there was good, logical reasons things were how they were. families were better suited with the man working so mothers, the overwhelming best choice, could raise the children at home. yeah, things have changed but,, imo it is still the best option if the mother can afford to stay home. destroying the nuclear family has taken it's toll...and it's not good. as helpful as feminism has been, it's been awfully destructive for women and, especially, children in the process. the data is very clear on this subject.

    Shawn & Mel, from Wikipedia:
“You Don't Own Me" is a popular song written by Philadelphia songwriters John Madara and David White and recorded by Lesley Gore in 1963, when Gore was 17 years old. The song was Gore's second most successful recording and her last top-ten single. On November 27, 2016, along with 24 other songs, the Grammy Hall of Fame announced its induction.
The song expresses emancipation, as the singer tells a lover that he does not own her, that he isn't to tell her what to do or what to say, and that he is not to put her on display. The song's lyrics became an inspiration for younger women and are sometimes cited as a factor in the second wave feminist movement.

@@donny1960 ahh, so i do have a point here... interesting. i'm just pointing out the hypocrisy of OP, jsjazz 12, talking about men treating women like objects "back then''. My point is women don't need men's help to do that because, now is not back then, yet, women put themselves out there as sex objects more than ever, and at a steadily increasing rate and use every avenue they can to do it. So, is that men making them do that? uh, NO...and saying some men treated women like objects...NO SHIT! Men and women used to do that, still do that, and will always do that. Basically, I'm just saying jsjazz 12 is full of shit and sounds like one of those weird ass modern feminists, you know, the feminazis.

@@mysonandme8424 But it's their choices because it's their bodies and their lives, not because someone else is telling them to do so or because someone else thinks its ok to show them off without asking their permission. The song is saying 'don't tell me what to do with my life and don't judge me for how I live my life'. And when people judge women for posting pictures of themselves or not posting pictures of themselves, or for dressing risqué or dressing conservatively because they make the choice to post or not to post or to dress themselves how they like to that's almost on the same level as treating them as objects because instead of taking away their ability to choose they're mocking them for making their choices thereby undermining their ability to make choices.

She (Leslie Gore) is just one of the reasons why I considered the music of the 60's as the greatest decade in rock & roll history. The song was a #1 hit for then 17 year old Leslie Gore back in 1963.
This was the pre-cursor to the women's lib movement of the middle to late 60's. It became sort of a rallying cry for women to take their place alongside men in the corporate field. As bosses and executives. Becoming entrepreneurs and making their mark in the business world. Awesome reaction as always.
Note: Take a look and listen to this 60's teen age girl group known as "The Shangri Las." They were known then as bad girls of rock & roll. Their songs were like mini-operas and novellas.

I remember where I was the first time I heard this song. I was three years old, in the basement playroom, on a Saturday morning, with two of my brothers and all three sisters. The melody scared me, and of course a three I didn’t understand most of the lyrics. I’ll be 63 next year, and it still stirs emotions in me.

Precious. I may have been 10 years old listening to this music. I'm not sure in the 60's when this came out, but just this morning I woke up with this song on my heart. LOL, I've not thought of it for 60 years, hehe.
I guess I was "that" kid, leaving home at 16, in the early 70's, feeling unseen and misunderstood. I may have jumped from the frying pan into the fire, as we didn't start talkin' bout co-dependency till, late 90's? Still, life is a teacher fo sho, and those things that could have destroyed us can magically turn to be good towards us, leaving us with that sweet, Divine fruit of Wisdom.
I wept when I finally found the song and sang with her...Omg-oodness, how surprised I was to feel tears moving through my body! I've come a looooong way, and today, these words brought so close, just how far I've come.
Some of the strongest lessons learned guided me into a greater understanding of my Authentic Self, recognizing what's mine and what's not mine, and the importance of Letting go! What an amaZing song that continues to move us along....Thank you Lesley Gore. Hehehe, what a way to start my day! Thank you beauty-full people, so nice to meet you:) 🌹

In the late 70s I lived in Barberton, OH. The city put on free open air concerts every weekend during the summer. It was always old classic artists. The ones I always remembered the most were Leslie Gore and The Ink Spots. Leslie was most famous for It's My Party and I'll Cry It I Want To. But my favorite was The Ink Spots. My favorite song of theirs was Whispering Grass. I loved loved loved that song. I remember listening to it when I was a kid.

Leslie Gore was way ahead of her time. I remember when this came out since I was a young girl and women’s Lib really hadn’t even come around.. I thought this was really enlightening and a lot of men like my father disliked it. Unless you were young and remember this you can’t really understand what it was all about. She was like 17 when she sang this.

Please react to Linda Ronstadt singing either “Long Long Time” or “Blue Bayou.” She had such an amazing, effortless voice. She recorded “I Will Always Love You” soon after Dolly, and that laid the foundation for Whitney’s bombastic legendary hit with the song.

Oh, I didn't know Linda did Dolly's song "I will always love you" ... Dolly wrote that for her boss. I do know Whitney asked Dolly for permission to sing it. Dolly talked about it in one of her documentaries I saw on RUclips. I never knew Dolly sang it first until then, always thought it was Whitney. They both sang it beautifully!

That little bouffant flip hairdo and sweater makes her look so sweet and then she shows you that sassy side. Boys back then thought they owned a girl if they went on a couple of dates. It probably helped shape my outlook on life as a young teen. Thanks for the reaction ☮️🌻❤️

I worked for Leslie's cousins in New York. The record company was trying to control her life, it wasn't a secret she was a lesbian. It was a rebel song, though subtle. It works for women's empowerment , but it's deeper than that.
