Absolutely one of the best singers of the 60’s
Gene Pitney was an American singer-songwriter & musician in the 60's-70's. He had a lot of great songs such as "Town Without Pity", "(The Man Who Shot) Liberty Valance", "Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa", "I'm Gonna Be Strong", "It Hurts To Be In Love", "Half Heaven, Half Heartache". He also wrote the early 1960's hits "Rubber Ball" recorded by "Bobby Vee", "Hello Mary Lou" by "Rick Nelson", "He's A Rebel" by the "Crystals" & "Today's Teardrops" by "Roy Orbison".
I agree with everything you said. Great highlights of his career.
One of my all time favorites! Great comment. Loving Shawn and Mel! 👍
Forgot "Mecca". Great song, too.
Don't forget "(I Wanna) Love My Life Away" his first song to appear on the Billboard charts.
‘Something’s gotten hold of my heart ‘with Marc Almond in the 80’s was a big hit as well a redo of his solo version .
"Only Love Can Break A Heart" is my favorite Gene Pitney song.
yes this is the best.
"One of a kind" voice!
Yes!!!
Gene was one of the greatest 1960's singers. Great voice, great songs!!!
Oh man! You MUST listen to more Gene Pitney! His songs are so good!!
Another Gene Pitney classic is “It hurts to be in love”. Thanks Shawn and Mel for your amazing choice of oldies.👍❤️
Remember, not all love songs have a happy ending. It's just a song.
by the time i get to phoenix by glen campbell is another tear jerker
More Gene Pitney please! He had such a unique voice. Try "I'm Gonna Be Strong", "Every Breath I Take", or my favorite, "If I Didn't Have A Dime".
ps ... Gene Pitney married his high school sweetheart in 1967, and was still with her when he died in 2006. (It's only a song ... lol)
Regardless of the lyrics, Gene himself married his childhood sweetheart in 1967 and was happily married until his sudden and sad death (while touring in Wales, from a heart attack,) in 2006. They had three sons. Gene Pitney's amazing voice and the emotion in his delivery have kept us entranced since the 1960s.
LOVE Gene Pitney, very underrated artist. I love this song because it’s so real. These things happen every day, one day you’re in an ok relationship and then you meet someone and you have feelings you’ve never had before. Btw, he doesn’t say he’s married or has children. More Gene please like “something’s gotten hold of my heart” or “ I’m gonna be strong”
lut.....he wasn't underrated at the time, but he seems to have faded in memory compared to presley and orbison. died in his sleep after performing a show in britain. wonderful and unique voice
'Princess in Rags', 'I'm Gonna be Strong', 'Town Without Pity' are only three of the fabulous songs that talented man gave us.
I've always liked "I'm Gonna Be Strong" for some reason. It pretty much describes the end of my first marriage.
"Meca"
I love Gene Pitney! He was one my favorite singer when I was in college and no one could understand my fixation with him. You are the first reactors that I have seen cover him. He sang the title song for the movie, "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance". Thanks guys.
Fun fact it was ment to be the title song for the movie but due to licenseing issues was ultimately never used as intended
I am 50 years old and I have loved this man all my life was my mum's favourite singer so was born hearing this man
“I’m Gonna Be Strong” is a must-listen for Gene Pitney. He has a lot of great hits, but this shows the power of his voice like no other. Enjoy your journey with Gene. It’ll be unique!
Yes ! .. My favourite Gene Pitney song .. It's a vocal masterpiece !
👍 Totally!👍
This guy's voice reminded me of another song from the early 60's. "Down in the Boondocks" by Billy Joe Royal. I doubt anyone else has reacted to it and I know you'll love it. It was popular when my parents first moved out to the country where the only public utility, we had, was electricity.
I was thinking the same thing in the begining of the song, it's the same intro.
Gene did a version of "Boondocks..." too. Just as good.
Not familiar with this song but it sounds a little bit like Down By The Boondocks.
Same here! That's exactly what I was thinking about at the beginning of this song.
Gene released "24 Hours from Tulsa" in February 1964 - "Down in the Boondocks" was released in May 1965. Billy Joe Royal admired Gene so much - that's why the songs sound so much alike! Per Billy Joe: "Man, I wanted to BE Gene Pitney!"
Love Gene Pitney he was so popular in the uk during the 60's and 70's. 😍
I love his music.
His voice is one of the most unique voices of all time, yet not word about his voice, or talent, just repeating the obvious lyrics. You guys are awesome, and I want to keep listening. You pick really good songs, especially older country.
Sorry didn't mean to like my own comment.
Sadly Gene passed away in Cardiff Wales my nearest city after performing. My favourite by him is Looking Thru the Eyes of Love…… Gene was another performer who made you feel the songs lyrics
Yay. At last someone reacting to Gene Pitney - the American Tom Jones. Great voice, great personality and that very American preppy look (gorgeous!). Lots of great songs but try 'Nobody Needs Your Love', my favourite, next please. Thanks.
Love Genes songs. RIP.
His versions of the song "Somethings Gotten Hold Of My Heart" is an emotional ride as well. I prefer his 1960's version to the one he released as a duet with Marc Almond in 1989 but that's just me.
You are correct 😄
@@docnflossie7351 Both are good
It's not just you. The 1960s version featuring just Gene Pitney by himself is a FAR better rendition of the song, than the 80s duet cover with Marc Almond. Gene Pitney is a much better singer for one thing, so it was better with him singing all the verses. Also the 60s is a better arrangement, despite the higher recording quality of the 80s technology.
Brilliant, how music can evoke feelings and memories. Even a song you have never heard before.
Love Gene's ton of voice, especially when he sings falsetto. Awesome song covered hugely by Dusty Springfield. Gene was an outstanding artist. My others fav tracks by him are "Every breath I take". "Something' gotten hold of my heart" and the so sad "Somewhere in the country", and "Backstage, I'm lonely"
Gene Pitney had such a wonderful voice.
Love "Backstage", "Meca", "Town Without Pity", "Princess In Rags", "That Girl Belongs To Yesterday", just to name handfull off the top of my head.
Only love can break a heart!!!!!!!!!
Town without Pity!!!!!!!!!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Finally glad someone reacted to Gene Pitney ❤❤❤
Half Heaven Half Heartache is another good one by Gene
"Town without pity" is fantastic as well ❤❤
One of the things I really liked about the music back in the days when I was young was virtually every topic was up for discussion in a song and it allow people a platform to think about all these possible things in life that can happen or have happened to you. It makes a connection between you and that song for your entire life because the song and you share that commonality.
In Connecticut Gene Pitney was called "the Rockville Rocket" as he was from Rockville CT. Must do "town without pity"
Town Without Pity... amazing!
Only love can break the heart by gene pitney.
I love the innocent look of horror on Mel and Shawn's face when they listen to these oldies songs.
Crikey! They'll just faint at some of the lyrics in British songs! "Lola" for instance!
What a smooth voice.
Loved all his songs.
He was real big in UK too. One of his best songs is Last Exit To Brooklyn
"Gene Pitney - Something Gotta Hold of My Heart" is a classic.
One of my all time favorite songs. I’ve always wondered why it wasn’t covered more often.
OK. Should you ever find yourself in this situation - take your food to your room straightaway, alone, and go home in the morning.
One of the best singers and Brill building writers
I love watching you react as the story unfolds. Your facial expressions are priceless!! Love your channel. ❤❤
More Gene Pitney please. I was lucky enough to see him twice back in the sixties, undoubtedly the best singer ever! Love him
Gene Pitney was a great singer. Love his songs.
“I think we have a problem”…. Cracked me up.
One of my favorite singers: Gene Pitney, Johnny Mathis, Tommy Edwards.
Looking through the eyes of Love, I’m gonna be Strong, Mecca ..all great songs, he had so many. Plz do more reactions to Gene Pitney
Saw Gene Pitney twice 1969 and 1970 he was brilliant live, such a powerful voice.
Play It HURTS TO BE IN LOVE, ONLY LOVE CAN BREAK A HEART, and TOWN WITHOUT PITY. His three best releases.
Hi Shawn and Mel. I love that you guys are real!
Love you guys !! Great song, great artist !! I remember it well. Loved Gene Pitney, still do...
You gotta love Gene Pitney. It's always great when the two of you keep it real.
This song was not written by Gene. It was supposed to be for a Western movie "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" but don't think it ever made it in the movie. The song "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" sung by Gene DID make it in the movie and was a hit. So it's not about his personal life. Even though 24 Hours didn't make it in the movie, it became a huge hit in the UK and US. Yes this song is shocking and sad and so unlike his many hit love songs. His voice is amazing. Thank you Always loved his songs.
This was the 60s you know
Another great singer we should all remember. Great original voice.
"I'm Gonna Be Strong" is an amazing song! His voice is SO good!
Love this song. 😀
Please take a listen to his hit It hurts to be in love. Awesome song that rings true! Love you both!! Thanks for the sweet memories!! God bless.
I love it hurts to be in love...let's hope that Shawn and Mel react to it.
Mel’s facial expressions are awesome! I love you guys happy New Years to you both!
Gene Pitney's, town without pity is another good one. Yes, back then when you lived with someone more times than not, you were married.
This is another great song! You need to here his "Town Without Pity"! (Learned a lot about you guys on this one . . .)
You two seem to be finding all my old teen heartthrobs-thank you
I love songs like this because they bring a gritty realism to things that people seldom talk about in any real manner. Media (especially today) romanticizes "following your heart" and "living in the moment." It's also done in movies (a LOT of romantic comedies, etc.) but unless or until YOU are the one that's gone through something like this from either side... talks and thoughts about these things (as within the media) tend to be or remain superficial or without any real/personal investment. People don't like to admit what they are capable of, have actually done, or what others are equally as capable of doing... and most of us are too cowardly to bear the consequences/stigma to just OWN our past or present self. But songs like this add an entire level of "OH SHIT!" Or in some cases they simply paint truly provocative pictures that one almost can't help to think deeper about due to the emotion &/or atmosphere in which the artists deliver them. And what we each get from songs like this can vary. Some may feel trapped in their own life/relationships and feel envious of the character that gets to (or can) just chuck it all away for something new. Others may feel repulsed to a level of almost physical pain that people can actually be so cruel, and others may even rationalize or "read into" the story various nuances as their own live mature and change.
The greatest question to ask (from my perspective) when listening to songs like this is; in your own life will you seek light, accept darkness, or just muddle along the greys in between? And are you ready to accept the "rollercoaster" of consequence that comes with those choices?
The inherent morality (or lack of morality) in songs like this remains fairly blatant. As are the emotions they conjure. Which for people of little experience or the fairly young life can be a GOD SEND. Because if you let them, songs like this can be a roadmap to avoid one's own poor choices/bad behavior... like a precursor to follow BEFORE or WHEN compulsions/emotions arise that might overtake our regularly better selves. And for others they can be a roadmap toward redemption... a song that hits with such impact that they reflect their own crap feelings or history to the point that they suddenly can't avoid or escape truly looking themselves in the mirror anymore or finally owning the SHAME they've brought upon themselves... or the misery they've created for others. And almost nothing (or no one) ever gets changed for the better or fixed without similar levels of self-recognition (which is also the reason why most people need or go to therapists). Especially since most of us tend to surround ourselves with people that never call us out for our own immoral crap. Often because as "birds of a feather" they have their own dark/dank stank to hide) or they're simply just as cowardly as us, or we simply lie/hide it from the people we DO end up surrounded with.
Ina nutshell, giving in to the fickle escape of emotionality &/or delusion ALMOST ALWAYS leads us (as well as others) toward far worse outcomes than had we simply been honest and chosen the harder (yet brighter) path. Because living morally may not always achieve grand or flashy results... but we NEVER lose our Self-Respect or Dignity in proving our LOYALTY or maintaining TRUST... which is the ACTUAL CURRENCY of sentient being, while also being the fabric/infrastructure of HUMANE & PROSPEROUS personal lives as well as ANY/ALL CIVILIZATIONS of ACTUAL WORTH.
Which is also why I reject 90+% of the Songs & Media of the modern era... because they literally ignore this fact entirely... or imply the OPPOSITE.
Screw the Liberal Media, as well as any asshat that thinks morals are "subjective." Because history and its results have PROVEN otherwise.
HuGGz
I saw Gene Pitney many times he was always in the UK he was absolutely amazing live we always jumped on the stage and kissed him he was a brilliant singer and songwriter he was such a gentleman it was so sad and such a shock to everyone he had only been on the tv 📺 the night before myself and my daughter was going to see him the following night he looked great but the next morning it was on the tv 📺 that he’d past away in his hotel the maid found him in bed she thought he was just asleep but when she couldn’t wake him she realised he had past away I was absolutely devastated such a beautiful man he had so much more to give so sad Love 💕 from Denise in Yorkshire England 🏴👼😢🌹🌹🙏🙏🙏💔
My favorite Gene Pitney song was "Tower Tall" The lyrics are fabulous and his voice is at it's best.
Gene had one of the best voices of all time. Try Half heaven ,half heartache.
One of my all-time favorite artists.
You guys’ reaction to a song is so funny! It’s just a song!🤣
Another great singer from the 60's. He has alot of great songs.
Sometimes the passion of the moment and the excitement of new love is just overwhelming. It happens, it happened to me, and even though it was wrong, i never regretted it, because its those special moments we carry threw our lives.
I'll tell you two really, really good things that Gene Pitney did. One was a song called, "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance," which he sang, but did not write. Another was a song called "He's a Rebel," which The Crystals sang, but which he wrote. They're both absolutely brilliant.
By the way, to fend off a lot of replies to this, yes, I do know the story about the Crystals involvement with "He's a Rebel."
Wow! He wrote He's a Rebel! Thanks..
he truly was one of the great voices.
@@m.harris2429 He was very talented.
Town without Pity is my fav by him🙂
Classic song!👍
Gene Pitney makes you live through everything he sings about. 24 Sycamore is the onw that floors me. Even more than this one. Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart is an emotional roller coaster too.
Being 68 and from the projects I have heard a lot of various artists, he did a song in 1958 "Every Little Breathe I Take", which was a hit on the R&B charts, he was a great singer songwriter!
Loved his unique voice and passion when he sang.
Guys! He's just the singer. Often Burt Bacharach & Hal David (who wrote the words, Hal ) choose the singers whose voices go with the song the way they want it to sound, for the effect. Like Dusty Springfield or Dionne Warwick, hence...Gene.
You guys made a whole soap opera out of a 3 minute song. 😂
Review more of his songs! Man he has voice of gold. He will never be matched!!
I’ve waited so long for you to react to Gene Pitney. He had the most amazing songs. Please continue
Such a fun reaction from the two of you! Gene Pitney, you devil you!
Love his voice!
I SAW GREAT PITNEY SHOOK HIS HAND THIS WAS BERT BACRACH SONG. AND JAY BLACK I ALLSO SAW. JAY AND AMERICANS BOTH I MISS. THIS IS GREAT VIDEO LOVE SEEING YOUR REACTION
You two seem to be very impressed with the unique voices of the 60s and 70s. You might want to try Gary Puckett and the Union Gap. You won't be sorry 😃.
Love me some Gene Pitney!
Big Rabbit Hole..yessss!!!
I love the variety of your reactions. Much wider scope than anyone else. Great selection.
Life at home was not to good apparently. “Only Love Can Break A Heart” is one of my favorites of his.
I hope you continue reviewing Gene Pitney songs cuz he's got quite a lot of really good songs and I think she's got this really great unique voice and I love his songs.
thank you guys for keepin' it real. your reactions are always great. happy new year!
This review made me subscribe to you guys. Wonderfully honest interaction between the two of you and the love is clearly visible. Love you guys :*
Lol. You two made my day. You all are hilarious. Keep up doing the videos. We love them and you all too. Lol.
A Hal David, Burt Bacharach song. Fitted Gene so well. Put Tulsa on the Map (unless you were in the UK where we sarcastically called it 24 Hours from Tulse Hill). Gene's US follow up single was That Girl Belongs To Yesterday (K. Richards, M. Jagger), produced by Gene and Andrew Loog Oldham. An excellent track with Gene Double/Triple tracking vocals on it. For more music featuring USA Town Names 1970 - Tony Christie Las Vegas
I love watching the two of you! You always make me smile.
Listen to gene Pitney every little breath I take
I remember him
If I didn't have a dime was my favourite
Australia 💕 Christina
One of my favorites too. "If I Didn't Have A Dime To Play The Jukebox" was on the flip side of "Only Love in Can Break A Heart".
Gene Pitney was a great vocalist in early 60's."Mecca" is a good one. "town Without Pity" is good.
He was also a great songwriter, he wrote the #1 tune "He's A Rebel".
Gene Pitney very awesome my mom likes his singing too
loved pitney. up there wiith orbison and presley.
Please, please do one of his hits, “Only love can break a heart”. Every breath I take.
back then they wrote songs of love, teen age love, everything, living in the gang, the guy next door, the great car? great beat and it all ran together smooth as silk. you never knew if they were singing to you, or their girl friend, the woman next door. Glad I was just a kid. back then. love hurts. have fun. I loved Gen Pitney his voice was so like no other.
OMG a true blast from the past. What a voice! I haven't heard this in years! I need to go through my old records/lp's and see if I still have this one.
