Yes! Harri, Gene Pitney had a fantastic voice that actually made these fine songs great! This great track was used on a great movie with the same title, TOWN WITH-OUT A PITY! with Kirk Dougles who played an American lawyer in a foreign county, I believe rape was the case... Yes! Harri, Gene Pitney had a great amount of hits and is sadly missed, now the world seems like a town without a PITNEY... Great stuff Harri, love your channel and keep up the great work! signed, Greg the Egg.

Gene Pitney had a big hit in the UK with "24 Hours from Tulsa." While touring there, Andrew Loog Oldham, the Rolling Stones' manager, did some publicity work for Gene and introduced him to the boys. Gene played piano on the "Not Fade Away" sessions and later covered "That Girl Belongs to Yesterday" by Jagger/Richards. Talk about strange bedfellows.

"Town Without Pity" was written by composer Dimitri Tiomkin for the 1961 film of the same title, starring Kirk Douglas as a military lawyer tasked with defending American servicemen accused of raping a girl in post war Germany. Billie Holiday passed in 1959, so she could not have covered the song. But it would have been neat to hear her do so. In some other part of the multiverse perhaps. Dimitri Tiomkin was a Russian-born American film composer who received 22 Academy Award nominations during his career, winning four Oscars. He worked with Frank Capra on You Can't Take It With You (1938), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), Meet John Doe (1941), and It's a Wonderful Life (1946). He also composed the scores for Duel in the Sun (1946), Strangers on a Train (1951), The Thing from Another World (1951), High Noon (1952), The Big Sky (1952), The High and the Mighty (1954), Dial M for Murder (1954), Giant (1956), Friendly Persuasion (1956), Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957), Wild Is the Wind (1957), The Old Man and the Sea (1958), Rio Bravo (1959), The Unforgiven (1960), and many others I left out. Tiomkin also wrote the song "Wild Is the Wind" originally recorded by Johnny Mathis in 1957 and famously covered by Nina Simone in 1959 and David Bowie in 1976. Check those versions out when you can, it'll be well worth your time.

Fun fact: Gene wrote "Hello Mary Lou," which Rick Nelson had a huge hit with in the same year, 1961. Gene didn't record it himself until the next year. Of course, the song has been covered hundreds of times, making Gene a nice bit of cash in royalties.

Dude, the world was pig-rich with cinematic/Broadway music around 1961. Can I say three words? West....Side....Story. Four more words: The Sound of Music. I don't know, maybe it was the vacuum left in the wake of Elvis' momentary departure from the chaos he created, when he enlisted in the Army. Everybody scrambling to regain the attention of the public. Anyway, the abundance of fascinating musical ideas in 1961 reminds me of the same (cinematic) glut of 1939.

Gene Pitney was an American singer-songwriter & musician in the 60's-70's. He had a lot of great songs such as "(The Man Who Shot) Liberty Valance", "Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa", "I'm Gonna Be Strong", "It Hurts To Be In Love", "Half Heaven, Half Heartache", "Mecca" etc. He also wrote the early 1960's hits "Rubber Ball" recorded by "Bobby Vee", "Hello Mary Lou" by "Rick Nelson", "He's A Rebel" by the "Crystals" & "Today's Teardrops" by "Roy Orbison".

What is strange about Gene is that while he was still alive he had after his hey day become someone many forgot about. I always loved him throughout my life (starting from a young age as my mum loved him), and over the decades friends would ask what I was listening too. I would say Gene Pitney and most didn't know who he was. Then the new version of of Somethings Gotten Hold of my Heart with Marc Almond came out and suddenly he was known again in the late 80s. I never stopped loving his music from when I was young until now. This is why I so love these reaction videos that bring this talent to the attention of a new audience.
He to me was one of the most underrated artists of all time. I loved him even when it was not particularly cool to love him. Such a distinctive voice.

Since the song's composer Dmitri Tiomkin wrote a number of film scores, it's no wonder you hear a "Bond"-like quality to the music. Gene Pitney did indeed have a unique voice and style. Sadly, he died in 2006 of a heart attack. He was only 66. What a loss...

Would love to hear you listen to Laura Nyro. What a great talent! Not under rated but under appreciated. 4-5 of her earliest songs were covered by major artists of the late 60's and early 70's and became huge hits for them. She wrote these at 16-17 years old! I generally prefer her versions. I hope you look into it and maybe do And When I Die or Wedding Bell Blues. That would be amazing. Just subbed!

Gene Pitney is a favorite from the 60s. You’re hearing a slow jazz style popular in those days reminiscent of Frank Sinatra and his contemporaries. While this song is a favorite, please listen to Gene Pitney’s “I’m Gonna Be Strong.” It’s a song portrait of a magnificent voice. It’s top of the list for me.

You need to read the background on Gene Pitney. I remember this hit song being played on the radio when I was a little girl and I'm 73 now. I thought it was haunting and the tune was stuck in my head for a long time! He was doing what he spent most of his life doing..performing..they discovered his body lying on his hotel bed, fully clothed not long after his last performance in Wales. Very satisfying performance he had commented that night..RIP Gene!!

I agree with you about it sounding like a sixties Bond soundtrack, except they always used a female singer. Gene Pitney, sounds a little like "Paul Anka" a singer/Heart throb of the same era, and maybe even more famous than Pitney. You could probably say that about many songs of the early to mid-sixties, having that same sound as a Bond soundtrack, because that's when the Sean Connery Bond films were made, and the sound quality of the studios, were all at this level. When I hear that early 60s sound, it takes me right back to when I was a boy of between 6 to 8 yrs. old.
    Thank you Harri

Tom Jones, Duran Duran, and other men did James Bond theme songs. A man sung From Russia With Love too.

The James Bond feel can definitely hear. As for the Billie Holiday reference, not at all.

Known as the Rockville Rocket from Rockville Connecticut. He moved to England and became a bigger success there.

He never moved to England. He resided just 10 miles where he grew up in Rockville Connecticut. He lived in the same home from 1970 till his death.

I still have a record of Gene Pitney. My favourite song is "The man who shot Liberty Valance", which is from the movie of the same name with my favourite actor James Stewart.

Since I have roots in the area, I've commented favorably about the "Rockville Rocket", but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention @Harribest for his unfailing optimism in evaluating music! He never fails to identify the high points of a song, regardless of the genre.
