crankshaft end play that I didn’t fully commit to understanding…😂 Ever have that happen? So many details to keep track of. At any rate, I do have the washer (thought it was for the crankshaft end between pulleys). The good news is breaking the unit down is happening at record speed. 👍

    Good video as usual. Too bad Stens didn't have that gasket....I love Stens...good belts too. 2 year warranty now eh! Permatex has some thick red rebuild lube and high heat gasket adhesive that I like, just an FYI since you're a Permatex guy. I love Permatex too.

    You could just put a 6 inch extension in the improper direction of a large socket. Works the same as a seal drive, as the force is distributed throughout the whole surface. Good video though

    Good Video, would have been nice if you had shown how you removed & replaced the sump screen though.

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for watching! And as for the screen, I just used a small bristle brush and all the little chunks came out, it cleaned up nicely.
      I'd only recommend replacing the screen if it's really clogged up, but then again, you can always just soak it in some carb cleaner and it should remove the gunk.

    That sump gasket failure is super common on these kawi 540 engines.

  • @Slotcartires

    You mention different thicknesses of sump gaskets. How thick is stock? Do I just order a stock gasket or do I measure the old one and give the thickness measurement to my local parts guy and he will know which gasket I need? Maybe the facotry uses just one thickness of gasket but adjusts crankshaft endplay by using different thickness thrust washers???

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  3 года назад +2

      I believe it won't say on the stock, and the other kind will say like 0.015" etc... And yes they use thrust washers, but as things start to wear you can use a sump gasket thickness similar to how an engine builder would use a cylinder head gasket thickness.

    So far 6 years and no return leaks yet

    You have 2 seals listed (Bottom and Upper) how do I know which one I need

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  3 года назад

      If the oil is leaking out of the lower that's the one you replace. Sometimes you only need to replace the bottom. But many times people see a seal number and order the wrong one by accident. So I listed them both for clarification.

    • @Texican1988
      @Texican1988 3 года назад +1

      Ok thanks I went ahead and ordered the sump pan gasket and the crankcase seal you have listed as lower. I really appreciate your reply and your videos are top notch. Keep up the awesome work
