Any time you have the shroud off a Courage you should retorque the top cover bolts. This engines are notorious for backing out the top cover bolts and when they get far enough out they’ll hit the flywheel and you’ll get the Kohler crack and the sump will be gone. Retorquing once a year may save your engine.
Followed your excellent video and successfully replaced the seal in my Kohler Courage 18 SV541 engine. I was able to do it without removing the engine from the frame. Should have done this years ago. Thanks!
Excellent videos. Having the same issue on my 18 HP Cub Cadet XT1 since it was 1 year old. Been running it while keeping an eye on the oil level but it's time. Thanks for taking the time to show the how to.
Have this same tractor. Replaced the valve cover gasket but I think it’s the crank oil seal and/or the oil pan gasket. Should probably do both if the engine is out I figure. Thx
The Kohler Courage does not have a oil pan. It just has a top cover. So if you have oil leaking at the base of the engine, it's most certainly that crankshaft seal. The valve cover gaskets on these engines also ALWAYS leak, as you know, since you already replaced that. Good luck.
Really appreciate the video! I've got a 2011 MTD Gold rider, model is 13AX795S004. Went to start it up a couple seasons ago and it blew oil out the bottom when I tried to start it. I shut it off right away and it has sat for the last 2 years. All the oil has leaked out of it while it sat. I finally got it out yesterday and pressure washed it to see if I could spot what happened. I'm sure it's the crankshaft seal as the oil had pooled on top of the pulley. With your video I have confidence I can pull the engine and do the clean/replacement like you have. But for the life of me, I can't seem to find an engine schematic online to get the seal number. Will the link you have in the description, will that seal work? I also want to replace the valve cover gasket as that has been dripping as well. Thanks!
Use the engine info (not the tractor info) to look up a parts diagram online. But if it’s a single cylinder kohler courage, then I’m sure it’s the same seal I have linked in the description. I have another video where I do the valve cover gasket replacement. Yes they all leak.
Great job on your seal install video!!!!!!!

That's a great tip. I really appreciate it.

Can you post where you purchased the seal from? I have a 25 hp Kohler with the same issue.
See link in video description. The seal for your engine might be a different part number.....
On a Courage 20 Kohlor engine on the bottom main seal does the flat side of seal go towards the case or away
Flat side goes away from engine case
How do you know if you covered the return oil hole with the seal when you drove it all the way up on the shaft? Just curious.
The seal is concave, so it will not cover that hole when fully seated.
All Pto oil seals must be fully seated all the way up to the ledge to seal.

At 6:37 I noticed the old filter was black and you replaced it with a yellow one? Will that make a difference?
Just doing an oil and filter change as part of the job.
Make no difference. Same filter just yellow vs black.
Fact is that the seals leak all the time on theses engines and brand
B/S seals last for 15 years and so does Honda
I have a B/S Quantum that is 18 yrs old. They don’t make them that well anymore. The Intec singles are just as bad as these.
Really why not just replace all gaskets and seals plus valve job to
Then you’ll done for 3/4 years
