For those watching this video years later I thought it might be helpful to know there is more than one Blue Devil head gasket sealer. I had a friend that used the smaller ( 16 oz ) bottle that's featured in the video and he didn't have any luck but I used the larger (1 quart)Blue Devil version and it did work for me. I highly recommend following the directions

Been using the sealers for years. Grew up originally using just basic sodium silicate which was easy to buy. Not all gaskets are created equal. Also the liquid glass method wasn't always wise. I've had more success with Steal Seal and K-seal never used the ultimate formula. Had the most failures with BlueDevils formula. Tested most on the markets as the budget of customers its what they brought for me to use. I just did what the manufacturer stated for instructions. My friends 2004 Impala leaked in 2007 did a new gasket. In 2010 it blew again only 68000 miles and 2x blown so I did the Steel Seal this time and now there 201k on the vehicle and hasn't leaked or blown another spot. Thats the longest lasting quick fix I've been able to track. As the owner gave me the vehicle and I gave it to my brother and he sold it to a friend in need. The Bars Block seal imo should be only temporary as I've had to do many radiator and heater core flushes as it clogged either the radiator or the heater core. Especially in aluminum rads. Seen 4 Land Rovers clogged bottom of the rads. Just replace the gasket in those beasts.

Great video. Anyone who knows cars a little has had to help a gramps, a single mom, a kid on this one. I think the mechanism of sodium silicate is probably not just an evaporative deposition, but chemically triggered too. If so, the gasket or sealer (Subaru) might work better or worse. Not really sure but „water glass“ silica has a complex chemistry to become water proof.

That's why I used Bar's Stop Leak. Works great for me. To change a heater core on this car, the entire dash needs to come out about a 2 day job for a professional, 3 days for a DIY. I've been working on cars for nearly fifty years, and I've tried many different head gasket sealers over the decades. Usually the sealers from my early days were made to just get you home, but over the last decade things have definitely changed. My experience over the last ten years has seen quite a big difference in the quality and performance of these additives, and the one I recommend most would be Blue Devil, from their rear main seal repair, to transmission shift additive, and head gasket sealer, they are definitely The Best in my opinion!!!!

what you should recommend is get the actually fixed, if you can't afford that high bill just get a cheaper car and don't go to a dealer ship for starters. If you're car is worth $1500 i doubt anyone will be able to spend 30 000$ on a newer car, so yea, fix it if the bodywork is in good shape. On the used market you'll never know if there is sawdust in the engine or not.

I've been using that exact Bar's Leaks sealer on a 2010 Prius (that year is known for blowing head gaskets). First sealed it in late Feb 2020, and the problem did come back roughly 10k miles later. I've put about 25k miles on it so far and still going (bought it at 193k, 218k now) about to add some more sealer again. It needs more when it starts to shake briefly on a cold start, and at the same time I notice the coolant level very slowly going down. I didn't use as much the 2nd time because I figured after the first time, it was still mostly sealed. I think I used 1/3rd of a bottle the last time. Oil has been clean the whole time. Leak was pretty minor from the get-go, would take days of normal driving to notice the reservoir having less coolant in it.
16:30 The bottle shows more steps than that...first step after pouring the sealer is to get it up to temp (In a Prius that means go for a short drive), and then stop and cool off completely, but THEN you're supposed to also go for a second 15 minute drive after it cooled from the first step, not the next day. That's when I take it on the freeway for 20 minutes or so. THEN the next day and for the next 10k, it runs great. Maybe that's what caused the thermostat on the Jaguar to stick closed for a bit? I really have no idea, I'm no mechanic and these problems have variables.

My dad just blew the head gasket on the family's 2011 Chevy Aveo with an overheat. (I'm pretty sure the rad has a leak and I'll be pulling it tomorrow to confirm.) The reservoir now blows the coolant out when the cap is off which it never did before and I found water/coolant ontop of the pistons after pulling the spark plugs. But your video is so comprehensive that it has given me the confidence to give the Blue Devil a try once I get the rad leak fixed, versus taking the head off the block and praying to everything since I've never even opened a valve cover before. I'll try to remember to update this as it goes.

Chris, not sure how you manage to make an even better and more comprehensive repair/how to video than all your others, but this was a tremendous one. Very informative. Prior to watching this, I would have been skeptical about using any of these head gasket leak fix products. Now, If I were facing a similar situation, (low value vehicle, with head gasket leak, and unjustifiable repair cost) I would definitely try these products. Just preventing the overheating and coolant loss would have been a big win, but going for an additional 2 years and 10k miles was a tremendous endorsement for these products-or at least the one used. Great job on this long term project video and all the great content your putting out. Keep up the great work!

Going through about a gallon of antifreeze a month. I used the K Seal brand sealer. The only thing I did different from the instructions was since it wasn't going through antifreeze very fast, I drained out about a gallon from the radiator, mixed the sealer into the antifreeze and added it back to the reservoir. Watched the coolant level closely for about a month with very little loss of coolant. She drove it for another 8 months before we traded it in. Didn't notice any side effects from it. The heater worked like normal. No over heating issues.

I had been watching every video I could find to choose the best one. I settled on K-Seal Ultimate because of ease of use. I had a blown head gasket on a 2001 Buick Century 3.1 engine, very famous for weak head gaskets. I followed the directions and almost fainted when I saw the massive volumes of white smoke dying down to absolutely nothing within 5 minutes of the thermostat opening at operating temperature. I started with short trips in town for a week, just in case it failed. The next week I took it out on the highway at 60 mph for 65 mile round trip with no problems. I have since driven from Kingman to Laughlin several times. It is torture on cars pulling that 13 mile steep grade to the top at 65 mph. The real test will come when the weather gets hotter. My two test were done in 77* to 84* temperatures with the A/C on to put extra stress on the cooling system. The temp gauge stayed just below halfway mark. I'm really impressed with K-seal. I bought the beautiful Buick with the head gasket blown for $100.00. paid $33.00 for the K-seal so if the repair doesn't last a long time, I won't be losing a lot. I will keep you posted as I am starting my 5th month of driving it after using K-plus. I will update periodically.

I'm an automotive technician with 20 years of experience. The times where I diagnosed a bad head gasket, the labor was usually more than the value of the vehicle. And replacing the engine was just as costly. In the rare cases that the customer wanted to try a head gasket sealant, we usually used Blue Devil, as it gave the best results. Some of these vehicles have an incredible repair process to fix a head gasket. A lot of shops won't take this kind of work anymore, as it ties down the tech, slows shop production, and more often than not, you'll find other things that need to be repaired in order to correctly repair the vehicle. And the cost of repair goes up, which pisses off the customer.
A lot easier to tell the customer NO at the front desk.
